  1. "Hi Maven: With all due respect to one of my favorite posters in TCM World, may I offer a correc- tion...It was not Jackie DeShannon, but Dusty Springfield (Philips 45 #40207) (1964)." -< Musical Novelty > I am one of your favorite posters??? Get outta town. Thank you. I hope I've entertained you, informed you and shared your love of classic films. As to Dusty not Jackie...I think I got my bombshells mixed up. Thank you for gently pulling my coat-tails. I stand corrected: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14Dgw_LSJ5w&feature=related I should know this, 'cuz I was around when they both had hits on the charts. (At least I didn't say Karen Carpenter or Lesley Gore). At least it got you to read this very important thread, which though I kibbitz, there's a very important message here. Thanx M.N. Now, back to our regularly programmed kazoo pla-ying.
  2. Welcome back Renee! No need to apologize for the absence. Everyone deserves a vacation. No one has an issue with that. Hopefully a good time was had by you and your family. TCM should have just left someone else manning the helm while you were away, is all. As you can see, we still look forward to the answer from your bosses on a strong change to the Code of Conduct, because the problems just won't go away. (No wishin' or hopin' or thinkin' or prayin'...plannin' or dreamin' will help, no matter WHAT Jackie DeShannon sang). We want what we've always wanted: (1). No multi-user identi- ties and (2). once banned always and forever banned. (I'm willing to re-register if it comes to that). Of course, if you ban the MEMBER and not just the NAME, that might eliminate a lot, Renee; it'd sure make your job a heckuva lot easier. Hopefully those issues were discussed at the round table meetings that were held. Remember, it'd be a win-win situation for everyone. Unfortunately, the comb and kazoo show wasn't even clever and entertaining. (I've heard better 'kazooing' on the ol' "Hollywood Palace" show). Besides, anyone who takes public transportation knows enough to move away from the man seen muttering to himself (even if he is not directly and specifically muttering to you). The majority of the Community is with you on getting a substantive change to the Message Board Code of Conduct, Renee. A stronger code would be like wolf's bane to those who want to create chaos. And again, welcome back.
  3. Thank you Madame Cutter and Miss G., for your Mann-ly recommendations. I have seen "THE FURIES" (http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?messageID=8335502 and then: for a laugh) before, but as you know, there's no-thing like a darkened theatre, a large screen, like-minded people and popcorn (alas & alack...no butter) to enjoy a real classic film. I'll be slightly afraid of the audience at the Film Forum b'cuz "THE FURIES" is kind of over-the-top, but if I pick a matinee show...those wild, blue-haired seniors take their movies much more seriously than the twenty-something hipsters. And this way I don't have to be in a fight to punch someone's lights out while Stanwyck goes through her thing. Thank you ladies. If anyone else has any suggestions (please make a good case for your recommendation) send 'em on along to me here. The festival starts this Friday. Thanx!
  4. S.O.S. The Maven needs your help... (and boy, does she ever!) From June 25th - July 15th at the Film Forum there will be three weeks of Anthony Mann?s films. I want to know if you can recommend a film of his that IS A MUST SEE in order for me to keep my qualification as a movie maven. Oh, I?ve seen ?THE GREAT FLAMARION? and ?RAW DEAL.? And I?m really looking forward to ?STRANGE IMPERSONATION? ("Hell hath no fury as a woman scal- ded by acid.?) and ?THE BAMBOO BLONDE? (I love the title). I also know he?s a tough director and gave James Stewart a second wind in his career with the westerns they did together. But if you could give me a good recommendation for a Mann film to see, I?ll go see it. I trust your opinion and may even report back in the appropriate thread, if you can stand it. Awwright awwright, I?ll spare you that. But I probably will not go see ?God?s Little Acre.? Here?s what will be shown and please forgive my categorization: WESTERN: ?The Naked Spur? ?Winchester ?73? ?Devil?s Doorway? ?The Last Frontier? ?Man of the West? ?Man from Laramie? ?Bend of the River? ?Cimarron? ?The Far Country? ?The Tall Target? ?The Furies? ?The Tin Star.? B-MOVIES: ?Dr. Broadway? ?Moonlight in Havana? ?The Great Flamarion? ?Strange Impersonation? ?The Bamboo Blonde.? (Didn?t a thread mention who the heck is Jane Frazee??) NOIR(-ISH): ?Raw Deal? ?T-Men? "Border Incident? ?Desperate? ?He Walked By Night? ?Side Street." WAR MOVIES: ?The Heroes of Telemark? ?Men In War.? SWORD, SANDAL & SOPHIA ( :x ): ?The Fall of the Roman Empire? ?El Cid.? DRAMAS: ?God?s Little Acre? ?Strategic Air Command? ?Reign of Terror? ?Thunder Bay? ?The Glenn Miller Story.? If I?m missing any, you can check it out the schedule here: http://www.filmforum.org/films/mann.html Please make a good strong case for your recommendation(s). They don?t have buttered popcorn or Raisinettes at the Film Forum. (It's kind of on the artsy fartsy healthy side). So I need some really good reasons to see some really good films. Thanx so much.
  5. :x Countessdelave, Queen of the Programming Challenge??? ALL HAIL THE QUEEN!!! :x Congratulations to you. Wonderful schedule. Everyone knows it is much MUCH harder to create than to critique. Critique takes no effort or skill at all. Can't wait to see what you will come up with as a theme. It'll be a doozy. You might make me want to jump into the waters again. Congratulations on winning this 16th Programming Challenge.
  6. "I apologize for not writing this earlier as I just noticed the absence of it myself. The Code of Conduct is currently going through an overhaul. It should be up within the week. If not, I will find out exactly when it should be back up. Thanks! -Renee (5/18/2010 - 7:47AM)" Hi there Renee, I have been back from Europe for a week now. (Great trip, btw. Beautiful country. Don't worry gang...videos will be coming. HEY! WHO said "head for the hills" I heard that). Renee and TCM Web Administrators team, I quote the statement above, since it's been a month now since we've had word from you about the status of your talks with your bosses about the Code of Conduct. The thing I'm sure you don't want is to lose your credibility with the community at large, but the credibility has been very much strained since I've been reading that you haven't gotten back to people, PMs have gone unanswered...and since tip-toeing through the threads...the situation still seems to be the same. I'm not addressing any of the trolls that might be reading this thread; that's useless and futile waste of my time, so I talk to you Renee. Balls...chutzpah...transparency...honesty...integrity...sincerity... (all the things BP's corporation does not have have and you see how well that's working for them) would be admirable traits to have as a Moderator to be able to serve the Turner Classic Message Board well. I'm not telling you how to do your job...and a tough one it is. But listen, I worked for the Bored of Dread, lovingly known as the Board of Ed for the past ten years, so I recognize ineffectualness when I see it. You promised an answer a month ago. How 'bout it? Oh I'm not ungrateful...don't get me wrong, please. I have noticed the disappearance of one big distracting name that has made film discussion and kibitzing almost feel like the way things used to be...free, easy, fun. But I also know that that one distraction has many sleeping identities already in place; so no one here is fooled. If you banned It, great. But you could do a little more. Get back to us. As you and your colleagues read this thread, you can see the baiting continues. ( ) But we're not going for the old okey doke. () We're most of us classic film buffs and have seen "GASLIGHT" ("Paula...it eez all in your imagination. Come whiz mee to zee Cazbah or may I take you to the prom?") But it will continue Renee if you don't get back to us with a Code of Conduct that has teeth...that is substantive. Girl, there's no escape. It's as simple as that. C'mon. Talk to us. You'll have us back on our two paralyzed little legs in no time. Come on....you know you want to. Now I have some responses to two members' comments and check it it out, I don't have to create twenty threads to answer each person. I'll make it all inclusive here: ?I've got just one question for you. Do you think a member who has been banned from this board should be allowed to return to the board using a new name?" - < FRANKGRIMES to C.BOGLE > I don't know what he asked you to prompt your question but all I can say to you Mr. Grimes is, that is the $64,000 question, isn?t it. I doubt you?ll get an answer from the perpetrators on that score. They couldn?t answer that question if their lives depend on it and as this thread continues you?ll see no answer will be forthcoming. (Yikes! It's kind of eerie to think that their lives do depend on the Board remaining dysfunctional). But if I may, I?d like to answer that question with my own personal opinion, unequivocably and for the record: a member who has been banned from this board should NOT be allowed to return to the board using a new name. And I?m sure all of us have the names of all the 'blunderly' different identities used here that we know originate from the Hydra's head. If it walks like a duck...and quacks like a duck...then it's a troll. ?...But I can't think of any reasonable (and REAL) person having a problem with these two little rules: One person.. one user name.. and once banned.. always banned. Unless of course they were the very ones who would get shut down and made to "play nice" after such a long career of foul play. The only person that would be hurt by instituting such simple rules as these would be the very ones who NEED to be stopped from hurting others. Golly.. that sounds like a GOOD thing, doesn't it? (but then again.. who am I to say?)? - < ROHANAKA > Yes Rohanaka, who ARE you to say? Look, just b?cuz you are a real person, with a very fulfilling life outside these boards, whose contributions to this Board is always well-received, who writes well and feels you don?t need a multitude of identities to get someone to talk to you and answer your posts, doesn?t mean you can judge the motives of a person who feels the need... who is psychologically compelled and damaged enough to communicate with people who have no desire to communicate with them. You have no idea what goes on in the mind of someone who relishes the negative attention since they know they can?t get attention in a positive manner. You have no idea what it?s like to want someone?s attention so badly, that you want to destroy the thing you can?t have. Or do you??? IF any trolls are reading this I can only quote the great Waldo Lydecker when he says in "LAURA" "Either you have been raised in some incredibly rustic community where good manners are unknown or you suffer from the common troll delusion that the mere fact of being a troll exempts you from the rules of civilized conduct." Oh c'mon...don' t waste your keystrokes complaining to me about my taking liberties with Waldo's quote. It's a one-way street I don't know why you wish to travel. I have you on < IGNORE > any- way. Renee...we the community (still) await you.
  7. FredBaetz: Yes, I do remember that he was the original captain in ?Star Trek? and that Roger Moore named his son after Hunter. MissGoddess: I hang my head in shame. How dare I call myself a maven without having ?THE SEARCHERS? in its entirety under my belt. They say confession is good for the soul, but it doesn?t feel so good. Funny that you say that about Barbara Rush, b?cuz imdb says ?The epitome of poise, charm, style and grace, beautiful brunette Barbara Rush was born in Denver, Colorado in 1927...? I first knew her from those 50?s sci-fi fare: ?When Worlds Collide? and ?It Came From Outer Space.? ...And as for head injuries, I think what happened to Vanessa Rdgrave?s daughter/Liam Neeson?s wife, Natasha Richardson, attests to your sage advice.
  8. Thank you Ro, Jackaaay. Now for my next number.... Arturo, I have read that as well. First the name change from Marguerita Cansino and then, well...the rest IS history, isn't it. I think, I'm not positive...but I think I read that Rita Hayworth was Fred Astaire's favorite partner. She danced like a dream. And looked like one, too.
  9. Everett Sloane was in "The Lady From Shanghai" with Rita Hayworth.
  10. "I guess we really need some empirical data to figure this one out." Well...empirical data does not lie; thanks for providing it. Jackaaaay, Miss G., Ro-Ro, Cinemafan... your votes are in and have been counted. Looks like Mr. Hunter wins by a gorgeous, not too neat, not criminally handsome landslide. His blue eyes pop for me. And that clinches my vote on some sub-atomic level. I liked in "A Kiss Before Dying" (Robert Wagner / Virginia Leith/ Joanne Wood-ward) they have Hunter wearing glasses. I always thought that was done in an effort to cut down on his beauty opposite Robert Wagner (who was no slouch in the looks department himself back in the day). I loved Hunter's voice too. Guess I should give "The Searchers" a chance, huh? --(A mini-confession here).-- Miss G., I posted this little excerpt from imdb for you, re: the too soon passing of Jeffrey Hunter. I was shocked to learn he was married to one of my favorite favorite actresses, Barbara Rush. I just saw her on a little segment where she talked of her admiration of James Mason. I've always liked her voice. Now there's (IMHO) an unsung actress who TCM could show a little love to, along with Piper Laurie...and maybe Julie Adams????? Thanxx ladies, for weighing in. I'm sure it was a tough decision. < sigh! > ;-) "...Shortly after signing to co-star with Vince Edwards in The Desperados (1969), Hunter suffered another cerebral hemorrhage while on a short flight of steps in his living room, and collapsed, injuring his head in the fall. It was not known how long he had been unconscious when he was finally found. He died, without regaining consciousness, the following day after surgery to repair the skull fracture, at age 42. Son with Barbara Rush, Christopher (b. 29 August 1952)."
  11. Hi Moira, Miss WimpyG., I think Angela Bassett looks very similar to the actress who played Bernie Mac's wife on his tv show, Kellita Smith. More famously, the other two actresses who I believe could be in the same family, bridge yesterday and today. I think Natalie Wood morphed into Catherine Zeta-Jones.
  12. Ha...Eddie better be quick, 'cuz if Gilda comes down like that...Whitey and Lumpy and Lumpy's dad and Donna Stone's husband Alex and Herman Munster and the courtship of Eddie's father, and Timmy & Lassie's dad, and My Friend Flicka's dad and Sky King and Dennis the Menace and HIS dad along with Mr. Wilson, and That Girl's boyfriend Don...will ALL be sitting at the breakfast table, waiting for their eggs...with bibs tied around their necks to collect the drool. Put the blame on Mame indeed. Put something on her.
  13. Ladies, who do you find more attractive: John Derek or Jeffrey Hunter??
  14. If the Mods ever get it together and have some transparency about their process, and we all have to re-register again due to a significant & substantial change in the Code of Conduct (my kingdom for a significant & substantial change to the Code of Conduct; when Renee...WHEN??) I will use my same screen handle.
  15. Let's not 4-get that the luscious Paulette Goddard said that line first in "THE WOMEN." But Paulette couldn't tap 500 times a minute... Love that shot of Ann.
  16. How's It Going Grimesy - "You've seen EAST SIDE, WEST SIDE', right?" Yes sir I have. It's been a while though. It might be considered a (dreaded) "woman's picture." I love Babs...but her "injured wife" is no match for Ava's "Other Woman." Did I mention I love Ava when she's baaaaaad? "It's hard to duck a skillet while avoiding kicks!" True dat, my grey friend. But if this were the movies...you two would be in a clinch by now. What's the hold up?? ;-)
  17. Like the pix of Kim Novak you posted. And look forward to reading the fourth installment about your festival adventures. Enjoyed the third one as well.
  18. ?Oh, dear, Peacemaker would LOATHE Ava's character in ?East Side, West Side.? And the Mave would love her.? - < MissGoddess > ?Oh, I'm sure CinemAva does.? - < FrankGrimes > You BOTH would be right. Ava as Bad Girl? Ohhhhh, I?m so there, gang. Remember to duck next time, Grimesy. Your injuries look painful. Ouch!
  19. "I have not seen Gilda. It is not in his collection. That does not surprise me if it is about unhappy love affair. He is hopeless romantic." - < SansFin > Being a hopeless romantic is fine. But I do hope you'll one day watch "GILDA." As a movie buff, you'll appreciate the performance Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford give in this movie. Again, congra- tulations and I agree with Suex2...your story would make a great movie, especially since it has a happy ending. "L'amour, l'amour. Toujours l'amour!!!" - Mary Boland as Countess DeLave in "THE WOMEN"
  20. You're good. I wish I could afford to GIVE myself $10,000 in my fantasies, but seeing that little rabbit below with the carrot and the glasses brought back pleasant memories.
  21. Bacon-wrapped bread sticks. Ingeniously evil? OMG, that?s a heart attack in the making. ?MAGIC.? Great movie. Anthony Hopkins and Ann-Margret did a fantastic job. Creepy doesn?t half describe it. Oooh! Was Charlie McCarthy scary too?
  22. SansFin (soon to be Mrs.Capuchin) congratulations on your upcoming wedding, your name change and a new life. After seeing "GILDA" the other night...reading your posts below restores my faith in love. Sincere congratulations!
  23. She was never lovelier... These boards are a confessional, aren't they? And I've got just the nun you should talk to: http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=114903&tstart=0 Mother Teresa Favell...and boy does SHE have stories to tell ya.
