  1. Helloooooooo Molo: "I'd definitely consider myself lucky to end up with Alice Faye. We could have Cesar Romero and Carmen Miranda over for pinochle and cocktails. What a fun time that would be! Hopefully we could meet up with Frank and Gloria at the Mocambo later in the evening.

CineMaven just out of curiosity who would be your date? I'm guessing from your answer in the handsome guy thread that maybe it's Power, Flynn or Gable. Care to clue us in?"

Thanxxx for asking my taste in men. It could be you & Frank. Aaah, what a Jules & Jim scene that would be. But to meet up with you guys at the Mocambo, the choice is easy. No...not Tyrone Power. He is absolutely gorgeous to look at, but maybe too pretty. Errol Flynn might not take "no" for an answer; (remember that statutory thing?) I'd have to go with the King. Gable and I will join you guys for drinks at the Mocambo, after we come from the Brown Derby.

  2. JACK: "But the folks who responded are making fun, and this is really kind of sad. We all love TCM. Are the posters on these message boards so closed minded that they can't even admit that a host could make a mistake? ?My TCM, right or wrong???

I, for one, am not close-minded. I wholeheartedly admit that the TCM hosts make mistakes. And I make mistakes too. We all do. It?s only human. And it?s okay. I just wanted to point out that everyone makes mistakes. BTW: My TCM right AND wrong!!

NANDO: "Well, please excuse my typo. It seems to have been the cause of a great deal of mirth on your part. I am NOT a native, mother-tongue English speaker, a state that I am sure is shared by others who enjoy this forum. I wonder if you were posting on a French or Spanish or Italian forum how you would feel if others pick up on and poke fun at little typos or spelling erros. I just think that ridiculing people for being foreign and still grappling with the finer points of English spelling (or simply for being careless typers!) is a bit petty. But, hey....as they say in almost EVERY country; 'Whatever floats your boat.'"

I don't mean to be petty, but which boat? The Titanic, the Andrea Dorea, or the Nina, Pinta & Santa Maria? Please be specific. For the record, my boat is not floated by ridiculing people. (There are others on this board that are totally into ridicule so be ready.) My question Nando is how would I know that you are a foreigner though? There was nothing in your initial post that indicated that. (Go back and read your post of 4:05pm). My mom is Puerto-Rican and was so very self-conscious about her accent that she would not answer our home phone for years. So I am sensitive to that. But how would I know English is a second language for you? (I would fail miserably trying to use my high school French by the way. Ou est la bibliotheque?)

Nando: "And so what if the poster mistakenly wrote Herman instead of Ben...HE isn't working on television with writers and editors, nor being broadcast to millions of viewers as an 'authority' on film."

The Ben/Herman mistake is too egregious an error for us film buffs to let slide. Don't you know posting on this board, one is under microscopic scrutiny?? I'm under the microscope right now answering you. But you'll learn.

Again Nando: "Um.... read back. The original post was NOT pointing out R.O mistakes; it was pointing out a B.M mistake. (We all love R.O....and who couldn't love his (mis) pronounciation of certain words, especially any titles or actors who are French! He's adorable and nobody's disputing that. The thread was actually about another presenter. Perhaps you 'misread' the original post."

Nosiree Bob, uh...I mean Nando; I did not misread the original post. But being a member of this board for almost a year now...I could see that the thread was heading towards an Osborne-bashing and I just wanted to defend my Bobby. A couple of posts after the initial one started to point out Robert Osborne's mistakes/mispronounciations and I wanted to head it off at the pass. Did a good job didn't I? ;-) No...

KYLE: "I don't have a problem with your dissecting my post for typos. (At least I am one of the few that can spell Mankiewicz) But I hope you understand that a 'typo' is much different than stating something as fact that is not true. I also hope you'd agree that Robert Osborne would have caught the mistake in the text immediately. And it says 'something' about Ben Mankiewicz that he didn't."

I totally concur with you that a typo is way different from a factual error. And I also agree that Robert Osborne would have caught that error in a heartbeat. I was on the TCM set once and Mr. Osborne reads the copy before he starts taping and the staff is there with imdb at the ready.

And yes...you are sooooooo right that this says something more about young Master Mank than anything else.

I'm glad you can spell Mankiewicz and perhaps recognize that I was not trying to float my boat on the S.S. Ridicule, but had my tongue firmly in cheek when I responded to this thread.

Oh, and if anyone out there posts on these boards, please let us know if you're a foreigner or not. We'll be forgiving of your mistakes because you're not familiar with the language and not because you're illiterate.

    Okay, let the flaming begin...

Message was edited by: CineMaven: Had to correct my errors.

  3. "And Robert Osborne can't pronounce Una Merkel...life goes on."

    I love his mispronounciations!

"The most "enlightening" aspect about this stumble was realizing Ben Mankiewicz has never seen Hello, Dolly or he would have quickly caught it himself... Right about now, I'd bet next month's rent he'd read Thorton Wilder is Gene Wilder's father if it was placed in front of him. "

I wouldn't bet next month's rent on the mistake you made spelling the great playwright's first name though.

"Wouldn't it be fiun to think that it was "sabotage" and that the writers have it in for him?"

Nah...that wouldn't be FUN to think that he might be undermined by his writers. That's a horrible thought. Flubs or not...I'd rather see him read the teleprompter than anyone else. Love him.

"...There are probably thousands of young people out there right now who will bet their lives on the fact that Lucille Ball stared in 'Hello, Dolly'."

Who did Lucy have a staring contest with in "Hello Dolly?" I don't remember the scene where Lucy stared in "Hello Dolly" since she didn't appear in it. BTW, our beloved host spells his name: Osborne.

"Herman Mankieweitz made a Turner Classic Blooper..."

You mistakenly wrote Herman Mankiewitz when you should've written Ben Mankiewicz. But you've been corrected on that mistake already.

I only point these out because we all make mistakes. I admit we're not on tv and Robert Osborne is and facts should be checked more thoroughly, but I sense a glee in pointing out his mistakes.

Let's give the Oz a break.

  4. Saaay Bronxie: "The Australian film sounds good; I'll see if I can catch it. Mom wants to go to her favorite Chinese buffet about that time, however. (the "early bird" dinners so beloved by the seniors here in SoFla)."

Did you ever catch "Careful, He Might Hear You" or did dinner win out? I've got Ty on tape and will try & catch that this week.

  5. "Is it just me, or does that pretzel look like Joan Crawford?"

If it's Joanie in TORCH SONG, the pretzel looks better."

Easy...easy on Joan. Who posted their colon on this thread???

  6. Hey Poinciana: "And I agree abt Anne Francis, saw her in a play once and she was gorgeous.

How abt Barbara Rush? Perfect face and enviable figure. (Saw her in many plays, saw her in The Supporting Cast three times, once in Blithe Spirit and Steel Magnolias.)"

WOW!!! I ENVY YOU!!! You've just named two of my favorite actresses. I loved Anne Francis ("HONEY WEST") and really was a big big fan of Barbara Rush: ("The Young Philadelphians" and when she let her hair down in "Strangers When We Meet" aaah!) A fine fine actress!! Did you get to meet either one of those ladies? If I had a successful career as a director, I'd hire them both on the spot.

  7. Is there no happy medium? Paul & Joanne don't quite look like Ma & Pa Kettle. I think they would be a welcomed pair to talk about, perhaps a night of their films ("From the Terrace" "The Long Hot Summer") or individually ("The Three Faces of Eve" "HUD" "The Hustler").

I'll forgive you about Anita Yoda Ekberg. (SCSU, you'd better watch your step).Guess I was more shocked by her appearance than anything.

I would love to see some celebrities from the classic era talk about their films. who cares if the younger viewers gag. They could learn something...we could too.

A little next time Fred. You could give your fellow poster a heart attack.
