I did not know that about her experience in "Dr. Zhivago." I guess Rod was no ladies man. How he EVER got Claire Bloom is a true mystery to me. I did think him a powerful actor though. Another mystery is why he didn't receive an Academy Award for "The Pawnbroker."
She did a wonderfully understated performance, but the whole film was quiet understatement becuz it was foreign. Picture an American film like this...there'd be CRAZY all over the place. Gordon Pinsent played Pres. Kennedy in a film I believe (or Kennedy-type), and a Police Captain in "Blacula." (Yeah, I had to get that in).
Again, I'm really rooting for Christie on Sunday. C'mon people...are there NO other Julie Christie fans on board here? Don't let Lara languish on the TCM Message Board!

Let's make that glass half-full and say very good. I've never seen this film though. I've always liked her: "From the Ter-race" "The Three Faces of Eve" "The Long Hot Summer" "Rachel, Rachel," among other performances. Like Eva Marie Saint, not hot and flashy, but low...simmering. We can get the pyrotechnics from others.
I'm a fan.
(Though in "On The Waterfront" waiting for Brando to break down her door, I thought Eva Marie was purty hot).

HA!! We'll need different lawyers. That movie didn't do so well. What's the verdict on getting any young Philadelphians? Find out if Paul Newman is available. I think we have a case.

You know...if the TCM Convention does go full throttle, I hope we have guests who are in the business...in the know, guests we can learn from and NOT average joes esoterically pontificating and spell checking (unless it's spellchecking name tags) and asking question after question after question after question after...

Hi G-Man. Instead of preparing my financial statements for an interview I have tomorrow with a mortgage broker...I am here on-line perusing the TCM Message Board. Crazy, huh?
I have never seen "Goodbye Mr. Chips" and am probably not being fair by not seeing every single Best Actor performance to be able to judge. But hey...who can be objective where movies are concerned.
You're right...it is conventional wisdom that Gable didn't win becuz he basically played himself. And I guess the Academy is always been impressed with buttons and bows and bells and whistles and fake noses and weight gain and such. At least he won for "It Happened One Night" (but for the life of me I can't figure out why though...) but he gave the performance of his life in "Gone With the Wind."

Aaaah yes, the exquisitely beautiful JEAN SIMMONS. She was in "Spartacus."
-
"Bob & Carrie & Rose & Molly" - out-takes from three years of "The Essentials".
(I still want to know what was "so over-rated".)
Please sign me up for this panel. You're going to have a lot of takers for any one of your panels. :-)

If you get a patent for having been a human remote control...a whole bunch of us baby boomer kids can finally get paid.

Looking at the picture of Scarlett and Rhett on the bridge in "GWTW" just reminds me of how robbed Gable was of an Academy Award. He was sweet
& tender here, cried at the death of his daughter,
been a ladies' man...
I just don't get it.

Jennifer Jones was beautiful. Those pictures below are worth a thousand words. Someone more eloquent than I can express it.
Poor Robert Walker. I liked him especially in "The Clock" and, of course..."Strangers on a Train."
-
JENNIFER JONES rules. I love Jennifer Jones. (I'm sure Robert Walker blew his brains out having lost her to Selznick). I thought she was very sexy in that lust-in-the-dust oater, "Duel in the Sun." But what role of hers really breaks my heart is "Love Letters." When she tries to retrieve the letters tossed in a fireplace, that just about killed me. Eighty-nine. Geez! God bless her!!

"I like Cronyn in the early 70's movie Conrack, with Jon Voight. His character is a school superintendent who has had his own (unfortunately racist) way for so long that he can't budge to allow a new teacher to change the status quo. A smilingly malevolent character."
Wonderfully put. I remember "Conrack" but I've never seen it.

Mickee...Cinemajestic...you'll both be getting your wish: "Ordinary People" will be on Friday @ 10:00PM and "On the Waterfront" will be aired Thursday morning at 5:00AM. Get your TiVO ready.

Me personally (from the peanut gallery...) I would like to see panels. Panels of celebrities discussing movies. Look, nobody wants to hear from us plain Joes even though some of us seem to tout how much they know about movies. We want to see the old stars come out and talk of their experiences. Maybe we in the audience can ask questions.
Okay...so West Coast, panels, and movies.
When do we start?

Fred, what makes you think Hedy is NOT Delilah.

;-) Nah, they won't. They can't break into our clique.

Now that intro doesn't ring a bell. But if ya find it...I'll save it.
Now about "Gone With the Wind"...

Sublimely wonderful...this so aptly describes the lovely LAURA LINNEY. But NOT this year. Again...I'm rooting for Julie Christie.
And FF, though not warranted on artistic merit it is grand fun and I hope you watch.
Amy Ryan was fantastic. Good luck to her as well.

SCSU...I HAVE YOU NO HEART!!! HAVE YOU NO MERCY!!! HOW DARE YOU!!!
Your citing the YouTube presentations of old tv movie intros brought me to tears and had good memories unexpectedly flooding back.
It was GREAT to see those intros again and immediately brought me back to running home from school and after "The Match Game" watch those old movies (while eating jelly and cream cheese sandwiches). Doesn't sound very appetizing now..but those movies. Oh boy those movies. My first intros to classic films, good or bad A or B pix. Thank you thank you.
Keep 'em coming even if I do cry. Got any cream cheese anybody??

Princess....Ramsey (and you) look very fetching! Thanxx for the explanation. I thought you were gonna tell me "only her hairdresser knows for sure." ;-)

Cronyn was pretty intimidating as the attorney in "THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE." Great actor. Nerdy in "Shadow of A Doubt." Venomous in "Brute Force."

You make a good point Arturo in that sometimes actors are not chosen becuz of the baggage they may bring to a character. A director might want to cast an unknown so as to give the audience a clean slate to go with.
Therefore I, as an unknown, am offering up my services for any directors out there...oh. This is not an audition. Oh well...I'm a big fan of Jeanne Crain (seven kids I believe) and have always enjoyed her in movies.
Quiet, understated...we don't always need the pyrotechnics of a Bette or Joan or the blindingly good looks of a Hayworth or Gardner. I think Jeanne Crain's one of the prettiest girls that came out of Hollywood to boot. Like Teresa Wright, a quiet beauty. Thanxx for your information.
