Message Board Code of Conduct
fxreyman replied to MissGoddess's topic in PROBLEMS with the Message Boards
So what are you guys trying to do here anyhow? It does not take almost six months to sort this out, or does it?? Makes me wonder if this is just another typical corporate ploy to drag something out until no one talks about it anymore. How shameful if that is the real reason why nothing has been mentioned for months. What do you administrators and your bosses think of us anyhow??? You must think we are just a bunch of blathering idiots, right? Well you are wrong. Many of us truly enjoy telling each other stories and opinions of the movies. But what we can not stand or care for is the continued abuse of certain policies that have become obsolete or have been totally ignored simply (so it would seem) to increase the amount of posters on this message board. With the continued allowance of banned posters who keep coming back for additional postings being allowed, I wonder if you folks who run this message board really care what happens at all??? Message edited by Fxreyman after an eleven hour day at work. -
Didn?t you enjoy the Watergate hearings? Wouldn?t you like to see open House Committee hearings investigating the George Bush family?s connections with the Saudi government and the Bin Laden family, and broadcast on CSPAN? I certainly would. Okay Fred, now lets be fair....... I would like to see open hearings on the following: The deals the dems all made to get ObamaCare passed earlier this year. These hearings were also SUPPOSED to have been aired on CSPAN. And while we at it, how about a hearing on whether or not Mr. Obama is really an American citizen? I would really like to know why he has NOT provided the actual documents to prove otherwise. At least Sen. John McCain came out with the truth: He was born at the Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone which at the time was under United States control at the time (1936).

I agree with you on this one Frank. I am a subscriber to NetFlix. And for really only three reasons: 1. Costs 2. Convenience 3. To watch currently released films so I do not have to go and pay whatever ridiculous $$$ it costs now at the theater. I am also continuing to purchase DVDs when I see a good deal. Because I am a member at Columbia House, every now and again I will make a decent purchase. Since last December I have made two additional purchases from them. And occasionally I will purchase from Wal-mart and Barnes and Noble. I also buy via the internet (i-tunes) and download them on my computer to watch. I am certain that the future will always contain DVDs or something like them and the internet will eventually take over the entertainment business. But that is still a ways off. So, I will be content to purchase a certain amount of films per year form non-internet vendors and have the discs all to myself. The one thing I like about purchasing DVDs is the fact that they come jam-packed with lots of goodies. Things you'd never be able to purchase and download via i-tunes. And because I still own quite a few VHS tapes (139) which I am trying to replace with DVDs, I do not mind waiting to see if something I have on VHS will eventually be added to a DVD. If it doesn't then I will just have to be content with my VHS. My breakdown of films I have on VHS is as follows: 1930's: 13 1940's: 19 1950's: 14 1960's: 6 1970's: 22 1980's: 28 1990's: 35 2000's: 2 As you know Frank, I started to purchase quite a few movies back in the 90's. That is when I started in earnest my collection. I think I had well over 500 VHS movies at the height, just before DVD came on the scene. That is why I have many more films on VHS from the 90's than from any other decade. And someone once asked me why I do not invest in a DVD-R. The main reason is that I have decided to make my investment in DVD purchases and I am not interested in recording. Even if that means I miss out on some genuine films. You are always going to find some people willing to go out and get a DVD-R, but I will not. That would be just a waste on $$$ to me at this stage. Since last December I have been able to find many DVDs to help with the replacement of my older VHS tapes. The movies are out there, you just have to look for them. These are the ones I was able to locate: The African Queen 1951 Ben-Hur 1959 A Star is Born 1954 Sunset Blvd. 1950 The Ten Commandments 1956 Doctor Zhivago 1965 Goldfinger 1964 Psycho 1960 Oklahoma! 1955 Rear Window 1954 Rebel Without a Cause 1955 South Pacific 1958 It Happened One Night 1934 Mr. Smith Goes to Washington 1939 Sahara 1943 Stalag 17 1953 Treasure of the Sierra Madre 1948 Vertigo 1958 The Good Earth 1937 The Bad and the Beautiful 1952 Julius Caesar 1953 So as you can see, if you do some searching, you too can find for the most time the film you want on DVD. See you around. Fxreyman Edited by: fxreyman on Sep 22, 2010 11:30 PM Edited by: fxreyman on Sep 22, 2010 11:31 PM Edited by: fxreyman on Sep 22, 2010 11:32 PM

Quite possibly this might be just too simplistic..... But did you ever think of renting the film from Net-Flix, or maybe your local library, or Blockbuster (at least while their still in business), or any other renting choices? If you lived near me, I'd loan you out my dvd of it.

Wow! You know that you are "only" 6,022 feet away from becoming the tallest mountain of a poster here on these boards! Congrats on cracking the 23,000 foot barrier!!!!

I am not advocating that kind of sign up. Have you ever been to The Silver Screen Oasis? If you want to sign up there, they take a few days to check you out. They do not charge anything. I do not know for sure what they do, but my guess is that they try to establish what type of internet connections you may use and whether or not you are who you say you are. Also I think they might also check out what other message boards you have written in, like here. Many of the old-timers from this message board are also members there, including me. I am sure that there is someway for someone in the know at this website to try and figure out a way to filter out any of the posters who have been banned but for lack of any website protection just keep coming back for more.
-
That is what happens when political correctness takes over.
-
No, they come back here and pretend to be someone else. That is the major problem with this message board. The powers that be don't seem to have a problem with banned members coming back as new user names. As far as IMDB is concerned, the only thing I use on that site is the listings of casts and other production facts and figures. Their top 250 is really just about all the young people who watch Shawshank Redemption over and over again and keep voting it as their number one film of all time. I like Shawshank, but it is no where near my top 200 films.

Emma Thompson: 'Audrey Hepburn couldn't act'
fxreyman replied to edonline's topic in General Discussions
Well, if you really think Thompson is some sort of a hack then maybe you should do some homework on her. IMHO I think she is one of the finest actresses of all time. Her range is quite extraordinary considering she started out in comedy with the Cambridge Footlights, then went on to have a somewhat mixed television period of performances, but then started to show great success in the movies. This is what I wrote earlier in this thread: On Aug 9, 2010 at 11:14 PM Audrey Hepburn will always hold a special place in my heart as well as millions of other fans worldwide. I think what Thompson was saying was basically what she did not like about Hepburn's performance in MFL. Thompson IS an acting and screenwriting force now and for years to come. Thompson will probably also be nominated for additional Oscars before her career is over. Hepburn appeared in 28 films. Thompson has appeared in 32 films as of now, with another 4 on the way. Thompson has also appeared in over 15 television programs including the British mini series Fortunes of War. Hepburn was nominated for an Oscar 5 times, winning once for Best Actress in Roman Holiday. She received a posthumous Oscar in 1993 for her humanitarian work. She also won an American Emmy in 1993. Thompson has been nominated 5 times also. She won a Best Actress award for Howards End, then won a Best Screenplay Oscar for Sense and Sensibility. She is the only actor in the history of the Oscars to have won a Best Actress award and a Best Screenplay award. She too has won an American Emmy. And if you look at the quality of Hepburn's films, I can honestly say IMHO that she appeared in about 10 really good films during her career: Roman Holiday 1953 Sabrina 1954 Funny Face 1957 The Nun's Story 1960 Breakfast at Tiffany's 1961 The Children's Hour 1961 Charade 1963 Two for the Road 1967 Wait Until Dark 1967 Robin and Marion 1976 Thompson on the other hand IMHO has appeared in about 16 really good films so far into her career: Henry V 1989 Dead Again 1991 Howards End 1992 Much Ado About Nothing 1993 The Remains of the Day 1993 In the Name of the Father 1993 Carrington 1995 Sense and Sensibility 1995 The Winter Guest 1997 Primary Colors 1998 Love Actually 2003 Nanny McPhee 2005 Stranger Than Fiction 2006 Brideshead Revisited 2008 Last Chance Harvey 2008 An Education 2009 So before anyone starts calling Thompson out as being some hack or some minor actress, one might want to look at her track record so far. -
All really fine films have been mentioned so far. But my favorites of his are the following: Shampoo Heaven Can Wait Bulworth

Talk about political correctness....... This is what you wrote near the beginning of this thread: Posted: Aug 12, 2010 1:29 PM ? in response to: Kinokima Reply Thanks for creating this little spinoff. I am advocating for not only banning, but burning of particular films. Just because something is copyrighted and develops a cult following doesn't mean it should last into the ages. If I read this correctly you ARE in favor of banning and burning of particular films. This goes against all forms of free speech guaranteed to us by our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

And so what if history gets rewritten to remove the more offensive attitudes of the past. Why must we remember all the horrid details of our earlier years. Time to let go of some of the abuse of the past. So what if? You've got to be kidding right? There is only one way we move forward in life. We learn from the past and apply it toward the future. If ever there was a constant in the universe this is it. I guess we should just throw out everything we learned about the Holocaust, or maybe the genocide from Rwanda or what happened in the Balkans. McCarthyism in the fifties, the civil-rights issues from the sixties, the failure of the recent banking collapse. Yeah, I can see where you are going here. Yeah, you're right. Lets just get rid of all of history's bad attitudes and events from the past

Emma Thompson: 'Audrey Hepburn couldn't act'
fxreyman replied to edonline's topic in General Discussions
I agree with you. What really has been irritating me the most about this thread is the "supposed" belief that what Emma Thompson said in her interview is supposed to justify reasons that she may feel inadequate to play such a part that Ms. Hepburn played in the first place. For one thing Ms. Thompson is NOT playing this part. She is writing the screenplay. So enough already about how she may or may not feel regarding this part that Ms. Hepburn and Ms. Andrews played. The second thing is this: Why all the venom directed toward Ms. Thompson? She is surely allowed to have her own opinion. All of you who have decided to treat Ms. Thompson as Suspect Number One should rethink your comments. For one thing it borders on lunacy. How many times have any of you defended other actors, or have gone out of your way to describe how you feel about other actors. I was reading comments made by Jill Haworth when she appeared in the John Wayne/Kirk Douglas film In Harms Way. All she had to say about Wayne was negative comments. And yet I never have heard anyone take her to task for the things she said about Wayne. Although many here on the message boards have indicated that they do not like Wayne. Could have been his politics, or the way he treated his involvement in WWII, or the simple fact that they have no regard for his acting ability. Whatever. The simple fact of the matter is this: Emma Thompson made her comments the day on or slightly before/after she received her Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As others have stated it could have been her goal to publicize her upcoming movie remake and talk about how she did not like Ms. Hepburn's acting. I think she may have made her comments about Ms. Hepburn solely based on the fact that she WAS being interviewed and she may have been asked about her upcoming projects and she may have had the chance to say something which to many people here on the thread felt like a slap in the face toward Ms. Hepburn. Personally I think all of this is really as I said earlier, Much Ado About Nothing. Who really cares? Ms Hepburn has been dead for over 15 years. When does the statue of limitations run out so that someone can say a negative thing about someone? I mean, come on, get real. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Yo may not like her opinion, but as far as I am concerned, Ms. Thompson does not feel the slightest bit afraid for having an opinion. Oh, and by the way.... I like Audrey Hepburn. I just do not agree that she was a great actress. In fact, I am of the opinion that she was a fluff of an actress (in many of her roles) and that Ms. Thompson could act her / take her to the proverbial acting cleaners any day. -
Hi there Ollie, Actually the last non-nuclear carrier was decommissioned in 2009. That was the USS Kitty Hawk, CV-63. The JFK was decommissioned in 2007. The first nuclear carrier to be decommissioned will be the famous USS Enterprise in 2013, when she will be just over 52 years of age. Just a little info here: After the Enterprise decommissions there will be 10 active carriers in the US fleet, eight more than any other navy currently has in commission. A comparison..... During WWII, the US Navy had over 100 aircraft carriers in commission including over 25 large fleet carriers. Also, the US Navy operates 10 Amphibious Assault ships. These ships are smaller carriers and are intended to offload Marines and often fly mainly helicopters and vstol aircraft like the Harrier. The US Navy aircraft carriers currently in commission are: Enterprise, CVN-65 One ship class commissioned in 1961. 1,123 feet long, 94,000 tons fully loaded. 75+ aircraft. 8 nuclear reactors. Top speed: 30+ knots (35-40 mph). Over 5,000 crew. Nimitz, CVN-68 First ship of 10 unit class. Nimitz commissioned in 1975. 1,092 feet long. 106,000 tons fully loaded. 75 aircraft. 2 nuclear reactors. Top speed: 30 knots (35-40 mph). Over 5,000 crew. Eisenhower, CVN-69 Carl Vinson, CVN-70 Theodore Roosevelt, CVN-71 Abraham Lincoln, CVN-72 George Washington, CVN-73 John Stennis, CVN-74 Harry Truman, CVN-75 Ronald Reagan, CVN-76 George H.W. Bush, CVN-77 The newest class of super carriers have just recently been started with the keel being laid down for the Gerald R. Ford, CVN-78. A petition has been started to name the next carrier after the Ford, CVN-79, the Enterprise. If that happens, CVN-79 will be the ninth Enterprise that has served in the US Navy. The Amphibious ships in commission are: Nassau, LHA-4 Peleliu, LHA-5 Wasp, LHD-1 Essex, LHD-2 Kearsarge, LHD-3 Boxer, LHD-4 Bataan, LHD-5 Bonhomme Richard, LHD-6 Iwo Jima, LHD-7 Makin Island, LHD-8 Most of these ships are from between 820 and 850 feet long and displace between 40,000 and 46,000 tons. A mix type of aircraft are carried, with most having between 20 and 40 helicopters, including attack, assault and cargo copters. Some of the ships carry Harrier Vstol aircraft. And the newer ships are equipped with the new tilt-rotor aircraft called the Osprey. The next class of Amphibs have also been started with the recent keel being laid for the USS America, LHA-6. These ships will have in their aircraft inventory the newest fighter jet in the arsenal known as the F-35 Vstol.

If you like Claudia but do not want to sit through 165 excruciatingly long minutes then why not just watch 1966's The Professionals with Claudia and five he-men, Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Woody Strode, Robert Ryan and Jack Palance? Edited by: fxreyman on Aug 11, 2010 10:19 PM

Then why do you complain about Gone with the Wind's length?! Oh, I just tease about that. It's seventeen hours! That's why! I thought the pacing with Gone with the Wind was pretty good. I didn't think it was a "long" seventeen hours. Thank goodness 1927's Napoleon was NOT a western. I could just hear you start your complaining now.
-
Actually Ollie, it was the USS John F. Kennedy, CV-67. She was a conventionally powered aircraft carrier (oil-fired) not nuclear like the Nimitz class (CVN-68- 77) and the one and only Enterprise, CVN-65.

Emma Thompson: 'Audrey Hepburn couldn't act'

Totally agree with you. Cinderella was broadcast live on CBS on 31 March 1957 under the musical direction of Alfredo Antonini and attracted an estimated 107 million viewers. ( according to Wikipedia) 107 million viewers represented 62% of the American population at the time. I think many Americans knew by then who Julie Andrews was. -
*********SPOILERS********* Well, I think you are going to be a little disappointed MissG...... New York did not get it, but the plane made a mistake a bombed Martha's Vineyard instead. Ha ha ha ha... No, actually General Black flew his Vindicator bomber to New York City with the Empire State Building as ground zero. Just as he released the bomb, he took one of those pills and killed himself. As he was drifting away, we can hear him and his dream of the bullfighter again. Of course, not only was the president's wife in New York, but also General Black's wife was there as well. The last few images were of children playing, traffic, people walking around and then all of a sudden an image of birds taking off and then......black screen.

Of course she is . . . Free to be stupidly arrogant and careless to the point of simply alienating herself from millions of people who will remember Audrey and everything that was worthwhile to a career that for Thompson will take a very, very long way to achieving. Only thing is does Thompson really care what people like you would say in return to her comments about Hepburn. I do not think she would care. As far as I am concerned, it is refreshing to see someone in today's world of entertainment taking the stand Thompson has taken. Most people in the public spotlight tend to shy away from making brash statements like Thompson did. Must be the fact that she is from Britain has something to do with it. -
