  1. "Paulette Goddard, as with the others on my list, seems to drag the film down and doesn't elicit any warmth onto the screen in my humble opinion."

Wow! How 'bout in "The Women"? Have you seen her in that film.? She was pretty fun, spunky, sassy and sexy. ("Where I spit, no grass grows ever?") Your opinion is not humble. Your opinion is your opinion and I respect that. But are you sure about Paulette Goddard???

  2. I dunno if I'm a wise Maven...but I know I can be a weisenheimer.

Lz...I think you hit it on the head. I think Vivien wanted to be close to Olivier..so she hit the stage. Gosh, the camera dollying in for that close-up of her in a red dress when she joins Melly's party...the camera certainly loved her.

I wonder what other actresses, who were successful in 1939, thought when they saw "Gone With the Wind"??

  3. "I think Hilary Swank deserved her win for MILLION DOLLAR BABY, but I think Annette Bening should have won for AMERICAN BEAUTY over Swank for the stunty BOYS DON'T CRY."

Stunty?? I was absolutely and utterly convinced she was a dude. I think Annette Bening is a marvelous actress. I'm hoping she gets a role worthy of her talent.

  4. Utz's Honey B-B-Q chips, Pina Colada, Kool-Aid and Vanilla Haagen-Dazs ice cream. I'll be sitting alone in my darkened room...and rooting for Julie Christie and Daniel Day-Lewis.

  5. Wow Metropolis...glass half-full man. Half-full. The Oscars do get it wrong (it's only human, I guess). D'ya suppose they opt for the feel-good ticket rather than the 'what it is' ticket??

Reading over the thread..I have to concur that I think Oscar got it right when they gave the awards to:

    Hilary Swank.........."Boys Don't Cry."

    Susan Hayward....."I Want to Live"

Forrest Whitaker...."The Last King of Scotland"

    Ben Kingsley........."Ghandi"

    Gable....................."Gone with the Wind"

    and

    many others.

I loved Ellen Burstyn in "Resurrection." That was a great movie. Her helping the little cancer-stricken boy at the end was very touching.

Say, who do you guys think is the best BEST ACTOR winner...and bestBEST ACTRESS winner. You know, a best of the best?

Oh as for Gable, I know he didn't win...but he should have. At least they got it right with VIVIEN LEIGH.
