*ha.. you may be right. And maybe the law of nature will still fall in place for us. Because If you DO hate it.. I can still say I disagree with you.. because the best thing I can say about that movie is.. I DON"T hate it. HA. * Oh, you're not that crazy about it? Hmmmmmmm... This is getting curiouser and curiouser. *Don't I know it! And I've got the worn out ropes and hat pins to prove it! * I'm always resisting arrest!
-
*You must be drunk.* Was that a bullet that just whizzed by me?

Doberman is nothing but lovable. He's a big kid. -
*Ro is my witness, I never claimed to have seen* *Bridge Over the River Kwai!* Ha! You've "seen" everything! *Yes, better tell Frank there's a blonde bathing beauty in this movie or he won't last.* Why didn't you tell me you were in the film?!
-
*But Frank, you're just a sweetpea, aren't you? You wouldn't hurt a fly.* That's right! Would you like a sandwich and a shower? *Johnnie frightens me too, but Cary looks so boyishly handsome in SUSPICION I just can't help it.* Oh, Lina. *I wouldn't go so far as to drink that glass of milk, however.* But a sandwich and a shower are okay, right? *It's funny, my closest girlfriend is tough and judgemental, she'll always tell it like it is with me, but in men, those traits are red flags and always send me running far, far away.* Poor Dev. He's only extremely jealous and desiring a good girl. *I know exactly what you mean about Loretta (so lovely in A MAN'S CASTLE) but she still has some luminous charm in the '40's. It's the '50's where she starts (along with Joan Crawford) to look and act a bit Kabuki-ish.* *Interesting that you mention Peanuts, because those characters are just as reflective and sophisticated as the leads on the ice in these movies, lol.* You're bad! *I should add that Cary as Dudley in THE BISHOP'S WIFE is a bit like Johnnie in some respects -- you can't immediately tell if he's benign or not. Cary's line readings in TBW are very interesting, especially when he's relating a Biblical story to David and Loretta's daughter.* Biblical stories? Oh, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! *So you don't even like Joey Bishop?* Who's that?
-
*I predict you will LOVE the movie.. because of that whole "law of nature" thing. (ha)* If I love a film like *The Bishop's Wife*, that will be a major shocker. The law of nature may not be able to handle that. *As a general rule, you are likely right. But I do like some of his other "smoother" characters. (North by Northwest, and Notorious) Still.. they are not so "playboy" so I guess that is why I like them.* "Devlin" is definitely not a playboy. He's very serious. *I don't know.. I saw him as very flawed.. but he was a "real" sort of guy. Not all "smooth talking and pretty" ha.* He's flawed, but he's still a strong leader. *He was a bit tougher in this one that pretty, that is for sure. I do like him in a lot of his comedies.. I think MAYBE his Mortimer (from Arsenic and Old Lace) would come in a very (very) close second to his Geoff Carter character.* Cary is supposedly a playboy in that one, but we never see that. He's mostly slap-happy in that one. *HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So very NOT!! Don't GET me started on that HAT again. (you really are bucking for a fight, aint ya???) * Always!
-
*Ummm yeah.. with bullets.. * That sounds like Miss G!
-
*I'm trying to watch most of it this time. I missed the first hour but I think I saw that part already.* So that's how you've "seen" all these movies!

15,000 posts?! Now that's impressive. Keep it going! Duane seems pleased: -
*There's a few women.. but they are busy!!!* Seducing the men? Please tell me they're busy seducing the men! *(did I mention this is WAR??) * I only like the battle of the sexes!
-
*Ha.. well. it MAY surprise you that it really has nothing to do with the MOVIE. ha.* Oh, really? Now I'm lost! *(here's a hint.. I am shocked.. SHOCKED, that you and I have the same fave Cary character. Because I like him best in OHAW too, and it goes against almost every known law of nature that we would actually both LIKE the same thing!) ;-)* That really is shocking and against the law of nature! You're right! But I'm guessing he's your favorite because you don't like the "charmers." You don't trust them. You see them as being takers and users. Geoff Carter is a strong leader, the kind of guy you like. Grant rarely played such characters. But the real reason is the hat.
-
*This is no NOIR.. this is WAR.. (not a game of cricket!!) * Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! That means no women!
-
*Thanks, Frank. You notice I don't have NOTORIOUS. It's just that Dev scares me, even more than Claude's mother, lol.* And you've got Johnnie Aysgarth on your list! I guess he's a friendly scamp. Dev is very tough and judgmental. He's like me. *I'm not sure how you'll react to THE BISHOP'S WIFE. It's a charming "Christmas" movie, with the delicious conceit of this tall, dark and handsome actor playing an angel, having all the earthly women drawn to him just because he's, well, Cary Grant, lol.* The word "Bishop" scares me. *Basically it all comes down to how you feel about Loretta Young. This is the role that opened my eyes to her as an actress of uncommon naturalness, despite her so-called "glamour" image.* I like her in the 30s, but I'm not sure about the 40s, yet. *The movie includes that late '40's post-war screen symbol of urban-romantic-humanistic-sociological community -- the skating rink. (THE FARMER'S DAUGHTER, PORTRAIT OF JENNIE...)* That was funny! I always think of the Peanuts with the rink.
-
*YO! Grey Dude.. your movie is on right now.. Be happy in your work! (And I ain't just whistling Dixie!!) * Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Where's the alleys with shadows?! The femmes fatale?!
-
*My prediction.. ha.. for what it is worth.. yes! (Would you like to know why???????????????) HA.* No! You've piqued my interest! Now I need to find out why you'll think I'll like it.
-
* It's one of my favorite movies! I know it is, Reggie. It's a good one. Unlike *Gone with the Wind* ! *I hadn't seen it in over a year or two.* Really? That's a while for you. You're coming around!
-
*I love his character in* *Charade, it's the last really good one he played. He and Audrey are charming together. I just got through watching it for the 200th time.* 200?! And I still haven't watched the Criterion DVD I bought about four years ago.
-
Good evening to you, Movieman -- *It's charming. It's sweet. Of course, it's fantasy so some may stretch your belief. There is a nice twist to it. Niven and Grant are fun, especially Niven. If you don't buy into Grant being an angel it is pointless.* *It's a family favorite.* A sweet and charming family favorite? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I'll have to give it a viewing.
-
Terrific list, Bronxie! I still have to see *The Bishop's Wife*. I wonder if I'll like it.
-
*I didn't know you liked him in* *Charade that much.* Oh, definitely. He's deceptive! I need to watch the film again. It's been a while.
-
That's a really good list of Cary characters, Miss G. My favorites are fairly similar: 1. *Geoff Carter* (Only Angels Have Wings) 2. *T.R. Devlin* (Notorious) 3. *Johnny Case* (Holiday) 4. *Walter Burns* (His Girl Friday) 5. *Joe Adams/Joe Bascopolous* (Mr. Lucky) 6. *John Robie* (To Catch a Thief) 7. *Peter Joshua* (Charade) 8. *Jerry Warriner* (The Awful Truth) 9. *Roger O. Thornhill* (North by Northwest) 10. *Johnnie Aysgarth* (Suspicion) 11. *C.K. Dexter Haven* (The Philadelphia Story) 12. *Nickie Ferrante* (An Affair to Remember) 13. *Philip Adams* (Indiscreet) 14. *Sgt. Archibald Cutter* (Gunga Din) 15. *Leopold Dilg/Joseph* (The Talk of the Town)

Howdy, Cowboy Chris -- *It's a bit ironic when you mention Duke and spankings because I think one of his more gentle moments (and there were plenty) is when in "McLintock" he takes his daughter and talks to her about her future.* Something tells me you've had some of these discussions, G.W.. *Over at the other playground someone talked about Wayne and what a sensitive performance he gave in "The Long Voyage Home."* That's definitely one of his sensitive ones. He's very "quiet" in that one. I love his sensitivity in *Rio Bravo*. *Miss Kitty's hairstyle was fine in the 50s but by the mid 60s it had elevated considerably, Big hair is not always great hair.* ** And then we get to the 80s!
-
*But I bet you like Ellie Mae.* She's cute, but I really wasn't hot for her. The show just never kept my interest. Now Petticoat Junction, that's a different story. *I see what you mean but it somehow bothers me that you put these two in a sentence together. One is a good hearted tv show, and the other is the highest art.* I was only comparing the leads being little girls and the stories being about family. I think both are very well done. *But you'll overlook that because of his "way."* *You bet! oh, my, John Hodiak.* Hodiak is definitely the "dark" kind of guy you go for. I'm not that big on Hodiak. He usually bothers me.
-
*most of the ones from the 80s.* Don't you mean the late-70s? So you watched *Halloween* and *Friday the 13th* with your dad? *I'm not sure luck had anything to do with it. * You're right about that! *I chose to come I didn't choose to stay!* We need to get you to the French Riviera, Francie. *I think it was several wigs!* It sure seems like it! *I do agree with you. I keep forgetting he killed a woman. :DAnd I keep forgetting Harry didn't. * Of course you do! And didn't he slap the victim in front of Anne? That's what sent her fleeing, right? He at least chewed her out. *Arnelo saw Anne not only as prize to possess---which he certainly did---but also as a person. He saw what her husband, George Murphy, didn't.* That can happen a lot in life. Once you get comfortable in a marriage or relationship, you can take things for granted. This makes it easy for an outsider to woo. *We never see Harry viewing Mary as a woman, not once. He's either using her or feeling guilt, but neither of those are attractive to me.* It's true, he's stuck on trying to be somebody. It's the most important thing to him. *Also we have the problem of George Murphy. He's automatically a nose-dive compared to Hodiak. He's in the Max Showalter (Niagara) category of annoying husbands.* And what about Adam (Hugh Marlowe) in *Night and the City* ? He's the good guy in Mary's life. He'll do absolutely anything for her. But you don't go for him. It's all about the kind of man. *Not likable, that was a wrong word, I mean Basehart never makes him seem as invincible and superior as he apparently thinks he is. He's like what Jackie says about Liberty Valance, you see the hurt child behind the psycho.* Oh, I see what you mean. I like Basehart but I always think he's very cold.
-
*My father used to take me to lots of "boys" movies, particularly scary ones and of course, these.* Scary ones? Really? Which ones? It is funny how today's parents are extremely overprotective with stuff when our parents didn't really give a hoot. *I don't think he liked westerns, though. His intellectual snobbishness wouldn't permit it. I'm sure he hated John Wayne. His favorites were Woody Allen and Alan Alda.* Actually, I was where he was before I actually watched John Wayne. What I learned is people take what they want out of the Duke's films. Those who are looking for him to be an American hero who puts the bad guys in their place get what they want out of his films, but I also get what I want. I love the Duke's "soft touch" the very most. He's one of the warmest and funniest of actors that I've seen. He's also terrific with women. Spankings! *No, one of their directors, Roger Vadim (you've seen two of his movies). BB wasn't really into money men. This director also had a child by Catherine Deneuve and has said Jane was the love of his life. You might say he had a pattern...* Catherine, too?! What a lucky guy! *Well, I wouldn't choose New York City, period!* You already did! *I don't like it either, it's crazy. I think it inspired Miss Kitty's later style.* I like Miss Kitty's style, but Marlene looks silly. Was it a wig? *No, I meant you like Harry so why not poor John Hodiak. I definitely liked Hodiak's character more.* Harry is trying to start a business while we already see Arnelo (John Hodiak) as a successful underworld man. He's playing more of the "Kristo" (Herbert Lom) part. If you saw the successful guys climbing the ladder, you may think differently about them. But the truth is, it's about each man's "way." Harry is a poor weasel who steals from his girlfriend. What woman is going to like that guy? Arnelo is a rich man wooing a woman. Of course, he smacks another woman around and then kills her. What a man! But you'll overlook that because of his "way." *I vaguely remember, and I think it was that as I saw more of Basehart's performance the early scene began to lose impact and be replaced by a little sympathy, but very little, not like with Hodiak for instance.* I actually didn't find him likable at all. I liked his doggie, though.
