  1. Hi Mary,

Glad you decided to stop in like this. You must be a night owl too! :) It is nice to hear from the moderators (in plain clothes) publicly in this way. I think many members will appreciate this.

  2. I am so far behind on my silent film watching. I love the Lon Chaney films. I remember that TCM showed a number of Mary Pickford films for a time and I really became a fan of her work by watching all of them that aired.

*The Crowd* still remains my favorite though. I saw it on the big screen many years ago and it had so many wonderful shots and a story that really struck a note with me. Of all the scenes in all the films I've seen there is a sequence in *The Crowd* that has haunted me, living in my memory for years. Few scenes touch me as personally as this one.

I have a number of Silent films in my collection that I haven't seen yet.

It's this chain. Here is the link to their new Richmond theater:

TimeWarner are you listening? Charles Tabesh??? :D

  4. Hi April, :)

Well that sounds lovely. The whole experience just sounds like another dream come true actually.

    Chris,

After reading what you wrote about "The Senator" I had to google it. I always get distressed when I hear things like that. I found this article on it and it has such a great story.

In Richmond we still have several surviving grand theaters, most are downtown. All but one, are mostly only for live shows now. The one exception is almost exclusively a second run movie house now. Classic films are rarely screened here anymore. We just had our first new theater in decades open inside the city limits. It's in a converted wharehouse and they do serve wine and beer in the concession. Something new to me. It's a multiplex but they have started screening classic films on Sunday afternoons. We will see if it lasts.

Every few months I drive my mom to one of the city cemeteries where a lot of our family rests. As we drive through the old city neighborhoods, she will point out an old neighborhood theater here and there. All of them are either abandoned or converted to other uses, but occasionally I spot a sign of their former glory hidden somewhere. These were probably never grand palaces but they do have their charm. A few even have their marquee advertising whatever they have become. One is now a laundromat.

  5. Hi MissG,

Thanks for sharing your visit to Atlanta with us. What a wonderful experience that must have been.

I can't wait to see the pictures. Now did you and Robert Osborne go out for drinks? You can tell us. We won't blab. :)

  6. I see your point, and I know you were not asking me but if a member is suspended for two weeks then that would be a "suspension" not a ban. The word ban should mean "permanently prohibited". This is an extreme action I know, but some members have been banned in the past and simply come back quickly under new posting names.

I thought you posted some good ideas about setting up guidelines for members that could be enacted.

  7. *Should banned members of this board remained banned from this board, thus not*

*allowing them to return under a "new" name(s)?*

This delegate from the great Commonwealth of Virginia votes an emphatic yes!

  8. When I was a kid, I used to love to read all those "strange and amazing stories" collections. The tale of the mother and daughter checking in to the Paris hotel during the Exhibition was included in one of these. That's where I first heard the story.

*So Long at the Fair* changes it to a sister and brother, not sure why, nonetheless it's a great premise for a film. I have heard of the Hitchcock episode but have never seen it. Robert Osborne mentioned the Jeanne Crain film in his discussion with fan programmer Philip Himberg. I've never seen that one either.

There are similarities as well with the Hitchcock film *The Lady Vanishes*. I love these type of stories. I would also be interested in seeing *Home Before Dark*. It sounds good.

Message was edited by: molo14 because the guest programmer was named Philip Himberg not Mark.

  9. Hey there Frank,

Things will be heating up for you around July 23rd if you haven't answered the call by then. :)

*Roadblock, The Undercover Man, and The Unknown Man are three films*

    *noir on my hit list.*

Hey I haven't seen any of those either.

*Now how about a Gloria Grahame "Summer Under the Stars" day for my favorite month*

    *of the year?*

    *Naked Alibi*

    *The Good Die Young*

    *Roughshod*

    *The Glass Wall*

    *Blonde Fever*

    *Prisoner of the Casbah*

    *Ride Out for Revenge*

    *Yes, I'm greedy.*

So am I! That's a great suggestion there! Outstanding idea! So tcmprogrammr , are you listening?

*I'm actually very interested in two Greer Garson films that are airing: Desire Me and Remember?.*

Okay who are you and what have you done with Frank???

    Oh Butterscotch!! :D

This is a very good schedule! I may have to take a couple of days off that month. :)

  10. The Private Screenings with Mickey Rooney really flew by. The incident that got him so worked up in the interview occurred on the set of *Killer McCoy.* The target of his wrath was director Roy Rowland. If it happened as Mickey said it did, I could understand his anger.

Rooney was fascinating to listen to. He remembered working with the likes of Will Rogers, Marie Dressler and Jean Harlow. He liked Louis B. Mayer and thought he wasn't nearly as bad as so many have said. He didn't seem to care much for Dore Schary though.

Robert Osborne was really only able to touch on a few things in Rooney's long career. I wonder if he would be up for another interview, and if Mr. Osborne would be willing to do it. :)

  11. Johnm,

I think at least one active member was alluded to in the old thread. I never saw the last few posts.

I know that accusing an active member of misconduct, no matter how justified you (or I) may feel the accusation is warranted, is considered to be a personal attack or harassment and it is cause for the mods to take action they deem appropriate.

  12. Cinemafan,

I would say that is pretty much their standard answer. I just checked my replies from them. If you provide links they will thank you for that too, and and then say they will review them.

The last sentence is the same exactly, with the emphasis on the word all put in my response as well. The other thing you get over and over is whether or not what you are complaining about is a violation of the TCM code of conduct. The code of conduct does not cover the "sockpuppetry" or some of the other things we have complained about such as stalking.

I think most importantly, when someone is banned they should not be allowed to simply sign up under new and multiple identities. I don't think the Mods want this but I think that is what they are having a hard time proving. While it may be obvious to us, they want concrete proof that really only they can provide.

*Fixes would be wonderful - but first, the problem has to be admitted as existing.*

That is a very good point.

  13. *He/she is everywhere in every thread. I can't post something to someone else without immediately having a post from the troll immediately after mine. Someone I know on the board calls it "smothering," which is very apt.*

    Filmlover,

This happens to me and many others all the time. I consider it stalking but since the "they" don't usually "say" anything abusive (it's their very actions which are abusive), I have been told that they are not breaking any of the rules of conduct. That has been the response I get from the mods, since someone asked. (but they were banned and now they are back in droves? I can't track ip addresses but I can believe my own eyes, they even have their own trademark, see this and beware: B-) That's to let *us* know, well we can't prove it. Well why not? At least tell us that much)

To you, Rohanaka, CineMaven, and the others, most of all MissGoddess, who has dealt with this longer than any of us, I want to thank you for laying it on the line here. This problem needs to be addressed.

  14. Coming up tonight, Friday April 17th, 7:00pm Pacific - 10:00pm Eastern:

*So Long at the Fair - 1950* Fan Programmer Philip Himberg actually picked this film and it's one of the lesser known choices. I'm glad he did because it's a very interesting story with a mystery that I found very intriguing. A women and her brother arrive in crowded Paris during the 1896 Exhibition and check into a hotel....or did they?

The film stars Jean Simmons and Dirk Bogarde. It's definitely worth a look. Directed by Antony Darnborough and Terence Fisher.

Message was edited by: molo14 because I forgot to put the date.

  15. Hey there Kyle,

That was great. You really came across well and you had some interesting thoughts on *Meet John Doe* and classic films in general. Again it just seems too short. I could listen to all of you guys for a lot longer! :)

It's interesting how everyone's "voice" here on the board just kind of fit with how you all look in person (on the tube at least). You seemed really at ease in that chair. Almost like nothing phases you! :) I loved what you said about how a bartender only has something like this happen to them "in the movies". I think Robert Osborne laughed at that. I did too. I think you may have a new customer! Let us know if he shows up on that stool.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how well I thought you did. This has been a great week!

    Bravo! :)

  16. Lynn that was great! You looked very sharp and classy, and heck, I got emotional watching you get emotional. Darn it all! :) It was such a pleasure to see and hear you talk about this film after getting to know you on the boards. I know this film means a lot to you, and you got to present it to a national audience from the seat of honor. I can't think of anyone more deserving than you. I thought you did a superb job and I think Mr. Osborne was impressed.

I remember participating in your John Ford Western's class last summer. I learned a lot then and, thanks to this board, I just keep gaining more insight into these great films. I look forward to your new class this summer Professor.

Well done my friend, well done. :)

  17. Hey Theresa,

*definitely Charlie's Bar. which one are you heading for?*

Well in the short term I'll head over to Charlie's, however in the not so long term you'll probably find me at Chumley's Rest! :)

*oh goodness, how could i forget my pooka?*

Don't worry. I'm sure your pooka will find you.

*i wish all of you could come with me. we could have a Harvey screening party and have some fun!*

Well that does sound like fun! I'm not sure what it would be like having us all in the same room. I have a feeling you ladies might gang up on a certain fellow poster. Long black gloves, cold ropes, everybody spiffed!! Hey that really does sound like fun!! :D

*oh goodie! i guess we have a lot of chatting to do!*

It's a great film. It gives you a lift but it also gives you a lot to ponder. We've talked about Elwood a lot. How he might have come to first meet Harvey. Why Harvey might have picked out Elwood.

Was Elwood sad? Was he lonely? Both? What was he like before he met Harvey? Is Elwood using Harvey to escape or to cope? Has Elwood really found a better way?

Now you ponder all that and get right back to me. :D

I think one of the messages of *Harvey* is to not always worry about what others think. Conformity is not always the best path. You have to find whatever joy and peace you can in life.

    As Veta says:

    harvey-15.jpg?t=1239850944

Veta is a great character! She is just hilarious with all of her frantic gestures and her wonderful little comments throughout the film.

So do you have a favorite scene? Who is your favorite character?

Whatever you want to chat about regarding the film is fine by me. :)
