  1. "I think we can conclude that this is a pretty tolerant thread (although, in saying that, I haven't yet made public my belief that Al Pacino is insanely over-rated.....okay! Now I must run for the hills and take cover!)"

Come out! Come out, where ever you are!!! Oh there you are Nando...

  2. Nando: "That was a wonderfully thoughtful, insightful and sensitive review of this astounding movie..."

I am very flattered by your comments and I thank you. But look what I had to work with...a great Bette Davis film. I give all praise to her. I also give a lot of good-natured jabs to folks on this board (and take some good hits in return). But I truly mean no harm. I love movies.

I absolutely LOVE and appreciate movies and stars from the "classic" era. Thank you for taking the time to read my comments. The other posters had some well-written words themselves on this thread and I'm sure they thank you for their compliments as well.

Uh-oh...and next, "Now, Voyager" on the Essentials tonight. Or that might open up a can o' worms re: McGowan's hosting duties.

    Take good care...

Message was edited by: CineMaven...well I had to get in there that "Now, Voyager" is on tonite.

  3. These lines are from "Swing Time." I wasn't quite in the mood to watch Fred & Ginger this morning, but I couldn't switch channels until I heard my favorite exchange between: Victor Moore and the great Helen Broderick. Moore sits at the receptionist's desk (Broderick) when she's about to eat her sandwich. We cut to them:

HB: You know, that's the most marvelous trick I've ever seen a magician do."

VM: You mean the, uh, one with the four aces?

HB: No, the way you made my club sandwich disappear.

VM: Who me? My dear young lady...

HB: You'd better take a club sandwich out of this hat!

VM: Are you accusing me of eating your sandwich?

HB: You might begin by taking that piece of lettuce off your necktie.

I laugh EVERY time! And Broderick's delivery is worthy of Eve Arden or Roz Russell. or Ann Sheridan. Great!

  4. Well, what I've seen on the FMC schedule are:

    Friday 05/09/2008

8:00pm - 3:30am "Gentlemen's Agreement," with one of our most handsome and earnest movie stars: Gregory Peck. A fine performance by the lovely Dorothy McGuire and the wonderful Oscar performance of Celeste Holm.

    Saturday 5/10/2008

8:00am - 9:30am "It Happened in Brooklyn," for those Carole Landis fans. Gone too soon.

9:30am - 12:00pm "Carousel" with the booming voice of that handsome baritone, Gordon McRae...and the very pretty Shirley Jones.

12:00pm - 2:00pm "Move Over, Darling" Doris Day...perky as ever; James Garner...a hunk and light comedian if ever there was one, both doing the re-make of the classic "The Awful Truth."

2:00pm - 4:00pm "I Was a Male War Bride" with Cary Grant and Ann Sheridan. I wish I could see them in another movie together. They had nice chemistry.

I hope this was helpful. Enjoy!

  5. Hi Nando: "Oh My God! I had NO IDEA that Mamie Van Doren was still with us! I would have bet my life savings (not much, admittedly!) that she was long gone. How great that she's still with us! Thanks, Cinemaven, for giving 'The Gift of Life' to good ol' Mamie!"

I can't take credit for that gift of life to Mamie Van Doren. I didn't know she was alive. Must've been another --doctor-- uh, poster.

  6. I agree Nando. Just watch any number of Davis' movies of the late 30's and 1940's. She truly was the Queen.

Now, I would say: "as for standing there and doing nothing while mesmerizing an audience...that'd be Hedy Lamarr's forte..."but Ava G. will jump down my throat and put down Lamarr. So I won't say that. I wrote a long-**** review of "The Letter" somewhere here on this Message Board, that I was flattered to read was enjoyed by folks. Check that out and see what Bette Davis can do with just a look, a knitting needle and some lace.

Sublime. Bette ROCKS! And Virginia Mayo is HOT!

  7. VIOLETS: "Francis, Anne - one of the most beautiful actresses to ever grace the silver screen was in Forbidden Planet and played the maniquin on The Twilight Zone who thought

she was alive - her sunny blonde beauty was a wonder to behold..."

What a wonderful description of the sultry Anne Francis. Elizabeth Allan was a real looker as well in that "Twilight Zone" episode.

Now to continue the game...Zorina, Vera. After Sonja Henie, another ice skating star of the 1940's.

Ooops! I skipped some letters. So sue me. ;-)
