  1. Hello Dolly Sister! You and I have VERY similar tastes in our films noir. I didn't know you liked Kansas City Con, too! We need to get Kansas City Rohanaka to weigh in on this one. I've always loved Kansas City Confidential! Does she like it? We do need her to give us her take on it! I was surprised to see The Big Sleep at number two already, and followed by In A Lonely Place, two big Bogie movies. Add The Maltese Falcon and Key Largo and he's the most popular man on your list. I really love all the Bogir films noir! He's one of my favorites other than Robert Ryan. They both have a different style in noir films and both give excitement for me! 1. Laura 2. On Dangerous Ground 3. The Reckless Moment 4. Clash by Night 5. Cat People 6. Out of the Past 7. His Kind of Woman 8. Ride the Pink Horse 9. The Big Heat 10. Johnny O'Clock 11. Murder, My Sweet 12. The Blue Dahlia 13. Kansas City Confidential 14. Impact 15. This Gun For Hire 16. D.O.A. 17. Leave Her to Heaven 18. The Prowler 19. Don't Bother to Knock 20. Woman on the Beach "at the moment"....Heehee, I know it's impossible to keep the exact same list you first put together when you keep watching more and more. Oh Snap, crackle and pop! I forgot Clash by Night and Cat People on my list! But I love your list! It's so you!! You have a lot of Robert Ryan, just as I suspected! I didn't realize you love, The Prowler so much! Now what's your take on Don't Bother to Knock? Do you think i'll like it? Frankie doesn't seem to think so. You would be so proud of me! I just watched Gentlemen Prefer blondes and Let's Make Love! I hadn't seen Let's Make Love, but MM was really pretty in it! I have always loved Gentlemen Prefer Blondes! I just love the friendship between Jane Russell and MM. The lines in it are so priceless, they always make me giggle so hard!
  2. It's sweet acid! Well that certainly explains a lot.... I was thinking of you. You have to watch your figures! Our figures are beautiful thank you very much! No, I don't think you'll love it. But you'll think it's all right. we'll see about that and when i love the movie and prove you wrong, you must dress as our butler once again at a tea party and relish it! A psycho. naturally, you would love that. norman bates would be so proud of you.
  3. Maybe I'm being unfair to Kate in Dinner , sometimes winning an Oscar can be something of a curse, leading people to tear up an otherwise fine performance (or film) just because it's not "THE BEST" in their eyes. I just find Dinner to be SO LONG (and unnecessarily so, at that), Katharine Houghton is not good (as another poster pointed out); and (maybe most of all) it's Hollywood patting themselves on the back saying, "oh my my, aren't we "hip"? Aren't we "with it"?"...I also think Poitier is hopelessly bland in it, which probably wasn't his fault. I was never such a HUGE Poitier fan, but I think he made some good scenes in Dinner. But you are right in that he wasn't at his best and probably could have swung a little more emotion into the story. I think you are fully right in that it may be a curse when you win an Osar for a movie and people tend to be more critical of that certain performance, but it doesn't necessarily need to be criticized to the max. People just do that on account of, in my opinion. It's like when Grace Kelly won her oscar for The Country Girl. I, personally, think that was the biggest mistake in the history of the Oscars, because Judy really deserved it for A Star is Born that year in 1954, but I don't hate The Country Girl as a movie. It isn't a bad movie in itself ans her performance was really believable as her character with Bing Crosby. I think its a matter of personal preference when it omes to the Oscars and everyone has their favorites and least favorites. I loved reading your opinion on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. At least you weren't afraid to say how you really thought of it. That's what counts!
  4. Of course! OH I see. According to Jane Russell, "you're half sweet, half acid?" Heehee! Gloria wouldn't dare! Such meanness! Yes she would, to Bogie! What do you mean, meanness? I made a strawberry shortcake and youo ate all of it! You didn't leave any for us ladies here. Now that's meanness. The focus of story turns from interesting to dull. It felt forced for a reason. wow. That's interesting, I've never heard you say that about a film noir. I have a feeling I'm going to love it! I think it's a fascinating film. To see Marilyn play such a character is remarkable. What kind of character is she?
  5. I'm thoroughly impressed! And I do believe that you've seen those movies. Well, most of them. There's always a catch with you isn't there? And that's the biggest lie of all! I wonder how long it took for Gloria Grahame to plot a murder with long black gloves. Muwahahahahahahahahha! You may like The Crimson Kimono because it has a love story. I was disappointed in it. Miss G has a starring role at the beginning. Oh, and Don't Bother to Knock is a must "Marilyn" film. It's my favorite performance of hers. I have heard good things about The Crimson Kimono. I'm really excited to see it whenever I find it. Why were you disappointed in it? Was it because there was a SWEET love story involved? :p I have seen a couple minutes of Don't Bother to Knock, and from what I saw it looked really good. I can't wait to see the rest of it!
  6. WHAT A LIST!!! HOLY KAOWABUNGA! 7. Those aren't your favorites! Scarlet Street? I know better! Well now how would you know that? I would like to inform you that I love Scarlet Street! ther performances and gripping and I love the characters!
  8. You're trying to curry favor with your film noir list! Your nose is growing! "curry flavor?" Really?! Frankie, "don't be a traveling wilbury!" Heehee! Now, what's this about my nose growing? Oh yeah?! Well......well....give me a second. You know you like my list! I love your screen caps. Now I remember perfectly!
  9. She's not great in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? a film that, sorry, I just hate every second of (and Lord knows TCM shows it enough that if I was ever gonna ever change my mind, I'd've had ample opportunity by now) I also throw in that I like her a lot in On Golden Pond (which I have not seen a long, long time) - but numerous others have cited that win as nostalgia over substance- although I got no beef with it (at least, not until I sees it again.) Hey jonnygeetar, Why don't you like Kate in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? It's not a bad movie, I dont think. I don't think she necessarily needed the Oscar for it, but I think she did great, nevertheless performance wise.
  10. Oh, Silly Goose. He asks if they know French because he's going to curse them out in French! If they know French, he can't curse them out. Okay now see, I don't remember that at all, but now it makes sense. I can put more pieces together again. Okay I just need to get the DVD out and watch it again. Heehee! Wow, don't let this become a habit where you're always right, frankie!
  11. I just realized I went to 20, not 10. Oopsey! There are just too many that I love!! Wow, i'm posting a lot. Sorry I'm so chatty today guys, I don't mean to, I just missed all of you so much! Edited by: butterscotchgreer on Feb 12, 2011 12:24 AM
  12. I know you have, dahlink! Do you think you could list your ten favorite films noir? you show yours and I'll show mine. OOH OOH! This is so much fun! I would love to see yours, definitely! Okay Okay le'ts get down to it! Here they are in order of lovage: (subject to change any day) 1. The Stranger 2. The Big Sleep 3. In a Lonely Place 4. Shadow of a Doubt 5. Out of the Past 6. On Dangerous Ground 7. The Maltese Falcon 8. The Blue Dahlia 9. Nightmare Alley 10. Niagara 11. The Glass Key 12. Laura 13.Kansas City Confidential 14. Murder, My Sweet 15.Where the Sidewalk Ends 16. Sorry, Wrong Number 17. Scarlet Street 18. The Lady from Shanghai 19. Key Largo 20. The Woman in the Window
  13. Hi, T! Welcome to the T party. Yay! there's always a party somewhere on here! i'm excited! I LOVED those pictures from Man's Castle!!! Just wonderful. And I totally agree about Loretta...she is by far my favorite Julie-type performer. And her and Spence are the only two I really believed being in love. I simply love Loretta at that age in the movie. She was so flawlessly beautiful and her and Spence look so cute together...aside from him and kate, that is. At least you appreciate Loretta as Julie as well. My daddy loooooves Carousel, because of Shirley Jones and he thinks she is just a cutie with an amazing voice, so I made him watch A Man's Castle about a year ago, so compare them and do you know what he said? He completely trashed my Loretta! He said she was ugly and her eyes were too far apart! That made me pout for a long time! Heehee! So now every time I put one of her wonderful movies on, he makes fun of her. Well I think she is beautiful! But then he really doesn't appreciate the story of the movies like that. He just likes Shirely's voice, so I really shouldn't pay too much attention to it, I guess. I know exactly what you are talking about when it comes to believing their love on screen. They look completely compatible and the emotions they portray are so vunerable. I just love it! Do you mean when he was to return to Sylvannia? I'm not sure what scene you're referring to. I don't remember if it was when he returned to Sylvannia, but it was with the ummmm...what's his name, the Prime Minister, I think. Didn't he ask the Prime Minister if he knew how to speak French? And did it with a a sinister half smile, I remember. Oh goodness, maybe I'm hallucinating this memory. Heehee!
  14. He won't believe you've seen more noirs than him! he may not believe it, but i'm gonna believe it! heehee! you know i just say that to bug him. But really, i HAVE seen lots and lots of filma noir! you believe me, don't you, dahlink?
  15. YOu just continue to underrate my liking film noir movies! Don't feel bad, he does that to me daily...
  16. Honestly, I leave to take a couple quizzes and you guys are all over the place. tsk tsk tsk... Dahlink, are we aloud to have a tea party here? I like Gary mean. So do I in certain circumstances. He's so macho and cute when he is in one of those moods. You just wanna go up and kiss him on the cheek to warm up that attitude. heehee! I really liked it! I thought the whole "battle of the sexes" turn of events was quite funny and I really laughed at a couple of moments. There is an energy to Lubitsch's Chevalier comedies that is so infusing, so infectious. I actually found Chevalier much more manly in this one than in the others. He was pretty cute. I liked the butler, too, very funny with the maid. "Let's be common!" ha! Ah! That's awesome! My favorite scenes were with the butler and the maid! I wish I had a good copy of it. My copy is terrible and I can't remember all of it, but I do remember Jeanette MacDonald being so loverly in it and how young she looked! I love any musical with her. Noone can tell on her starring in a movie with someone besides Nelson Eddy. Heehee! But then there was a reason Her and Chevalier didn't do anymore movies together after that. Wasn't it odd to you how Chevalier's character was so attitudy about the whole Understanding French thing? I found that so odd for him for some reason. I seem to have a thing about the whole story line. And I don't really think it's the Liliom character either, it's the girl. She's always so bland to me. If she's slugged him back a time or two I would like all the versions better. Oh I agreee about the girl in the other versions, but I looove Loretta Young as the girl in A Man's Castle. Of course I may be a smidge prejudice, because I love anything she is in, but I honestly think she did a great job that the others really didn't have in the first place. But you raise a good theory. Her character in general should have had a little more spunk for her own self. It might have lifted the story itself to a more believable level. One of my favorite caps! Gettin' a little racy!
  17. 1. The Hanging Tree 2. Kansas City Confidential 3. Rawhide 4. Tall in the Saddle 5. The Best Years of Our Lives 6. The Night Heaven Fell 7. Phantom Lady 8. Indiscreet 9. The Love Parade 10. The Bad and the Beautiful 11. Flight of the Phoenix 12. Moonrise 13. Liliom My grandmama just watched The Hanging Tree for the first time when it came on. I was flabberghasted when she said that. She doesn't like it as much as I thought she would. I loooove The Hanging Tree, but she said Gary was really mean in it and she didn't like that about his character. I told her he gets better at the end. Kansas City Confidential is where I expected it to fall on your list. What did you think of The Love Parade? Well, he liked the rest of it better than I did I'm afraid. I did admire Boyer's performance and I much prefer this version to Carousel. If you include the Spencer Tracy/Loretta Young Man's Castle, then that would be my favorite of all versions of this story. Why didn't you like the rest of Liliom as much. I thought it was pretty good! There were a couple things I didn't like, but it was a good Lang film for me. I don't really like Carousel at all either, but I also have to agree on that A Man's Castle is definitely the best. Why do you like A Man's Castle as the best version?
  18. Uh oh. Don't worry I only said nice things about everyone...except for frankie...what are the odds?
  19. Hi Baby T. I thought of you seriously while watching some of "RANDOM HARVEST" earlier. AAWWW! I always think of you when I see Out of the Past. I watched it the other day. OH my Greer! Did you see all of Random Harvest? "THE TEN COMMANDMENTS" strike me that way now too. I see the soap opera-ish-ness of it all. Yeah, I'm making up words now. Making up words should be pretty common around here now. Heehee! I can really see that, though, in The Ten Commandments. I never thought of it that way, though. I was never aloud to watch any Soap Operas growing up.
  20. You have a sweetie? I should have known....was it that cutie pie you were teaching about film? No, Yep, I have a sweetie! Heehee! He's my prince charming alright and his name is Joe! Nope, it isn't that guy I was talking to about film at school. Joe knows all about all of you on here.
  21. Hello Thundarr the Barbarian! The comedy in the film is pretty good. I didn't like the dramatic events. And I can't say that I liked any of the characters. Maybe that's the point. You know it's getting really weird, when I actually agree artly with what you just said! I can't stand most of the characters in the Bad and Beautiful. I am a big fan of Dick Powell and I didn't appreciate his character as much as I wanted to; however I loved the dramatic events. I thought they added greatly to the story. I mean Vincente Minnelli really did an outstanding job with this movie and part of the reason I say that, is because it gave him a sense of versatility. This film reallly showed people that he could not only direct musicals FANTASTICALLY and light-hearted romances, but dramas as well.
  22. Hey Wendy Darling! Loverly to see you too! I did go swing dancing this week and cooked with my sweetie. Other than that, lots of going to class! What's new with you and what new classic movies have you seen lately? did you already make a list for that? I'll have to go check.
  23. oh wait...now that i think about it, Angie gave me the silent copy of Liliom, but I have seen the Lang version too. I must say that I enjoyed the Lang version a smidge better, though. I loooooooved Charles Boyer, but he had such an attitude with his character. But what kept me on the edge of my seat was whether Julie and Liliom would actually stay together or not. Golly, what a girl goes through while watching these movies. Heehee!
  24. HEY DAHLINK!! *15. The Bad and the Beautiful* *9. The Best Years of Our Lives* *7. The Flight of the Phoenix* *11. The Hanging Tree* *5. Indiscreet* *1. Kansas City Confidential* *2. Liliom* *14. The Love Parade* *6. Moonrise* *12. The Night Heaven Fell* *10. Phantom Lady* *13. Rawhide* *3. Shockproof* *4. Tall in the Saddle* *8. The Texans* I love this list thread! i must visit more often, i can't believe i haven't gone in the Favorites threads more often. sheesh! Heehee! You j ust saw Liliom for the first time?! Or did you just see it recently but had seen it before? What did you think of it?! Angie made me a copy of it a long time ago and I hadn't seen anyone else talking about it. This is SUPER EXCITING! It seems to be high on your list, yay! Mine too! We'll have to ignore frankie for having it so low on his list...silly him worrying about the ending...Shame on him!
  25. *Yes, Mame was an awful film for many reasons. Maybe it would have been better if Angela Lansbury, who starred in the musical on Broadway, was in the film. Btw, I saw Angela play Mama Rose on stage, she was great!* I thought the filmn, Mame was rather cute, but I thought that Angela Lansbury really should have played her instead of Lucille Ball. I mean I love Lucy, honestly, but Angela did so incredibly in the original broadway musical and Lucy kinda brought the energy down a bit from Angela's performance and singing. I have also heard Angela's soundtrack from being Mama Rose and thought she pulled it off with amazing talent and vigor. Having said that, while Angela is the Queen of Broadway, I think it will be very intriguing to see Barbra recreate the role. So I'm excited about it! Answering the original question of who is better: Streisand or Hepburn....Who would ask such a question? Honestly! Heehee! This has to be a trick question. It's comparing musical genius to an acting genius and they are from two different eras. They are both wonderful actresses with such a different style of carrying emotion. Now I, personally love any Kate Hepburn movie anyone will throw my way and am trying to collect every one of her films to appreciate her unique beauty, but I come from a musical background and fall in dreamland when Barbra sings and it makes me wanna spread my arms out and sing at the top of my lungs. There is a place in my heart for both!
