Kyle In Hollywood's CENSORED Poster Gallery
FrankGrimes replied to hlywdkjk's topic in Remembering Kyle in Hollywood
Now we are talkin'! That's a glorious poster for FRITZ LANG's Metropolis! It makes up for all the painful posters of Coop and Ford I had to endure previously. Almost. Thanks, Kyle! -
All of the characters have also been hurt or disapppointed by a lover or spouse. Roslyn is divorcing a man who neglected and took her for granted, Perce's girlfriend ran off with his friend, Gay's wife cheated on him, Gido's wife died and even Isabel is a divorcee (though she's the most happy of the bunch---she's even friends with her ex and his wife!). It's interesting to see how they all cope with their pasts in different ways. You're exactly right. The film is about lost love and the horrible attempts at coping with the pain. You can tell the script is more from a man's point of view since it's rare to see three men facing such heartbreak. Women are often painted as the sufferers in love more so than men, who are expected just to shrug it off and move on. The "mother" aspect of Roslyn also makes the film very "male." The most "difficult" character to me is also (not coincidentally) the most "educated"---Gido (Eli Wallach). I also think he's the most deeply conflicted. He loves the memories of his war time flying---but he was traumatized by the combat; he loved his wife---but he feels guilty over how she died. He actually understands Roslyn pretty well ("you've got the gift of life") but in the end he tries to use that knowledge for his own benefit---not hers. I think he's also very competitive with Gay. He met Roslyn first but what happened is probably what always happened when the ladies saw his friend. Brilliant observations. "Conflicted" is the right word for Gido. I believe Gido was the closest to happiness of the four but the death of his wife crippled him. He cannot continue building his home without her. Roslyn was bringing him back to life. Gido is hard to like, but Huston once again is not judgemental. Gido's like that crazy teacher in Night of the Iguana. Gido is definitely the least likable character in The Misfits. He's very selfish, which feeds his jealous anger. He's too possessive of Roslyn. He's the spoiled child. I think Miss Fellowes (you gotta love the heavy-handed names) in The Night of the Iguana represented sexual repression, especially lesbian sexual repression. The irony of her character was that she was just as sexually tortured as Shannon (Richard Burton). Perce (Monty Clift) has potential, if he can reconcile things with his family, but it doesn't look like that will happen. I think what his mother allowed to happen upon her marriage is just awful, and I admit I'm totally on his side of things. Perce falls for Roslyn but I'm not sure any girl could straighten him out. Two women have "betrayed" him in his mind and he could be on his way to cynicism unless a really strong minded and positvie woman steps in and replaces that dear "Mom". You hit the nail on the head with Perce: he wants a mother figure in his life. Perce was very comfortable with Roslyn and he left her on good terms. He liked how Roslyn "mothered him" above all else. Perce was even more of a child than Roslyn, if you can believe it. Like you said, Roslyn is more child than "Mom" type. She was very motherly to the guys, but she was too childish to actually be a mother. It's as if the guys were all big teddy bears to her. She just wanted to hug them all at once. Interestingly enough, I don't believe any of the relationships were fueled by sex. I think all were looking for love and the feeling of being wanted above else. All four are emotionally needy. Roslyn is being very "motherly" in the following cap. Mother's milk, if you will. I love this shot because it shows Roslyn with a hand on Gay and a hand on Perce. Perce is a child in the arms of his "mother," Roslyn. Gido is jealous of all the attention Perce and Gay are getting from Roslyn, so he takes to working on his house in the middle of night. This brings Roslyn over to him. Like a little boy, Perce is wanting to know if his "mother," Roslyn, saw him.

Ohhh, so you're not going to just "sit there" then. You'll sit other places, too. You've mentioned the Misfits on two threads already, so I guess that's where your mind and heart are at right now. I'll see what I can do for ya.
-
But the movie isn't twenty minutes long, Roslyn. You better not drink a lot of tea before you go or you will go and go.
-
Four?! Now how in the world are you going to get to all those screenings?
-
Every showing? How many showings are they having, Roslyn?
-
What was the best prop in a movie? TIE BREAKER!

My vote is for the the "ruby red slippers" in The Wizard of Oz. I cannot believe I just passed over Citizen Kane. Boy, did that hurt. -

You mean Bunny? She's lost. She's not lost, she's just missing. You can have the last shot because I won't bring Kyle's terrific thread down. Well, at least more than I normally do. So go ahead and give me your best. Lest you forget -- I will get you back. -
Good Evening, Boca Bronxie! -- I knew you'd enjoy that clip, Frank! Do you know what I really liked? I loved when Gloria looked at her reflection in the table and said to herself, "sucker." Priceless. It's usually the guy who needs to do that with Gloria, not the other way around. I also liked how Gloria said she wasn't lonely (with a stiff upper lip ), yet later admitted the truth -- she was indeed lonely. Gloria looked very good as a brunette I thought. I was shocked to see Gloria as a brunette. It was very jarring at first, but I came around. I definitely prefer her as a blonde. Hey, who would have thought Stanley Kramer could be so arty and symbolic about sex? I'm looking forward to this on TCM. It's sooooooo over the top, too. That wild stallion wants loose in the worst way. I was just waiting for those music swells to force open the gate.

You are two posts away from 9500 and 9000 of them feature you sticking your tongue out at me. Why do you hate me so? Is it because I don't wear lipstick or use pancake foundation like Mary Cooper? There's a film on TCM with a very pretty blonde girl in it tonight. -

As a favor please take a few minutes and Vote in the TCM Programming Challenge thread found in General Discussions. I would appreciate it greatly and the Challengers have earned some recognition for their excellent efforts. Thanks! I would have voted, but all those Coop and Ford posters that you posted took all my energy away. I'll be there, Kylefornia. I actually have not pored over any schedule yet, so it's going to be very interesting to see what has been cooked up. All I know is that I'm not voting for Sugarpuss because she has awful taste. Why do you let her participate? It has to be pity. -
Hiya, Lynn! -- Have you seen the movie that inspired the Cannonball Run ? It's called Gumball Rally with Tim McIntire (who was great in a little seen 70's film American Hot Wax ), Michael Sarrazin (when he was hot and heavy with Jacqueline Bisset) and Gary Busey (before he went crazy and before his hit in the Buddy Holly Story ) I have not seen Gumball Rally, but I have seen The Buddy Holly Story, which I like. The Cannonball Run is not a good film, but it's a link to my childhood, hence its value to me. I pretty much like the majority of comedies from the 80s because it was my era. I was 9-18 years old in the decade. My tastes have matured quite a bit since then, but I am not embarrassed to say I still love the 80s and its comedies. I refuse to mature too much. Hey, Posi Punk -- Frank thanks for posting some screen shots of the Cannonball Run . It just made my night. You're welcome, Kim. I just got bad news and I was a little down. I hope everything is okay. We can't have an upbeat gal like you down.

Who did you have a Crush on when you were a kid???
FrankGrimes replied to Victor's topic in General Discussions
The "paint" step is probably what the problem was for me, Laffite. WMP 10 allows you to name your file and then save it directly to "My Pictures." Thanks for the clearing up the problem for me. -

Hey, Laffite -- I tried everything with WMP 11, including what you said, but none of it worked for me. I about lost my mind in the process. -

Ciao, Krushed Kyle -- It's the purdy pitchures, Hollywood. That's all there is to it. Honest. Honest. -
Hey, Punky Brewster (I couldn't resist ) -- Yes! Better Off Dead is actually a movie I own in my library of films. Better Off Dead and Top Secret! are my "goto films" when I need a pick me up. Super Fuzz..wow I have not thought of that movie in forever. I actually saw that one at the theater when I was super young. Wow! I cannot believe ANYONE saw Super Fuzz in the theater. I'm totally impressed. Cannonball Run ! Those scenes with Sammy Davis Jr and Dean Martin were my favorite. I'm a fan of The Cannonball Run. Yes, it's true, it's possible to love classic film and The Cannonball Run. Obscure films from the 80s? How about this one: Clint Walker, Murray Hamilton, and Bud Cort performing a musical number as zombies. Now that's pure cinema. They were all "doomed."

Gloria on a horse! Now we're talkin'! I've never seen Not as a Stranger but it's gonna air on TCM in late-May. Did you watch the entire clip, Bronxie? The end of the clip is humorous. It fits the "sex scene" thread. Mitch frees the pent up wild stallion and then forcefully grabs Gloria and lays one on her. Gee, I wonder what happened next. The music swells during that scene are hilarious. Thanks for the clip! That got my juices flowin'.

Gloria looks a little waxy to me there. The waxier (and wackier), the better.

What's up, Fuller Gal -- Now you're a "posi" and not a "poser," right? How do you post those screen shots!! I am dying to know!! I use Windows Media Player 10. I upgraded to Windows Media Player 11, but for some damn reason, I couldn't take caps with it, so I went back to WMP 10. All I do is play a DVD with WMP 10, pause the film at the moment where I'd like to take a cap and then save the cap to my hard drive (My Pictures). I then upload the cap to Photobucket and post that link on the board. I usually resize (shrink) my caps so that I don't blow out threads. Hahahaha----I think you are my favorite poster!!!! U rule!! Thanks, Kim. You ain't too shabby yourself, Bogie Girl. I love your upbeat attitude. You are easily one of the most enthusiastic board members. Here's Harrison Ford and River Phoenix in The Mosquito Coast -
Hey, Ollie -- FrankG, oh I hope you know I love those sick sick puns - whether you create 'em first, or only in reply. I thought I'd mess with ya a little. I consider you to be one of the best board members because you deftly combine serious and humorous. You're very entertaining. If a person can make you think one moment and laugh the next, you got something. You got something. The coffeeshop, by the way, is deep into showing whole movies now - they've partnered with a video-store to supply DVDs and the coffee shop has a rack of "today's specials". I'm not in town at the moment, but word is this is popular addition. The films are playing in silent mode with subtitles, and sometimes they've got 3 films showing on that long open wall now. Sounds like great fun. That's phenomenal! I love the "today's specials." Very creative. The video store could be very imaginative with their promotions, too. So have you and Buffalo Chuck received any kickback on this yet? Hola, Bronxie -- You got something but I'm not sure what the heck it is yet? I'll take aim at you. I just took a bullet for you, Punny Girl. Is coconut custard o.k.? I'd rather wear it than eat it. Pumpkin pie is my favorite but I LOVE all the berry pies. Pies over cakes unless it's ice cream cake, Cookiepuss. Gloria is getting ready for a pie fight. Or maybe something close to that. Sort of.

Good Evening, Lady of the Evening -- So she never does tell him what she meant to? Now I really MUST see this movie again! Yes, you must see the movie again. But I think it's obvious what she wants to say to him. That actress reminds me of Natalie Wood for some reason. She's very striking. Hey, she does look like Nat! Karin Dor is fantastic in Topaz. She delivers one of the most passionate performances in any Hitch film. Without Karin Dor, Topaz would be empty and cold. I find the adulterous relationship in Topaz to be important since spying is basically adulterous -- at least one half of it. Exchanging "secret information" is the name of the adulterous game.

The famous "shot" from Topaz.
