  1. I really hope I'll enjoy it when I get the DVD in the mail. B-)
  2. > {quote:title=marcco44 wrote:}{quote} > also on my list.....gigi & an american in paris, the picture of dorian gray, the 3 stooges vol.3, and that new astaire book by joseph epstein....... i'd better start looking for a THIRD job!! If you have a third job, will you still have time left to watch the movies?
  3. Looks like TCM thought enough of the movie to dedicate it an article: http://www.tcm.com/movienews/index/?cid=205796 It's coming out on DVD this coming Tuesday and I look forward to watching it... probably more so than any possible remake that Tarantino may or may not decide to make!
  4. > {quote:title=MissGoddess wrote:}{quote} > Ford wouldn't have had it any other way. Amen to that! B-)
  5. Just thought it was funny that Leonard Maltin thought of some of us specifically in the introduction to the 2009 edition of his movie guide... but mostly to plug his other book (the Classic Movie Guide) Says Maltin... "If you love old movies and keep Turner Classic Movies on 24/7, I encourage you to consult that companion volume to find films we've had to drop from our bulging annual."
  6. And I wasn't trying to play mod by suggesting you post the info in the Upcoming Releases thread, just wanted to suggest that because people who might be interested in that may not necessarily be checking this thread regularly.
  7. Where did you read that Genius Products was a close affiliate of Legend? I can find no such information on the respective websites for both companies. It does seem that Genius Products has at some point distributed family movies released by Legend. However the bulk of GP titles are recent theatrical releases from the Weinstein Co. and IFC films. In any case, if you haven't seen any info about the Little Rascals on the Upcoming Releases threads, you may want to mention it there, too. Thank you for sharing!
  8. Well, another Paramount title that has recently been released through Legend Films is *French Postcards*, from the guys who also wrote *American Graffitti*. It's all about American college students in France. It should definitely appeal to anyone who's ever taken French lessons - or even who is fluent in French. It's not a truly great movie, even as far as stuff from the late 70's goes, but it does feature Debra Winger and Mandy Patinkin in early roles (as well as the famous French actor Jean Rochefort).
  9. amazon.com is going to have a "lightning deal" as part of its daily specials today, starting at 5 pm EST/ 2 PST They don't tell you exactly what it is until it begins, but here's the hint: This alien comedy ran for six seasons, garnering 31 Emmy nominations and eight wins. Past "lightning deals" have included the *Ford at Fox* collection (for a little over $100) so there's some good deals there.
  10. Do you ever just run out of shelf space at your place?
  11. > {quote:title=casablancalover wrote:}{quote} > There's a theme night "Hollywood" night; choices abound: > > *Two weeks in Another Town* > Yes, there are several other movies that deal with Hollywood life. But the reason I brought up *Two Weeks in Another Town* is that it is a sort-of-sequel to *The Bad and the Beautiful*, reuniting director Minnelli and some of the cast -- you even see a clip from *The Bad and the Beautiful* in *Two Weeks in Another Town*. It's an interesting contrast, as well: *The Bad and the Beautiful* is in b&w and in Academy ratio; *Two Weeks in Another Town* is in glorious color and widescreen aspect ratio, signaling the changes that took place in Hollywood filmmaking between 1952 and 1962.

Whenever I start dreading the potential cost of upcoming DVD releases, I just remind myself that, except for stuff that might be going out-of-print (like limited editions), almost everything else I could just rent whenever I felt like watching it. Truth is, with all the DVD box sets and TCM recordings I've at home, I could probably stay busy for a year and a half, without getting any new stuff... :0
  13. > {quote:title=Poinciana wrote:}{quote} > I have somehow missed Two Weeks.... Just Googled it and read a plot synopsis, sounds great. I'll join the lobbying effort. I would say *Two Weeks in Another Town* should play at least as often, because unlike the earlier movie, it is not yet on DVD.
  14. I actually like this movie a lot. Just wish TCM would try to show it as a double bill with its sort-of-sequel *Two Weeks in Another Town* (also directed by Vincent Minnelli)
  15. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap_travel/20080725/ap_tr_ge/travel_brief_austria_sound_of_music *'Sound of Music' daughter returns to Austria* By VERONIKA OLEKSYN, Associated Press Writer VIENNA, Austria - Seventy years after fleeing the Nazis, a woman whose family was immortalized in "The Sound of Music" has returned to Austria to visit her former home. "I'm back home again," 93-year-old Maria von Trapp told reporters in Salzburg Friday after spending several nights in her childhood house, which has been transformed into a hotel. Located in a posh part of Salzburg, the "Villa Trapp" once belonged to the von Trapps, who gained global fame in the 1965 blockbuster starring Julie Andrews, which tells the story of an Austrian woman who marries a widower with seven children and teaches them music. The hotel is expected to officially open its doors to guests in October. Fans from around the world will have the chance to spend a night or two in the house the von Trapps called home between 1923 and 1938 before emigrating to the United States. Maria von Trapp ? who was flown in from the United States for the hotel's inauguration late Friday along with several relatives ? appeared enthusiastic about the endeavor. "I'm sleeping in the room where my brother slept ... it's very nice to be back again," she said in televised remarks. The von Trapps' property was confiscated by the Nazis and SS chief Heinrich **** moved in. SS barracks were built in the garden and the property was secured with barbed wire and armed guards. In the summer of 1947, the Missionaries of the Precious Blood bought the villa from the family. They later moved into a nearby building and rented it out to the business partners who spent $785,640) to convert it into a hotel. Johannes von Trapp, Maria's half-brother, who was born in the United States, said the family has returned to Austria on numerous occasions over the years. He appeared pleased that the villa had been converted. "I think it's a great idea ... it's an ideal high-quality property," he told The Associated Press by phone. The Salzburg villa does not appear in the movie, which used a lakeside castle and other locations for the exterior garden scenes. All of the interior shots were filmed in a Hollywood studio, and the famous opening scene of Andrews running across an alpine meadow was shot over the border in Bavaria, Germany. The von Trapps are expected to stay in Austria until early August. ____ On the Net: http://www.villa-trapp.cc
  16. 'Young Frankenstein' to Rise on Blu-ray This Halloween Mark your calendars, Mel Brooks fans: Fox has announced a Halloween arrival for the comedy classic 'Young Frankenstein.' Widely considered one of Brooks' best satires, 'Young Frankenstein' will make its much-requested Blu-ray bow on October 7 (the studio previously released a special edition DVD back in 2001).
  17. J'aime les films de Jacques Tati! :x
  18. Awesome news, edgecliff -- we can only hope that if they're taking their time it's because they wanted to find good source material or perhaps even restore the film a little bit, if possible.
  19. > {quote:title=CineMaven wrote:}{quote} > Thank you Raining Violets101. I feel like a young sprite. > . > . > . > . > . > ...and sometimes like a Pepsi. ;-) Huh? Ever felt like, say, mountain dew?

  21. Was *Mad Men* originally filmed in high-definition or on 35mm? And if it isn't being filmed in HD, does it really look much better on a BR disc?
  22. I look forward to getting slimed in high-definition.
  23. > {quote:title=kas_to wrote:}{quote} > where did you order it from? > > I looked on the internet and couldn't find anything You could probably find it in any store that sells DVDs or on amazon.com.
