"A Portrait of Jennie" is on tonight and is one of my favorites (as is "The Lake House"). Some good films named below by you folks. I love the exploration of time travel in movies. Say, how about Denzel Washington's recent film "Deja-Vu"?? Time travel...he tries to save a girl. (You know they'll hook up after the movie ends).
Love the time travel theme. Currently exploring that theme myself in a film I am writing.
Jennifer Jones breaks my heart in everything I see her in. Hey, didja ever see her with Joseph Cotten in "Love Letters"?? Pass me the Kleenex please.

Respect for the dead??? Ha!! It's like the lions vs. the Christians. Vultures is too good a description for the paparazzi.

This is an idea that I have wanted to work on for many years, so I'm taking a chance sharing it with you good people. Aw heck...run with it, run with it.
I would love to see a remake of the remake of "Libeled Lady." "Easy to Wed" was pretty good in my book. But I could see that being re-done and updated to take into account the gossip rags of today that print lies and get sued.
Libeled Lady-Easy to Wed- Remake 2008
Wm. Powell - Van Johnson- Geo. Clooney
S. Tracy - Keenan Wynn- Vince Vaughn
HARLOW - Lucille Ball - Eva Mendes
Myrna Loy-Esther Williams-Charlize Theron
and Brian Dennehy has the modern-day father of our libeled heiress.
I can really see it: A gossip-mongering rag prints a lie about an heiress and is sued.
The editor gets his best reporter to marry his fiancee, then wine and dine the libeled heiress and sue HER for...well you know the story.
Whaddya think? It'll serve me right if you run with it. I should've done this years ago.

Again your eloquence is wonderful. You totally expressed it talking of feeding that monster. It might be a Catch-22 for folks. I say again look at the metamorphosis on the reporting of Heath Ledger's death. First sadness and incredulity; then reports of drug abuse...now a grainy video of Ledger in a party room with people doing drugs. Look how Britney has been going downhill and the paparazzi greasing the slope with taunts that she reacts to and then they get THAT on tape.
I know this is a thread about Tom Cruise, but I think he's just too easy a target. Thanxxx for your response.
You ought to catch Woody Allen's "Cassandra's Dream."

"...i would have loved you with a FIRE that would have made all other loves feel like ICE. i would have gone to egypt, gone anywhere, lived only for YOU..."
Can you imagine saying those words to someone, or anyone saying that to YOU? And yet Samson loved another girl. Love Mature. And Hedy...she is beyond beyond beautiful...but there's a whole thread for her extolling her beauty.

"Instead of doing MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 127, he should also maybe do a Woody Allen movie, and some indie stuff, or is he too far gone as a "movie star" to attempt these?"
I think you hit the Scientologist (nail) on the head with that comment Bronxgirl. I think a lot of celebrities suffer from that. I think of Rocky once telling Adrienne, "I don't wanna lose what I got!" in one of the "Rocky" movies. Then again Tom, Brad and others maybe in a trap; their celebrity is SOOOOOOO big, no one would believe them in roles. Morris maybe "The Heiress" but in a Woody Allen movie?? And I sort of recant that becuz Woody's no longer doing his upper East Side Jewish thaaang.
They may be trapped. A gilded cage is a cage nonetheless.
(Psst! Tell me who DO you get excited about seeing his/her films? A coupla examples please).

dsc...
Geez, what a set-up! Metropolis, I feel your passion.

Okay okay...more than one letter. (Thanx for the correction). I saw that in the theatre and enjoyed it. I've always enjoyed Jamie Lee's kind of tomboyish persona, even when she's showing off her gams.
(Yeah...I saw "Terror Train" the other nite and liked it too. Whaddya want from me?)
-
Flynn...it's not enough that these actors died young or tragically...you're holding them to the standard of "greatness" too. I know that's what the thread's title is but dude, have a heart. Compassion, sheesh!

"...if you're going to despise Christina, make sure you keep the axe good and sharp for Faye Dunaway. Her brilliantly "over the top" portrayal of Ms. Crawford probably went further than the book in keeping this particular conception of Joan alive. Ms. Dunaway happens to be my favorite actress of her generation..."
I was a big fan of Dunaway's. "Bonnie & Clyde" "The Thomas Crown Affair" "Three Days of the Condor" "Network" (which'll be aired this Friday, I believe and she was brilliant in it...but then again it was a bitingly sharp movie). I think Dunaway's career ended with her playing Joan Crawford. I don't know that the community ever took her seriously after that film. ("SuperGirl"?) She might still be working (not now, though) but I really do believe appearing in "Mommie Dearest" ended her career.
Sorry about you as a kid. I hope all's well and healed now. Whew! That had to be tough.

Smokey eyes, luscious mouth. WoW!!! Thanxxx Jack.

Guess you have to be 16...I'm thirty years younger than my parents and saw all their "old" movies ("King Kong" "The Maltese Falcon" "Libeled Lady" Lon Chaney, Rudolph Valentino. Re-makes, she-makes! Bah!!
-
I enjoyed "The Lake House" though I don't think it was well-received by the critics. "Love Letter" is this a re-make of the Jennifer Jones/Joseph Cotten classic? I think Jamie Lee Curtis did a movie with James Keach and Amy Madigan by the same title.
Can anyone else help?

I was moreso making a comment on the thread Silentfan. I have no problem with you.
-
I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree with ya. I tried to watch it but just did about fifteen minutes; and I love Doris Day. Saw the last five minutes and must say I did enjoy Day & Sinatra sharing a tune.
No, give me the sisters Lane: Priscilla, Lola, Rosemary and Gale (Page). And I'll take my Oscar-winners doing the Mambo dance of death.

Thanxxx for the calendar on one of the suavest actors ever to hit the silver screen. He could do drama and comedy. And nobody wore a suit like him. Beau Brummel would be jealous. Thanx again Ms. Goddess.
-
"...does anyone notice a facial resemblence between Conan O'Brien and Meryl Streep?"
Nah...I think Streep and actress Natasha McElhone look like sisters.
-
Yikes!! I never took up the habit, but I've got to admit, I always thought it looked cool.

"Thirty days hath September...but at least February is short."
I scoped the schedule to see what all the fuss was about. Oh boy! Some folks see the glass half empty, some see the glass half full. I plan to guzzle down the good full half I see for February; films like "Robin Hood" "Mogambo" "Se7en" "Five Easy Pieces" "Five Star Final" (excellent!) "Body & Soul" the blonde bombshell's "Libeled Lady" "The Maltese Falcon" "...Sierra Madre" HITCHCOCK ("Vertigo" is on 2/6/08)
Grant & Dunne's trilogy, "GWTW" "Champion" Lombard's last film and many many more films that are from the classic era and modern day.
(Psst! Kubrick...no name calling. You're gonna get in trouble).
Folks watch what you want and change the channel for stuff you don't want to see. I'm easy (ooops! Award winning song from "Nashville." Yeah, I know it's no "Moon River" but at least it ain't "Shaft").
Shut yo' mouth!

Okay okay...smoking is bad for your health.

Go back to smoking and give this thread up.

Uh-oh, holy crap!!! You mean this wasn't my original idea?? Sheeeeeet. Okay, well let me piggy back on Mr. Weingarten's suggestion:
Brosnan as William Powell's character and George Clooney as the manic editor, but I still go with Charlize Theron; someone looking like an heiress but with a brain in her head. If it's done with Brosnan, the whole cast must be aged older. Do you have any casting ideas?
