Kyle In Hollywood's CENSORED Poster Gallery
FrankGrimes replied to hlywdkjk's topic in Remembering Kyle in Hollywood
I can't think of a better poster for today, Kyle. Wonderful selection! -
Your captions have me rollin', Kyle! You know how to write, my friend. I think your mesmerzing photos have opened the collective eyes of the Gabby Girls. They cannot resist the REAL man of May 7th, Gabby Hayes.

Hi, Skimpole! Very interesting question and thread idea. The first director/actress tandem that came to mind for me was Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich. von Sternberg and Marlene definitely fall in the "erotic current" category.

Yes, but TMWSLV is very much about myth and OotP is a film noir which however expressionistic, is still grounded in reality. Excellent point about The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance being a "myth" film. That is very true. It's why it's one of my very favorites. I'm someone who believes film noir is presented as alternate reality. I consider film noir to be male nightmares. It's a mix of reality and fantasy, particularly from a male point of view. I feel that film noir, more than any other "genre," captures the feeling of male desire and temptation. I feel the lyrical dialogue of the movie and the photography are fantastical elements enough, without such a high-strung and to me, forced, ending. Nightmares often end horribly. Out of the Past is a shining example. I feel the weight of the Production Code chopping off the movie. At least they inserted the shots with Dickie Moore, which I like. I absolutely love the emotional ending with Dickie Moore. That was the cherry on top for me. I'm not sure how would stage the individual shots but I would not kill Jeff. Kathie, maybe. Or maybe I'd have given even her just a moment where she actually feels something besides selfishness. Kathie is incapable of such feelings. She's for self. And as long as she's living, Jeff is dead. I don't like her character and I want to. It's very much like the kind of woman weak men always fall for, though, so I understand why they wrote her so heartless. I'm not interested in seeing this kind of female character in movies, though. Not one bit. You know I really love that about you. I also love your honesty. Kathie IS the kind of woman a man can fall for despite their knowing better. She's the darkest of desires.

My feeling is the ending they used is the cop-out. The unrealistic or "operatic" ending. It is a very operatic ending. I like that. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is also "operatic" to me. My ending would not be a cop-out. What's your ending? Would Kathie live? Does Jeff choose to leave Ann because he feels he's no good for her? Does he leave her because he doesn't love her? What's his reasons? But then, I'm odd, you see I am so much more interested in Jeff the man, the character, than the one-dimensional symbol. Jeff is very symbollic of man's desires and self-doubt, but I also love Jeff the character, as well. As a guy, I can associate with Jeff a lot.

I've just been using the instructions given by Fred and Rich down in the General Issues Forum. Those two know what they speak. I respect them both. Next I have to work on getting the sizes right. Dobbsy knows how to tinker with the sizes. I change the size of the caps I take with an image editing program... but not always. I will work on some of Gloria. What parts? So many great pics have already been posted in this thread. I don't mind repeat viewings. I hope those pics of us didn't burst CM's bubble Not a chance. She's a serious man killer. She's just looking to use us up before moving on to her real man.

GWTW Named All Time Favorite in Poll

oh would you drop the being mean about the situation? Never! I love that! you still have me confused. you told me that april WAS my pretend doll! holy joe! heehee! April IS the name of your pretend doll. -
Hiya, Coopsy's Indecorous Girl -- You forgot that he looks smashing in lipstick and mascara. No man looked prettier. Howdy, Mrs. Gabby -- And you say you don't know the deepest desires of what women want. Ohhh, do tell! Well, your lack of presence is, by far, one of the most thoughtful gifts you could possibly bestow upon us. Freedom from you is such a precious gift, you are far too kind. I'm so emotional right now, the only words I can think to utter are: thank YOU. So my absence is the deepest desire of women? That actually adds up. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Be careful now.

In other words...I'm charming. Snippily so. -
I'm not that pessimistic. Uh-huh. Nor do I think Jeff's reasons were unmixedly noble. He was going off with the woman he wanted from the beginning. He couldn't get Kathie out of his system. She's the kind of girl that sticks in a man's system forever and Jeff was smart enough to know this. He was also smart enough to know it wasn't going to work. He ultimately sacrificed himself for Ann. It's too "pat" the way it ends. Men seldom pay the price by death for messing with the "wrong" gal. Seldom doesn't mean never. And this is the dark world of film noir, after all. I think it's probably better for Ann that he did end up that way, That's how I feel about it. but a more ambiguous ending, with Jeff just drifting off, would have suited me more because it could turn out well for him...or not. That would have been a cop out ending to me; too easy. Either way he still pays because Ann was his one shot at real happiness. Ann represented Jeff's idealistic desires (but also self-doubt) but Kathie represented Jeff's real desires (and confidence/comfort). Many films noir use women to portray the good and the bad of man's darkest desires since woman is the most desirable of all for man.

You called me charming? Thank you! In a heartless way, yes, you are quite charming. -
You're on a roll tonight, Fordy Guns! I love those McLintock! photos, and your favorite cowgirls pics are very nice. Maureen O'Hara's beauty sparkles.

I think it's a terrible ending! That's not the ending I wanted for Jeff and Ann. It fits each character perfectly. Jeff got messed up with the wrong gal and he ended up paying the price for it. He sacrificed himself to save Ann, ala Doniphon in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

You might have guessed I've been learning how to post pics And you're doing one helluva job! I liked that presentation. Do you have any Gloria presentations?

I never heard words that made better sense. -
What's the word, Miss Gun for Hire -- It is a wonderful movie and it would be perfect if I could just change the ending. What?! The ending is one of the best in film noir.

Top 10 Movies You Most Want to See
FrankGrimes replied to MissGoddess's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Hi, PK! -- I'm always fascinated by your obsessive-completist thinking. It's very intriguing to me. So do you have a top ten overall, or maybe a top five or three? I'm curious to know what unseen film or films would excite you the most. -
Hey there, Molo -- Thanks for the Double G bump. I'll even quote myself from way back near the beginning of this thread when someone was asking about a biography on her: I'm not sure, because I've stayed away from the book. I don't want to know too much. I'm satisfied with the glimpses I get of that beautiful enigma up on the screen as I watch in the dark. I've interested in reading about a lot of film people, but for some reason I stay away from that sort of thing where Gloria is concerned. If I were to read up on a performer, it would be Gloria. I find her to be the most interesting of the performers that I like. I totally agree about Ida Lupino. She is most like Grahame to me in a lot of ways. There was always something bubbling under the surface with her as well, and something behind the eyes. She was amazing. She probably had a firmer grasp on her talent than Gloria. There was a definite determination in her face it seemed to me. She had a certain hardness that Gloria maybe lacked. It was in her nature. It came out in the characters she played. When provoked she was more apt to stand and fight while Gloria might retreat leaving chaos in her wake or messy situations left unsettled. It's hard to say because Gloria was so enigmatic and there is something to be said for simply existing in a scene on film and being able to give off what she gave off in understated nuances that can keep a viewer guessing. There are some similarities between the two, in my opinion, and that's why they both rate so high on my list. That was wonderfully expressed. You hit on some major feelings with me in regards to both Gloria and Ida. In fact, you have helped me to understand why I'm drawn to Gloria so much. I'm very much drawn to Gloria's "weakness." Even though many of Gloria's characters present a sure face, they are often quite unsure. It's all for show. She's almost always playing a vulnerable girl; a girl that he can be easily led and manipulated. Ida is usually quite the opposite. Her characters tend to be stronger and more confident. On Gloria trivia: daneldorado gave this hint to one of his questions on the trivia thread. Gloria was the answer that this hint is referring too: Hint: The person we are asking about is also the correct answer to a Trivia question that pops up all the time, both on this thread and in general conversation. I had no idea about this. What is the trivia question that Gloria is the answer to that pops up in general conversation? daneldorado never said. Does anyone know? If it's not the tissue dealy, I have no idea. Hola, CineBaby -- Thanxxx for asking my taste in men. It could be you & Frank. Both? My, aren't we frisky. No...not Tyrone Power. He is absolutely gorgeous to look at, but maybe too pretty. I like that. That's actually how I feel about Grace Kelly. Errol Flynn might not take "no" for an answer; (remember that statutory thing?) Were you planning on trying some "no's" on him? I'd have to go with the King. Gable and I will join you guys for drinks at the Mocambo, after we come from the Brown Derby. Ahhh, yes. The King is man enough to handle a lively gal like yourself. Message was edited by: CineMaven: (Had to cross off Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum and Hedy Lamarr off my list). I would have thought Mitchum with you, CM. But after a little thought, I don't think he'd show the patience with you like Gable would.

And why are you "Yaying" MrGrimes? Because I'm going to return from my trip fat!? You will not return fat. I'm "yaying" because I like it when a girl doesn't deprive herself of eating tasty foods. It's all about moderation, not deprivation. Enjoy.
