  1. I was wondering whether anyone else had watched or recorded *The Wonderful World of The Brothers Grimm*. Here is some information that CelluloidKid shared with us in another thread. > *_The Wonderful World Of The Brothers Grimm_ (1962)* > > > *Stars*: Laurence Harvey, Karlheinz B?hm, Claire Bloom & Barbara Eden. > *Directed by*: Henry Levin, George Pal. > *Best Cinematography, Color*: Paul Vogel > *Release date*: August 7, 1962 (USA) > *_The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm_ was produced and exhibited in the original 3-strip Cinerama widescreen process. It was the first Cinerama feature that attempted to tell a cohesive story, unlike previous productions, which had all been travelogues.* > > *_Awards_:* > The film won an Academy Award (1963) and was nominated for three (3) more: > > *_Won_* > > Best Costume Design, Color: Mary Wills, > *_Nominated_* > > Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Color: George Davis, Edward Carfagno, Henry Grace, Dick Pefferle) > > Best Cinematography: Paul Vogel. > > Best Music, Scoring of Music, Adaptation or Treatment: Leigh Harline > > > *_Golden Globes - USA -_* > Nominated: (1963) > > Best Motion Picture - Musical > > Best Motion Picture Actor - Drama - Laurence Harvey > > > > > > *_PER WIKIPEDIA_:* > > _The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm_ has never been restored or released onto DVD. There was a laserdisc issue of the film, but the quality of the print used for the laserdisc issue was very poor, and was missing the prologue, overture, entracte and walk-out music from the Cinerama roadshow version. The film was also transferred in the incorrect aspect ratio, cutting off the far left and right portions of the image. I had the opportunity to watch this on laserdisc a few years ago, and it was a great deal of fun. However it seems that even this TCM broadcast wasn't quite complete - it included an overture and intermission music, but there was no exit music. Having said that, it's still the best presentation currently available of this great movie - one of only 2 narrative movies ever filmed in true Cinerama (together with *How the West Was Won*, of course). One can only hope that this movie will some day receive the same kind of treatment as *HTWWW* and be properly restored and released on DVD and blu-ray. Until such day might come, the TCM print is the best thing we have.
  2. > {quote:title=clore wrote:}{quote} > Yes, it would have had to be as that was the limit of the format. Super VHS boosted it to 420 lines. That's what I thought, Charles. Didn't laserdiscs have roughly the same lines of definition as Super-VHS? And isn't standard definition broadcasting capped at roughly 480 lines?
  3. > {quote:title=ChipHeartsMovies wrote:}{quote} > My favorite Kim Novak movie by far. For me, it's probably my 2nd favourite KN movie, after *Vertigo*. But who cares - she's stunning in both! :x
  4. It's a swell movie!! Here is the trailer, in case you're interested in watching: http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/index/?o_cid=mediaroomlink&cid=59355
  5. > {quote:title=ChipHeartsMovies wrote:}{quote} > LOL, so, so wrong. You mean you don't think anyone would want to wear Ben-Hur #5 ?
  6. Jack Arnold directed *Tarantula* with _Leo G. Carroll_
  7. Hopefully, the TCM print will look as good, if not better, than the VHS you have. I'm not sure about the broadcast signal, but wasn't VHS capped at about 280 lines of resolution?
  8. *With our new administration...I believe in hope and patience. Hmmm...what did Obama say: "you will not outlast us."* You will please forgive me, Miss CineMaven, if I express a little bit of confusion by your statement. My understanding is that the discussion you started was about the TCM forums. Your reference to the quote from the Obama speech brings to mind the very real and serious threat of fundamentalist terrorism. With all due respect, I believe if the intent was to create something of a parallel, it might not be the most sensitive way to go about it. Certainly not when terrorism has had a very real cost in human lives, while anything having to do with the forums would, I would presume, involve at the most some bruised egos and hurt feelings. Perhaps I have misunderstood the intent of your reference to Obama's speech. If I did misunderstand it, then sorry. But I do think that the people who have lost loved ones to acts of terrorism would not appreciate such criminal acts to be compared to something that has happened in a movie forum. Having said that, I too hope that the message of the new U.S. administration might prevail upon the spirit of the American people, and that, in all walks of life, we will try to distance ourselves from petty disagreements and divisive strategies. Together, we can do a lot to make everything around us a more conducive environment for people wanting to create a true community where mutual understanding is the norm rather than the exception.
  9. > {quote:title=Arkadin wrote:}{quote} > I have a nice print of the film with an insightful forward by Martin Scorcese. I will say if you've never seen it, not to go in expecting typical western fare. Also, the Trucolor print is particularly vivid. Ray used very bright and contrasting colors, giving the film an incredibly vibrant look. Is your copy of the film from the VHS or laserdisc release from Republic Pictures? I am pretty sure I did watch that at some point. It is a movie I definitely like, although I haven't watched it in a pretty long while.

  11. Kim, I almost forgot to mention this other Ning site: http://netflixcommunity.ning.com/ Obviously it is centered on the needs of Netflix subscribers, but you find a lot of folks who like all kinds of different movies. And if you are a Netflix suscriber, you'll get a lot of useful information on the "throttling" of DVDs, occasional slowdowns in DVD delivery, etc. With almost 8,000 members, it's definitely one of the largest movie-related communities I know of on Ning.
  12. Dear kimpunkrock, As one of the creators of the TCM Fans site, I'd like to thank you and let you know I appreciate your suggestions. Like you said, it's very new at this point. We just created it around New Year's Eve, so it's approximately 3 weeks old. Of course everyone who wants to start a blog there about classic cinema can do so! The other neat thing about a Ning profile is that you can set your own privacy settings, so you decide whether your photos, videos, blogs, etc., are visible to everyone, or only those in your friend list (or just to yourself). The other community you mentioned is also a very good Ning site. Mica Network Creator, *TCM Fans Social Network*

  15. Bob Fosse was in *The Affairs of Dobie Gillis* with the charming _Debbie Reynolds_.
  16. Very good points, Arkadin. Furthermore, it is not currently available on R1 DVD - there is an import R2 version, but I've never watched it.
  17. On the schedule for 3/7/09.... _*Johnny Guitar*_ (1954) A lady saloon owner battles a female rancher out to frame her for murder. Cast: Joan Crawford, Sterling Hayden, Mercedes McCambridge. Dir: Nicholas Ray. C-110 mins, TV-PG, CC
  18. Charles Barton directed *Reveille with Beverly* which starred _Ann Miller_ B-)
  19. So, Charles, I take it you're fairly used to watching movies on a computer screen by now? Obviously when stuff is in the public domain and freely available on the net, there's no better way to watch, I suppose.
  20. Noir City 2009 starts today (1/23), for all those who may be able to attend. B-)
