  1. Ya gotta love your Mom. Cute. What up Bronxie?! - ?I've never seen Robert Stack unglued in a movie and heavens, I don't want to! That would be truly frightening. Someone you think is so even-tempered and then wham! instant personality change.? Guess I?ve seen the same Stack o? films over and over again. Have you ever seen ?Written on the Wind? Bronxie? When he?s told he can?t have kids and starts drinkin? and accusin? and slappin? Bacall around, he?s pretty unhinged. Did a good job in this, IMHO. ?Tammy Marihugh. a long way from the Ile de France: (although she does look like Brigitte Bardot here)? ?You?re just as hard to land as the Ile de France I never had a chance This is a fine Rohhhhmance.? Fred Astaire-to-Ginger Rogers in....one of their movies. G?Morning Miss G. - ?However, I don't find Robert Young attractive at all, so she loses me there! Good actor and nice guy, but doesn't make me flutter.? I?d have to agree with you there. Reliable, dependable but...no flutter. Surprising how many flutterless actors there were in classic films. I'd have to put Melvyn Douglas and Ralph Bellamy on that list. I appreciate their place in the history of things...but sometimes a girl wants a good flutter.
  2. Wow. He and Gene Barry look like they were the best dressers in Hollywood. Nice. Clean. And he wants to father your child. Solo.
  3. Giving a shout-out...and a reminder to all you fans of Oooooooooomph!! Tomorrow is ANN SHERIDAN day. I am looking forward to seeing these films in particular. 4. Alright hangman...give. Where can we get these gems? I'd love to see "THE GUILTY."
  5. I enjoyed "Naked City." Loved the procedural aspect of the story's unfolding, the olde New York locations, Howard Duff..Barry Fitzgerald and the big guy, sweaty, barrel-chested Ted DeCorsia doing those calisthenics. Beautiful Dorothy Hart. How 'bout the mother who didn't care anything about her daughter until she identified her in the morgue... I was totally in love with Don Taylor. :x :x IN LOVE!! (Oooh, and with young Gene Reynolds too...but I digress). Was James Gregory a sort of love interest for Barbara Stanwyck's 'Victoria Barkley' on "The Big Valley"? He was his good ol' blustery self in "The Manchurian Candidate." Hmmm...Heinz 57, anyone? I wonder if anyone mistakes him for Dabbs Greer?
  6. I don't remember the movie very clearly, but I do see James Stacey in the film. (He was married to Connie Stevens and lost some limbs in a horrific motorcycle accident). Might be worth another look some time. With Dewhurst, don't be jealous, Jackay. I didn't talk to her or anything...I just saw her pass by me. The only time I saw her very frightened in the movies was in "When A Stranger Calls" which was a fantastic film. She was a great theatre actress.
  7. You won't believe me if I tell you I was thinking the same thing, Madame Cutter. LOL!!!
  8. > "The only thing I want looking at me at three in the morning is Captain Gregg. (and I would hope he tells me I shouldn't be ashamed of my figure)." Captain Queeg? Well...alright. But ya better have a lot of strawberries in your refrigerator.
  9. I dare not compete with a man on a horse, or a beautiful girl in a gorgeous gown. Or a beautiful gown on a gorgeous horse. (My poor imitation of Groucho Marx). So let me send you my simple CONGRATULATIONS on your landmark 5,000 posts. Can see your love of films and love for the Message Board!! Here's to many more posts from you Movieman. :-) ;-)
  10. A bunch of us saw "Something Wicked This Way Comes." I've always liked that title;as I LOVE the title "The Macomber Affair." Don't ask me why...I just love saying it. Unfortunately, neither one of those are Westerns. I saw Colleen Dewhurst once on Broadway and 43rd Street. Her auburn hair blazed in the sun. And she looked so tough and sexy. (Great voice, too!!) Gone too soon. "I had an Uncle Harold from Queens as well. Everyone called him Heshey. No one knows why. He looked like a 6 ft. Wally Cox. Six feet? Whew! That's a lot of Wally Cox. Awwwrighty I know I know...go to bed, C-Mave. Edited by: CineMaven on Aug 17, 2010 1:55 AM - after re-reading over my post, I thought I'd better add "Wally" as an adjective.
  11. "I don't understand how Ninochka could have been attracted to big-eared Melvyn as Leon. I just keep seeing her with Uncle Louie. 'Oh, Ninochka, Ninochka, it's not twelve o'clock, it's midnight!' Ninotchka: 'Okay, time for you to go to bed, Uncle Louie'." Oh my!!! Too funny Bronxie. (Write that book). I really did enjoy Melvyn in "HUD" and "BEING THERE." And his granddaughter (actress Ileana Douglas) is very good on this web series: "EASY TO ASSEMBLE." (http://www.easytoassemble.tv/episode_pilot.php) ...And to your Uncle Louie:
  12. Bronxgirl writes: "I lost my bet! Quintillus only got HALF-eaten by the tiger!" "That's no fight, he's still alive!" CineMaven writes: "OMG! OMG! You must write a book. Please. Write your ruminations on film. They're a riot. Really." JackFavell writes: "I second that! You are the only one who could make that jump to Roman Coliseum movies - but it's so wonderfully true!" Ya see Bronxie...it's unanimous. You MUST write a book and you must call it: "THE RUMINATIONS AND RUINATION OF CLASSIC FILMS" by the Bronxgirl of Boca Raton Unless they think it is an Yma Sumac movie...I can see your royalties pouring in. Start writing. Send us the first chapter by this weekend. Oooooh, I can't wait to read it.
  13. Nero: "I lost my bet! Quintillus only got HALF-eaten by the tiger!" Caligula: "That's no fight, he's still alive!" OMG! OMG! You must write a book. Please. Write your ruminations on film. They're a riot. Really. P.S.You might get Robbie from Audrey, but you'll never get him from Miss G.
  14. "Meg Ramsey!!! Calling Meg Ramsey!!!!" Salesman: "You mean the Takamine." Meg: "Gesundheit!"
  15. J.F., it's a mere Barnes & Noble ride away. I'm happy it was recommended to me. It's been a long time and some times when I sort of say..."Oooh boy a Western," I'm happy when I wind up saying: "Oooh boy, a Western!" Just takes me a little time to "saddle up."
  16. I just finished watching "THE PROFESSIONALS" a film I haven't seen probably since my family saw it in the theatres. I enjoyed it a lot. All four men: Lee Marvin (serious, commanding), Burt Lancaster (not overly flamboyant), Woody Strode (rock steady), Robert Ryan (sensitive) were great. I loved the way the story unfolded and how each man was introduced in the movie. Woody Strode rode with some of Hollywood's heavy hitters with Lancaster, Marvin and Robbie boy. He didn't have many lines, but he didn't recede into the background. He held his own. I liked how it questioned who is the good guy and who is the bad guy. What we see (at first) isn't necessarily what things are. At first I thought the preparation of the siege dragged on...but then I see that it didn't really drag on. It just played out like it had to play out with out a lot of cuts and montages. Preparation. I loved that the men were men; no little boys playing grown up. (Sorry Leo, Matt, Brad). MEN. Claudia Cardinale...she's gorgeous and strong and well...what can I say. You guys can fill in the blanks better than I can about her. But here is what Lee Marvin's character says about her: > "Certain women have a way of changing some boys into men. And some men back into boys." Action? Oh yeah. Tight direction...yep, Richard Brooks. (Hmmm, I think I've got to look into his work a little bit more). Cinematography...beautiful; the late great master, Conrad Hall. Plot...simple, tight: "my wife's been kidnapped and I want you to bring her back!" Freud in the West...nah, no big psychological whosits. Straight story telling for grownups. I'm no big western gal, but I'm sure glad I revisited "THE PROFESSIONALS." Thanx for reading my mini-ramble.
  17. I remember that ramble on "The Shanghai Gesture" Movieman. Yup, it must be seen to be believed (and you still might not believe it after you've seen it). It was one of the great Rambles on this Message Board, along with the one on Double G's "IN A LONELY PLACE." I'm glad she enjoyed "...HEAVEN." I think it's Tierney's best work. (But don't dis- count Poppi...) ;-) ?What about THE RACKET? Mitchum vs Robbie Not-The-Robot Ryan AND the incredibly sinister William Conrad. Ray Collins, too.? - < OLLIE T > Why not. Throw that in the mix too, man. Mitchum - Ryan...and my girl Lizabeth Scott is in it too. It?s a win-win situation all ?round if you ask me. Ehhh, but who?s askin?. ?I remember watching 'The Last Voyage' a few years back. I love movies set on ships and all the better if the ship is sinking, but I remember this as a bit tedious...Watch the film for Woody, I'll watch for Dorothy Malone. Also, George Saunders plays the captain.? - < MOLO > Sinking ships Mo?? Wow! I forgot about George Sanders. As for Dorothy Malone...aaaaah, back together again with her ?Tarnished Angel? ?Written on the Wind? costar, Robert Stack. Yeah, she?s got nuthin? to do but be tugged on by Woody Strode. It?s a win-win situation all ?round if you ask me. But ehhh, who?s askin?.
  18. It's all you, Jackaaaaaay. Othello, Lear...Kings & Angels? Ha! I just followed your lead is all.
  19. By the by, if any of you gals are interested, Woody Strode will appear in Monday night's screening of "THE LAST VOYAGE" at 11:30pm starring Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone. "An ocean liner starts sinking after an engine explosion and the passengers struggle to rescue each other before the ship goes under." If I'm not mistaken, his shirt might have to come off in this film to save Dorothy Malone. Well it's hot on a sinking ship. I'm just sayin'.
  20. SONNET #29 ...Haply I think on thee, and then my state, Like to the lark at break of day arising From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate; For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings That then I scorn to change my state with kings. Robert Ryan :x We see and read many names on many lists before his name appears. But isn't he really one of the underrated giants of Hollywood.
  21. (Don?t forget Una Merkel?s voice, Ollie). BTW, I?d say Spring Byington as Marmee in ?Little Women? was a film outside her normal screen persona. She?s not fluttery at all in this film. (If only someone would clip the wings of Billie Burke)... ?Fire Island, eh? Listen - if I see ONE news report about radioactive monsters from prehistoric times rising up, I'll know it's ALL BECAUSE OF YOU. Teeny weeny itsy bitsy... darned beauties - they're always stirrin' up things!? HA!!! I spared the eyesight of man, woman and beast alike, by covering up from head-to-toe. (Nah, I had a bathing suit on, but nobody died...and nobody got hurt). But 150% proof alcohol will knock the radioactivity out of any monster from the deep that was in the bay this weekend. Now if you really want to help an old Maven out (besides sending me the hair of the dog that bit me), how ?bout hooking me up with ?Where The Sidewalk Ends??? The last thing I saw before walking to the beach showed Dana in a might pretty pickle: a dissolve from night-to-day, tons of cigarette butts in Dana?s ashtray and his hair all mussed up. Yeah, ?Where the Sidewalk Ends? please. Dana makes a great bad guy. (Not as cruel as Robbie Ryan in ?On Dangerous Ground? but I certainly believed he could be sadistic). ?I have made an effort to avoid that ?2012? thing so far (I remember rolling my eyes at it when it came out last year) But who knows... I might give it a try sometime just to see all the cool mayhem and destruction movie magic stuff... (But gee... I am still trying to shake that whole Danny as president thing.. ha.)? - << Rohanaka >> Hi there Ro. The mayhem and destruction was quite a roller coaster ride. See it for that and believe NOTHING ELSE!!! I?ll take Danny Glover over Tiny Lister as President. (Whose Tiny? Girl, you don?t even wanna know). As for voices...they really don?t even make voices the way they used to, do they? ?Carolann watched ?Leave Her To Heaven? with me last night...? Movieman, was this the first time your wife had seen ?Leave Her to Heaven?? Did you catch ?The Shanghai Gesture??
  22. ?I've never seen Jason Robards warm and gentle, so this will be quite an experience for me.? - << Bronxgirl >> I loved his father in ?ISLE OF THE DEAD.? Special K & Uncle Louie from Queens & lusting after Ralph Bellamy??? Girl, you are killing me. "You and CineMaven should watch 'The Professionals.' I think you might find it entertaining, even though it's a real 'action' western. There is still camaraderie and friendship and Robbie is playing another of his 'sweetie' roles (he cares gently for horses, just like Ben...it's a real Ben Johnson role, actually)." - << Miss Goddess >> Before I left for Fire Island Friday afternoon, I went to Barnes and Noble and bought ?THE PROFESSIONALS? for my train ride back into the city. As I was riding the LIRR back into the city, I missed my stop at Jamaica b?cuz I was watching explosives go off, Mexicans whooping and hollering and drinking Tequila, Woody shooting TNT-tinged arrows, and Burt and Lee ?rescuing? a reluctant, and gorgeous Claudia Cardinale. Missing my stop added forty-five minutes to my ride back to Brooklyn. As annoyed as I was with myself (a tad chilly out there on those open air stations)...honestly, it was worth it. I couldn?t pull myself away from the action. Now I?m home safe, sound and tired from a weekend on the beach, but I hope to finish ?THE PROFESSIONALS? later on tonite or tomorrow. Hmmm...Lee Marvin is soooooooooo comman- ding. He?s under-stated and self-assured and respectful of his enemy?s smarts. Love his voice and that grey hair. He's a man to have on your side. (And Woody holds his own opposite four top Hollywood stars. He doesn?t disappear into the woodwork). Oh don?t worry...I?m checking out your Robbie too, Miss G.
  23. No matter what life had in store for our lovely double G, no matter what fate awaited her...no one could take away the fact that she won an Academy Award. I'm bringing up the rear here MadHat. So many many happy returns of the day to you. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOLO.
  24. And besides...who can resist five gorgeous hunks of sweaty, dirty, hard riding men on horseback who...oh crap! Wrong thread. See you over in the Western rambles where Claudia Cardinale's waiting. She's looking pretty sweaty herself.
