Bonjour, Mademoiselle D?esse -- Very nice photos from Vertigo. They are very, very blue. You like that outfit? I'm surprised any guy would like it. I've never liked it. I think it's on the dowdy side. In fact, the white strapless gown and the swim outfit are the only ones I care for in her wardrobe for To Catch a Thief. I have always thought Francie's clothes should have been better. But then, I've never been as fond of Edith Head as of other designers. Dowdy?! Ouch! Yes, I LOVE that outfit. It's very "spring fun" and fresh feeling to me. I also love how it accentuates Grace's lovely figure, especially her hips. I think she looks delicious.

i just thought of two other maids i cant believe i forgot about. this morning i watched There Goes My Heart and Patsy Kelly was in it. this made me think of Cowboy and the Lady, where patsy and Mabel Todd played merle oberon's maids. "you dont exactly sizzle miss." heehee!

What's the score, Miss Gun for Hire -- Well, no you'll probably like the chemistry between the performers in 2H&HN best. All righty. High Sierra is a darker film and we know how you love the dark. Yessum. But if you're expecting Lauren to be like Jean Arthur in Only Angels Have Wings---don't. The two movies are very similar and even use lots of the same dialogue but Lauren is altogether less emotional and "cooler" than Jean's "Bonnie". Bonnie was warm and a little silly while "Slim" is guarded and sarcastic. In fact, I would say her performance is very stylized and that's because she was so young and Hawks was guiding her every step of the way. "Slim" is his Trilby. I didn't know To Have and Have Not and Only Angels Have Wings were similar. Now my interest level has really gone up. But underneath the sardonic words everyone (good guys) in To Have and Have Not loves eachother (as long as you know the answer to "Was you ever bit by a dead bee?") It's that sappy? I better return to my dark and lonely place. Hey there, In a Lowenly Place (not lovely place) -- Ah-oh. My basis is v-e-ry similar to MissG's regarding HIGH SIERRA. TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT is the least "dark" of the four. We know you're a lover of the snappy repartee, but words fade -- dark is forever. "Dark is forever." Ooohh, I like that one. IN A LONELY PLACE is the obvious choice for your No. 1 -- two words, "Gloria"and "Grahame". Two more? "Nicholas" and "Ray" (even though those four words didn't get along so well). You know the score. I just love this line that a fella named Rod Crawford wrote about Gloria at IMDb: ' loving appreciative male company; "a bit loony." ' I'm not sure about these words from Denny Jackson at IMDb, though: "She was, without a doubt, one of the finest actresses ever to grace the screen. She did, indeed, remind legions of fans of the girl next door." The girl next door, huh? Well now. "It wasn't the way I looked at a man, it was the thought behind it." - Gloria Grahame Yep. The girl next door. I hope you haven't set your expectations too high for it. I probably do. In a Lonely Place and Kiss Me Deadly are two films that I have very high hopes for. I have both on DVD. DARK PASSAGE is the one I anxiously await your reaction to. That's the one I went out on a limb in predicting that high, so don't cut it off. I find this to be very interesting because my expectation level is the lowest of the group for this film.

tv/movie couples who should have been married
FrankGrimes replied to butterscotchgreer's topic in Your Favorites
Bad Day, Bad Witch -- Who says I want an antidote? Of course you don't...that's part of the spell! And you like the funny tune humming in your head, don't you? Pywacket is "familiar" with all those symptoms... So that's how the spell works. I may think that I don't want to be free but in reality, I desperately want to be free. Okay. Another couple who should have gotten married (had they avoided heights, it could have been a successful marriage): Now do you honestly believe Scottie and Judy could have gotten married? Explain that one. Good Day, Good Witch -- You picked on poor Kim? How mean! hey im trying to give up that "mean" phrase for lent, and youre not helping silly!! "Mean" is my favorite word and my only behavior. i would never pick on poor kim, but i might try. why not? she can pick on me, and she does! I don't believe you! Kim would never be as mean as you. That girl has no mean bones in her body and you're nothing but a skeleton full of meanness. It's much too late for the sweet talk. at least i tried. Uh-huh. You tried all right. yes i did, and ill shout it from the nearest flag pole....."from sea to shining sea", heehee! I do give you credit for going heavy on the sweetness. It's still not gonna work. what do you mean its still not goona work? but im giving it all i got....WARNING puppy dog pout coming, turn away quickly! Did the Bad Witch turn you into a puppy dog again? I told you to avoid her. Are you sure? Or did some of the spell spill on you to make you say that? what a question. of course im not sure. heehee! oh no!! what if it really spilled on me? april save me! Wait a minute. Why would you run to her to save you when she's the one who is messing with your mind? Ok I'll save you. The antidote is you have to sing Frankie another lullabye. Ohh, I like that suggestion. How about "Put the Blame on Mame"? I wonder if any other girls can sing that tune. is that cap of her leaning over his bed suppose to signify her "motherly" affection for smithy? i still dont believe that. heehee! Why, does it look as if Paula is being motherly in that shot? you remembered about that "beat about the bush" line? i thought you wouldnt have remembered that at all. thats too cute! Not bad for someone who hasn't even watched the film, eh? did you notice in this scene greer is sitting backwards in that chair? Now you don't think a guy would really take notice of such a thing, do you? -
That was a very informative read, Arturo. Excellent! You are very correct about Linda's transformation from the young good girl to the "mature" bad girl once she came of age. She was so very young when she arrived in Hollywood although you would never know it since she always looked "mature" for her age.

Hi, Miss Gun For Hire -- I think you will definitely like In A Lonely Place the most. After that, perhaps in this order: High Sierra, To Have and Have Not and finally, Dark Passage. High Sierra over To Have and Have Not? Very interesting. Is that because you think I'm going to fall for a certain lady? I hope you get around to seeing In A Lonely Place soon so you can talk about it....WHAT AM I SAYING???? I guess Scarlett's optimism got to me this morning. How could you say such a thing? I have a proven track record of... "talk" to you later. Smashing photos of the second best Miss Gun for Hire. Veronica's sad, sultry eyes always pull me in. She's a real sweetheart... unlike the best Miss Gun for Hire. Hey, Ollie T -- I'd vote that FrankG enjoys TO HAVE OR HAVE NOT as his favorite of this lot, at least initially. Bacall's dialog alone should guarantee more winks and chuckles, and if FrankG's anything of a Hoagy Carmichael fan, that film's music should have it run First Place. Your words about the dialogue and the songs are what really intrigues me about To Have and Have Not. What's up, ChiTOwen -- Surprisingly, MissG and I are not in 100% agreement on this. Surprisingly? More like, "thankfully" for your sake. Do you really want to align yourself with someone who actually believes Gone with the Wind is the greatest film of all time, Mr. Kane? My prediction: 5. TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT 4. HIGH SIERRA 3. DARK PASSAGE 2. IN A LONELY PLACE 1. GONE WITH THE WIND --"Frank(Grimes)ly Lauren, I don't (twitches head & shoulder, curls lip) give a (blows cigarette smoke into her face) hill of beans (walks into the night fog)." Bogie and Bacall in Gone with the Wind. I love it! Can't you just see Bogie putting up with Scarlett's antics? No? Me, either. So you actually believe I'm gonna like To Have and Have Not the least, eh? What's your basis? I'm very curious to hear. My expectation level goes as follows: 1. In a Lonely Place 2. To Have and Have Not 3. High Sierra 4. Dark Passage 5. Gone with the Wind By the way, do you think I'm gonna like Gone with the Wind?

Hi, Triple H -- I just thought too bad Hitchcock never directed Humphrey Bogart I wonder why I was trying to think of a Hitch film that would suit Bogie and I do believe one fits him perfectly and that's Notorious. Notorious is a Bogie-Bacall film to me. Here's some caps from Butterscotch's FAVORITE Cary Grant character:
-
Hola, ButtersapGreer -- I do not see one single Grant/Hitchcock film on your favorite list. How can you not like him in Suspicion? He's very sweet in that picture; the perfect husband. Ciao, Miss Dis -- I'm always amazed when you actually display good taste. Translation: DISagree with me. Sorry to "dis" you. I see you're finally catchin' up. Don't trip now, Tumbelina. I wouldn't want you to rip those stockings of yours, Lora Mae.
-
Hiya, Miss Goddess of Lists! -- Wolf whistle! That was a glorious run of Cary pics. Very nice. Top 10 Favorite Cary Grant Performances: I like grumpy Cary best. 1. Notorious 2. Only Angels Have Wings 3. Charade 4. The Philadelphia Story 5. To Catch a Thief 6. North by North West 7. Father Goose 8. Mr Lucky 9. Holiday 10. Penny Serenade I'm always amazed when you actually display good taste. Translation: agree with me. My favorite Cary roles are also the "grumpy ones." Let's just say that I like him verbally spanking his leading ladies. My Favorite Cary Grant performances to date: 1. Only Angels Have Wings 2. Notorious 3. His Girl Friday 4. Holiday 5. Suspicion 6. To Catch a Thief 7. North by Northwest 8. Charade 9. The Awful Truth 10. Crisis Hi, Gery! -- You never cease to amaze me. You always post the most interesting photos on the board. Like ChiO, I'm also unfamiliar with Lilian Harvey, but she's a pretty-looking lass.

Hiya, Jackie F! -- Frank- you are a doll! Oooohhhh, flattery! I'm a pushover for such tactics. You ain't too bad yourself, Dolly. Thanks, thanks, thanks! for the screen caps of Molly from My Man Godfrey. I just love her! I also love Molly. Do you know who my favorite character in My Man Godfrey is? It's actually Angelica Bullock (Alice Brady). She annoyed me right out of the gate but I quickly fell for her after that. I also love Cornelia Bullock (Gail Patrick). She's a smart alecky troublemaker after my heart. I liked Irene Bullock's (Carole Lombard) hyper-romanticism ( ) and love-crazy antics but I actually prefer Carole's "Mrs. Smith" (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) to Irene. Carole's emotional range is off the charts in Mr. and Mrs. Smith but she's more focused and lovable in My Man Godfrey. She's basically lovesick. Great line from the GREAT Thelma! .....pork chop..... I'm still laughing! Butterscotch, I'm borrowing your hee hee.... Thelma definitely qualifies as a doll. Hi, Whistling Gypsy -- Your comments yesterday about MY MAN GODFREY caused me to want to watch this old favorite again. Last night I pulled out my Criterion Collection dvd version and watched the film and now I have a question. I thought I remembered a scene in which Godfrey, after Cornellia puts the pearls in his room and before the police arrive, returns to his room and knows that something is wrong. He discovers what we already know because the dresser drawer is open and the bedspread is in disarray. Can any of you remember this scene or have I simply added this scene to explain what I think ?must have happened?? I actually just watched My Man Godfrey for the very first time this past week, so I'm not sure about the missing footage you speak of. FrankG: I agree with you that Jean Dixon has the best lines, but Eugene Pallette has a few good lines, too. His companion at the bar comments that the location of the scavenger hunt is rather like an insane asylum to which Pallette replies, ?The only thing you need for an insane asylum is an empty room and the right sort of people.? His companion then directs him to look at the woman arriving with a goat, "Look at her, she's my wife! I've been looking at her for twenty years." His companion apologizes profusely, saying that he is sorry, "You're sorry, how do you think I feel!" That was a terrific 30s interchange. Very snappy and very funny. I didn't think the film was all that funny at the outset but it picks up the pace rather quickly. It's a warm, brilliant screwball comedy. Ciao, Miss Goddess -- I think FrankGrimes would say we are a dangerous "trinity". "Dangerous" is one word, but it's certainly not the first one that comes to mind. One of my favorite housekeepers is Velma Cruther (Agnes Moorehead) in Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte. SERIOUS VISUAL SPOILERS

Hiya, Ski Bunny Greer! -- thats so funny...."beat around the bush"...when me and kim made that video, i wanted to look at her when she said that, but i didnt. i started saying that after i heard greer say it in Random Harvest. heehee! i pocked on her about it after the video was made though. You picked on poor Kim? How mean! "Samantha" was a good witch who misbehaved on occasion, so if you were to be a witch, you would be like Sam. wow! is that a compliment? ill take that as a compliment. heehee! It's a compliment because I said you're not a witch and if you were a witch you would be a good, sneaky witch. I still have a crush on Samantha, too, so you're in good company. It's much too late for the sweet talk. at least i tried. Uh-huh. You tried all right. yes i did, and ill shout it from the nearest flag pole....."from sea to shining sea", heehee! I do give you credit for going heavy on the sweetness. It's still not gonna work. Bonjour, Missy G -- Frank---Hermione told me the only "antidote" to her spell is if you POST your THOUGHTS about a movie you WATCHED. Ready to feel better? Who says I want an antidote? It looks like "Paula" is also a silly goose. -
Hi, Randy -- Frank you have great taste as always. That's a terrific compliment coming from a guy who has an eye for beautiful women. Linda's your #3 and my #2 but Arturo has us both beat as i believe Linda is his #1. Arturo is definitely the biggest Darnell fan on the board. P.S. -- I'm starting to fall for Gloria Grahame again. Here's hoping TCM is going to trot out In A Lonely Place. I have Macao on tape. I can watch that and drool over Gloria and Jane Russell. God bless tcm. Gloria is #4 for me and Grace Kelly is #5. I do like my blondes. Hiya, Miss Betty Idol -- Arturo, maybe Gene would have fitted the part better with her royal looks and the cold sting of her voice could have had Rex's charcater raking over the coals. But Linda was ravishing all the same. She proved her wide range with all those personality slips that she mastered to a T. I liked the movie so much because it was a game of the mind and how it can conspire to set you up for a fall. You are on fire! You continually paint just the right picture. Don't get me started on the glorious Gloria Grahame. She had an icy incandescence that could eat your heart out. Frank, you got yourself in a tight spot with all those beauties fighting for you. If only it were true. If only it were true. Hola, CineBaby -- I must see "Unfaithfully Yours." I've been a recent convert to Preston Sturgess It's a different kind of Sturges because the film is psychological and the humor is on the dark side. and Darnell is just about the most...most...ahh...The Most! The Mostest! In a Lonely Place Blood and Sand

Beeeeeautiful pictures, thank you! Melanie's the angel, she handled the situation perfectly. You don't think Scarlett's an angel? She's a sweet, lovely angel. Here's the sweet, lovely angel in tears after hearing the Goddess put her down. -
Well lookie there, Grace isn't icy in that photo. She's looking mighty warm and mighty fine. She's also wearing one of my favorite outfits in film history. I just love that little pink number. It's very tasty! Now here's my kinda girl: hands on hips in disgust! Now that's to die for.

Hi, Late Night Butterscotch! -- okay frankie i have always stayed away from Psycho, but i thought i would watch a little to se if i would really freak out, well guess what? I FREAKED OUT!! you would think a movie as old as this one is wouldnt be so terrifying, but it is , oh it is!! i screamed at the exact same time as the first woman he killed! so i had to change the channel. i was totally in a terror of fright! i cant watch any more of that movie and it was a total mistake to weatch just as much as i did. oy! Here I go to all the trouble of watching a sappy Greer film and you can't even make it through my favorite Hitchcock film. I feel as if I have been stabbed in the heart. you really need to see Pride and Prejudice frankie!!! greer and larry do the best jobs of performing my fav characters and their twoo wove is fantastic!! im puppy dog pouting! i mean how could you resist those pics of them!! But what if the film gets too sappy. I might have to turn it off then. what deprogramming? oh you mean the deprogramming of my mind, which you have set to fright? heehee! No, I'm talking about the deprogramming of my mind, which you have set to "neuter." what romance is there with jack the ripper? im sorry frankie, but i dont see that....i dont think you know what true romance is. april...bronxie...i think we all need to pull together and tell frankie what true romance is all about on the screen. What if the man you deeply love is, unbeknownst to you, Jack the Ripper? "Paula" took "Smithy" in from off the streets without knowing who he was. What if "Smithy" had been Jack the Ripper in the life he couldn't remember? Would "Paula" still have loved him so? Don't you think Random Harvest would be better this way? i strapped myself down and pinned my eyes open and watched Random Harvest and Gone with the Wind... ON THE SAME DAY. Ugh! we put you through such horrible phases darlin'. "life's tough...and then you die."....actually i hate that quote, and i have no idea where i got that from, but i remember it from somewhere. I just need to wash the horrible Random Harvest and Gone with the Wind taste out of my mouth with some psycho stuff. So you can use those arguments but I can't! That's not fair. Theresa-HopScotch--where are you? I need back-up. that ISNT fait frankie, you have to use much better arguments thatn that. and you say april cant use those ,but you stoop to using them? what ARE we to do with you? this is a sad day for you, but not for us! heehee! I was actually looking out for the psycho Goddess. She was lowering herself to my level by using my words and she certainly doesn't want to be on my level, trust me. I was merely protecting her like a gentleman would. they are very clean and no dirtiness, And that's a good thing? -

I think it was having to go to Queens which scared the guys. Oh, come on. If you are willing to brave it, I'm sure the guys would. I guess ol' Pappy just doesn't turn the guys on. Unless it's... I don't know what the heck that means...'splain please. Unless you're being provoking, in which case you can forget the explanation. Provoking! And since you told me to forget it, I won't. Now if Ford is not to blame for you going by yourself, maybe it's, uhhh, the icy blonde with icy shoulders that's the problem. So when are you going to see No Country for Old Men? Are any of them cute? I don't want to see a movie about OLD men. Especially old men getting blown into a million pieces. All of them are cute! I'm an expert on the topic, too. Now go see the romance film. The love explodes (into a million pieces) from the screen! -

Hey there, My Favorite Dictator, ChiO -- Please -- oh, please, Dear Creator -- don't let that be a Frank Grimes-list-in-order-of-my-preference list. Young Grasshammer, you must know that when it comes to Murnau, SUNRISE is first and THE LAST LAUGH is second; thereafter, the order does not matter. I'm afraid to say, my list be in order of preference. Nosferatu and Faust are the most entertaining of the Murnau films for me. It's the same for Lang with me. Metropolis is often cited as his silent masterpiece, but I prefer Dr. Mabuse:The Gambler and Spies for entertainment value. Hola, Miss Lonelyheart -- I may be going to see that "boring" movie tomorrow myself. Well that statement speaks volumes. You couldn't find one guy to take you to a Ford film? Not one? I guess ol' Pappy just doesn't turn the guys on. Unless it's... And a month later, The Stale Helmet. Variety is the spice of life. I couldn't agree with you more. So when are you going to see No Country for Old Men? It's a film about men, so you'll love it! -
Wonderful pics! I love seeing a soaking wet Grace! Although the poor little angel is chilly. Ahhhh, icy blondes. They warm my heart.

Ciao, Miss Violent Psycho Dame -- I cannot believe you are actually lowering yourself to my level. This is a very sad day for you. A very sad day. So you can use those arguments but I can't! That's not fair. Ohh you can use it, it's just that I'm stunned you'd actually pull up a chair next to me. That's the sad part for you. You've lost your way. Theresa-HopScotch--where are you? I need back-up. Now this is completely you, running and hiding behind a sweet, innocent girl. The next box I'm getting is, ummm, a crappy one. You mean a crappy, sappy Pappy one? Yay! What's the next crappy sappy movie you are going to watch in the mean time? How Boring Was My Pappy is next for me, but I have been saying that for two weeks now. -

Good Evening, Lady of the Night ( )! -- You said yourself that just because people like to "watch" violence doesn't necessarily mean they are violent, so THERE. I cannot believe you are actually lowering yourself to my level. This is a very sad day for you. A very sad day. To be honest, I can't really tell what's happening in those screencaps, they're so dark. Is that a seduction scene? I'll have to rent them (one day) to see for myself. Yes, it's a seduction scene brought on by a certain "fella." Did you know about the box set of "German Expressionism" coming out? Are you going to rush to the store to get it or do you already have most of the titles. I am aware of it thanks to J-Girl, who actually informed me of it a few weeks ago. I don't have any of the titles in the box, although my brother has two of the titles. I really want to see The Hands of Orlac and Secrets of a Soul. I've never seen either one of them. The box came out this past Tuesday, but I'm not going to get it for awhile. The next box I'm getting is, ummm, a crappy one. -

Hi, Miss Pot Calling the Kettle Psycho -- That's different! When they fight over me it's a delight. You're nothing but a LITTLE violent psycho who wants buckets of blood to be spilled all over the land in honor of your love. ALL GIRL. Lots! I've seen Sunrise and parts of Nosferatu and...and...and Sunrise. How many have YOU seen? He only did like 20 and I bet most of them are "lost". I have seen seven Murnau films: 1. Nosferatu 2. Faust 3. Sunrise 4. Tabu 5. The Last Laugh 6. Phantom 7. Tartuffe Tartuffe Faust -

"Samantha" was a good witch who misbehaved on occasion, so if you were to be a witch, you would be like Sam. It's much too late for the sweet talk. at least i tried. Uh-huh. You tried all right. She was a good girl. She's since been poisoned. If I can just get her away from you and the other awful "A" girl, she may once again be good. if you got me away from both of them, that would only leave kim, and then you are gonna pry her away from me, what next?! i'll be all alone in the world. I won't pry you away from the "beat around the bush" gal. She's still innocent, although she needs to be watched. -
