  1. "BODY HEAT" Kathleen TURNER or Lana TURNER (I threw in "White Cargo" 'cuz those duck choices were just plain whack!) Message was edited by: CineMaven--WHACK!
  2. Dr. Jacquith was a good matchmaker too. Instant family...
  3. Did Gable & Garfield have a kid together?? You're gonna burn SCSU. You're gonna burn...
  4. CM: "She may not be a love goddess, but there's something about Gloria." MOLO: "Yes! There is something about Gloria. That something is harder to pin down for me. I think that's why the word 'enigmatic' always comes up in a lot of descriptions of her... Gloria is often simply swept up into events and often a victim of them and yet she draws you in and you can't turn away...you can't escape her. She is beautiful but as Frank has said, there is something about the way she looks at a man. Maybe it's that regal bloodline. That sly girlish smile that hints of a happier past and offers perhaps a glimpse of some easier more innocent time that's been swept away a long time ago. There's that something behind the eyes." CM: Much more eloquently put than I could ever muster. I think you've expressed the kernel...the core about Gloria in what I've underlined of your quote. ;-) ;-) FG: "Love goddess: no. Sex goddess: yes. My reaction to Gloria is almost always a sexual one. Is that high brow enough for you?" MOLO: "I agree. She is a sex goddess. She exudes sex but there is something else there isn't it Frank? The thing that draws you in when you know you are probably better off backing away..." CM: Yep, Frank...that's pretty high brow. Molo, I guess those of us who appreciate her are like moths to a flame. Luckily we're sitting in the safety of a darkened theatre (or living room) watching "The Big Heat" or "Crossfire" and not going down in flames. ;-) ;-) FG:"I like that, CM. I definitely like Gloria's voice. I'm still trying to put my finger on why." MOLO: "I like how you put that CM. It's the best description I've heard so far." CM: She has one of the distinctive voices. Close your eyes. You can see her. ;-) ;-) MOLO: "In A Lonely Place: Dixon Steele: Nobody can call me the things he did. Laurel Gray: A blind, knuckle-headed squirrel. That's REAL bad. I love her voice but as with everything else about this lady, I'm not completely sure why. Kind of like what you said Frank." CM: It's so funny that you added this to your thoughts Molo. I wrote and directed a small film called "The Right Girl" back in 2001 and stole "the blind, knuckle-headed squirrel" line for my film. Funny you plucked that one. ;-) ;-) FG: "I usually don't like the voluptuous girls all that much, although I do like girls with hips. Gloria's figure was lovely but that's not what attracts me to her. It's how she uses her body that really draws me in." MOLO: "Gloria did have delicate features. I like her face. I also agree with both of you. You can tell she knew her way around a bedroom and she definitely knew how to use her body and she could just be sexy in an off-handed way. It came naturally to her." CM: "...in an off-handed way...getting drawn in." That's the key Frankie Molo. Remember her in "The Bad & the Beautiful" she takes a few steps away from Powell and then walks back to him and kisses him square on the lips (and not that fake Hollywood-style kissing) to get her way. I think Dick Powell realized he really got kissed. Wonder if June Allyson was on the set what with Lana & Gloria and that gorgeous brunette: Elaine Stewart. ;-) ;-) MOLO: "Very well put! I like that 'quiet heat-seeking missile' remark." CM: I'm very proud of that line if I must say so myself. ;-) ;-) FG: "...she has the ability to rub up on you even from a distance. Meow." MOLO: "I like that analogy Frank. I think both you and CM's comments compliment each other well. In Macao she knows when to say something, what to say, and when not to say anything. It's a great "Gloria Grahame" role. She's in the background but she grabs your attention!" CM: I like the team work of the three of us...again I say Jules et Jim. But anyone else wanting to jump...feel free. ;-) ;-) ;-) FG: "You are very correct about Gloria being "cultured or tramp, victim or vamp." In fact, she could be all that with just one character and that's a big reason why I like her. She's many women in one. I love those type of girls." CM: You are sooooooo right Frank. All that rolled up in just one character. And it takes quite some acting skill to show those shades of characterization without lines clearly delineating each type. More??? Yep...more is on the way fellas!! ;-) ;-) Message was edited by: CineMaven--had to clean up my punctuation marks.
  5. Bronxgirl: "Just think, if Garfield had played opposite Doris in the Ruth Etting bio it would have been called LOBE ME OR LEAVE ME." Okay, that's it!!! GO TO YOUR ROOM!!!
  6. BARGAR: "Poinciana - I can't believe I'm doing it again, but I agree about Garbo! When she was quoted as saying "I want to be alone", I said OKAY!" The ink's not quite dry on the truce after you agreed with Poinciana about Garbo...but you know what they say: To err is human, to forgive Divine." (Was Garbo called "The Divine One"??) ;-) ;-) ;-)
  7. Well Bargar: "Miss Cinie, mam'. Not the "villagers"!!! I guess I will escape this thread before it is too late. Maybe Dr. Frankenstein can give me a room for the night!?" Don't bother hiding there...the doctor's hands are full with a nagging fiancee, an illiterate hunchback manservant and necormaniacal-challenged cadaver.
  8. Yep, that was me. 40th row. Center section. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, Mr. Gable.
  9. Yes, Fedya. Make room for me on the couch, we've only got a fifty-minute hour. Tick tock tock!
  10. Lee J. Cobb would marry someone who didn't like movies??? I can't believe that!
  11. AHHH! The great Conrad Veidt. Is that "He Who Laughs?" Tell me. And don't say "MR. SARDONICUS."
  12. What an egotistical moment for Rhett. Here he is at the ball and he bids on the woman desired by ALL the men of Atlanta, who is now a widow. What balls...uh, I mean chutzpah. Yes sir...that's my baby!!
  13. Who would pick a partner that didn't like movies? Now THAT is crazy!!!
  14. Wallace Ford plays Shelley's dad in "A Patch of Blue." Nice l'il history.
  15. I wonder if we went to the same screening. Was that at RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL??? (NYC). I recall an audible sigh when Gable leaned on the bottom of that staircase.
  16. I've always said this to myself, but you're bringing this to the forefront...MY GOD, PAULETTE GODDARD IS HOT!! And that in later years she did not care about her film career and was rich and happy is all the more better. Whew! Chaplin was one lucky son of a gun.
  17. Thanxxx so much for weighing in on my start for my Double G entry, Frank. Your words mean a lot to me; always have. A tease??? Ohhhhhhhh, I have many tricks in my repertoire. You have NO idea! Now, where's Molo??
  18. Darn it...I'll never be able to look at him the same way again. Thanxx for bringing up his lobes.
  19. Garbo...a big ol' Swedish girl??? Hey gaaang!! She's over here in General Discussions. The villagers and their torches are a-coming!
  20. Whew! You know I wanna play by the rules on this board. So I officially say: ROBERT CUMMINGS.
  21. MOLO: "Keep looking for those notes CineMaven." Well, heeeere's a sneak preview, Molo: "I may not be physiologically equipped to talk about Gloria Grahame, but I'll give it the good ol' college try. Don't worry. I will keep it high brow and will discuss some of her roles. But one usually reacts to her physicality. Now of course we all know who the movie goddeses are: _____, ____, ____. You can fill in the blanks your own way. I'll opt for: Ava, Lana, Rita, Hedy, Elizabeth and Sophia. She may not be a love goddess, but there's something about Gloria. HER VOICE: Her voice was not whispery or baby-doll. It was sharp, tart. She didn't squeal and wasn't breathless, but you could hear the hurt in her voice... if she let you. HER BODY: She was not voluptuous like Kim, Marilyn or Jayne. She had delicate features but you know she knew her way around the bedroom... In "MACAO" you could see the astounding super-structure of Jane Russell from outer space. But Gloria was like a quiet heat-seeking missile who'd look you square in the eyes with arched eyebrows that said "I dare you!" She could be cultured or tramp, victim or vamp. She was a sex kitten that you'd just want to cuddle and nothing more; unless she let you. She was glorious and under-rated. She was Gloria Grahame. Will this be okay for a start???
  22. ILRM: Anyone know a good psychiatrist?" WHY? Is there one missing????????? I'm coo coo for cocopuffs for Hedy Lamarr. That's right...I don't need no stinkin' cure!!!
  23. Loved him in "The Birds" and "The VIPs" and... I guess I'm too forgiving. Thank you SCSU. :-)
