hello bart...believe it or not we were neigbors...except for a vast age difference(?) i had the same experiences......i was born in 1928 in ridgewood putnam avenue..stayed till 1959 after a move
to fresh pond road.. remember gottliebs delicatessen on myrtle across from the rko madison?
yes i sat in the 45degree balconyin the bushwick saw many good films there ,,,but my favorite as a kid was the monroe and the eagle on central avenue. ....are you old enough to remeber the eagle(central and palmetto)???three features, cartoons ,, serials newsreels, a 2reeler and a free comic book...for TEN CENTS..how on earthdid that theatre make a profit. ?we lived in cold water flats and then heated apartments (35 dollars a month 1939) it was a different world then.
I graduated st matthias 1942...brooklyn tech 42 to 46..reached from fresh pond rd via the old wooden trains on the el with folding gates operated by the conductors......
i remember all the old movie houses ,the ones you mentioned.,plus the rivoli on myrtle,, the glenwood, belvedere, acme in glendale andthe willoughby and star in bushwick...
happy memories.....how do i send a personal posting to trivia members??
ps ..i guess your age at aabout 50..am i right?

Holy Cow metz!............I always went to the RKO Bushwick as a kid! ( Did you ever sit up in the Third Balcony that had a 45 Degree Angle? )........Across the street was "The Monroe" a cheaper movie that showed three movies........but a tough crowd attended. Up the block on Broadway was the Loews Gates.......with the great marble staircase......where I saw many a movie including "Psycho"!
Another movie was "The Empire" but that closed and is now a church! (So is the Loews Gates & The RKO Bushwick is now a High School.
In Ridgewood Queens, a neighborhood nearby, there was the RKO Madison on Myrtle Avenue..."The Parthenon"...now a Bingo Hall..and the "Ridgewood Theater" which is still open and will soon celebrate the 100th anniversary of its existence. Small World...Isn't It?
I lived on Linden Street between Bushwick Avenue & Evergreen Avenue and attended St.Barbara's Catholic school on Central Avenue & Bleecker Street....Then Bushwick High School on Irving Place!
