  1. Sounds very much like Orson Welles.

  3. Sent to MissGoddess: *I'm always amused by people saying a nerve has been hit when someone* *was simply giving their opinion, and doing so in more temperate language* *than the person they were replying to.* You can always tell when a troll doesn't want to respond to you directly. They reply to another poster who did not say what I said in an earlier post. This is what I replied to you: Wow, sounds like MissGoddess has hit a nerve. Apparently you felt the need not to respond to me. But I guess this is a tactic that all trolls learn. Whenever someone directly confronts them with a stern reply, they usually go on the attack with some one else. I have an idea CB, why not pick on someone your own size?
  4. *I think that's lovely, Spunky.* This reminds me..... I once rode a horse named Spunky. My wife and I were staying at the Absaroka Mountain Lodge just outside the east entrance of Yellowstone about eight years ago, and they offered horseback rides. So we went! Two rides, a morning ride with breakfast cooked over an open fire and a lunch time ride with lunch cooked also over an opened fire. Well anyway, my horse was named Spunky and he was. Annie's horse's name was Sundance. Funny, Sundance did not look like Robert Redford.
  5. E. M. Forster's 1910 novel made into the great 1992 film of the same name: Howards End
  6. I don't think you have anything to worry about Maven! Palin will not be running in 2012. At least that is what I have been reading. She would have to have the support of the mainstream Republican party which she does no have now, the only other way she could run would be to run uncer the Tea Party label. And so far that party has not yet developed enough to run a national campaign. My money is on Romney and Pawlenty. But who knows? Unemployment could be back down around 8%, and enough of the unemployed will be back at work. If those numbers stay high into this November, watch out democrats. But so far this year, the anti incumbentcy crowd is winning almost every election. Obama better be careful, he might end up like Carter and Bush 1.
  7. *All I was trying to do was point out that this movie, irrespective of its entertainment value, was not faithful to the original source. And, unlike you, I tried to do so without hostility or condescension.* So you think I was condescending? Maybe you should look up the definition of the word before labeling me that. No where in my reply to you do I even come close to being condescending. Nor am I hostile. I was just bringing up some points that I though needed clarifying. I was in no way trying to be that. If you thought I was, I am sorry. I must say however, that much like what is happening in our country today, one can not use certain phrases or words mostly because some people either have very thin skin or that political correctness has gone way overboard.
  8. So, according to you the movie does not stack up to the original story? Does that mean you believe that every original story that is adapted for the screen MUST adhere faithfully to the original story? Does not happen very often if at all. Hollywood always tampers with original stories to fit their own way of storytelling. Its been this way for well over 100 years.
  9. One of my favorite opening title tunes of all time: 1975's The Wind and the Lion by the late, great Jerry Goldsmith..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31iNXfgWwWk&feature=related
  10. One of the worst westerns ever filmed. And unfortunately for us the film was directed by the late, great John Ford. He should have stopped making films with Donovan's Reef. But that is a different story. I have seen the film several times, and I must say that this is his worst film ever! If you read the review from DVD Savant, I would have to agree with most of the points of the review. I have included it here: http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/s2013ford.html Totally agree with Savant's review. How anyone can say that this is a great example of Ford's work as a director is beyond me. And to say that the film presents a sympathetic view to the plight of Native Americans is really off base. If you want a true sympathetic view of Native American Indians, might I suggest 1990's Dances With Wolves. Edited by fxreyman
  11. As of this instant....... The Adventures of Robin Hood 1938 The Wizard of Oz 1939 The Talk of the Town 1942 They Were Expendable 1945 The Best Years of Our Lives 1946 The Searchers 1956 North By Northwest 1959 To Kill a Mockingbird 1962 The Professionals 1966 Patton 1970
  12. Ronald Colman, Spencer Tracy, Anthony Hopkins
  13. No, I have no use for the Tea Parties as they are currently set up. But as many on the left have said their just a bunch of loonies to begin with. As if the left doesn't already have a bunch of loonies on their side. Funny how the media never talks about them. Won't affect my voting as many from the left out of office this coming November as I can. Edited by: fxreyman on Apr 18, 2010 7:18 PM
  14. Well, considering I had been online most of the morning, and due to the fact that we had rain on Friday night, I was just waiting for the grass to dry up some before my work chores outside were to begin. And I was in the process of paying bills and reading the message board. I'm guessing you can only do one thing at a time.
  15. I have better things to do. Like pay bills. Then go to work.
  16. Actually I do not prefer either of these versions. IMHO, the best film about the sinking of the Titanic was 1958's "A Night to Remember". Although one has to remember that the ship is shown sinking in one whole piece. It would not be known until the actual wreck was found in 1985 by Dr. Robert Ballard that the ship actually broke in two before sinking.
  17. Obviously I know what you mean. What I was referring to were members who have been here longer than three years. Now I understand that some who have been here longer than three years might be consider trouble makers, but one in particular who was allowed to come back last spring and who now has well over 18,000 posts just in less than one year would not be allowed to be chosen. I was thinking of people that were included in last years 15th Anniversary celebration in Atlanta. If they were good enough to be chosen for that august ceremony then quite possibly they could be asked to serve in this type of capacity.
  18. Excellent post Miss Goddess! I only hope that the moderators take this opportunity to take your suggestions and improve this wonderful, yet antiquated site. Something has to be done sooner rather than later. Otherwise we will lose this Message Board forever. Your reasoning is one of the reasons why I do not post as often. Most of the time if I do post and it is with someone who is either new to the Message Board or just has not posted as often, I usually get unruly replies. It could be that many of these new posters are INDEED sock puppets or other posters whose only intent is to make the Message Board experience worse for those of us who use it more than the casual user. My whole beef with the Message Board is the fact that the administrators allow the same posters back after these posters have been banned. I suggested at one time that they should have a more complete and thorough registration process. Silver Screen Oasis does this as does other movie sites as well. To have the admins hide behind an antiquated system is so unnerving. It does not serve anyone that well. And to continue to say that the Code of Conduct can not be changed? What is that supposed to mean? What the administrators should do is select some long-time posters to serve as sort of a governing body for the Code of Conduct. Select posters who have been here for say longer than three years. Then have that group of posters come up with new rules and regulations for the Message Board. Since obviously the current batch of administrators are either not interested in changing any of the rules or do not think anything is needed to make any changes. One of my suggestions would be to set up a much better registration process. Part of the problem is that anyone can have multiple user names. That should not be allowed to happen. The registration process could include the poster's real name, area of the country that they live, e-mail address, area of interests, and their user name. It would be very important to make the registration site be able to distinguish between posters who are IN FACT using multiple user names and NOT allow that to happen. My suggestion would be that if a poster has been banned then that is it. They are NOT allowed to come back as another user name. Obviously if the rules were changed now, nothing could be done about those posters who have come back as new user names. This new rule would have to take effect in the present time. Clearly something has to be done. And please moderators or administrators, don't look at these messages to you as some sort of fringe element at work here. Miss Goddess has been a long time user of the Message Board and has even been at TCM headquarters to help celebrate last years 15th anniversary celebration with Robert Osborne. So her knowledge of what is or has gone on here on the Message Board is something to take seriously. Please do not discount these thoughts and concerns of hers or ours. Thank you, Sincerely, Fxreyman Edited by: fxreyman on Apr 3, 2010 11:15 AM
  19. I have never seen as much angst as I have seen with this thread. You would have thought that the sky was falling. Now I did not see the commercial. Others claimed that they saw it. If TCM wanted to show commercials, I would have thought that some kind of announcement would have been made. But since no announcement had been made then if I had seen the commercial and it was only one commercial, then I would have deduced that it was some sort of mistake or technical glitch. But not most people here. At least TCM Programmer came on to explained how this happened. People, calm down already.
  20. The one thing that would not bother me in the least would be IF TCM did decide to show commercials. They could possibly sign up several well-know companies and broadcast their commercials ONLY before and after the airing of a movie or special program. Lets face it, if going somewhat commercial would help TCM secure the rights of additional and lesser shown films, then I am all for it. They could follow the lead set by CBS Sports. Every year during the Masters Golf Tournament telecast, CBS has an agreement with the Masters Tournament officials to show no less than 56 minutes of golf coverage per hour of each broadcast. And they have had only two or three sponsors of the telecast for the past five years or so. TCM could do something like that. The only difference would be that they would only broadcast the commercials before and after the showing of a film. Therefore, the channel would still remain "commercial free" during the airing of a film. No interruptions. Like I said, the competition between cable channels is growing ever fiercer and TCM could get additional movies or even show more varied programming. Or use the additional money from commercials to produce additional special programs or put more money into preservation. Of course I realize I am in the minority on this issue. Big time. 21. Boy now this is going too far..... Going off topic? Quite a bit off topic? What does that mean? A couple of posters decide to tell you what they think of an actor's career and you automatically assume that the thread is going where most other threads have gone? No way. Up to the post you made comparing Lassie to Culp, everything was going along nicely. Then you had to open up your flame thrower. Let me remind you: You're the one that decided to go off topic. Or did you think that by comparing Lassie to Robert Culp's career would not take this topic "off topic". You learn well from the master of going off topic. And I think we all know who that is. message edited by fxreyman Edited by: fxreyman on Mar 25, 2010 3:18 PM
  22. I stand by my earlier assertion that Lassie will be more remembered than Bob Culp as an American film icon. The data backs this up, because Lassie's films made more money and had more across the board appeal. I believe Lassie even had a bigger career on television than the aforementioned actor. This almost needs to be titled as OT, because he was known more as a television performer, not a film star. Lassie had a bigger career in the movies than Bill Culp did. Never ceases to amaze me how different posters react to the deaths of certain actors or others in show business. What really gets me about your comments is that just because he made a majority of his appearances on television, you seem to think that somehow should disqualify him from getting accolades from his many fans (including me) here on TCM's message board. The amount of posts about Micheal Jackson and others who had appeared in far fewer films seems to mean that just because a person has acted in very few films, that would suggest that they do not deserve any special mention. I wonder if you would feel the same way if someone like James Dean had passed away and had only appeared in three movies at the time of their death. Would that mean that that actor(s) would also not be on your list of OT? Culp made 34 appearances in the movies, plus another over 120 appearances on television. He was also a writer, having written 14 episodes of various tv programs that were aired. He was an icon, surely based on his pairing with Bill Cosby on "I Spy". He was in some pretty good films as well, including: P.T. 109, Sunday in New York, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, The Great Scout & Cathouse Thursday, and The Pelican Brief. You may be correct when you say that Lassie was much more successful in it's career, but you could not have found a nicer person in Hollywood than Mr. Culp. He deserves our praise and accolades.
