  1. You can listen to a wonderful appreciation of Kathryn Grayson by Scott Simon on NPR's website. It was broadcast this morning (Sat. 2/20) on Weekend Edition and has been archived. The appreciation includes excerpts of her singing "Waltz Serenade," "Make Believe," "So in Love," and of course "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes". Quite a treat. Another treat is to watch *The Kissing Bandit*. The story is pure hokum and Sinatra is miscast, but the production values are not to be believed --- MGM at its best. The camera work on Miss Grayson is superb. She is at the peak of her youthful beauty and is costumed magnificently. All of this in Color by Technicolor!
  2. I first saw Kathryn Grayson in *Showboat* when I was 10 years old, and I fell in love with her immediately. She introduced me to the lovely Jerome Kern melodies which I still treasure. As I grew older and her films were available on TV and video, I fell in love all over again. She was a great talent and a renowned beauty. Her rendition of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" from *Lovely to Look At* is absolutely stunning. She and Howard Keel were a great screen team, and he once said that she was the most beautiful actress in Hollywood. I feel that a part of my youth is now gone.
  3. Regarding Warners Archives discs which will not play on certain DVD machines. I have several Warners Archives discs which I ordered months ago and they play quite well on my machine which is a Panasonic player and digital recorder. However, I recently ordered a copy of Rosalie; and when I received it, it would not play on my machine. I contacted the company from which I purchased the disc, and they said that Warners was now putting a chip in their Archives disc which prevents them from playing on any DVD machine which can record as well as play. I can understand their concern; however, it makes no sense to me as I can't record a disc. I can only record off the air. They certainly are losing me as a customer.
  4. The question you ask had bothered me since I first saw the film many years ago. I found the answer in Ron Haver's wonderful book, _A Star Is Born: The Making of the 1954 Movie and Its 1983 Restoration_. According to Haver, Amanda Blake was chosen by George Cukor to play a presenter at the Oscar ceremonies scene. Her part was to announce the winner of the best actor award, present him the award, listen to his acceptance speech, and then exit with him. In readying the film for release and getting it down to a three-hour running time, many filmed scenes had to be cut. The beginning of the awards ceremony was shortened considerably, and almost all of Amanda Blake's footage wound up on "the cutting room floor." However, her credit in the main titles remained -- "an oversight that no one thought to catch in the rush to get the film finished for the premiere. All that's left of Blake are two quick shots, one as she walks off the stage, and another of her seated at the table just behind Garland."
  5. Great News!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Esther Williams Vol. II from Warner Brothers Home Video will be released on Oct. 6th. Titles include *Thrill of Romance (45), This Time for Keeps (47), Fiesta (47), Pagan Love Song (50), Easy to Love (53),* and probably her best and most remembered film, *Million Dollar Mermaid (52)*. All have been remastered and include lots of extras.
  6. What in the world has happened to the print of SANTA FE TRAIL? What I'm seeing is faded and murky. I'm beginning to think that it's landed in Public Domain hell. Amazon has several dvd issues at low prices -- none is from Warners. I checked WBShop and it's not listed there. Any ideas?
  7. I'm pretty sure you're talking about _A Tree Grows in Brooklyn_. The film was a premier for TCM. It was released by Twentieth-Century-Fox in 1945 and starred Dorothy McGuire, Joan Blondell, Peggy Ann Garner, and James Dunn. Dunn won that year's academy award for best supporting actor. It's a grand film directed by Elia Kazan.
  8. Sorry -- *Yolanda and the Thief*
  9. I just received the two-disc special edition of *An American in Paris*, and it is spectacular. For this edition, the film was remastered using Warner's ultra-resolution process, and the color and clarity is beyond belief. If I didn't know better, I would swear that the picture was made yesterday! I'm a big fan of Freed, Minnelli, Kelly, et al; so perhaps I'm a bit biased, but the entire package including some great extras is magnificent. Thank you Warner's for keeping the MGM musical alive. Now, let's have *Yoland and the Thief*.
  10. Try the site "ioffer". I'm pretty sure that the film has never been released officially; however, there are some copies on this site. I'm not sure of the quality, but it's probably the closest you're going to get.
  11. This guy will need a job come January 2009. Would you hire anyone with such a record? RESUME GEORGE W. BUSH 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, DC 20520 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE LAW ENFORCEMENT I was arrested in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1976 for driving under the influence of alcohol. I pled guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver?s license suspended for 30 days. My Texas driving record has been ?lost? and is not available. MILITARY I joined the Texas Air National Guard and went AWOL. I refused to take a drug test or answer any questions about my drug use. By joining the Texas Air National Guard, I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam . COLLEGE I graduated from Yale University with a low C average. I was a cheerleader. PAST WORK EXPERIENCE I ran for U.S. Congress and lost. I began my career in the oil business in Midland, Texas, in 1975. I bought an oil company, but couldn't find any oil in Texas. The company went bankrupt shortly after I sold all my stock. I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that took land using taxpayer money. With the help of my father and our friends in the oil industry, including Enron CEO Ken Lay, I was elected governor of Texas. ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR OF TEXAS I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making Texas the most polluted state in the Union. During my tenure, Houston replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America. I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of billions in borrowed money. I set the record for the most executions by any governor in American history. With the help of my brother, the governor of Florida, and my father's appointments to the Supreme Court, I became President after losing by over 500,000 votes. ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT I am the first President in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record. I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars per week. I spent the U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury. I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history. I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period. I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period. I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market. In my first year in office, over 2 million Americans lost their jobs and that trend continues every month. I'm proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history. My "poorest millionaire," Condoleeza Rice, had a Chevron oil tanker named after her. I set the record for most campaign fund-raising trips by a U.S. President. I am the all-time U.S. and world record-holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations. My largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth Lay, presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud in U.S. History, Enron. My political party used Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to assure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision. I have protected my friends at Enron and Halliburton against investigation or prosecution. More time and money was spent investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating one of the biggest corporate rip- offs in history. I presided over the biggest energy crisis in U.S.history and refused to intervene when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed. I presided over the highest gasoline prices in U.S.history. I changed the U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts. I created the Ministry of Homeland Security, the largest bureaucracy in the history of the United States government. I've broken more international treaties than any President in U.S. history. I am the first President in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Human Rights Commission. I withdrew the U.S. from the World Court of Law. I refused to allow inspectors access to U.S. "prisoners of war" detainees and thereby have refused to abide by the Geneva Convention. I am the first President in history to refuse United Nations election inspectors (during the 2002 U.S. election). I set the record for fewest numbers of press conferences of any President since the advent of television. I set the all-time record for most days on vacation in any one-year period. After taking off the entire month of August, I presided over the worst security failure in U.S. history. I garnered the most sympathy for the U.S. after the World Trade Center attacks and less than a year later made the U.S. the most hated country in the world, the largest failure of diplomacy in world history. I have set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously protest me in public venues (15 million people), shattering the record for protests against any person in the history of mankind. I am the first President in U.S. history to order an unprovoked, pre-emptive attack and the military occupation of a sovereign nation. I did so against the will of the United Nations, the majority of U.S. citizens, and the world community. I have cut health care benefits for war veterans and support a cut in duty benefits for active duty troops and their families-in-wartime. In my State of the Union Address, I lied about our reasons for attacking Iraq and then blamed the lies on our British friends. I am the first President in history to have a majority of Europeans (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and security. I have so far failed to fulfill my pledge to bring Osama Bin Laden [sic] to justice. RECORDS AND REFERENCES All records of my tenure as governor of Texas are now in my father's library, sealed and unavailable for public view. All records of SEC investigations into my insider trading and my bankrupt companies are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view. All records or minutes from meetings that I, or my Vice-President, attended regarding public energy policy are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public review. I am a member of the Republican Party. .
  12. *Yolanda, Yolanda, Yolanda......................* How much longer must we wait?
  13. Barnes and Noble is having a DVD sale ? the clerk at my local store said that the company was cleaning out its warehouse. They have various Fox classics for $9.99. I was able to pick up Warner?s John Ford Collection for that price. The set includes *The Informer, Mary of Scotland, The Lost Patrol, Sergeant Rutledge, and Cheyenne Autumn.* That?s quite a bargain for ten dollars. B/N online lists the collection at $26.99 on sale. I asked the clerk if there was some mistake, and he assured me the low price was correct.
  14. Amen...............I never expected to find such arrogant and mean people on this board!
  15. No one sang because at that time, the early 60's, movie musicals were not the draw that they had once been. Even thought FANNY had been a great success on Broadway as a musical, it was decided by the powers-that-be that the film would have a better reception if it were presented as a straight drama rather than a musical. Harold Rome's wonderful music was used as background for the movie, and it is haunting.
