I'm actually in love with Gumby, All right, explain that one.
-
You'll notice in that Gumby western clip there are no saloon gals. And Pokey keeps telling Gumby that he's stiff. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Why must you kill me like this! So that's how he got his name.

Special Sales of Classic Titles on DVD & Blu-ray
FrankGrimes replied to filmlover's topic in Classic Film DVD Reviews
Thanks for posting this info, Peter! I'm going to take advantage of this sale. It ends on 5/19. If you look at the titles that are selling the most, it's the upcoming western releases. It's quite a steal. http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewcategory.htm?categoryId=519279&start=25&sortby=&count=#listtop -
?That?s what you get for callin? my girl a tramp.? I'm very good at playing the "stepping stone" guy. I figured if I'd attack you, your real man would come to your rescue then. In otherwords, you owe me... a proper burial.

OMG!!! Those shots of Gloria in the black outfit AND the white outfit made me jump out of my seat. And I'm at work. The mink and robe photos floored me. I actually love women in white more so than black. Okay. Let me rephrase that. How about, I like bad girls in white and good girls in black. I'm starting to really agree with you guys...there's something about the way Gloria looks into the camera. I'm not a guy, but WHOA!!!!! Don't tell me you were on the fence before. Of all the women on this board, I thought you would understand the language Gloria Grahame spoke the most.
-
I know! At least it?s better than ?tramp? though. Every time they call him that in the movie, I get so mad. Nobody calls my Gary a tramp, nobody!!! I agree with you. See how nice I am? "Tramp" fits you much better.

Ford at Fox... and RKO, and MGM, and WB, and Columbia...
FrankGrimes replied to Film_Fatale's topic in Films and Filmmakers
I think we have the same mother. She thought How Green Was My Valley was too dramatic. Elke has MUCH better taste than her dreadful daughter. -
oh my goodness! i thougth the same thing about this ending. i loved this movie! it flowed very harmonious like and "operatic" is the perfect word for it. very beautiful! i love the last scene especially. heehee! Great! You agree with me and not the Snippy One.
-
Yeah it's a real shame they couldn't show Grace Kelly that day. Instead they picked someone with actual acting ability. What were they thinking?! I now must depart before the authorities catch up with me. I'm innocent of some charges, but not all.

They have a familiar ring to them? Maybe. Maybe not.

Hitch wasn't ordinary, though. At least not on the inside. You're right, his talents weren't ordinary, but I do believe Alma helped take him to another level. Maybe, maybe not. Those words sound familiar to me.
-
That's true and I do love that about them. I think they were a darling couple just made for each other. They were fortunate to find each other, especially Hitch to find Alma. I firmly believe Alma was just as brilliant as Hitch. She not only helped craft Hitch's films, she inspired him to do so. The right woman will turn an ordinary man into an extraordinary man. You called Vertigo very romantic on your "Vertigo" thread and I completely agreed with you. Vertigo is a "tortured" romance film. Out of the Past is less romantic than Vertigo. I do find it so because I felt John Ferguson was in love with Madeleine (or who he thought she was) and not just "in lust" with her; otherwise he wouldn't have been so shattered at her death. The music more than anything reinforces that feeling to me. A man will most certainly feel shattered over the death of their lustful desire. The feeling of ice cold water on red-hot desire burns. You are right, Bernard Herrmann's score does help provide Vertigo with the feeling of romanticism. Like I said, there is romance in lust, even obsessive lust. Jeff and Kathie had their very romantic moments, especially when they first met. When a man says, "baby, I don't care" to a woman, he's hopelessly gone.

More Greer Garson?! Ohhhhh, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm someone who likes "Summer Under the Stars" because it seems as if TCM programmer reaches deeper into the catolog for some titles that haven't been airing with great regularity and I already see that with this year's "Summer Under the Stars." My favorite days are Ava Gardner, Barbara Stanwyck, Rita Hayworth, Kim Novak, Ingrid Bergman, Janet Leigh, Peter Lorre, and Richard Widmark. I'm gonna make sure to run out of tapes on Greer's day. I don't have Saratoga Trunk on tape. There's a Linda Darnell film on the schedule!

How do you like these parts Frank? I'm liking, I'm liking! I love it when all the parts fit. Thanks for getting me going this morning, Molo. I'm sticky with Double G now.

Howdy, Bronx Blossom! -- I'm definitely a member of the blockhead gang. When I took the Peanuts quiz last year, I came back as blockhead Chuck. I loved the reward the blockhead gang was dreamin' of. Howdy, Texas Tea! -- I liked your photos despite your horrible taste in men.

I have mixed emotions right now. I thought I was being too insecure about my looks to go out with the intimidatingly good looking Tyrone Power. But after seeing the photos of you both (one of you looks suspiciously like George Bush) I want to rescind my offer of a possible Jules & Jim assignation with you. Hey, I'm looking pretty damn spiffy in that suit if I may say so myself. And I may. CM:"Errol Flynn might not take "no" for an answer; (remember that statutory thing?)" FG: "Were you planning on trying some "no's" on him?" Well...you know on second thought...I'm just a girl who can't say no. Now you're talking my language. You're the only one, too. FG: "I would have thought Mitchum with you, CM. But after a little thought, I don't think he'd show the patience with you like Gable would." Saaay Frank, are you saying that patience would be needed with me??? Am I a nag, a nudge? Whattup wit' dat? Nag? Hardly. Yappin'? Heartily. Gable could take your flappin', but Mitch may think to slappin'. Not all men are equipped to deal with a lively gal who speaks her mind. Ya feel me?

I suppose those are all the home truths about both movies. I'm merely sharing my opinion, not speaking truths. Trust me, there can be a big difference. I persist in seeing them through my la vie en rose glasses, I ignore all the sordid truths underneath. And I really love that about you. Everyone can experience the same thing differently. I'm the cheap seats part of the audience that directors like Tourneur and Hitch liked to pull the wool over. And I want the wool kept right where it is. Hitch liked to amuse himself and Alma. I think they enjoyed the entire process of making a movie together. The greatest directors speak two languages at the same time: the spoken and the unspoken. I don't like shallow affairs, which is unfortunately what these "romances" if you can call them that, boil down to. You called Vertigo very romantic on your "Vertigo" thread and I completely agreed with you. Vertigo is a "tortured" romance film. Out of the Past is less romantic than Vertigo. Shallow affairs rarely start off as such. They feel like true love at the outset. Passion-fueled romance usually starts off too hot, which makes it very difficult to maintain warmth over time. I believe true love needs to be built brick-by-brick. Home, not hotel.

Thanks for posting your list! I only like two of them. Yes, I know, Sterling Hayden and Lee Marvin.

It's odd that when I think about it, Jeff's character isn't likable either, it's just that Robert Mitchum makes him so because of the funny way he has with the dialogue. I think there are things to like about Jeff. He's basically a guy that gets trapped in his own desires. He tries to fight those demons but those kind of demons are tough to ward off. I wonder now why I even like this movie. I think it's the dialogue and Mitchum. I'm sure that is it, but your next line is just as important... It bewitches me into thinking it's wonderful and romantic when it's really anything but. Lust is passionate romance. It's usually driven by sexual desires, which can make a man very romantic. Lustful flames will often burn out but they can be reignited with the passage of time. Vertigo is another film that's about lust (sexually-driven romance) and the reigniting of those flames. Vertigo has the ending you wish for in Out of the Past -- Scottie lives but his flame, Madeleine, burns out. In Out of the Past, both flames burn out as one.
