Does anyone know what the hold up is for this great film on DVD? It has been announced a few titles and then pulled. what are they waiting for? Hopefully, a restored TECHNICOLOR Print????? And is the 1929 THE LETTER really coming, also STORM WARNING. THANKS.

THE STORY OF RUTH is a wonderful film with a brilliant Franz Waxman score and Peggy Wood (SOUND OF MUSIC) giving her best performance of many IMO. glad this is coming to replace the pan and scan VHS.

Seven features. In 'Sullivan's Travels' a director of escapist films is forced to reassess reality when he researches his next film by taking to the road as a hobo. Also features: 'The Lady Eve', 'Hail The Conquering Hero', 'The Great Moment', 'The Great McGinty', 'Christmas In July' and 'The Palm Beach Story'.
from amazon in England
also in England: STANWYCK set that includes MIRACLE WOMAN, BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YE, GOLDEN BOY, ALL I DESIRE and a gorgeous redo of DOUBLE INDEMNITY (OOP HERE). go figure.

many Preston Sturges films are available on DVD in Mother England that are not here. So is HOLIDAY 38. ANGEL FACE is in France. As is CLUNY BROWN if still available. I think MACAO is also. All Region DVD players are great. THEY WERE EXPENDABLE, by the way, for the Robert Montgomery fan is on DVD here. as is one other on that list. there is also a fantastic ROBERT MONTGOMERY website but seems like the owner has vanished for he did not answer my emails. goole and you should find it. THE EARL OF HOLLYWOOD I believe it is called. oh yes MR AND MRS SMITH is out on DVD here.

too bad TCM did not get a print of Fontaine in SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR in which she plays an alcoholic actress. directed by George Stevens. a fine film.
-
STATE FAIR with Janet Gaynor and Will Rogers has been on FMC recently. The print is not that great but still good. FOX is including the 1962 version in the forthcoming STATE FAIR 1945 DVD!!!!! not the 1933 apparently. oh well.
-
I think it would be interesting to include the Janet Gaynor DADDY LONG LEGS witht the Astaire version if FOX has a good print.

Buying rare movies
Anyone know of any good sites for the really rare ones?
I'm currently seeking Ladybug Ladybug (1963)
>>>>
as of this moment, there is one LADYBUG LADYBUG with William Daniels on ebay for sale. I do not like to promote that site for there are many bad prints and illegal copies so take your chance. good luck.
-
thanks for the info. great news. but at this rate, there will be nothing on FMC that is not on DVD!!!! good for their logo is one of the most obtrusive.
-
I worry about Joan Collins/Alexis' response to THE WAYWARD BUS being included in a Jayne Mansfield set since Joan Collins had top billing over Jayne!!! To be fair there should be a FOX box set for Joan also including THE WAYWARD BUS and perhaps GIRL IN THE RED VELVET SWING, SEVEN THIEVES and/or RALLY ROUND THE FLAG BOYS! Does Gogi Grant sing THE WAYWARD BUS or did she just do The Wayward Wind?

Yes. FMC is not much of a threat. Though I want a peek at ISLAND IN THE SUN tomorrow before the LBX DVD. a gorgeous looking film with a great opening. I think it is to be LBX tomorrow. I subscribed a few years ago right after the showing of Lee Remick in the awful but interesting for her SANCTUARY. It never came back? Sure people are becoming adults everyday and need to see the ALL ABOUT EVES of FOX but come on ebay dupers sell old FOX films FOX should be showing: GOLDIE with Harlow, numerous rare Spencer Tracy films. EAST LYNNE with Ann Harding. BERKELEY SQUARE. DADDY LONG LEGS, the original sound one with Gaynor (should be in the forthcoming Astaire release but I doubt it). The AFI catalogs always indicate whether they viewed a film or not to give their story line and notes. All of these and more show viewed. When COLUMBIA released BONJOUR TRISTESSE based on the Sagan novel FOX should have responded with their A CERTAIN SMILE, her second novel. A real period piece of the 1950s. FMC wasted the chance with the Chan films--hope they are looking for the four lost FOX Chan films--for idiotic reasons but woulld rather have them on DVD anyhow.

ISLAND IN THE SUN you mean. ISLAND IN THE SKY is the Wayne one. then, of course, we are awaiting ISLAND OF LOST SOULS.
-
thanks. great news though that they are doing SOMETHING with their library. perhaps all the song rights in the FOX musicals are an issue. I wish they would stop this COLLECTION thing, though, and go title by title (film noir to one side). Jayne Mansfied? What about JOAN COLLINS who was also in WAYWARD BUS? That set could include GIRL IN THE RED VELVET SWING!!! and ISLAND IN THE SUN but SUN is in another collection. too many collections IMO. Overall, FOX does a great job with their presentations except for the postage stamp stills and that sepia faded look they use for key photos in the studio classic series that extends to the spine of each DVD case. I would rather one or two well chosen photos than those small little things. Those who recall lasers know what I mean perhaps. again, thanks for the news. I will still cling to my ebay found THE WAYWARD BUS pan and scan with the FOX logo and end title slashed off.

Got my TWO FOR THE ROAD DVD today. 1967. Audrey Hepburn. what a great restoration. looks great. brilliant colors, sharp images. the DVD box should have had more Audrey pictures!!!! and an extra about the restoration comparing an older print to the new one. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. FOX does a fine job with most of their releases. I do not like those faded images instead of nice bright stills, those, that they use for the DVD packaging. oh well, always something to complain about!

we love Norma but apparently DVD does not. Any idea why her films are not on DVD? The VHS tapes are all OOP (except I think THE WOMEN). I hoped 2006 Oscar releases would include at least THE DIVORCEE and A FREE SOUL. Does anyone think a TCM ARCHIVES release could come as was done for Keaton and Chaney. So many only know her as the lady in THE WOMEN.
NORMA ON DVD NOW.
-
I think a good series of films would be EDITH HEAD AT PARAMOUNT.
Some great costumes by this gifted lady enlivened some otherwise rather uninteresting films...and performers.
-
Bardot directed by Clouzot (DIABOLIQUE, WAGES OF FEAR) in THE TRUTH 1960. Where is this movie?
-
I would like to see the REALLY rare films, some that have seemingly vanished and they are not all that old.
A FEVER IN THE BLOOD ANGIE DICKINSON 1962
FOR LOVE OR MONEY MITZI GAYNOR, KIRK DOUGLAS, THELMA RITTER '63
THE CONDEMNED OF ALTONA SOPHIA LOREN, FREDRIC MARCH '63
FOOTSTEPS IN THE FOG JEAN SIMMONS 1955
among others.
Why do some movies never show anywhere like the above list.
-
why is Joan Fontaine listed in the credits for SOUTH PACIFIC? the roll up cast. must be someone using the same name?
-
better post while I can. I would like to see a series of COLUMBIA programmers (AKA to some as film noir) from the 1950s such as THE LONG HAUL, WICKED AS THEY COME, PORT AFRIQUE, MIAMI EXPOSE, FIVE AGAINST THE HOUSE and the rarely seen JOE MACBETH with Paul Douglas and Ruth Roman.
That month of films never on video someone suggested would be fun, too. could be dedicated to ebay dupers and called RARE RARE RARE. VERY RARE. Shrink wrapped. 8 out of 10. do not expect DVD quality and you will be pleased. looks good for an old movie. comes in a plain black case. no artwork. if you want artwork bid elsewhere (that is my all time favorite ebay put down). LOL

does anyone have a problem logging in? I keep getting thrown back to sign in when I post. this is a test from another computer. thanks

re: idea of remakes being shown back to back with original. most remakes are not up to the originals but still fun to see. Had a chance to see THE BIRDS AND THE BEES. Certainly no THE LADY EVE, but not as bad as its reputation. I was told Sturges was in on the remake script. Wonder why the great line cracked by Coburn: "that's the problem with young people today. They don't respect their elders" was not in this version. Needs a true tech print though to be tolerable.

nice ideas, Yancey. I had lunch with Sabra the other day and she hopes you are not out wandering again. don't forget to tend to the newspaper. perhaps you can suggest TCM show the 1929 THE LETTER. and premiere a pristine print of PORGY AND BESS '59 to put an end to the absurd ebayers playing around with that movie. I am certain the people at TCM could convince the Gershwin estate that it is better to let the film be seen as it should be rather than in absurd dupes with horrible color and worse sound. It won an Oscar for sound recording.
Also:
TCM logo is not too bad, but once at the beginning and the middle would be enough. it is distracting to me.
-
why do they continue to neglect NORMA SHEARER on DVD? Oscar time would be ideal for THE DIVORCEE (AA best actress) and A FREE SOUL (AA for Barrymore). that is a start. So many people only know her through THE WOMEN. At least those with DVD players. The new set for Oscar time CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS through LUST FOR LIFE are all interesting but obvious choices. I can read it now, what the modern critics will say about 1931's CIMARRON, in my opinion the worst Best Picture winner of all time. MOROCCO, PUBLIC ENEMY, CITY LIGHTS were eligible but neither niminated for best picture.
BRING ON NORMA SHEARER. TCM ARCHIVE RELEASE if nothing else. thanks

does Mr. Feltenstein work for TCM or for WARNER BROS HOME VIDEO or both. I am confused but know he does a lot for old films...and has done a lot. wish he would make the DAWN OF SOUND laser set available for DVD with some added titles. thanks.
