So glad to see your little essay on *Tight Spot* moira. To be fair, I did comment on her haircut just in passing, because I was recording the movie and hadn't the chance to watch it properly, so I couldn't really put it in the context of what was going on in the movie. Having said that, I have the recording and hope to be watching it soon B-)

Of the many colourful movies directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, this is perhaps one of the lesser-known ones, and oddly enough it seems not to have been released on DVD either in America or the UK. It is an ambitious project, with an eclectic cast: Anthony Quayle, Anton Walbrook, Dennis Price, Ludmilla Tch?rina, Michael Redgrave, Mel Ferrer and Anneliese Rothenberger, to name a few. Although the movie is set in post-war Vienna (when it was still occupied by the Four Powers) it didn't really involve much location shooting; most of it is filmed in soundstage (I don't remember if there's even any second-unit photography in the movie showing what Vienna actually looked like at the time). Obviously it is most likely to appeal to those who liked other similar Powell/Pressburger projects like *The Red Shoes* and more specifically *The Tales of Hoffman*. Here's hoping the movie will become more widely available some time in the near future, either through a possible Criterion release or perhaps TCM showings.

If you don't recognize that line, you may never have watched "Never Love a Stranger", an odd little gangster film that's possibly one of the lesser-known movies in Steve McQueen's filmography. The film actually stars John Drew Barrymore as a young man who was raised in a Catholic orphanage but is thrown out after it is discovered he was actually a Jew. He subsequently raises to become one of New York's top capos, which pits him against his childhood friend (McQueen) who is now a special prosecutor for the D.A.'s office. It isn't a great movie but at least the new DVD release features a razor-sharp transfer.

Some mysteries may never be solved! I wonder what H.G. Wells would have said about that. -

He's not going to get it, he's too busy cutting-and-pasting around the clock. -
