  1. Darn it, I missed the SAG Awards. Didn't she take the lesson from Helen Mirren. Don't wear a hat and look frumpy. You say Julie dyed her hair? What color. Anyone out there got a pix of Ms. Christie from the SAG show?

I'm still rooting for her. I don't care what she wears. Her performance was great. Gotta she Cotillard's film next.

  2. Some may think it's sweet & saccharine but I thought the movie was wonderful. I love the by-play between the sisters (LOVE Priscilla Lane), love them each falling for the adorable Jeffrey Lynn, love the scene where they're all out picnicking and Lynn makes his feelings known to Priscilla. John Garfield gives the film the gravity to keep it from being too sugary.

I hope you get to see it. (Oh...and if you get a chance on Wednesday, check out Eddie G. in "Five Star Final." It's a film that could've been made today what with the vulture mentality of the hounds of the paparazzi).

  3. Webestang...you stole my hot Asian. I also love Michelle Yeoh and DSC, d'ya remember Mie Hama in "You Only Live Twice" and "What's Up Tiger Lily?"?

Though the thread's title sounds like a Personal Ad in the Village Voice, I must admit that Vivian Wu,Gong Li and the exquisite JOAN CHEN top the list. She's very very beautiful. And when I saw "Three Days of the Condor" a coupla weeks ago on TCM (yep a film that wasn't made in the 1940's classic-era), there's was another beauty: Tina Chen.

But let's remember the grandmamama of them all ANNA MAY WONG.

If only all these ladies were given real cinematic opportunities and not just...aw, you know what I mean.

  4. In the tenth grade, we took a class trip to see the movie "Camelot." There's where I saw Redgrave (even though I was totally besotted with Franco Nero) for the first time. I thought she was beautiful and sexy. I too saw "Julia" and went to see her on Broadway in "Vita & Virginia." I was happy to see her in "Atonement" and was just baffled at how she's aged, when it seems like it was just yesterday (1967) when I saw "Camelot" and I was fifteen. I think she was one of the great actresses of the modern-day along with Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, Glenn Close and Angela Bassett (if they'd only give her a real chance).

  5. Always've been a big Mickey Rooney fan. He was an amazing performer in comedy, drama, or musical. I love his "Andy Hardy Gets Spring Fever" when he is hurt by being rejected by his drama teacher. He broke my heart when he uses his play's lines to tell off his teacher. (...And the actress who played her was an absolute dreamboat. Move over Miss Crabtree). In "The Human Comedy" when he says if his brother is killed "I'll spit at the world. I'll hate it forever," was very believable. He really could do anything.

But to hop on the Doris Day bandwagon below...I sincerely hope that the Academy this year or next year the latest, honors the contributions of Doris Day to American movies. Are they embarassed by her success? Embarassed by the fact that they did use to like her at one time? What...it's not cool to like her; unhip, perhaps?!

I just saw "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" the other nite, and she was the most sexy mom I've seen. She had the tomboy persona to be able to hang with a roomful of male testerone (Niven included) and the fecundity to produce four sons. (Don't all men want sons???) Then she was sexy as all get out when she goes to dinner with Niven. The way she looked up at him at one point during dinner was like "WoW!" She could play over the top (in that hoakey play Niven wrote) or be dramatic when she expresses disappointment in how mean Niven's turned as critic. And her comedy timing with three child actors (Yo! a shout-out to "My Three Sons") was impeccable. She was so very natural in this movie. She seemed to be talking and NOT acting. (By the by...Margaret Lindsay had a small scene as the party hostess and it was great seeing her...albeit fleetingly)!

Day played with the greats: Gable, Grant, Lemmon, Kirk, Ginger Rogers, Cagney for chrissakes! And might I add held her own. She should have played opposite the Mick too. (Sorry to Bogart Mickey's thread for Doris, Chip). Sang, comedy, drama, musical, danced...geez!

I hope she's honored. It will be a travesty if she's not. The posthumous thing just doesn't work for me.

  6. Who or what can explain something like this. Did she **** someone off? Did times change? Did public tastes change for those coming up behind her? This should be a lesson for those in films today...but those today don't really remember the great Mae Clarke, do they?

Why does one succeed and another fail?

  7. "Let's make it a senior citizen cast. Pair Newman and Redford for one last film ... I'll let you cast the women."

I don't think it'll sell, but okay I'll bite: Candice Bergen and Jacqueline Bissett. Hotties, still.

I'm still going for Charlize Theron. A classic beauty a la Grace Kelly, but looks like she could be down to earth. (Rebecca Romijn?)

    C'mon...somebody get me an agent!!!

  8. She was very different in "Lady Killer" than she was in "Public Enemy." No sob siter here, clinging. Nope she's quite vivacious. How 'bout when Cagney dragged her caveman style (by the hair) and threw her out of his hotel room; then her suitcase after her. She's on her romp and says "Son of--" and we fade out. WoW!

But I must say it is MARGARET LINDSAY for me all the way. She did a couple of films with Cagney shown during his Star of the Month. Her dark hair and alto voice; there's something about her.

But back to your girl Mae...
