  1. *How I think you will rank the films you've seen:* Thank you for doing that. I really like it when you guess me. It's fun. *I've placed Streetcar second, but to the side - because I think you would either hate it, or admire it greatly. It's not the kind of movie one loves, I think, but one has to respect it. I suspect that you might have hated it.... because you are a chivalrous person, I think it would be harder for you to watch than most any other movie, seeing a sensitive person destroyed.* I won't tip my hand in case someone else wants to guess me. But I love your thinking. I think it's wonderful. *How I rank the films you've seen:* *A Star Is Born (1937)* So it tops your list, eh? That's very interesting. *Flesh and the Devil A Streetcar Named Desire* Those may be interesting discussions. *Pat and Mike* I completely thought of you while watching the film... and I was smiling a lot because of that. *Angels with Dirty Faces* I can definitely see this one being one you like. *Frisco Jenny* You told me you really liked this one, and I feel this one screams "you." *The Long, Hot Summer* Now this is a big surprise to me. I would have not guessed you liking this one. *Shall We Dance* I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on this with in correlation with other Fred & Ginger flicks. *The Passionate Friends* I can see where you could be torn with this one. *Night Nurse* Now this is another big surprise for me. I didn't think this one would rank so low. *Warlock* Yeah, I can see you not liking this one as much. I'm guessing it's the peformers. *Picnic at Hanging Rock* I think you would be fascinated by this one. *Seven Sinners* And I feel this is a must-watch for you because it's loaded with some of your favorite character actors and they all shine. It's Marlene's film, but it's truly the character actors' film. *The Ace of Hearts* You may find this one appealing, too. *I've placed Streetcar very high on my list but to the side as well - since it's a very hard watch. It's brilliant, and Vivien is amazing. It completely changed me when I saw it the first time. But I can't call it a favorite, I can't go there too often.* I agree. It's not an easy watch, especially after you've seen it once.
  2. *My goodness, what an interesting group of films. There are several I really like this time, and a few I never heard of.* Really? I thought it would be a "lesser" list for you. I did know some were favorites of yours because that's why I watched them. *These three I never heard of so I'm leaving them off the list:* *The Ace of Hearts* *Before I Hang* *Secrets of a Soul* Lon Chaney, Boris Karloff, and German Expressionism. *12. Angels with Dirty Faces (9)* So you rank a gangster film rather highly. That's interesting. *5. The Kiss Before the Mirror (13)* And you said you liked this one! *15. Night Nurse (12)* You must like seeing your Clark being really bad. *3. Party Girl (11)* That surprises me, Party Girl. *7. Pat and Mike (19)* That doesn't surprise me! *21. Penelope (4)* You and your jewels! *9. Seven Sinners (1)* Numero uno! Wow! *18. A Star Is Born (1937) (20)* Do you like any of the incarnations? *8. A Streetcar Named Desire (3)* You like it but it's a tough watch? *19. The Winning of Barbara Worth (21)* I thought you wanted this one played on TCM!
  3. *You have a leg up on me, I have never seen Ace of Hearts. In fact, you are far surpassing me in terms of the sheer number and variety of films you have seen.* Maybe lately, but I'm late to the party. I'm still playing catch-up. I've got a lot to see. *I'll see if I can get your top and bottom five movies rated, and maybe I can spend some time listing how I like the films. There are some here I haven't seen, and several I haven't seen in a long time.* I'm more interested in how you like the films, but anything you come up with will be great.
  4. *What a crazy group of films!* I try! I do like mixing it all up. And I try to watch favorites of others. *I don't think I could possibly rate them the way you might.* *I haven't the slightest idea how you might like them.* It's hard to rank that many films. But if you want to guess my top five and bottom five, that would be all right with me. But I'd love to know what you've seen and how you liked them. *I'm taking a wild guess that Secrets of a Soul came in first? But I really have no idea.* Well, it is definitely German Expressionism. That does give it a leg up. *Clue me in on what Ace of Hearts is...I can only find a 1921 version and a 2008 version.* It's the Lon Chaney silent from 1921. I've been trying to watch some Chaney and I wanted to watch the films in the TCM collection.
  5. I've watched many more films and I'd love to know how others rank and view these films. And if you care to guess how I liked them, go right ahead. The Ace of Hearts Angels with Dirty Faces Before I Hang The Bribe Comanche Station Desire Me Flesh and the Devil Frisco Jenny The Kiss Before the Mirror Life Begins at Forty The Long, Hot Summer A Night in Casablanca Night Nurse Party Girl The Passionate Friends Pat and Mike Penelope Picnic at Hanging Rock Secrets of a Soul Seven Sinners Shall We Dance A Star Is Born (1937) A Streetcar Named Desire Warlock The Winning of Barbara Worth
  6. I'm too stubborn to watch it on YouTube! I'm off to sleep, Quiet Gal. Good night to you.
  7. *So what movie is Burl Ives a villain? Are you thinking of* *The Big Country I guess?* Yes, *The Big Country* and also *Day of the Outlaw*. He plays similar characters, actually. *How could I have forgotten Peter Lorre.* I usually feel sorry for Peter when he's a villain, despite his slime. *Another I should have included is Laurence Tierney.* He's truly frightening!
  8. My favorite actors as villains: 1. Robert Mitchum 2. Robert Ryan 3. Dan Duryea 4. Boris Karloff 5. Lee Marvin 6. Richard Boone 7. Peter Lorre 8. Charles McGraw 9. Orson Welles 10. George Sanders 11. Raymond Burr 12. Humphrey Bogart 13. Laird Cregar 14. Thomas Gomez 15. Burl Ives
  9. *Good, you'll finally watch it. * You're awful! Okay, you're right, he goes after her and takes even bigger risks. But she also takes big risks to meet him.
  10. *If you want to see it that way, but there's no way she was chasing Roy. He chose to go to the ballet instead of to a colonel's dinner so he chose love over his career.* Oh, he was definitely interested in her, too. They both took major chances to be with each other.
  11. *Mostly he's known for either Holmes or villains.* And isn't Ray Milland mostly a lead/love interest?
  12. *She did go to dinner with Roy but she wasn't sacked for that. And Roy asked her to dinner, she didn't chase him.* But she gives up her career for a dinner! She has to sneak out to make it happen. That's going after something.
  13. *You get on my nerves!* That's a very good thing! Right? *You said actors who play villains...that suggests to me that their career was primarily slanted that way. Mitchum was NOT a villain actor except on occasion.* It doesn't have to be primary. Basil is Sherlock Holmes!
  14. *He came for her and said they were getting married! Then she had to see him off at the train station...too late (in a scene that is repeated almost exactly in* *Summertime) and that's what cost her her job. You didn't watch it at all!* But that's not how it starts, is it? She breaks curfew and talks back, doesn't she?
  15. *I don't know what movie you were watching, but in mine Myra wasn't seeking anything, she was found and pursued quite determinedly.* Doesn't she choose to leave the ballet to chase after Roy? She gets in trouble for this.
  16. *He was exceptional but I don't think of him as a "villain" actor. If you were asking for characters, then he'd be in there.* He played two great villains! He's also played a couple of shady guys. *I didn't put Robert Ryan, either, since I prefer his "complex" characters.* He's probably second for me. He knows how to make a villain human. *He's NEVER "good". The closest I've seen was Gatsby and he was still a jerk.* Wow, I really am Bruce Dern!
  17. *So you didn't believe her as Myra?* What's not to believe? She's a rebellious ballerina who seeks love. That's definitely Viv. I can see her slapping the guys before shacking up with them, though. That girl sounds familiar.
  18. *That's a hard list, since I don't really follow villains.* *1. George Sanders* *2. Lee Marvin* *3. Richard Boone* *4. Boris Karloff* *5. Ray Milland* *6. Basil Rathbone* *7. Henry Daniell* *8. James Mason* *9. Lee Van Cleef* *10. Raymond Burr* That's a great list! All of them do play villains exceptionally well. Mitch would be at the top for me. *I supposed Bruce Dern ought to be on there, I loathe his villains so much! He gets honorary mention.* You hate him when he's even good! He's like me! *I'm not sure but it's been in my ClassicFlix queue.* If it's in your queue, that means it's available to rent, right?
  19. *You wouldn't see an ending like that after the war.* Boy, you've got that right. *It's true! She might throw the dresses at her bosses if they didn't believe her information.* Now that sounds more like Viv! She does throw a little bit of a fit when they question the dedication of her informants. *You see her more as the second Mrs. DeWinter? * Ha! Yeah, right! *Myra is supposed to be the less impulsive, more mature one in Waterloo Bridge in contrast to Taylor's boyish enthusiasm. Do you believe her? Him? I think they do well, and do well with the transition. She becomes emotionally unhinged by the end and he turns to stone.* He's believable because I usually think of Taylor as being lost. Viv is too full of emotion to believe she's mature. She knows how to play serious, though.
  20. *go paste your clippings.* And don't you sneak off to see a show! *My favorite villains or favorite Hitchcock villains?* Your favorite actors who play villains. *I'd like to see it.* Is it available at Netflix?
  21. *i think her persona wasn't on display in this movie until she got upset with him.* Isn't that how it is with all women? *i liked the very last shot, i didn't expect them to do such a thing. it basically humanized the "enemy" in an instant.* That's a good point. It really does. *this movie would have been great if Hitch had directed it.* That's usually the case. Just thinking of Viv as a secret agent makes me laugh because she seems too darn emotional for such a position. But, then again, it's perfect, because you wouldn't expect her as the secret agent. Are you a secret agent, Snippy?
  22. *I'm not sure I see that. But I'm glad you liked them together.* When Gary is continental, his look is similar to Conrad's. And I pretty much adore Vivien. She's such a pixie.
