Should restoration include alteration?
Film_Fatale replied to filmlover's topic in General Discussions
You'r absolutely right. Technically, it does go back way before the 50's, but people tend to associate the early part of that decade with the "start" of television simply because that's when it became widely used. -

I'll send it out for repair, pronto. =sigh= "highly subjective" referred to *content* being used as criteria, generally speaking - not to what cinemafan was suggesting was the criteria for this particular selection process. clear now?

You know, outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. And inside the dog, it's too dark to read.

Lynn, Lynn, Lynn. Is it completely impossible to have a serious conversation without one or more serious misunderstandings? OK, I re-read the thread, and while it is true that cinemafan was referring to _guest programmers_ when replying to Fred, I did not mean to imply that my comment was in reference to _anyone in the forums_, and I think I was extremely clear about that. It was NOT in reference to the folks who were chosen. It was a comment in general, about folks in the forums, in general. Please, as I asked Kathy yesterday, do not take offense at a comment that was not meant for you or in the way that you interpret it. At the very least, if you think the words or the meaning aren't entirely clear, ask for a clarification. Honestly, I cannot believe how quick some folks in the forums are to take offense over something that they have entirely misunderstood, or misinterpreted. If you are uncertain as to whether or not a statement is perfectly clear, is it not better to politely ask for a clarification? I truly wish neither you nor Kathy nor anybody else would be so quick to take offense or interpret certain statements in such a way as to feel alluded to, when it was totally not the case. And I am especially surprised because when I wrote the post to which you just replied, I think I made it perfectly clear that I wasn't referring to any particular persons at all. Once again, the statement was in reference to folks who represent a subset of all forum users, but NOT in any way, shape or form to the folks who were selected as guest programmers. P.S. Lynn sorry if I sounded a bit stressed just now, there's just been a few times when I try to make a comment with the best intentions and somehow it is misunderstood or maybe I just didn't say something clearly, I don't know. In either case, I thank you for at least trying to address what I was trying to say, even if I didn't explain it clearly in the first place or if you misunderstood what I was trying to say.

I am not as familiar w/ Montgomery's work as you but I think over all he did a fair job...he did wear out that laugh a bit early though.... works a lot better on a giant gray rabbit then on him. Montgomery was in some great movies, including *Here Comes Mr. Jordan, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, They Were Expendable* and *Ride the Pink Horse*. Anyone who hasn't watched any of those movies probably should - and they'd enjoy them, I'm sure.

*What are some of your favorite films that feature masquerades or a costume ball?* As promised earlier, here are some screencaps from the costume ball in *The Pink Panther*

Music from Before Sunrise TCM Screening room
Film_Fatale replied to willis2344's topic in Information, Please!
Hi Willis, welcome to the boards. So they show *Before Sunrise* on the UK version of TCM? Interesting. Sorry I don't know what the song is, ordinarily you'd have gotten an answer if the song was from a US promo. You are _definitely_ in the right forum, but if you want to ask in one other thread, you might want to try the "music favourites" thread: http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=121872&tstart=0 -

James Finlayson was in *The Dawn Patrol* with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Irene designed Lassie's costumes? There's a great off-colour joke in there waiting to be made, but I won't be the one

> {quote:title=ChipHeartsMovies wrote:}{quote} > FF, the TCM schedule was set months ago, but at a time when we pretty much all knew what the outcome would be. TCM Programmer just had the temerity to pick this movie at that time. Yes, I would assume that's probably the case. Not sure about the KH theme, though. > > Michelle looked gorgeous in that Isabel Toledo ...cocktail dress? ...what would you call it? I do think she looked gorgeous, she almost always does, she has a very ladylike presence and I adore her. Well, the way you adore a First Lady of the United States. And I don't know what to call the dress other than "beautiful". > > FYI, I have a friend who works in PR at a major mass-market fashion line. The adorable (and NO ONE would argue that) Sasha and Malia apparently wore clothes from their children's line, and the fashion line website overloaded and crashed in minutes after the kids were seen on the tee-vee. They just said what the brand was on CNN. Guess we should avoid giving them free publicity here on the forums?

> {quote:title=cinemafan wrote:}{quote} > The number of posts had nothing to do with the selections, it's obviously the *content* of the posts. With all due respect cinemafan, that is highly subjective. There's _quite a few folks_ here who will, from time to time, reply with a one-liner or just a smiley, even, when they're having a friendly conversation. I'm not pointing out anyone in particular, mind you. But there are quite a few. As administrator of the TCM fans site, I've had a mostly smooth experience, although I did have to ban one individual who has being disruptive. Sad to say, but I have reason to believe that this very immature and childish person came to that site from these forums. Again, not pointing any fingers at anyone, so please don't anyone suggest otherwise. Mostly, I just assume the best about everyone and expect they'll act maturely.

> {quote:title=lzcutter wrote:}{quote} > May some of that compassion trickle down to this lovely outpost where instead of arguing about the inane and the ridiculous, we can find common ground in our love of movies and come together as the community we all it want it to be. I would be all for that, Lynn. Sometimes the arguments may really be about silly issues, and I would hope we could all just get along and, like you said, find common ground in our love for classic movies. P.S. Tell Frank I hope he's not mad at me!

And to TCM Programmer: BRILLIANT programming choice to put Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? on at 8 PM tonight. If you guys are watching it, you know what I mean....Sidney Poitier meets Katherine Houghton in HAWAII, when Spencer Tracy ask SP "what about the children?" Poitier says "she thinks one of our children could become president." TCM Programmer, if there is an Emmy for Most Apt Programming Choice, you just nailed it. WELL DONE! Wasn't the schedule for January pretty much set by the day of the election? I don't know, if it was a conscious choice, good job; otherwise it might just have been a coincidence. But I think they also played *Guess...* right around Election Day. What did everyone think of Michelle's dress?

What's saddest is that even people who've worked with Disney in preparing some of their DVDs for release don't really expect this to change any time soon. -

Your 2009 Summer Under the Stars Wishlist
Film_Fatale replied to sweetsmellofsuccess's topic in General Discussions
*What are your suggestions?* I would love to see them getting enough movies from Fox to include a star that hasn't been done or not in a long time here at TCM. Maybe not Shirley Temple, because her movies are so easily available on DVD. And I remember they had a day for Richard Widmark, but I'm not sure how many of those movies were Fox titles. But maybe Alice Faye, or Betty Grable, or Don Ameche; even Tyrone Power (again, with emphasis on the Fox titles). -
I normally love Ava in every photograph ever taken of her. However, I wonder if it's just me or if there is something slightly scary about that photo of her smoking that cigarette. All the other photos are just awesome, though!

Well I think Obama's going to lean towards the center. Naturally a Democratic president and Congress should benefit a wider spectrum of Americans and not only the wealthy and powerful. You gotta get the middle class back on its feet because that's what's going to drive the economic recovery of the country, just like it drove the economic growth of the 50's and 60s'. People should realize that a strong economy is better for everybody, whether you're liberal or conservative or centrist. Gilded Age-style accumulation of wealth has never been a good sign for where the country is headed economically, that was as much true in the 1920s as it has been in the 2000's.
