  1. Howdy, ButtersneakGRACE -- if youre dead, how do you find yourself typing these words, clearly you arent dead.....

Am I dead? Maybe I'm an impostor. Have you seen Laura?

or you could have come back to haunt me and april. oh no! this means we cant kill you again! APRIL!!!!!! Where are you?!

This April you speak of is a ghost, too. How many times must I remind you of this?

  2. Not that I like rubbing it in....BUT I DO!!!

    What, the poison?

I guess a lot of men really love "Gone with the Wind." :P

The Second Favorite Book among Different Groups

While The Bible is number one among each of the different demographic groups,

there is a large difference in the number two favorite book. For men, that belongs

to Lord of the Rings while women cite Gone with the Wind as their number two.

There is also a generational divide. For Echo Boomers (those aged 18-31) their

second favorite is the Harry Potter series while Generation X (those aged 32-43)

is split between The Stand and Angels and Demons. Baby Boomers (those aged

44-62) and Matures (those aged 63 and older) think alike and both cite Gone with

    the Wind.

While it?s not surprising that Gone with the Wind is the second favorite book in

the South, it?s also number two in the Midwest. Easterners are more partial to the

Lord of the Rings series and Westerners cite The Stand as their second favorite

book. Whites and Hispanics also say Gone with the Wind is their second favorite

while African Americans say it is Angels and Demons. Educational levels have

the largest differences. Those with high school or less education cite Gone with

the Wind as their second favorite book of all time while Americans with some

college education say it is The Stand. College graduates go to Lord of the Rings

and those with a post graduate education are tied as both Lord of the Rings and

To Kill a Mockingbird come in number two for them.

Finally, they may not agree on candidates, but one thing that brings together

partisans is their favorite book. For Republicans, Democrats and Independents,

the top two books are the same ? The Bible followed by Gone with the Wind.

  3. And who said Darcy and Miss Bennett were killed!

    Ohhh, nobody. :D

    You're spoiled!

    That's besides the point. :)

You were busy rolling in the dirt with Genie-beanie, not locked out in the cold.

Shockingly, I was treated with great loving care earlier in the evening by some lass with class. But then later on, I was told to expect a little fun. I was all happy, full of great expectation, but...

    ibbetson51.jpg

  4. No I didn't :( .

At least you are honest. I respect that.

I watched about 20 minutes and the print didn't look that good to me that they showed.

Sigh. Gagman said the recent TCM airing (this past Sunday) featured a very good print. He thought it was the best print of the film he has seen.

I actually lost interest after about the first five minutes

Five minutes?! You're such a patient film-watcher. I really don't see how you would lose interest at the five-minute mark because this is what you see...

    sunrise47.jpg

    :P:D

  5. listen honey boy, thats not nice!

Neither is locking me out in the cold. I'm all cried out.

but i didnt leave on purpose, my internet was being funny! you just love picking on me and my internet connections. goodness!

That's your excuse for everything. The reason Smithy doesn't remember anything is because of your internet connection. Mary Rafferty is a homewrecker because of your internet connection. Well, let's just say that I didn't watch Pride and Prejudice yet because of your internet connection. :P:P:P

  6. Good Day, Bronxie -- I've often wondered if blondes have more fun.

They do. It's just those who are around them don't. :P

I'm just not the blonde type

I understand. Not everyone can be snippy. :D

What exactly is that carnival trick that allows Molly to get "zapped" by electricity? Can you or someone explain it to me?

I'll have to check that out again.

Frank, does the smell of alcohol make you break out in a sweat, or is it only me?

It does, but not the way you believe. I'm boringly dry.

Be careful, I'm a crotchety Baby Boomer who misses her old Selectric typewriter, a world without cell phones, and Officer Joe Bolton introducing The Three Stooges.

I don't miss the typewriter days, but I've never been big on cell phones and I can watch the Stooges most anytime.

Guten Tag, Honey Bear -- Mr Grimes, did you spy on Mr Darcy and Miss Bennett at the ball?

    I didn't kill them!

Howdy, Cajun Cook -- So do you really think I'm under y'all's spell? I don't seem to know where Hadleyville is. Do you know where it's at? I also haven't found my way to a Maryton ball.

yes i know this for a fact!

    Is that so?

maryton ball? how would you know what it is called unless you have seen it? (gasps)

Keep gasping because I haven't seen Pride and Prejudice. I was going to watch it last night but someone locked the door on me again and I nearly froze to death. I cried icicles.

  7. You're not suggesting that one of your femme fatale's would tear her own top to get her way, would you?

Ohhh, no, of course not. A femme fatale would never think of doing such a thing. They are always square.

Surely you meant to put that blame on poor Jon Dall.

    Pure empathy.

What would your harem of noir babes say if they thought you were blaming them?

    They'd think it's a typical day. :D

  8. Hey what are you doing in here?!

This is the film noir forum, right? J-Girl told me it was, so I believed her.

I know Sunrise is supposed to be good,

Supposed to be good?! It IS great!

but I just couldn't get into it.

Now did you watch the entire film? Come clean.

  10. Hey, Hunter Hearst Helmsley -- Think I will be watching Mogombo soon - if you mean the Clark Gable movie or is it Magambo ?

That's the one. It's a very interesting triangle film. The sexual subtext is thick.

Hiya, AvaG -- absolutly, i agree that was the point of her character and she did it very well. didnt dislike her just found her hard to listen to after awhile the kind of girl u knew meant well but was hard to keep hearing

Linda Nordley is definitely an ice princess. Grace is the perfect actress for such a role. :)

yes i really liked her in To Catch A Theif! I loved how she kept coaxing Cary on and on and on..it was great..fun to watch them....

That's why I love Francie so. She's playfully devilish but it's all because she likes "The Cat."

thanks for the pics again Frank!

    You're welcome!

  11. that sounds like a plan to me! im surely the honey dutchman wouldnt mind....would you?

Would I mind shelling out over $200 to see Tobacco Road? Yes, I mind!

and then there will be people all over the world who will be under our spell, so we an rule the world! muwahaha! heehee!

So do you really think I'm under y'all's spell? I don't seem to know where Hadleyville is. Do you know where it's at? I also haven't found my way to a Maryton ball.

  12. i looove those pics..my honey bear...lol....she was sooo sassy in that movie

"Honey Bear" is one of my favorite characters in film. You're right, she's very sassy... on the outside. On the inside, she's looking for love. She's got a lip, but it's a jealous, wanting lip.

as much as i really do love Grace Kelly god was she beautiful...she so ANNOYED me in her role in Magambo...i felt like Ava did about her...i was constantly rolling my eyes as Ava did in the movie when she spoke....lol...very annoying

I think that's the point of Grace's character, "Linda Nordley." Linda is a dignified, icy married woman who starts to melt thanks to Vic and the environment. I definitely prefer Honey Bear to Linda but I don't dislike Linda.

but greeeeeat movie no dought...i loved it...wish i was watching it right now..lol...dont own it yet that will be the next i will get from TCM....

I'm a Mogambo fan. I enjoy the fireworks.

scinse were talking about Grace i just want to say my fav movie with her i think is To Catch A Theif with my number 1 man Cary Grant! Wow...the 2 of them together...made for some Steeeeamy scenes..

Speaking of fireworks... I love Francie. I simply adore her.

  13. Ciao, Kyller Kyle -- So, which one of ya is standing over FrankGrimes body? I'd like to remove it. It's drawing flies - and a crowd. Traffic here is bad enough.

If the girl holding the gun is the guilty party, I'd say that's Butterscotch. But I'm wondering if she's a patsy. Sweet T has been known to fall under the spell of bad influences.

I am still curious as to who pulled the trigger on FG. And if he really is "pushing daisies"or if he just got "clipped". If he's still around, I hope he doesn't try to finger me. I'm just the bag boy.

You're never up to any good, but I wouldn't suspect you as a killer. Conversely, there are others around here who are quite deadly.

Hola, Murderess -- He draws flies regardless. He won't be totally out until I post the screencaps of Gene Tierney in Tobacco Road.

I thought skipping a few showers would turn Ellie May on.

Plant 'em and read over 'em, plant 'em and read over 'em...

Somebody is in a hurry to move on.

  14. Hi, Ava G! -- i love those pics of my girl..i hate to say i never saw Whistle Stop....

Whistle Stop is a rather ordinary film but Ava is quite sexy in the film.

and thats cool her and Gloria did a movie together, awesome i would love to see them together!

I've never seen Blonde Fever but I'd love to see it because of Gloria. It's her first film. She was just 20-years-old. Ava supposedly doesn't have that big of a role. Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy are also in the film as what looks to be extras.

  15. Howdy, Fordy Guns! -- I have to keep reminding myself as I watch this movie that it was made in 1941---not 1961. I forgot how sexual it was! Those pics below don't capture how suggestive Gene Tierney looks as she's writhing in the dirt.

I'm writhing in the "dirt." :D Gene is slinky and sneaky. I like it!

Excellent caps! You are definitely making me want to see the film.

Hiya, ButterscotchGENE -- oh dahlink!! thank you for those screencaps!!! i love Tobacco Road! now we cant torture fra kie anymore now though. oh no! we are satisfying him april!

Hush! This is tortururous! To be honest, it actually is real torture because I can't get the film on DVD unless I buy Ford at Fox.

  16. Hola, Lively Dame -- I respect that Frankie G. I respect that.

;) I understand it when you, Bronxie, and others are a little surprised to learn I'm a

such a sucker for Gloria. She's not the first actress that comes to mind when it

comes to classic Sirens but she sings the song I have no resistance to. Gene Tierney

is #2 for me, although Gene doesn't always represent sexuality with me like Gloria

    does.

BTW...I thought Donna Douglas was lovely. She was in that Twilight Zone episode

(about the eye of the beholder) and in "Lover Come Back" as a secretary. But she's

    no Anne Francis! Whew!

I like Elly May. She's on the cute side.

Bonjour, Miss G(ene) -- That's because you haven't seen Ellie May!

I have now! She's sweet and dirty!

Howdy, Sweet T -- figures. heehee! i never get off the hook with you.

Do you want me to throw you back? :D

    I'm right? Are you okay?

now that you mention it, i do feel a touch of warmth in my forehead. and who's fault is that? hmm i wonder!

I warned you about me and headaches.

well if you think about it most classic fans are also familiar with The Bad and the Beautiful and The greatest Show on Earth too. many people love film noir, just not as much as you do. heehee! well maybe Ollie would be right up there with you. heehee!

It's Violet Bick and Ado Annie!

    am i right Ollie?

Ollie took Buffalo Chuck's money and split.

i can't believe i am to agree with you, but i love her performance in In a Lonely Place. it is one of my favs of hers....and you just said why. heehee!

Sometimes you display good taste, T. :P Now I need to find a way to get you away from Coop.

Yes, I like Gene Tierney and Gloria Grahame more than Miss Emotional. I like Barbara Stanwyck and Linda Darnell more than the Princess, too. My favorite of character among those actresses is a Grace character, though. I love Francie in To Catch a Thief.

APRIL!!! did you hear that? he admitted to it! finally! we now the truth. he's been holding out on us! that spell is working better than i thought. heehee!

Now what did I admit to? And why must you continue to talk to your imaginary friend?

i didnt like her character in To Catch a Thief, b/c she wanted to turn him in....the man she loves. how mean is that? paula would never do that to smithy, even if he did have a knife in his hands, which WILL NEVR HAPPEN! heehee!

Francie was just being obstinate and wrong-headed like most blondes tend to be. :D Paula annulled her marriage to Smithy. How cruel!

That's so nice of you to say. In a Lonely Place is a different kind of Gloria for me. She has to project a wider range of emotions in that film and I thought she did a very nice job. I really liked her crying at the end. I thought it was beautiful.

the ending to tht movie made me cry a lot. but i just love it anyway! it is such a touching well made movie with a great story and casting! for me, her character was very strong.

I actually thought Laurel (Gloria Grahame) had a little bit of weakness to her. I think she was afraid of commitment.

  17. Hey there, CineMaven! -- I so want to join the fray, but it's soooo much fun to read your spirited, friendly ribbing and knowledgeable discussion re: Double G. I don't need to add a thing. You guys are saying it all! And she was spectacular!

You can join in whenever you like, CM. You'll only add to the fun.

But Frank, Gloria really affects you more than Ava G? Didja ever see "Pandora..." or "The Killers"??

I have not seen Pandora and the Flying Dutchman or The Killers, so I really haven't see a good "young Ava" film yet. I'm sure my love for Ava will soar after I watch those two films. As of now, I prefer the "mature" Ava in terms of the characters she played. I love "Maxine Faulk" from The Night of the Iguana and "'Honey Bear' Kelly" from Mogambo. Both characters are full of spunk yet both are lonely inside. I'm gonna get On the Beach on DVD later this week because of Ava.

Gloria is just different than all the rest. She's not as gorgeous as Grace Kelly or Gene Tierney and she's not as sexy as Ava, yet she just moves me like no other.

  18. What's up, B? -- It's always great to see you around, even if it's for a little. I see you are your fiery yourself today, too. :D

Inherit the Wind surprised you, huh?

    Yaw.

Well, I love Spencer Tracy and this is one of my favorite of his films. I love him in all the ones with Kate and also the two Father of the Bride flicks...but Inherit the Wind is one compelling film! And his character is super-cool. This one, Boy's Town, and Bad Day At Black Rock, combined with the ones already mentioned are probably my favorite of Spencer Tracy's films.

I knew you were a Spencer fan but I was surprised to see you list Inherit the Wind amongst your very favorites. Inherit the Wind is in my top ten for all-time favorite films. Do you like Fury?

Although I have seen most of his films and there is only one so far that I dislike - Tortilla Flat, which is one of the most annoying movies ever made, IMO. I love Spencer Tracy and John Garfield as a rule, but wow is that film annoying!

I've never Tortilla Flat but you just made me laugh.

Anyway, Inherit the Wind was just a great movie - Spencer Tracy is great, Fredric March is great, and Gene Kelly is great, even though he doesn't dance a step.

I love Gene Kelly in the film. He just lays it on thick. I'm glad he didn't dance a step. ;)

Your lists really didn't surprise me - at least the film part.

    I'm predictably boring.

I was kinda surprised you are a rap fan.

Most people are. I'm guessing there may be only one other rap fan on this board and that's it.

Sadly, we do not share a single musical interest with the exception of Prince and Huey Lewis and the News.

Sadly? I really don't expect many people on the TCM board to share my interests in music. You do gain big points for mentioning you like Huey, though. Most people don't. ;)

My interests are much more around Bruce Springsteen (my hero), Journey, .38 Special, Guns & Roses, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails, The Gin Blossoms, Counting Crows, Bon Jovi, The Black Crows, Matchbox 20, Alanis Morissette, Fuel, Daughtry, etc.

I like The Boss, Journey, and .38 Special. I actually have a "best of" cd of .38 Special. I went from 80s pop to rap in the late-80s and you went grunge/alternative. Of the artists you list, I like Nine Inch Nails the most.

I will say this though - although I am not particularly a big horror fan, I do like Val Lewton. His films are not blood and gore sort of stuff. They are much more sophisticated. I don't buy many DVD sets of horror films, but I did buy the Val Lewton set that came out a few months ago. I watched some of the films they showed on TCM about that time, and really liked them.

Was that the first time you watched Lewton's films? What Lewton pics have you watched?

Lewton's "horror" films are my favorite because they are horrors of the mind. I'm crazy for psychological flicks. :)

Our tastes really don't intertwine that much. The closest would be Bogie and Missy. That's a pretty good 1-2 punch, though.

  19. Ciao, Sweet T! -- why cant i ever get an easy question out of you?

    That's too dull.

I'm not so sure about the "true" part. I think there are many classic film fans who probably haven't seen Gloria's films noir.

well you are right about that.sorry!

    I'm right? Are you okay?

i guess it just depends upon what kind of movies you like huh?

Most definitely. I think the majority of TCM's viewing audience is more familiar with It's a Wonderful Life and Oklahoma! than film noir.

I think Gloria's best performances are from her films noir, but I believe the masses know her as "Violet Bick" and "Ado Annie."

now that happens to be based on an opinion, silly goose. grabdmama thinks one of her best performances was as "Ado Annie". heehee! but i actually agree with both of you. i love her characters in her films noir, but i also love her as the fiesty girl who just couldnt day no.

It's definitely a matter of opinion. I love Gloria as a femme fatale or a down-on-her-luck gal the most. Although she's really neither of those in In a Lonely Place, which is my favorite performance of hers.

Ahhh, yes, Grace. That would be another musical I'd consider getting. I actually look to get Gene and Gloria films before the highly emotional Grace.

wow! you are actually putting them before miss impassive?

Yes, I like Gene Tierney and Gloria Grahame more than Miss Emotional. :P I like Barbara Stanwyck and Linda Darnell more than the Princess, too. My favorite of character among those actresses is a Grace character, though. I love Francie in To Catch a Thief.

Thanks. I loved seeing Gloria get emotional. She was terrific in the final act of the film.

she was always terrific in the final acts of her movies, frankie.

:D That's so nice of you to say. In a Lonely Place is a different kind of Gloria for me. She has to project a wider range of emotions in that film and I thought she did a very nice job. I really liked her crying at the end. I thought it was beautiful.
