Hiya, Sandy K(atie) -- Maybe I should get my hubby to watch it with me on Valentine's Day. We are staying in--I bought some nice filet mignon to make for a special dinner.
Filet mignon, Casablanca, and a little romance equals a lovely Valentine's Day. I'm pretty sure you will like Casablanca. As much as the filet mignon? Maybe. The romance? No.
I'm still a Gone with the Wind virgin.

How did you determine that "Les Enchaines" referred to Notorious?
The Internet makes many of us appear to be smarter than we truly are.

Are you collecting all the foreign language versions of your favorite films too?
I'm not that diseased... yet.
-
Hey, BronxGirl -- I can't hear you -- transmission from Venus is very poor.
You can't hear me? Is it you who is ignoring me now? I don't like that.
I'm not sure there's a name for my planet. It's pretty much my own creation.
Hiya, CineBaby -- I also liked Bronxie's theory on Waldo Lydecker.
-
Did you say "C'est derrierre?"
Are you calling me what I think you are calling me? Harrumph!
Harrumph! Harrumph! So what exactly is the translation of "Les Enchaines"? I haven't a clue. Never took French.
That one threw me for a loop, too. It looks to mean "The Dissolved" or "The Dissolvers," but I don't know how it correlates with Notorious.

BEWARE: VISUAL SPOILERS AHEAD
Here are four of my very favorite endings:
Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch

Jacques Tourneur's Out of the Past

Howard Hawks' Only Angels Have Wings

Ernst Lubitsch's The Shop Around the Corner

-
Thanks, Konway! That shot does have a Citizen Kane-like look, although not as dark. The set design is also very similar.
-
I don't think L'Ombre d'un Doute and Les Enchaines are worthy of being placed in this thread. Or maybe some viewers of this thread aren't worthy.
Il me semble, ce dernier.

My answer is "yes." I used to post one or two requests a month and some of them were aired:
The Woman on the Beach
The Locket
Stranger on the Third Floor
The File on Thelma Jordon
I'm very grateful that each and every one of those films aired, too.
I haven't requested films for a few months, so I guess I need to get back to doing so. It's time for more Fritz Lang and film noir requests. Secret Beyond the Door...!

Hi, Miss Betty Idol! -- Thanks, Frank. I feel so at home among Gene fans. To tell you the truth I passed Gene by as the ivory tower out of reach beauty with an ''everyone drops at my feet'' act in ''Laura'', the perfect mantrap in which the victims walked blinfolded. Silly me I couldn't separate Gene from Laura and figure out how magnificently Gene managed to embody the wicked Laura. I keep covering myself with sackclothes and ashes for my foolishness. But ''The Ghost and Mrs Muir'' was enough to get me caught in the touching web of dreams and illusions that Lucy spins to make a life for herself. So different from the web of lies and manipulations she weaved in ''Leave Her to Heaven''. My light and clarity moment was long overdue.
I'm someone who loves femmes fatale and women who are emotionally unstable. Gene's performance in Leave Her to Heaven is one of my all-time favorites for this very reason and it's also why I love her in The Razor's Edge. I do enjoy her peformance as "Lucia" in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, too. I believe that performance shows her softer, loving side.
You're very correct about "Laura" being the perfect mantrap. That is the film where I fell into the Gene trap. I'm not looking to free myself, either.
And Miss Tierny's beauty is that striking that is almost hypnotic. Not even the sadness that sneaks into her eyes can break the spell.
Ooooh, I like that. I love Gene's eyes because they often tell a story with her.
Gene is the actress that I am drawn to the most in terms of beauty and performance. Barbara Stanwyck is my favorite actress in terms of performance and Grace Kelly is the actress that I find to be the most beautiful, but Gene is a mix of both for me. She's more beauty than performance, but I do like her acting ability.

I meant most men don't get interesting looking until 40...19th C. men like Peter Blood probably didn't even make it to 40 so they got that "seasoned" appeal early on. Of course, that may have something to do with the 19th C. women!
You seemed to shove the "seasoned" Cap'n off the plank mighty easily for the "boyish looking" Peter Blood.

Hi, Ollie -- I walked in for morning coffee and saw these scenes scrolling
across the walls, and HANGOVER of course got all the whistles and rhythmic
applause. Another great string of clips, Frank! Thanks a lot!
Thanks!
Am I so naive to believe that the coffee shop patrons would like to see pics of
classic beefcake and cheesecake splashed all over the wall versus classic
films? If that's the case, I think the Goddess could use her long, very sharp
claws to scratch that itch. She's got plenty of those pics.
Bonjour, Mademoiselle G -- THAT'S THE SCENE from RED RIVER I was
thinking about! You found it, that's great, Frank! I think it's classic how Dunston
immediately appeared as soon as someone was talking about him.
Bronxie's "coffee" quirk on somebody's "Western Gallery" thread sparked me.
Let me guess, you've posted that particular sequence from Hangover Square
at least three times on this board now, which means you've probably rewound
it and watched it about 800,000 times, non?

-
Let's see, yet ANOTHER John Ford poster and still ANOTHER Gary Cooper poster. Something is wrong here. I'm starting to believe that Kyle has been kidnapped by someone who likes both Ford and Cooper.
Those posters were merely okay, "Kyle".
-
Hey, Jackie F -- Frank- loved the INXS vid. They were a great band.
My one personality likes INXS and the era in which they were born. My other personality prefers something A LOT different.I knew you had a soft spot- including Audrey in that lineup of sultry nightclub singers. And in Breakfast at Tiffany's, one of the most romantic movies ever made!
I'm warning you, don't be fooled. I'm not a sentimental guy at all. I only care about sultry nightclub singers. Once ButterscotchGreer shows up on the board, she'll set the record straight. She knows my musical tastes better than anyone around here. Well, her and MetsFan. J-Girl knows my other side better.
Personally, I think she should have run off with Cat and skipped yucky George Peppard.
I completely agree!
Man, you girls are very tough on the guys.
Hi, Miss Goddess -- AIR SUPPLY!!!!! Yay!!! Someone else with GREAT taste! I love Air Supply, I could listen to them all day.
I must be caught in some sort of weird universe because I've never heard of Air Supply being linked with "GREAT taste."
Olivia really does have an extraordinary voice
What voice? I never noticed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IME0Ch7WAF0
Well, I was afraid to click on your favorite song links at first because of your notorious tastes, but thank heavens there was nothing more shocking than Olivia Newton John or INXS
Do my "notorious" tastes scare you so? I'm sorry to have let you down.
Well, I better start living up to my rep with you. So if you want a good scare, click on these links:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAemUyarBE4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb08bh-aHz4
(you like Aussies, don't you?).
A little bit.
I still haven't seen Hangover Square and I still can't believe those shots made it into the movie.
Ohhh, come on. That's clean, innocent fun.
Somehow those lyrics to Marlene's and Veronica's songs seem naughtier when you read them than when you listen to them in the movie! They seem to have a double meaning I didn't catch before. No wonder Coop found his way to her dressing room so quickly.
Marlene's song is definitely naughty. She's selling apples for a reason, ya know. I don't think Veronica's song is naughty at all. She's only singing about the game of love. "No, yes, no, yes... no!" Girls are serious teases. Guys, on the other hand, are not.

-
Good Evening, Miss G (
) -- Thanks for the cameos! You're very welcome. I'll try to post some more when I get some time.
Those Vanity Fair pictures are so funny to me.
I thought they were nicely done. I really liked Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson (
), Naomi Watts, and Renee Zellweger's photos. Seth Rogen's was funny.Hey, Konway -- I couldn't access the links for Waltzes from Vienna. That's one of the other Hitch films I've yet to see.
-
Hola, Missy G -- After seeing that picture of Peter Blood, you can HAVE Rex!
This is very consistent of you, Miss Contradiction. Peter Blood is surely looking very manly and 40-ish in that photo.
I love Rear Window, and along with To Catch a Thief and Rebecca, it's the one I've seen the most. It reminds of when I lived in L.A. Not at all of living here in NY, which is where it's set. I had an apartment once that had bamboo shades just like Jeff's and it was a courtyard apartment, too. Nobody got murdered, though, worse luck. It was pretty boring.
Boring? You must be speaking of the apartment courtyard and not the inside of your apartment.

She's a dancer and I can tell you no good can come of that.
Why, are dancers no good? I guess you would know.
Hee!! My "weird landlady" was in London. I'm trying to think of her cinematic equivalent. I know there must be one---but, you see, I just don't watch those kinds of movies.
You need some culture. Sociopaths are wondrous.
Hiya, Bronxie -- Well, a male ghost can do all the necessary stuff: taking out the garbage, giving a back or foot massage, killing the bugs...
Wait, I think I forgot something.....
Well, that too, but.....
Making me coffee wearing an apron.
I won't discuss what a female ghost can do.Now I can undress in my bedroom and hope a voice tells me I shouldn't be ashamed of my figure.
Who's cheating on who? Duane's in trouble.
I want Lisa's Marc Cross overnight bag. It's a classic; I'll bet they're still being made.
Okay, you can have that. I'll take Lisa Carol Fremont. What a gal!

I guess Miss Torso's name is "Emma."
-
Hiya, Jackie F! -- Not sentimental? After those ooey-gooey You Tube presentations you just played for us? Come on.
Don't be fooled. My favorite films feature psychos.
This one's for you, FrankieG:
That song seems quite familiar to me, although it's way too sentimental for me. Here's something a lot stronger:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lE6Htee0sA
Caution: this one is dripping in blood... or is it butterscotch?

Favorite groups? Here's one:
Linda in Hangover Square

Marlene in Morocco

Veronica in This Gun for Hire

Rita in Gilda

Audrey in Breakfast at Tiffany's

Howard Hawks' Red River

So does your coffee shop have dancing girls, Ollie? I guess it may if you can get
Miss Goddess and others to post some pics for you.
Hangover Square

Hi, Smart-Mouthin' Kylefornia -- Lewton. Lang. Murnau. Noir.
Boy, I am glad they put names on these posts or I would never had known that FrankGrimes suggested these!

Such great taste must equal me, right, Kyle?
Actually, I have two Box Sets you suggest on the short list of potential buys already - Hitchcock and Sturges. If anything, owning those two sets would free up a lot of space on the VHS shelves. (But isn't it odd that North By Northwest in the Masterpiece Boxset?)
North by Northwest is in the Alfred Hitchcock: The Signature Collection (Warner box).
I love the Masterpiece Collection. It's well worth it.
I have two of the three major Bogie boxes (Bogie & Bacall: The Signature Collection and Humphrey Bogart: The Signature Collection, Volume 1). They are most definitely worth having.
The John Wayne/John Ford Film Collection may be the next box set I get.
Do you have "The Movies Begin" DVD?
I was trying to find some collections of musical shorts but they are difficult to locate without an exact title to search for. I think I did see a Paramount (?) set of musical shorts - all jazz bands, I think. Anyone know if it is interesting?
Is it "Hollywood Rhythm Volume 1: The Best of Jazz & Blues"?

Love That Bronxgirl! -- Re: "Earth to Frank" -- I WILL NOT BE IGNORED!!!! LOL
I did just remove you from my "Ignore List."

I'd never look to ignore you, Barb. No way. It would be my severe loss if I did.
Your bunnies are safe, don't worry. (speaking of which, I'm SO EXCITED that Stuart Whitman and NIGHT OF THE LEPUS is coming in March)
I definitely checked out your "bunnies" thread and I watched the trailer for Night of the Lepus. That's the kind of schlock I can usually go for.
The only icy female on these boards is Mary Meredith. But she's dead.
I beg to differ.
By the way, you should know that I like Mary Meredith. Do you remember who the model was for her portrait?
For those remarks about THE GRAPES OF WRATH, Pappy, me, and perhaps a certain goddess will be coming after you and we WON'T be asking like John Qualen "Just who DO we shoot?"
I've been dodging bullets from Dangerous Di and she knows how to fire a garter gun with the best of 'em. I'm not worried about the Goddess because she can't shoot straight and she's too busy to aim anyways. You worry me because you "possess" a voodoo doll of me. That could prove to be tricky for me.Hey -- Slim Pickens is in CROSSING DELANCEY! No, he's really not. Amy Irving is tired....oh so tired....(at the beginning) of Peter Riegert the Pickle Man.
Let's face it, she's tired!
I can just picture Slim Pickens as Sam Posner.
Duane and I have already had our "coffee", RED RIVER style, if you get my meaning.
What, just a cup?
I'm gonna post some Red River caps on the "Coffee" thread.

-
I'd get the Ford at Fox box set since it's the most costly DVD I'd be interested in getting. I would have to reach into my own pocket to cover the cost, but it would be worth it.
If not the Ford at Fox set, I would do as Dangerous Di suggested, spend it on Criterion titles. I'm also a box set freak, so I'd consider getting some boxes that I'm interested in.
My personal favorite DVDs are:
Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection
The Val Lewton Horror Collection
Film Noir Classic Collection
The F.W. Murnau Collection
Fritz Lang Epic Collection
Preston Sturges: The Filmmaker Collection
The Cary Grant Box Set
I also have Criterion's "Wrong Men and Notorious Women" DVD, but it's OOP.

Howdy, Bronx Blossom! -- Sometimes when I squint in the mirror, I see Jane Russell. Other times, when I haven't gotten enough sleep or I've eaten too many hamburgers and french fries, I see another Jane --- Darwell.
Hamburgers and french fries works for me.You surely do look mighty fine in cowgirl boots and spurs, Bronxie. I didn't think a horror/sci-fi chick could pull such a look off, but you are doing so in such grand fashion.
(although she did look radiant in the mirror holding those earrings up in that ruefully beautiful scene from THE GRAPES OF WRATH)
I haven't seen this film but I do remember seeing some clips from it. I believe it stars Gary Cooper and it's directed by a second-rate hack. Am I right?
I actually have a backstory for Mrs. Iselin. She grew up amid wealth and privilege but all the males surrounding her, starting with her father, were overbearing and downight cruel, possibly even abusive. She associated that treatment with the upper classes and materialism, so she becomes a radical and joins the Communist party. You can tell how much she despises and looks down on all men -- she treats them with contempt and condescension: Raymond and her idiot husband are "my two little boys".
Oohhh, I like that. You're a very imaginative woman, B. Quite stimulating.
So do you treat men with contempt and condescension or do you only treat me this way? Don't worry, I'm VERY used to such treatment. I'm becoming an expert on icy shoulders.
Don't worry about replying. (although I did post "Earth to Frank!" on one thread when I didn't hear from him in a week but that's just because I love to TORMENT HIM)
Right, FG?
And you changed that post! But I caught you. I just cannot believe you would actually miss me in a week's time. Miss G PINES for such a week.
You're not the only one who loves to torment me around here. You just happen to be the one I actually like. That's why I'm a Bronxgirl slave.
You are a sweetheart, Miss G.
Whoa there, Tex! It looks as if you've had far too many. You're gonna have to sleep that delusional talk off in the cell.
By the way, is it me or did Crossing Delancey just get mentioned? What in the wide, wide world of sports is a goin' on here?
I'll put that photo on my refrigerator door so I won't be tempted to eat rigatoni and garlic bread this weekend.
But that's some of my Dobie's favorite foodstuffs, so I can rope him in through his stomach.
You better not use the icy shoulder recipe because Duane has been showing signs of restlessness:

-
Hi, Broadway Butterscotch -- What's the sad face for? Is it for my lack of culture and my poor taste in music?
im really giggling. you dont have lack of culture frankie.....and you dont have, well you dont have lack of culture. heehee!
My lack of culture greatly outshines my poor taste in music.
im shaking in my booties. heehee!
Manhattan blizzards will do that to you.
i dont live in Manhatten silly, april does. i done live down here in texas cowboy. heehee!
Manhattan blizzards are far-reaching, Cowgirl.
well theres no way you would fall asleep to your choice of music.
at least youre honest.See, you know what music I like.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXyX45A0Alk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEWswHtQUkc
She can't outrun you. Besides, she doesn't need to run because she's got claws.
i bet she could outrun me. i dont run very fast. my body wasnt made for that kind of athletics.
Ohhh no, she couldn't. She's in either high heels, slippers, or enpointes. You've got her.
tell me you didnt like that cutre little song, granted it isnt the kind you listen to, but still, didnt you like it the slightest bit? its like hearing veronica lake or rita hayworth sing one of their nightclub songs, except this one isnt in a nightclub. its in a canteen. or is that the reason?
I would definitely watch Greer sing in a canteen.
But, yes, I do prefer Veronica and Rita in a nightclub. I did like the "cute little song." Greer is quite enchanting and very warm and sweet at that part of Random Harvest.yeah. yeah thats just what i was thinking. honestly! where was wiliam holden in the movie, i must have missed that.....especially grace kelly. i dont recall seeing a blonde in there to make it an indecorous movie. heehee!
Grace is never indecorous. She's decorative:
Bonjour, Mrs. Sinatra -- I know your tastes need elevating. I'm sending you and ChiO to Finishing School.
Now why would I want to go to a Finishing School? Ohh, right, that's where all the bad girls are.
And tell the truth, you have "Lara's Theme" playing on your Ipod all the time....
Oh, sure.
I actually had to YouTube the song because I wasn't sure what it sounded like. I have at least heard it before.
"Bennie"? You can't even spell. His name is Bernard so isn't the proper short form Bernie or Barney? As in P. Fife?
I'll let Hitch know he's improperly calling Bennie, "Bennie." By the way, he also believes you're full of crocodile tears.
At least you posted some nice pictures.
"At Least" is something you say to me A LOT. I must wear it well.

Psycho wasn't No. 1 on your list?
Only in my bleeding heart.
You must have been in a sentimental mood when you wrote your list.
Me? Sentimental? Never! I'm the guy who likes gallons of blood, decapitations, and ugly noirs. There's absolutely no possible way I can be sentimental. None. Once again, you must have me confused with someone else. You must know A LOT of Franks.
Hiya, Mrs. George Sanders (husband #6?) --

Mr. Grimes, I am amazed that these two romantic movies made your list! Although they are my dream team movie scores, I really can't picture you kickin' back, with your hanky in hand and sobbing like a baby, like I do!
Finally! A perceptive woman! Now could you please inform the other two that I'm not sentimental?
-
Yo, Fordy Guns -- You got the JF/JW set?
No, ma'am. I may in time.
The Horse Soldiers is one of a handful of westerns that keeps growing and growing in my estimation, like Winchester '73 and Westward the Women.
My hopes aren't very high for The Horse Soldiers, which is a very good thing.
For someone who thinks Pappy is Sappy you sure are amassing quite a collection of his movies!
I didn't say Pappy is sappy. I said he was crappy.
I have 48 Hitchcock films on DVD and the next two directors for me are Fritz Lang (15 DVDs) and Anthony Mann (14 DVDs). Ohhh, wait, the director I have the second most DVDs from is Jackie Frod. I have 16 DVDs of his.You ladies won't need anything to warm you up at High Noon because Grace will provide all the heat.
I couldn't have said it any better myself. You sure do have wonderful taste, Miss.
Ha ha! I can't believe you won't make fans of them in time. Just look how well we've done with FrankGrimes. He now gets weak in the knees at the mere mention of Gary Cooper!
Huh? Now where have you read such a thing? It couldn't be the "Cooper" thread because I don't talk about his films there.

He likes Gladiator? Then he also goes for blood, gore and decapitations just like FrankGrimes and we converted him. It might be possible. lol
"We converted him"? Taking credit for something that hasn't happened. Yeah, that sounds like you, Miss Gone with the Wind.
You did get something right with me, though. I do love gallons of blood being spilled all over the place.
As sure as I know how to spell A-r-s-o-n-i-s-t.

Hush... Hush, Sweet Tea -- i know, thats why i said it, Charles Demar. heehee! you still have short term memory loss.
That's from all the snow I've sniffed.
hush? did you just tell me to hush? im hurt, i have a tear frankie. heehee!
Dry your eyes.
grace.....better than greer......thats a good one! im laughing right now. its sad, b/cx usually me and angie fast forward through grace on High Noon, but the big screen doesnt have a remote control to mute her out or fast forward through her. oh no!! heehee!
How dare you fast-forward past Grace! That's blasphemous! Grace is a sweet and lovely little angel. You'll see just how sweet and lovely Grace is on the big screen.
april is right frankie, for a guy who doesnt like those kinds of movies, you sure do like 'em?
I haven't watched any of those films, you know that.
it was hard enough getting mister frankie grimsey to like any gary films in the first place. heehee!
I can't help it that Coop lucked into some decent films. It wasn't his doing, I assure you.

how do you shoot a gun? its when you wave it around in the air? heehee! what riffraffs? i must be close to blind here.

-
Hey, Webestang -- Don't worry Frank.....I'm about as far away from being
a Norman Bates as you can get...LOL
That's okay, there are a couple people on this board who would tell you I'm the
psycho with multiple personalities.
Hi, Bargar -- Frank, for some reason, the rest of my post did not post.
Webestang as Norman, etc. and then I said the only thing have in common with
Mrs. Bates is I like rocking chairs. Hope this makes it.
I'm also someone who likes rocking chairs. The Trouble With Missy G -- You're in Alfred's Salon where we give lessons
in the art of makeup and how to become a "new woman" in the blink of an eye:
Oh, is that where we're at? I sure could use some lessons on the art of "new women."
Here's the Hitch Vanity Fair stuff for you, Girl:

Kyle In Hollywood's CENSORED Poster Gallery
in Remembering Kyle in Hollywood
Posted
That was very apropos, Kyle. I'm sorry to learn of Mr. Alvin's but I'm glad to learn of his name. I thank you for that.
I've become a great admirer of posterwork since I have found classic film and this board and your thread have greatly enhanced my appreciation of such art. It's why I often thank you for the thread.
And, to be honest, I'm far more familiar with Mel Brooks and E.T. than classic film, but that has been changing in recent years.
