Did you all ever see Rod Taylor in the short lived CBS tv series called Bearcats!? His co-star was the recently deceased actor, Dennis Cole who was in Felony Squad in the 60's. The show centered on two troubleshooters who drove around the American southwest just before World War One in a Stutz Bearcat. They usually worked for more prosperous clients who had troubles that they did not want to take to the usual or regular authorities. They would not charge a standard fee for their services, rather they would hand over a blank check and instruct the client to write in whatever amount they chose to based on just how difficult or dangerous the job proved to be once it was completed. It ran on CBS in the fall of 1971, opposite the Flip Wilson Show I think. Flip killed it in the ratings and the show lasted only 13 weeks. I have the 13 episodes on dvd. The quality is not great, but at least I can relive my childhood for thirteen hours. The show was preceded by a pilot movie shown in the spring of 1971 titled Powderkeg. This pilot co-starred John McIntire, Fernando Lamas, Michael Ansara, Reni Santoni, William Bryant and Roy Jensen. Message edited by fxreyman 01/17/2010

Do you remember the very first movie you ever saw?
fxreyman replied to BruceGhent's topic in General Discussions
The first film I remember seeing was Sound of Music. My mom drove us to the local drive-in and I remember walking with my older brother to the concession stand to get popcorn and cokes. I was really cool to see this movie on the big, big, big screen. I only remember certain things about the film. I definitely remember the opening aerial shot going through those beautiful mountains. The first movie I remember seeing on tv and it scared the you know what out of me was The Crack in the World. All I can remember is after watching this on tv, I went to bed and had nightmare about having to climb up this lattice like structure from way down below, and in my nightmare, I slipped and fell off this structure to my death hundreds of feet below. The first thing I can recall seeing is the JFK assassination on TV. I was just under four years old at the time. My grandmother was sitting on the couch crying and all I could think was what happened to the tv show I was watching at the time? Where it go? Who was this old geezer with glasses talking about some guy getting killed in some far off place called Dallas? -
According to IMDb, Vera Miles appeared in 115 television series and movies. She also appeared in 44 motion pictures including: Wichita 1955 The Searchers 1956 Autumn Leaves 1956 The Wrong Man 1956 The F.B.I. Story 1959 A Touch of Larceny 1959 Psycho 1960 The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 1962 Follow Mw, Boys! 1966 Hellfighters 1968 She was also in The Green Berets. She played John Wayne's character's wife, Mrs. Mike Kirby. But all of her scenes were cut in the editing room. *And now just a general thought......And this is NOT a criticism......A suggestion maybe.....* I am always amazed at how some posters here say things like "I never knew she was in any other films" or something to that regard. If one is going to post here on the message boards then one might want to use the Information Please Forum and ask questions there. Or, here's an idea.... Maybe look the person's name up under Google first and see what information you find out. Whenever I write a post here I always try and get my facts correct. I use IMDb, Wikipedia, Google, any other websites before I post a question or post thoughts here. Many times I look up information in books or watch various movies to get the correct info. I know I will get some heat from some of you about this. But you know what? If you have access to this wonderful message board, then you also have access to other websites where you can get the information as well. A very small group of posters come across as lazy or just not interested in finding out for themselves before posting questions or statements, and that is fine, and of course I understand then that this is one of the reasons for a message board, to talk with others about movies and actors and try and get information from others here on the message board. I guess what I am saying is, that I try my best to research something I am going to write about first and try and get my facts as accurate as I can before I post them here. Maybe I am being too critical, and if some of you think this, well, all I can say is that I try to do the best I can, before I post stuff here. And I don't see anything wrong with that. Welcome to the boards! I think the movie you are looking for is 1947's "Ivy". The screenplay by frequent Hitchcock collaborator Charles Bennett has everything a fan of high-society thrillers could want, including poisoned brandy, inheritance scams, passionate affairs, and Joan Fontaine falling down an elevator shaft in a $30,000 wardrobe. message edited by: fxreyman

I guess you'd better contact ALL of the critics and tell them, they are going to have to delete all of their picks and wait until later this year. -
TOP 10 STUPIDEST OSCAR WINS FOR BEST ACTRESS, 1927-the present
fxreyman replied to JonnyGeetar's topic in General Discussions
So what are you saying? She should have made additional feature films as opposed to returning to her first love, the theater, and later having the good fortune of landing a role on television that would make her a household name? I think she was first and foremost a great theatrical performer who loved the stage. She just had the good fortune of appearing as one of TV's most unforgettable characters. And for many that is who she will always be remembered for. Not many people knew exactly how old she was when she played the part of Lola Delaney. Part of this was a deception by her publicist at the time saying that her birth was in 1907. She was actually 54. No one knew her real age until her death. She was actually born in 1898. I am sure becoming the first actress in history to win both a Tony and an Oscar for the same role was quite the accomplishment for Booth. She got the role of Hazel at the age of 63. When she was playing Hazel she would later say that Hazel was her insurance policy. A year after Hazel went off the air she would go on to make five additional tv movies and appear in only three more plays. In 1974 she retired. She was 76. I am sure the royalty checks she received from her appearance as Hazel came in handy during her retirement years. -
Happy New Year everyone!!! Annie and I just got back from a one night excursion to the sleepy little town of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. She told me this past Monday that she wanted to go out and do something different NY eve. So we got in the car yesterday and drove 250 miles to the southwest and spent the night at the Pagosa Springs Hot Springs Resort. The hot water tubs and pools were sooooo warm and comfortable out in the chilly sub freezing temps. We have been there several times now. We enjoy the small town atmosphere a lot. This morning we stopped by a local restaurant for breakfast then it was back on the road for home. Its amazing, we had to drive over Wolf Creek Pass twice. Some of you might remember that name from a 1970s era song by C.W. McCall (Convoy). They got a lot of snow the past few days. At the pass they had over 70" on the ground. Pretty darn cool! Well, I hope you all had a great NY eve. Now its off to bed to get a few zzzzzz's before dinner. Happy 2010 again!!!!!

I think you misunderstood what I wrote about Dunaway and Thompson...... This is what I wrote about Dunaway: Faye Dunaway won the Best Actress Oscar for her work in Network (1976). She was 35 at the time. She had been previously nominated for Best Actress in Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and Chinatown (1975). *Before Network*, she was in Hurry Sundown, The Happening, Bonnie and Clyde, The Arrangement, Little Big Man, Doc, Oklahoma Crude, The Three Musketeers, Chinatown, The Four Musketeers, The Towering Inferno, and Three days of the Condor. *After Network* she appeared in the following movies: Voyage of the Damned, Eyes of Laura Mars, The Champ, The First Deadly Sin, The Wicked Lady, Supergirl, Barfly, Midnight Crossing, and made a lot of tv movies, and tv series. To say her career failed after the Oscar win, I would say that hers has flourished. *She may not have had the quality of films she was making before Network, but she is one heck of a busy actress.* And from what I have learned, most actors would rather be busy than just sit by their phone waiting for a call from their agent. I may not have titled Dunaway's roles in Bonnie and Clyde, Chinatown and Network as iconic, but they were important roles before she won Best Actress for Network. As for Thompson again, this is what I wrote: She was 33 when she won her Best Actress Oscar for the excellent Howards End (1992). In 1994 she was nominated twice. One nomination was for Best Supporting Actress for the film In the Name of the Father (1993) starring Daniel Day-Lewis. She was also nominated that same year for Best Actress in The Remains of the Day (1993) In 1996 she was nominated for two awards: For Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium and for Best Actress in the superb Sense and Sensibility (1995). She did not win Best Actress, but she did win the Screenplay award. *Before Howards End*, she was in four films, including the excellent Henry V, directed and starring her then husband Kenneth Branagh. *After her Oscar win*, she appeared in several high profile films: Much Ado About Nothing, The Remains of the Day, In the Name of the Father, Junior, Carrington, Sense and Sensibility, The Winter Guest, Primary Colors, Love Actually, Nanny McPhee, Stranger Than Fiction, Brideshead Revisited, and Last Chance Harvey. She also had supporting roles in two of the Harry Potter films. Now in comparing Thompson's career to Dunaway's, it is clear to me that Thompson has been in more high quality productions at this stage of her career after her Oscar win in 1992 than what Dunaway was in at her stage after her Oscar win. I agree, Thompson's output may not have been as strong as other actresses, but the films she were in after 1995 were in my opinion stronger films than Dunaway appeared in after winning her Oscar for Network. I would also argue that Dunaway has remained a strong prescence in the industry for quite some time.

Jennifer Jones, 90, has passed away
fxreyman replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in General Discussions
It is true. While no one can argue that there are lists made up by the national media, most of the time those lists are done by third rate magazines and low-rated cable tv shows. Your listing of TV Guide is interesting. In a recent publishing rating, TV Guide was listed as #14 in a listing of the top 25 magazine subscriptions in the US. So I stand by what I said. Now you can probably find a listing or a polling of rankings of actors/actresses from yesteryear, but not too often from mainstream media magazines. Doesn't happen too often. Mostly it does happen on those "special" TV broadcasts like AFI and other types of cable tv shows, but not in the national print media. -
Jennifer Jones, 90, has passed away
fxreyman replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in General Discussions
Do you really think that for one moment the national media magazines give a rats you know what to the passing of someone whose last film was made in 1974? Give me a break. They are not going to stop and note the passing of someone like Jones. Now, maybe a national publication like Entertainment Weekly, and the trade magazines will make mention, but you are living in fantasy land if you think the national media is going to pay attention to Jones' passing. Not only that but I am sure that their year end lists were made up in late November to early December. -
What DVDs/Blus did you get for Christmas?
fxreyman replied to filmlover's topic in Classic Film DVD Reviews
I could say that Santa brought some nice dvds to me but that would be false. What I did as I have done for the past few years is make my annual Christmas purchase of films on dvd. And I did not purchase any new Blu-Ray discs this year even though I have a HD tv and a blu-ray player now. This year I have continued the practice of purchasing dvds to replace older vhs tapes in my collection. I am currently at about 140 vhs, so I still have a ways to go. This years take included the following: Frankenstein '31, Universal 75th Anniversary Legacy edition The Mummy '32, Universal Legacy edition Scarface '32 King Kong '33, Two-disc special edition. Captains Courageous '37 Yankee Doodle Dandy '42, Two-disc special edition. Double Indemnity '44, Universal Legacy edition The Postman Always Rings Twice '46 White Heat '49 An American in Paris '51, Two-disc special edition. On the Waterfront '54, Special edition Spartacus '60, Restored widescreen version. Lawrence of Arabia '62, Two-disc Limited edition To Kill a Mockingbird '62, Universal Legacy edition and..... Whats the big deal you say? Fox Movie Channel shows basically the same group of 20 films each and every month. Did you know that Fox Studio and 20th Century Fox produced more than 150 westerns over the years? 161 westerns to be precise. I looked it up. Now just being a casual observer of the Fox Movie Channel, one would think with that many westerns in the library, you would think that Fox could get a little creative and show more than just 20 of the same movies over and over again. I understand that many of the titles may not be available, but still....... Here is the list: Ambush at Cimarron Pass 1958 Apache Rifles 1964 Apache Warriors 1957 The Arizona Kid 1930 Bad Girls 1994 Badlands of Montana 1957 Bandolero 1968 Belle Starr 1941 Belle Starr's Daughter 1948 The Big Trail 1930 The Black Whip 1956 Blindman 1971 Blood Arrow 1958 The Border Patrolman 1936 The Bravados 1958 Brigham Young 1940 Broken Arrow 1950 Broken Lance 1954 Buffalo Bill 1944 Butch and Sundance: The Early Years 1979 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1969 The Californian 1937 The Call of the Wild 1935 Canadian Pacific 1949 The Cariboo Trail 1950 Cattle Empire 1958 The Cisco Kid 1931 The Cisco Kid and the Lady 1940 The City of Badmen 1953 The Comancheros 1961 Copper Sky 1957 The Cowboy and the Blonde 1941 Cowboy Millionaire 1935 The Culpepper Cattle Company 1972 Dakota Lil 1950 The Deerslayer 1957 The Desperados Are In Town 1956 Drums Along the Mohawk 1939 The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox 1976 The Dude Ranger 1934 Escape From Red Rock 1958 Fair Warning 1931 The Fiend Who Walked the West 1958 The Fighting Man of the Plains 1949 Flaming Frontier 1958 Flaming Star 1960 Fort Courageous 1965 For the Love of Mike 1960 Forty Guns 1957 From Hell to Texas 1958 Frontier Gun 1969 Frontier Marshal 1934 Frontier Marshal 1939 Fury at Furnace Creek 1948 Gambler From Natchez 1954 Garden of Evil 1954 The Gay Caballero 1932 Golden Girl 1951 The Golden West 1932 The Great K and A Train Robbery 1926 Green Grass of Wyoming 1948 The Gunfighter 1950 A Holy Terror 1931 Hombre 1967 In Old Arizona 1929 The Iron Horse 1924 Jesse James 1939 Just Pals 1920 Just Tony 1922 Kid Blue 1973 The Last Hard Men 1976 The Last of the Duanes 1930 Last of the Duanes 1941 The Last of the Mohicans 1992 The Last Trail 1933 The Last Wagon 1956 Life in the Raw 1933 The Lone Texan 1959 Love Me Tender 1956 Lucky Cisco Kid 1940 The Man From Snowy River 1982 The Mark of Zorro 1940 Massacre 1956 Miracle of the Hills 1959 Mohawk 1956 My Darling Clementine 1946 My Friend Flicka 1943 Mystery Ranch 1932 North to Alaska 1960 O'Malley of the Mounted 1936 One Foot in Hell 1960 100 Rifles 1969 The Oregon Trail 1959 The Outcasts of Poker Ridge 1952 Outlaw's Daughter 1954 The Ox-Bow Incident 1943 Panamint's Bad Man 1938 Pony Soldier 1952 The Proud Ones 1956 The Purple Hills 1961 The Quiet Gun 1957 The Raid 1954 The Rainbow Trail 1925 The Rainbow Trail 1932 Ramona 1936 Rawhide 1938 Rawhide 1951 The Restless Breed 1957 The Return of Frank James 1940 The Return of the Cisco Kid 1939 Return of the Texan 1952 Ride a Violent Mile 1957 Ride on Vaquero 1941 Riders of the Purple Sage 1931 Riders of the Purple Sage 1941 Rio Conchos 1964 River of No Return 1954 Robber's Roost 1933 Roll Along, Cowboy 1937 Romance of the Rio Grande 1941 Rose of Cimarron 1952 Seven Cities of Gold 1955 The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw 1959 Shooting High 1940 Showdown at Boot Hill 1958 The Siege at Red River 1954 Sierra Baron 1958 The Silver Whip 1953 Smoky 1946 Stagecoach 1966 Stagecoach to Fury 1956 The Storm Rider 1957 Take a Hard Ride 1975 The Tall Men 1955 These Thousand Hills 1959 Thirteen Fighting Men 1960 Three Bad Men 1926 Three Young Texans 1954 Thunder Mountain 1935 A Ticket to Tomahawk 1950 The True Story of Jesse James 1957 Two Flags West 1950 The Undefeated 1969 Under the Pampas Moon 1935 Villa! 1958 Viva Cisco Kid 1940 Walk Tall 1960 Warlock 1959 War Party 1965 Way of a Gaucho 1952 Western Gold 1937 Western Union 1941 When a Man's a Man 1935 When Legends Die 1972 Whispering Smith Speaks 1935 White Feather 1955 Wild and Whoolly 1937 Wolf Dog 1958 Yellow Sky 1948 Young Guns of Texas 1962 Young Jesse James 1960 Merry Christmas! What are the greatest movies of the decade?
fxreyman replied to skimpole's topic in General Discussions
*And fxreyman, I can imagine why people might not prefer The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but why prefer Gladiator?* That is a very good question. Gladiator was and still remains a personal favorite of mine. It is one of the few movies where excellent acting is paired with a fairly well written film. It compares favorably with Spartacus, even though Spartacus was mainly about a slave revolt that had gladiators as just a small part of its story. It also had excellent special effects. But mostly I like it for the charismatic performance of Russell Crowe.
