I'm a big Curtiz fan, kubrickbuff. I appreciate your starting this thread. It's challenging to express one's appreciation for a director who was so prolific and workmanlike, who didn't have too much of a personal style but was ready to adapt himself to whatever the studio wanted. My personal Curtiz quote: "The scenario isn't the exact truth, but we have the facts to prove it." Curtiz directing two little-known actors in a little-known 1942 movie.

Well, I guess Frank isn't going to tell me why he's mad at me. At any rate, I was going to ramble a bit about *Never Say Never Again* I've just heard this movie is about to be released on blu-ray in a couple of months. This is a great announcement, since this is the only James Bond movie with Sean Connery that isn't part of the "official" series, which means that MGM Home Video doesn't own the rights to it. The movie is a sort of remake of *Thunderball*. It marked Connery's return as 007 in 1983, more than a decade since he'd last played the part in 1971's *Diamonds are Forever*. While it's not one of the greatest Bond movies ever, it does have some unique appeal, maybe because the cast is just so unlikely: Kim Basinger is the Bond girl (Domino), Max Von Sydow plays Blofeld, and Edward Fox plays M. There's also the smallish part for Rowan Atkinson, as Nigel Small-Fawcett. Many years later, Atkinson would take his own stab at making fun of the whole 007 with his mildly successful comedy *Johnny English*. I am really looking forward to the blu-ray of *Never Say Never Again*, not just because of the movie itself, but also because the most recent DVD of the movie was manufactured quite a few years back, so even by the modern-day standards of DVD production, the last available incarnation of the movie left quite a bit to be desired.

I would never argue that *Never Say Never Again* is one of the best Bond movies ever. However there is some unique appeal for those of us who'd missed Sean Connery after he left the "official" series. Incidentally, here is the cover art for the blu-ray version:

Well, I had promised earlier to try and have some screencaps from *Charade*. Sorry it's taking a little bit longer than I expected, there's just so many great scenes in the movie. In the meantime, here's a couple of shots taken from the trailer (which is included in the Criterion DVD): I love how they set up the kind of expectations they hoped the movie would fill. Some of the elements of Maurice Binder's artwork for the opening credits were also used here. This is one of the shots of the French Alps, apparently, taken directly from some of the scenes in the movie. B-)
