oh yes, i think when jane was writing P & P, she didnt want it to have such a serious tone to it like the newest version made sure to place into the beloved story itself. i think, this story was meant to have a little comic standing to it and thats part of the reason people love it so much. i know some people pick apart the costumes, b/c they are from the wrong period, but to be honest, i couldnt see it any other way. i mean, could you see all five of the sisters floating down the street in the middle of the ton with their mother dressed in the proper gowns? heehee! okay that sounds rediculous, but i love the gowns in the original even though they were left over patterns from GWTW....so whats wrong with saving a little money? heehee!

ugh! i just forget the keep adding names left and right, i was really out of it last night i guess.
i also forgot theodora Goes Wild for my list. its my favorite irene dunne movie and theodora really captured the screwball ability irene could aply to, especially with a leading man like melvyn douglas.....and then Good News with junie and pete too! oohthats one of my favorites ive seen about 40 or 50 times.
*I bet I've seen The African Queen at least a dozen times and Charlie Alnutt is the reason why. He definitely deserved all the acclaim he got for that turn*

*The Bogie movie I can't BELIEVE I left off my list is To Have and Have Not. There was a time when I watched it almost daily. I have seen it at least 50 or 60 times, maybe more, and used to know all the dialogue by heart. I even got a Hoagy Carmichael album that had the songs on it, including the uncensored version of the "Hong Kong" song.*
ah! yes! To Have and Have Not is definitely a bogie favorite in my household too. when i first saw that, i was so fascinated with him and betty, that i watched it every day that week, and oddly enough momma and daddy didnt care if i did. they actually liked the movie, and momma thinks bogie has a weird body, so thats a plus for To Have and Have Not. heehee!

he did..i have noticed that whenever he directed jimmy. jimmy had a certain quality in his acting style and anthony mann certainly took advantage of it, which i actually liked about the movies they did together. he made jimmy different in every single one. i mean literally, jimmy had a completely different personality in each one, but always somehow managed to stay on the good side. it intrigues me to see so many different sides to being a good guy, especially with people like gary, the duke, and jimmy.
as for abie, well thats oneof the many reasons i actually watched it. heehee! abie baby is certainly a good reason. heehee!

heehee! i was just trying to remember if it was in the book too. i thought it was, but i wasnt going to say anything until i was absolutely sure. if you remember, than we are both right! woohoo! thats one of the reasons i love jane austren so much in all of her literary works, not only in Pride and Prejudice, but she points the same way in Emma, and Mansfield Park and in the rest of her books too.

i forgot to add my African Queen to the list!! of course i love kate hepburn in all of her movies, but i just love watching that one over and over, and bogie is brilliant in it too. i just love him in that role! it gives him sort of a carefree taste and in most of his roles, he is more serious. i guess thats why i always moved toward that one more.

well you cant go wrong with that trio. i always love watching them over and over again myself, especially kate and audrey. i watch marylin a lot, but not as much as the other two. maybe im your minnie me. heehee!

*There are many things in the film that I do enjoy. I definitely like the battle between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, as I'm always up for a tug-of-love. My favorite scene in the film is when she denies him. I thought that was strong.*
the diversity of thoughts going on in the middle of that argument, is sort of mind boggling when you think about it. when darcy proposes, he makes the mistake of saying that he liked her against his will, against his proper judgment, againt the obstacles that lay between them. if he hadnt said that to her, i do think she would have denied him, although there was the jane and bingley issue. lizzy thought it was darcy's fault for separating them, and dacry hadnt even realized jane and bingley were in love. for such an intelligent and perspective man, he sure let love get in the way of the gift of observance. i really couldnt see any other man beseide larry olivier to play darcy. i just thik he was beyond perfection for this role. i think the entire cast was picked with perfection, so thanks to the casting director from marsha hunt, and heather angel, to edmund gwynn and greer garson.
a friend of mine watched this with me one time and he said that mr. bennett was the best character and had the best lines in the whole movie. he was constatly cracking up to his lines...and he doesnt even like old movies. i mean every word of the script was carefully written based upong jane austen's brilliant novel and the added conversation is just as refreshing and sophisticated.

see, a lot of people dont see that in why greer got the part and viv didnt. it isnt because it was a beauty contest, but it was the air in theri personality. the way the carried off certain things. goodness, some parts of the movie, i could never see viv playing, personally. it is so different than Scarlett. now i know that would be typecasting, but it makes sense, just as you said. gone with the wind was made a mere year before pride and prejudice was filmed. that is pretty close to one another and it wouldnt have been smart for viv to do that. but despote larry wanting viv to play elizabeth, when greer came on the scene, he was pleased nevertheless, b/c they knew each other long before shecame to America. they worked with each other in England when doing stagework and even dated. so he knew her personality as well as her abilities to do what.
but i really dont wish to put viv down any, b/c i thought her work in gone with the wind was brilliant, but i also think that greer's work in pride and prejudice was brilliant if not more so. even if viv hadnt taken the role as scarlett, i still couldnt see her playing elizabeth. it would be so weird! heehee!

thank you for that post, i rather enjoyed reading your your take on one of my all time favorites. i must say that i quite agree with you on most issues you wrote about. one big issue that caught my eye was your take on edna may over judi dench. i completly 100% agree with all of that. i was so overtaken with the fact that they remade this classic....again when its original with the humble exception of colin firth's verion...needed no change whatsoever and was quite priceless. but i watched it regardless, just to compare the two and if kiera knightly didnt already do the trick, then it had to be judi dench putting too much emphasize on the fact that lady catherine was a stuck up snob who hated change.
now i have read the book many times, and yes, judi dench's verion comes closER to how jane austen wrote it, but back then, louis b mayer wanted their movies to turn out with a happier ending and thats why i think they cast edna may oliver as lady catherine. i think they did a bang up job with doing that and i couldnt picture a more perfect person to play that part.
i also thought greer was and always will be the most suitable person for the role...yet i know the first choice was vivien leigh, and i do like her, but i dont think she would have made elizabeth as believable as greer did. i was so excited when carrie fisher and robert osborne made this one of the essentials, but when they started to talk about it, carrie had the nerve to say how, "the role of elizabeth was made for a pretyy girl, not an exquisitely beautiful girl to play." she was referring to greer garson as being just pretty and viv being absolutely "drop dead gorgeous" was,i believe the actual phrase she used. thats completely dropped any like i had for carrie fisher. at least she could have said something nice about greer. goodness me. i thought it was rather mean of her. i may be a naive teenager in a lot of ways, but if im wrong, someone please tell me.
