Anne Archer is a honey. I never understood why Douglas strayed. But why DO men stray?
Ahhhhh: opportunity...opportunity...OPPORTUNITY!

Cinemaven: "And you've given me one of the inner secrets of men. When you guys whistle merrily the next morning (and whistle the movie's theme song in a jazzed up way), it means you've had a grand time the night before. Damn, no wonder those dwarves whistled while they worked."
FrankGrimes:"Now that killed me! You gotta watch out for those dwarves. They've got a healthy appetite."
ME AGAIN: You know, I don't think there was enough of Snow White to go around. Hence Grumpy, Dopey, Sleepy...
As for school's out...guess all men are just school boys where girls are concerned; even if the girl is a lethal lady femme fatale. Boys, be careful whose books you carry home from school.

Ava no doubt is an absolute stunner. And there were many names on this thread that could raise the dead (Audrey, Grace, Rita, Lana, Gene, Myrna, Lombard, et al).
But again, I will tell you who, simply, is the most beautiful woman in motion picture history...and why.
Elizabeth Taylor ("Cleopatra")Jean Simmons (look at her in "Spartacus") are two of the ladies-in-waiting in the beauty department. And today's Catherine Zeta Jones is really the only contender today. But to answer the original question of this thread: "While I do think she is beautiful I disagree on two points-- she could act, and very well in my opinion but not so sure on the most beautiful ever to grace the screen. Any thoughts? Gene Tierney wins my vote."
My thought would STILL be Hedy Lamarr. And why? Because all those ladies that you good people have named on this list, would agree that Hedy Lamarr was the most beautiful. So if Hayward and O'Hara and Hayworth and Horne and Ava and DeHavilland and Bergman etc. would say: " Oh yes, when I was at the studio commissary (or Ciro's...or a movie premiere) I saw Hedy Lamarr up close. And oh my God she was absolutely the most beautiful creature I have ever seen" who am I to argue.
Hedy Lamarr is the girl who could steal your girl. ;-)

Hi PKTREKGIRL: "Favorite: BOOMERANG! (1947) and THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946) - tie
Least Favorite: probably one of his movies from the 60's...but I can't decide which one."
Well...you can start with "HOT RODS TO HELL." I love Dana & Jeanne Crain together; I love seeing them together again from "State Fair" to "Madison Avenue" but then "Hot Rods..." whew! What a stinker. But I guess it was relevant to the theme of movies back in the 60's...

It's great seeing John Gavin's name included among them. He certainly was a hunk.
-
And Lawrence of Arabia's gluteus was certainly maximused wasn't it by that Turkish devil Cyrano de Bergerac!
-
Well, a picture's worth a thousand words. Draw, Ethan!

"...Sorry. All that's left are JuJubes and Good and Plenty."
I don't wanna go to bed! I don't wanna go to bed! I want my Maypo. Or at the very least, a box of Mike & Ike. Hey, ya think that was 'brokeback candy'?? Sorry I missed the fun.

Thanxx for participating. With so many threads floating around the board, it's flattering to have folks respond. May I ask some of you about your choices??
(1.) MOLO - Eclectic list, but I suggest you leave their big evolved future heads alone. Some of us might have progeny that survive into the future.
(2.) Bargar - For TYRONE POWER, what made you pick "Witness..." and not "Nightmare Alley"?
(3). Virginia - For STANWYCK, why this film so early in her career when she chewed up a lot of scenery later on?
(4.) bOb - For KELLY, why "...Rain" and not "American in Paris"??
(5.) Sweet Smell - For BURT, why "...Success" and not the bombastic "Elmer Gantry"?
(6.) Triple HHH (H3) - I'm glad you decided to play along and share some videos with the future and not hoard them all for yourself. ;-) My question to you is why an invisible CLAUDE RAINS than any numbers of films where we could see him?
Hope you guys can indulge me just a bit further when I ask you why, for those particular actors you've picked, why you find e.g. "NIGHT NURSE" the definitive Barbara Stanwyck film or Claude Rains film or Gene Kelly film etc.

Hey SCSU: "CM, sorry you weren't here earlier...we could have used you for referee. All the really good stuff got deleted."
I went back over the thread to see where the derailment started. Now I couldn't read his response to me becuz I have him on Ignore. But that was the beginning of the end of this thread.
Referee?? Whew! That'd be a tough gig. But folks here seem quite able to take care of themselves. Referee? I want some Twizzlers & Raisinets.

FrankieG., how are ya. Yes, Gable is among one of my favorite actors. Just a real man's man. Great films, Lombard. I love watching him. (Maybe not so much later in the 1950's,but definitely for the bulk of his career 30's-40's). No one was more dashing than he in "Gone With the Wind."
I have many more favorite actors, but I thought I'd better adhere to the rules of the posted question before my words got twisted up out of context. Good reading you and again, thanxx for your contributions re: "Out of the Past." The screen caps were great. I know I was being a little "naughty" but hopefully not lewd.
-
Yep...yep...yep on all counts. There is a similarity. Tierney's eyes, though, set her apart from the other two.
-
Listen...I don't do to popcorn, peanuts, Cracker Jacks. But do you have any Twizzlers or Raisinets?
Oh oh...and some 3-D glasses.
Uh when does the Giant Claw come down and scoop up the trolls???
-
Gee, I wish I guy would narrate that about me.
-
Fred & Frank...thank you so much for giving my question some thought and research.
I'm going to push this one bit further before you guys get sick of me and send me to bed without supper.
After the towel is thrown and the camera pans to the rainy stormy outdoors, it cuts back inside the room where Mitchum is closing the cabana door. I think they did not "do it" then becuz they would never make love while the door was open. I must say there dialogue after he closes the door was great foreplay.
And you've given me one of the inner secrets of men. When you guys whistle merrily the next morning (and whistle the movie's theme song in a jazzed up way), it means you've had a grand time the night before. Damn, no wonder those dwarves whistled while they worked.
Greer & Mitchum soaking wet from the rain is a nice metaphor as well... The screen caps and the YouTube site helped me re-live a great film noir. One of my favorite plot revelations? "He had followed her."
Thanxx guys!

You mean, what a dame.
-
MissGoddess. How can you say that about Parris Mitchell? Gotta love that Bob.

Ahhhhhhh Ava. I, too, saw "The Barefoot Contessa" Saturday afternoon. Let's face it, Ava's the most feral looking woman in the movies. The pheromones just pour out of her and drench the movie viewer. Perhaps they said she was one of the most beautiful...Tierney is certainly breath-taking but we all know who the MOST beautiful actress is...She could stop a clock, stop time, stop the earth's rotation. You know who I'm talking about. (And it ain't Dame May Whitty).
But I come not to bury Ava but to praise her. She's got that indefinable something!
-
Well I wouldn't fight her.....she's a saint!

Yeah, I love Ingrid Bergman. Why? D'ya wanna make sumthin' of it?!!! C'mon, let's step outside.
Oh...wait.
Whew! Sorry. I get defensive where Ingrid Bergman is concerned. For some reason, she breaks my heart. I wanna protect her. I have a difficult time watching her being tortured in "Notorious" and "Gaslight." Save her Cary, ya big lug! (I can hear her whispering now to Cary Grant: "Oh Dev, Dev." ) If I were Rick, I never would have let her fly away with Victor Laszlo. (Yep, I'm a hill o' beans and I'm selfish that way).
About two years ago (here in NYC) the Scandanavia House had an Ingrid Bergman exhibit; photographs, letters, home movies (of her as a CHILD) were displayed. There was a picture of her that Gordon Parks took that just made my heart melt. It was the last shot of hers I saw before leaving the Museum.
I love Ingrid Bergman.

My five favorite actors are:
(1.) Gable
(2.) Cary Grant
(3.) Kirk Douglas
(4.) Tyrone Power
(5.) Bogart.
Why do you love Ray Milland?
-
"With her hair styled that way, the lovely Katherine Heigl reminded me of Marjorie Reynolds in Holiday Inn!"
Wow...what a lovely blast from the past. I loved her in "The Life of Riley."

'kay.

Tell the truth and shame the Devil!!!

James Cagney As Robin Hood?
in General Discussions
Posted
Why we gotta put Cagney in Sherwood Forest when he belongs on 52nd Street and Sixth Avenue jauntily strolling down the street, dodging traffic, tipping his straw hat to the ladies and buying drinks for the boys?
Or is that tipping his hat to the boys and buying drinks for the ladies? (And if it's THAT you can't do that in Sherwood Forest).
He'd scare the animals.
