I opted for recording The Big City and The Emperors Candlesticks precisely because I have never seen a Luise Rainer film all the way through and I wanted to get some feel for what she was like as an actress. I have seen Taxi! and remember liking it. I like most of those early Cagney films.
I recorded those two, as well as *Dramatic School*. Will also be recording *No Greater Glory*, which like *The Big City* is a Frank Borzage film.
Also, if the information on imdb.com is correct, Ms. Rainer is just one year short of her 100th birthday. She is the oldest living Oscar recipient, apparently.

My favourite Alan Parsons song:

If anybody has trouble recording this, I would be more than happy to help out... free of charge, of course.

I can't blame anyone for being upset with Paramount Home Video for all this double- and triple-dipping.
Frankly, even though I upgraded my copy of *Sunset Blvd.* because I heard the transfer was better, I think for those with blu-ray players it's worth waiting until Paramount releases them in that format.

It is a sad day for French cinema, and for lovers of quality filmmaking all over the world.
I first became familiar with his work through *Jean de Florette* et *Manon des Sources*. Also, was lucky to watch *Germinal* in the theater when it came out.
May he rest in peace.

I'm sort of half-watching it right now. I had already made plans to watch it on DVD when it comes out on the 20th. The DVD might just have a little bit more picture detail than the broadcast from TCM, not to mention that I wanted to show my $upport for this DVD release, since it took so long to become a reality and at times it seemed like it would never happen.
Thank you, TCM for showing it, and WHV for releasing it on DVD

Oh I think I'm going to blush!

Chip - there is no guiltier pleasure, for me, than actually owning that fancy collector's set edition of *Showgirls* that came out about 5 years ago. Let's just say... it's been fun at times. B-)

Thank you for mentioning it Frank. I've been meaning to rent that DVD. And "hi" to you, too.

CK - Frank said "hi" to you, too!
(OK, just kidding!)
I believe I've checked that book out of the library at least once. You're very lucky to have gotten such a nice present from your mom.

Lynn - that sounds like a very interesting project, hopefully it can all be edited into a long documentary and released to the public at some point.
Doesn't Patrick Stewart have the loveliest voice? :x

Repeat yourself? It would be totally unlike you, CK.

Too bad you can't convince all your movie-loving friends to join the TCM forums. They would probably enjoy it here as much as you do. B-)

I just realized I forgot to mention Paul Muni. He was also very good - I think he was good in almost everything he was in. And the special effects, also excellent for their time.

I don't think I'd noticed anything like that, consciously at least. TBH, I have to look at a photo of Beyonce to remember what she looks like. But you're probably right - and that's a great kind of a smile for a performer to have

-
harlowcutie, I don't think it's creepy at all - it's very lovely, in a hi-tech kind of way, of course. I wish I had the kind of software you'd need to do that on your own.
Mind if we post it at the TCM fans site, as well?

Yes, Charles, it was *Coroner Creek*. I realized that TCM actually did show this Columbia western, a couple of years ago.
-
Thank you very much for posting the article. I am looking forward to this Western very much. B-)

The tcm database (tcmdb.com) lists it as 81 minutes and doesn't mention any alternate versions. I can't seem to find any reference to a longer version (although of course that doesn't automatically mean it doesn't exist).
However I agree with the person who previously pointed out that TCM's policy is to always get the most complete, unedited version available. The only situations where they don't is if the distributor is unable to provide one. It's possible that for most movies, TCM is limited to licensing whichever version is available from U.S. distributors - although Europe's Studio Canal seems to be acquiring U.S. rights to a few movies and making them available to TCM.
Hopefully, this thread will come to the attention of tcmprogrammr and maybe he'd have a better idea about any alternate/unedited versions.
Welcome to the boards!

Do you think the Centennial Edition would be worth getting because of the extras, or because of the transfer? Personally if a title is being re-issued I prefer to wait for the reviews to decide whether it's really worth an upgrade or not. A lot of the time, it isn't.
-
By the way Charles, I was trying to look up the title of the movie you mentioned the other day, also MIA, that I think starts with a C... *Crooked* something?
-
TCM's schedule lists the 81-minute version, which seems to be the complete one.

Hey, everyone makes a mistake. I'd changed the title in my post because I'd figured the guy who uploaded it to YouTube might have gotten the title wrong

That would be another way to go!

Well, it's not pan-and-scan, apparently, but an unmatted version of the movie, which seems to have been shown in 1.85:1 in theaters (not anamorphic widescreen).
