I believe a computer only allows you so many times to set the regions then allows you to make a final choice. there is a software you can download and purchase that reads all regions.

keeps sending me back to enter a password over and over again. what gives

THE CONGRESS DANCES with Lilian Harvey 1931. in German. do not know exactly what they are saying but it all looks and sounds great. wish TCM would show it with English subtitles. a stunner. opening remarks on the film would be interesting for it looks like it certainly influenced Hollywood.
available region 2 amazon Germany if anyone interested. no subtitles. but the plot line should be available in many sources such as the book THE GREAT GERMAN FILMS.

Does anyone know why some fine films are released in Mother England--and Germany and France--but not here. I am told the WILD RIVER release is finally coming here (beautiful print). But FIVE FINGERS, MAN OF THE WEST, TWO FOR THE SEESAW, BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN, ALL I DESIRE, DOUBLE INDEMNITY (!!!!!!!), EL CID, THE KEY (carol reed), OUR MAN IN HAVANA, THE HEAT'S ON (MAE WEST), SOLOMON AND SHEBA, TRAPEZE and others too many to list all available in REGION 2 European releases. Does a company buy rights to these in certain areas for a certain time period?? also, GARDEN OF EVIL with a great Herrmann score. and ALL the Hal Roach LAUREL AND HARDYS in a gorgeous box set.

DEBORAH KERR.
Would like to see THE JOURNEY 1959 AND COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS ditto again. BLESSINGS is not too good a movie but she is incredibly beautiful in that one.
wonder how her health is? assume she is still with us.

one good and rather rare title is THE JOKER IS WILD. Best song winner. eat your heart out ebay dupers. almost broke down and bought this from ebay which no doubt would mean a fuzzy home made dupe. oddly this never had a home video release. don't get me wrong, some ebayers have good prints of some rare titles, but some......come on. rare rare rare. 8 out of 10. good for an old movie. who are they kidding.

February, like March used to be, is I assume their OSCAR nominated/winners month. This would have been a perfect time to show JEANNE EAGELS in THE LETTER 1929 for which she was nominated (and no doubt should have won).

yes, The Chaney and Keaton sets are great from TCM archives. I think the DAWN OF SOUND series should be revived. there were 3 or 4 laser sets that are collector's items. In the meantime, a TCM ARCHIVE SET FOR NORMA SHEARER. AT LEAST 4 SETS if you limit each to 3. and the Marie Dressler-Polly Moran set for their comedies. But SHEARER is a must IMO. thanks!
-
p.s. if you go to the description it mentions Oscar nominations for the film cinematography and music...but not the acting nominees!!!! what else would I expect from a catalog that promised me the 1929 THE LETTER and then changed its description January 11!!! he he ha ha. if you take the plunge and order DEATH 51, let me know. I will, too. have a feeling two copies will then get returned. B.

I asked about this on hot topics last week or so. Very very odd if you go above to shopping and look for DEATH OF A SALESMAN..........up comes three versions including the 1951 version! something is strange about that. I have written to Movies Unlimited with no reply. how can they have it and no else? check quickly before they read this message! I bought a lousy dupe on VHS over at you know where.

I found the musical film had some real suspense. I was not expecting horror in a musical, but the chandelier at the end was nicely done IMO. The Rains version is very mild for me, and has a lot of singing in it, from the stage. does anyone who saw the stage version, recall if the end implied the phantom lived as does this wonderful movie through the framing device. can't recall from 1987. thanks

I like musicals on the screen but admit the talent is not like it was with a Vincente Minnelli, for example, directing. and he loved to include "bizarre" sequences in his films. As I watched PHANTOM OF THE OPERA again, I thought I wonder if Minnelli would have liked this. I think so. Some of the music just gives me goosebumps it is so gorgeous. Frankly, though, while I liked it a lot, I do wonder what audience Andrew Lloyd Weber thought would attend it.he certainly does not need the money from the film. I wish he would film his SUNSET BLVD the musical with Streisand before it is too late and it probably is too late as she is nearly 60 though looks great.

Kim Novak. VERTIGO, KISS ME STUPID, LEGEND OF LYLAH CLARE, BOYS NIGHT OUT. I am in a minority perhaps of one, but still think her OF HUMAN BONDAGE is pretty good.
SOPHIA LOREN. Wish TCM would show FIVE MILES TO MIDNIGHT. Have a VHS but would love to put that on DVD.

has DEBORAH KERR even given a TCM interview? I think she lives abroad. but what a career.
-
glad someone mentioned Maureen O'Hara. I see bits and pieces of her making comments sometimes but never a full interview. I think she has enough credits for a SPECIAL OSCAR. Or no? QUIET MAN, the performance of a lifetime, HOW GREEN WAS MY VALEY, LONG GRAY LINE AND ALL THE FORD films. she is even strong in those Universal programmers. even with less than thrilling material, she was always excellent.
-
I think PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is the boldest film of the year for people sing to each other. no excuses for a song like in the wildly overrated CHICAGO IMO. I note the soundtrack was in the top 20 here in a SF paper yesterday so someone is going and enjoying it. I think it a wonderful gothic fairytale with great music except some of the Gilbert and Sullivan type patter with Carlotta goes on too long. Butler is fine in a difficult part. The lead soprano is perfect. WISHING YOU WERE SOME HOW HERE AGAIN lingers strongly in my memory. But I would have cut the swordfight that follows. still an excellent movie musical.can't wait for the DVD.

re MITZI GAYNOR. TCM always shows SOUTH PACIFIC with her wildly underrated performance. TCM should have UA'S 1959 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY with her and David Niven. but never see that. perhaps rights problems. I think Mitzi Gaynor had a wonderful personality but a lack of good roles available to her. she is very good in the otherwise not too good ANYTHING GOES 56. never forget when she almost brought the Oscar house down doing GEORGY GIRL when it was nominated for best song in the mid 1960s. wonder who owns the rights to her old musical TV shows?
-
Olivia deHavilland looked and sounded great on the recent GWTW DVD. It would be worth going to Paris to film an interview. on the way or way back they could stop at Joan Fontaine's, too.
where is Eleanor Parker, WOMAN IN WHITE, BETWEEN TWO WORLDS? perhaps they interviewed her.
one I would like to see is LIZABETH SCOTT. TCM has shown DEAD RECKONING, TOO LATE FOR TEARS and I think STRANGE LOVE OF MARTHA IVERS and, of course, THE RACKET produced by HOWARD HUGHES!!! she made PULP in 72 than vanished.
-
JENNIFER JONES. is she a recluse now??? try and get her for an interview.
Duel in the Sun
Song of Bernadette
Since you went away
Love Letters
Beat the Devil
Portrait of Jennie
Madame Bovary
We Were Strangers (coming to DVD)
and where is Doris Day?
-
where is Jennifer Jones? no audio commentaries on DVDs. I would like to see her introduce LOVE LETTERS, a real sleeper and worthy of more than two stars in Maltin, BEAT THE DEVIL, CLUNY BROWN and PORTRAIT OF JENNIE. or even MADAME BOVARY 49 for which she should do an audio commentary. Her CARRIE just released and it holds up very well on DVD.

DAY OF WRATH is available on DVD from CRITERION in a great Dreyer set of films.
WAGES OF FEAR DITTO.
DARK CORNER might still be around on VHS.
STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN DITTO though I am told a DVD is in the works.
Cinemax once had a selection of films not available on home video. wish TCM would do the same. especially some of the ones ebayers offer at stupid prices and awful prints such as
FOOTSTEPS IN THE FOG
MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT
Thanks

I do not believe JEALOUSY belongs to Warners. does not THE LETTER beong to them? I would love to see a continuation of THE DAWN OF SOUND series, and THE LETTER would be a perfect one to include. remember those great DAWN OF S lasers. wish they would give them a DVD release and come up with more and more.thanks
-
I finally listened past DeMille. But I cannot fast forward through the radio broadcasts. they should have made them alternate audio tracks over the film. oh well.
-
does anyone have this DVD. have you managed to play any of the radio broadcasts. I cannot get past the introductions with DeMille. could be my player.

Wish they would include the 1960 CIMARRON with Glenn Ford. not all that good but an interesting cast and a fine Franz Waxman score. LBX of course. and the Schell smile. !!!
