Chip, you've given me hope. If Lumet can still be directing at eighty-three, I can start directing and I'm...I'm...over twenty-one. I'll check out Lumet this weekend.

Sense & Sensibility/NO 1990'S PLEASE!
CineMaven replied to ChipHeartsMovies's topic in General Discussions
Mark, may I join you and Chip in the fight for showing more films from the 1930's and 1940's?? I take classic film to mean from the classic era, the "Golden Age" of Hollywood. I'd rather watch a B-movie from the 40's ("Scared to Death" with Lugosi or "Leech Woman" 1960) which certainly aren't classics (unless you count classically bad) than a great movie from the 90's if shown on TCM. (I'll turn to HBO, MAX or Showtime for that fare). I'll take my Harlow and Astor and Gable and Cagney and Ella and Mayo and Kim and Tierney shaken...not stirred. Hi Chip ;-) !! I'm lucky living here in New York City. So I'd better run NOT walk to catch the new Sidney Lumet film. Thanks for the mini review. Now... back to the 30's & 40's for "The Walking Dead" and "Isle of the Dead" for my TCM Halloween fix. I'll add this to my taping of "The Devil Commands." And please no more sucker punches about "VERTIGO." I just read a thesis from FrankGrimes on it that was masterful. Any way of changing yer mind? -
And boy oh boy...didja the kiss she plants on Lizabeth Scott? Surely you must've or must see "Desert Fury." Mary's good in that too. (And in a small part in "A Kiss Before Dying.") I love Mary Astor.

Nice fotos. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAva!

Randy: "I thought of you and CineMaven yesterday afternoon as i strolled around and lunched in Manhattan. I believe you folks are currently living in that area, i think. " Yes Randy...I'm here in NY...Manhattan specifically. Tell me, where IS Serendipity 3 exactly??? Aaaah, autumn in New York. Just like the song goes. And it's a great town, too. I must give "Johnny Eager" a real full-blown chance. Everytime I've tried to watch it, it didn't hold my attention like say: "I Bury The Living" or "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" or "Leech Woman" does. But no doubt, if just to stare, drool, gaze or ogle Lana and Taylor, should be worth the price of admission. Is the film worth my full cognitive attention folks???

"Murder, My Sweet." I absolutely simply can't get her out of my mind in that film. Her voice is like honey; her motives are murderous. Just kill Ampthor for her and she'll be yours...for life. Your life! Love Claire Trevor and she had a great movie star name too!!
-
Perhaps I've done Mary an injustice becuz I tend to see the same movies of hers over and over again. "The Maltese Falcon" "The Great Lie" "Dodsworth" "Across the Pacific" "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte." "Red Dust" and the Peyton Place sequel. But I do love her. She had a great speaking voice and such an air of sophistication. Caught her in the gender switching movie that Carole Landis made. Fine actress, handsome woman. Wonderful to watch. Compelling to watch. And oooh that diary... I love Mary Astor!

Okay Knute...I mean, MissGoddess. How 'bout the lovely Ms. Dunne? She was as femme as they come. And not a pinstripe in her wardrobe. Stil love the bantering.

I still say you two oughta write a book of essays. Your by-play makes me think of Loy & Grant, or is that Dunne & Grant. No I meant Roz & Grant. There....THAT'S the ticket!!! I meant Kerr & Grant. ;-) Or would that be Cary & Kate. Whatever...wonderful to read your missives. Have you two been properly introduced in real life??

"I can just imagine a high school graduate's first job interview: ' Well sir, I don't read and write too good, but I know who directed Casablanca. ' " Well bObby...I know I'd hire him as a neurophysicist if he knew that Curtiz directed "Casablanca." Now...let's talk about Jane Fonda. That was also a good incendiary thread. Oooh, I say him becuz we all know girls can't do science.

Could it be "Valley of Gwangi" with James Franciscus and Gila Golan???
-
Do you think he was aware his mom was having an affair with Janet Gaynor?
-
Oh MissG., what a luscious shot you chose to post of Lana (in the pix below her & Barry Sullivan). Gorgeous. Damn, I've got to find some more superlatives. Thanxx.
-
I had to scroll down again and check out that solitaire photo. I, too, thought it was Grace Kelly. And the color shots of Kerr are gorgeous. Too bad her early career didn't show her in color, can you imagine her on the beach with Lancaster in color. Oh well... Beautiful photographs of a beautiful lady.

The Lovely Ladies of Hitchcock (1950-1976): A Visual Tour
CineMaven replied to FrankGrimes's topic in Films and Filmmakers
FrankGrimes: "Linda Nordley" in Mogambo was very icy, although I still found her to be cute. See how stupid guys like me really are. Go ahead, you can agree with me. I've opened the door for you, so walk on through. Hey, I opened a door. Chivalry ain't dead after all." CineMaven: Okay, Frank...you opened the door and I'm walking through: men...what a different breed of cat you are. There...I've said it. Take THAT!! FrankGrimes: "That's a great question, but I'm actually rather unqualified to answer it since I'm not too familiar with today's stars. George Clooney is the closest thing to Cary Grant for me, so I guess I have to say him. I prefer vulnerable blondes for Hitch's films, so I'm not sure who qualifies in today's actress realm for such a role. Who would you select?" CineMaven: I'd be looking at actresses like Charlize Theron or Michelle Pfeiffer. Scarlett Johannson gives off a Kim Novak vibe (in the voluptuous department; I dunno about vulnerability). I'd also give Jessica Biel a chance to be in a Hitchcock movie. She'd be like Madeleine Carroll or Priscilla Lane...helping the hero to escape and find the true villain. Frank, I demand you go out and see some of today's movies. After all, today's stars (some of them, few of them) will be tomorrow's Bette Davises or Irene Dunnes or Hepburns. Ugh! Who am I kidding. Nobody today can touch Ava or Gable or Loy. But still Frank...go out there and see what cinema is offering today. -
"Leech Woman" is one of my FAVORITE movies. Please write in what you think of it. Check out Kim Hamilton in this. She plays the African queen as a young woman. God, she was gorgeous. (And she was married to Werner Klemperer until his death). Also am a big fan of Coleen Gray. "Nightmare Alley" "Kiss of Death." Why she ended up in this I'll never know. Yeah, it might be schlock, but who says schlock is bad? I love it: "Alligator People" "The Wasp Woman" etc. I haven't seen "Leech Woman" in a while and $1.00 is quite a bargain. Curious as to your thoughts. Let us know. Thanx!

Dan Seymour. (Darkly handsome, to me). Richard Denning or William Lundigan.
-
I remember her in "Marked Woman" with Bette Davis. I thought she did a good solid job in that film, holding her own with the other "party girls" in that flick. She was a witness to Jane Bryan's death in that film. Would you be able to give us some info on Bryan? I know she left the business many years ago and lives in France I believe. (P.S. Jewell's on the right).
-
LOL!!! You guys get all the hunky handsome ones!!! ;-)

Good luck in contacting him esp. since he's not in good health. All the good ones are leaving and old Hollywood is rapidly disappearing. Always a fan of his. "Command Decision" "The Human Comedy" "A Guy Named Joe" and many of his M-G-M fare, etc. Boyishly handsome (love his voice). I wish him well. Good luck contacting him.

That too is the system I use for my videotapes. Now I mostly have one particular movie star on a VHS tape. ---------------------------- " heehee! she actually does maureen. she has every disc labeled with numbers on the side of the cases, and a big binder with all the movies listed in alphabetical order with their numbers next to them. she has a whole system. heehee i have a system similar to hers in my room. it is so fun to be organized. "

"Apparently son Michael was on set, too, but somehow I can't imagine that would have stopped Kirk---he had a way of making opportunities to flirt. I think it's Kirk who Gene Tierney said in her autobiography climbed up to her bedroom window once. Talk about determined." ----------------- I remember Michael Douglas talking of this in the voice- over over his Dad's career. And as you noted, see what Gene Tierney brings out in a man. G-g-g-rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
