Yes, he got better-looking during most of his film career. But still, I feel that by his late 60's/early 70's, he looked older than some 80-year-old stars do today. Don't get me wrong - I still love Cary. I just think people used to age differently.

Offhand I'd have to say I think she could have pulled it off quite well, and maybe even found a few interesting directions in which to take the character that are not there in the movie as we know it. -

As far as opening shots go, that one is definitely one of the most memorable ones, and it certainly seemed awe-inspiring when the movie was brand-new, the special effects technology was so far advanced from what had been seen in Stanley Kubrick's *2001* and on top of that it was all done in the tradition of the Saturday morning serials. Just how revolutionary it seemed at the time might be hard to grasp for younger viewers who've grown up on a steady diet of CGI effects.

The Warner Studio had their Museum as part of their tour, I would check with the Warner Studio people. It's been a looong time since I took the Warner Studio, but I can try and check again next time I go. How many of these places have you been to yourself?

That's an interesting article, I didn't really know much about Vicki Baum and certainly wouldn't have imagined she was an Austrian who had to flee from Europe after the Nazis came to power.

*Brand Upon the Brain!* is definitely an interesting movie, I guess it's kinda hard to describe to someone who hasn't seen it. But it definitely manages to achieve a kind of dreamlike quality, with some vivid and/or disturbing imagery. It's great that the Criterion DVD comes with 8 different narrations to choose from; I just went with the default Isabella Rossellini narration.
