Gotta love those re-releases of classic films timed to coincide with the new *Mummy* sequel coming out in theaters this summer! ;)

Meanwhile, we promised you a little more on Universal's The Mummy: Special Edition - Universal Legacy Series DVD (the 1932 film - due on 7/8, SRP $26.98). The 2-disc set will include audio commentary (with film historian Paul M. Jenson), a second commentary (with Rick Baker, Scott Essman, Steve Haberman, Bob Burns and Brent Armstrong), 4 documentaries/featurettes (including Mummy Dearest: A Horror Tradition Unearthed, He Who Made Monsters: Life and Legacy of Jack Pierce, Unraveling the Legacy of The Mummy and Universal Horror), a trailer gallery and a gallery of poster artwork and production stills.

I could have sworn there was another "Teddington" film besides *Crown v. Stevens* but I'll check later to make sure.

    > Just picked up an interesting piece of information. Criterion has licensed the Douglas Sirk classic drama MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION from Universal. This one stars Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson. One wonders why Universal has not released this popular title on its own. But then Universal is very strange about releasing titles from their vast Paramount-Universal library. The Criterion DVD is rumored for release next year.

    That will totally rock! :)

    I just came across this:

20th Century Fox and MGM have set a number of classic war films for release on Blu-ray on 6/3, as part of their Father's Day promotion. They include *The Longest Day, Patton, The Sand Pebbles, A Bridge Too Far* and *Battle of Britain* (SRP $39.98). Each will include 1080p anamorphic widescreen video and DTS 5.1 HD audio. In terms of bonus material, The Longest Day will offer a historical audio commentary with Mary Corey, a film commentary with Ken Annakin, 4 featurettes (A Day to Remember, Longest Day: A Salute to Courage, Backstory: The Longest Day and D-Day Revisited), a stills gallery and the theatrical trailer. Patton will include an introduction and commentary by writer Francis Ford Coppola, 2 featurettes (History Through the Lens: Patton - A Rebel Revisited and Patton?s Ghost Corps), The Making of Patton documentary, a production stills gallery accompanied by Jerry Goldsmith?s complete musical score, a behind-the-scenes photo gallery accompanied by audio essay on the historical Patton, and the theatrical trailer. Finally, The Sand Pebbles will include audio commentary by director Robert Wise, Candice Bergen, Mako and Richard Crenna, the film's isolated score with commentary by music producer Nick Redman, film music historian Jon Burnlingame and screen writer/historian Lem Dobbs, a trivia track, 13 deleted ?Road Show? scenes, 6 featurettes (The Making of Sand Pebbles, Steve McQueen Remembered, Bob Wise in Command, China 1926, A Ship Called San Pablo and The Secret of the San Pablo), a trivia track, the theatrical trailer and 2 radio documentaries (Changsha Bund and the Streets of Taipei and A Ship Called San Pablo). We've posted the other titles cover art previously, but here's art for Battle of Britain, A Bridge too Far and Patton...

    Maybe it's just MPD?

    > The SHOWBOAT box set would make an exciting Xmas 2008 release. WB are you listening?

I would certainly hope that whomever is in charge of releasing classic movies on DVD for WHV would read this thread from time to time.

Yes, *Show Boat* would make a great DVD set for this holidays. The only thing that would be as good or almost as good (for me at least) would be an Andy Hardy Collection DVD set which included all the movies, or a *Mexican Spitfire* set. I've recorded them from when they showed them in November, but still would like to see an official release someday.

    > Yes, Film Fatale, one of the reasons I haven't been posting upcoming releases anymore is since this thread became a bit of a mess. But I will try to post again when I get any inside info on new releases. *It is annoying to see a new DVD release posted several times.*

    >

    > I am still awaiting the anticipated release of the complete SHOW BOAT box set. Although rumored to be coming, WBHV has made no mention of its imminent release. Would love to see this one coming in the Fall or Winter of 2008. Also, hoping for a fall announcement of a John Garfield box set. Garfield has made so many wonderful films, a box set is long overdue.

You're totally right about the part of seeing the same DVD releases posted several times simply because there are posters who like to mindlessly spam everything in sight, instead of "following the conversation" as it were. I suggest you ignore anyone who is just spamming, if you haven't already done so.

I agree that a *Show Boat* DVD set would be awesome, I've seen all 3 versions obviously, and although I have mixed feelings about the 1929 version, it is still kind of a milestone film, especially for fans of filmed musicals. Hopefully when they release it, the set will be full of extras like they did with *The Jazz Singer*. :)

    > but one of the reasons i prefer to get my information from an interactive board is to see which releases other people are enthusiastic about too. i will no doubt look into some of the others you have listed as well now.

You know, it's hard to express one's enthusiasm about upcoming classic films on a bulletin board when most people's posts are getting buried underneath a mountain of spamming. I see other people posting here a lot less lately, and I'm afraid the commercial spamming might be one of the reasons.

    > Saw it for the first time, and enjoyed it immensely. Day and Gable had better chemistry than I would have imagined despite their age difference, and since I'm in the journalism business (copy editor), I wondered how accurate the storyline would be from that perspective. To my delight, it was reasonably good. (True, the newsrooms of 2008 are far different than those of 1958, but once you get beyond that, it was pretty sensible.)

    >

    > This film was sort of a bridge for Doris to her later "career girl" romantic comedies, although Gable (who apparently was only offered the role of the editor after Cary Grant and James Stewart turned it down) has far more substance than Rock Hudson.

    > All in all, a first-rate romantic comedy with heart and texture, something Gable needed in his post-MGM career after making a few lackluster westerns.

    Gig Young was good, too.

    > I like the information classicflix sends out in its emails. Even if you don't buy from them, you know pretty much everything that's coming to DVD in the genre of classic cinema. One big problem I do have with them though is that when I ordered the first and only item I've ever purchased from them - Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection 1 & 2 - they immediately charged my credit card. I placed the order in February, so they've had my money for two months even though this DVD set is not scheduled to ship until May 13. Neither Amazon nor B&N has ever done this, and I thought I even read somewhere here on the message boards that it was against the law for retailers to do this. This is the reason I will not buy from them again.

Sorry to hear that they charged you way before the item came out. Yes, I do believe it is against the law. You probably could file a complaint, if you felt it was worth the time and hassle... and I'm glad you've warned the rest of us!

Oh, as for anything they might send via email... that's different because you can decide if you want to sign up for it or not. When the same info is spammed constantly in the boards, well, that's a bit different IMHO.

  10. mateo,

The poster of which you speak is someone I've had on ignore at least since shortly after the Oscars, so I really can't say I have any idea of what he might have posted recently, except from what Edgecliff brought up. And it really does sound very suspicious to always be posting as if acting on behalf of a specific website that just so happens to sell DVDs. It just seems to me an awful lot like commercial solicitation. It wouldn't seem nearly as suspicious if, for example, people were posting the MSRP, which gives you a pretty good idea what you may actually end up paying in stores or shopping online, regardless of who you buy it from. (Also, you may disagree with me on this, but I think most people who buy DVDs regularly have a pretty good idea of what most individual DVDs and DVD box sets sell for).

It just doesn't sound honest to me to constantly be peddling a specific website, and come and say "remember you can get it for $XX.XX, only at this site which I'm always bringing to your attention". Of course I believe this boards already have some sort of policy against commercial spamming, so ultimately it may be best to simply let the administrators look at the posts in question and determine whether or not they are in violation of any site policy. As for myself, it won't matter either way because I will continue ignoring the person in question.

And I would be equally critical in any situation where any person that engaged in commercial spamming or any kind of spamming of an obnoxious nature, so it isn't something personal, either. If some people just appear to be trying to spam and/or be obnoxious the only thing we can do is ignore them.

P.S. When it comes to DVD prices, the best option almost always is to check on DVD Price Finder, which compares the prices of most online retailers and generally tries to keep up with most sales. I have no problem mentioning this site because they don't sell any DVDs directly, and I have found some good info there.

  11. Came across a small update today...

*Ebert hopes to make it to namesake film fest despite surgery*

CHICAGO - Roger Ebert hopes to make it to his annual namesake film festival next week despite hip surgery. The 65-year-old film critic was recovering Friday at a Chicago hospital from minor hip surgery after a recent fall.

"The show must go on," Ebert said in a statement posted on his Web site. "I am doing fine and if the doctors clear me, I will be there to welcome our guests."

Scheduled guests at the 10th annual Roger Ebert Film Festival include Ang Lee, Richard Roeper, Richard Corliss and Christine Lahti.

The 2008 "Ebertfest" ? sponsored by the critic's alma mater, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ? will be held April 23-27.

"Please keep those thumbs up in the hopes that Roger will be there to celebrate the tenth year of his film festival," Ebert's wife, Chaz, said in the statement. "He has an indomitable spirit."

A film critic at the Chicago Sun-Times for more than 40 years, Ebert has undergone a series of cancer surgeries in recent years, including the removal of a growth on his salivary gland and a tracheostomy, a procedure that opens an airway through an incision in the windpipe, that left him unable to speak.

Ebert has been on hiatus from his TV show, "Ebert & Roeper and the Movies," since 2006.

    > Okay so he's redundant and doesn't always read threads before responding, but he's been registered for 4 months and he has almost 2,000 posts!!! If I had posted that many times in 4 months I'd be copying and pasting to save time too which is what I assume he's doing. Also, I haven't looked through his posts but I bet he mentions other companies

    >

    > Let's move on.

You do seem very intent on defending that person. Plus, what makes you think the purpose of a bulletin board is just to mindlessly copy and paste and spam the boards endlessly with thoughtless drivel?

  13. > {quote:title=Web wrote:}{quote}

    > This is getting pretty amusing. I myself think that CelluloidKid is just what he/she claims to be. A movie enthusiast who cuts and pastes from his favorite site (Classicflix), and mistakenly thought anyone wanted to know their prices. His greatest fault is not having a good mental edit function on the films he chooses or the amount of info given. If he did work for Classicflix, then they need to hire people who don't post like they are obviously working for them and who cut and paste better. Plus, I've often heard him mention he picked this or that DVD up at Costco, even after he mentioned flix's price.

    >

    > All he's got to do is stop mentioning their prices and maybe edit some of the info. Plus leave the thread and never come back (just kidding).

Well, who knows, maybe the Classicflix people don't pay much and so end up with what they pay for.

  14. You know, as far as I can remember, nobody here previous to the person who plugs Classicflix had continuously plugged a sales-driven website to mention new releases, much less include the actual price. So when somebody starts doing that, I think it's obvious that it looks very much like someone connected to that site is just coming here to try to sell stuff.

And as I said before, many people post about special sales in the thread that's dedicated to that, just not always posting the same site that doesn't even have the best prices.
