  1. There are at least 3 clips. One is the animated one that looks like the Edward Hopper paintings with the song about the sunny side of life and this has the woman brushing her hair and the truck driving past. Another clip is the train going by with the windows of the apartments (this is the one from "Somebody Up There Likes Me") and they show it right before a movie begins. The other clip is seen late at night and shows real people (not animated) in a coffee shop, a ticket seller at the movies smoking a cigarette, and also the woman in the fur shop. The woman in the fur shop is a very similar to a scene from "Killer's Kiss".
  2. I'd like to see a month of Ida Lupino (and include the movies she directed too), Robert Ryan, the Barrymores (all 3 together), and William Powell. Jean Arthur and Claudette Colbert would be a lot of fun to watch too as stars of the month.
  3. gnfoshay- The part of the intro you are talking about (the woman upstairs, I think in a fur shop, taking her earrings off and undressing) is a copy of a scene from "Killer's Kiss", an older Kubrick movie. TCM showed this movie about a month or so ago and I saw the scene and recognized it from the TCM intro.
  4. It seems like all are optomistic about the host changes for weekend viewers. I should be too and will have an "open mind" when Mr Mankiewicz begins his hosting.
  5. I watched the British version of Gaslight on Sat, July 19 on TCM (hope you got to see it too) and was impressed with Mr Walbrook. However, it's the only movie I have seen him in. He was very good.
  6. I just saw on "Movie News" on this site that TCM will have a new weekend host starting Sept 6. The weekend host will be Ben Mankiewicz (he's related to the Hollywood Mankiewicz family) and the press release says he will give a "fresh perspective" to viewers and to new viewers too. Had anyone else heard about this? Or did I just miss out on this? The press release did say that Robert Osborne will continue to host in the night-time but I still have a sick feeling that things perhaps might change on our beloved TCM. Please share your thoughts on this bit of news.
  7. I recently saw The Black Swan on the big screen at the Egyptian in Hollywood. It was absolutely stunning. The images of the ships, the sea, and of course Tyrone Power and Maureen O'Hara were breathtaking. It was a double feature with Captain from Castille, another beautifully filmed movie.
  8. Does TCM have a listing of all the previous stars of the month on this website? I've only had TCM a short while and would love to know who has been featured already.
  9. Yes mongo, that was terrific! I nearly spilled my drink laughing so hard.
  10. Hmmm.. It's true that there are so many to choose from. I 'll just list them since they had careers that spanned several decades. Paul Newman Cary Grant James Stewart (there's just something special about him) Gregory Peck
  11. I'd like to find out what really happened to Paul Bern, Jean Harlow's husband. I know a lot has been speculated, but I've wondered about the truth. Did he commit suicide or was he murdered? And what about the note found at the scene - I wonder if it was left there by someone else.
  12. I think the life of star of the month, John Garfield, is very tragic. At the age of 39 he had a heart attack. It's been suggested that the Hollywood Blacklisting was the cause of that heart attack. Talk about being cut down in your prime.
  13. Now I'm in the mood for a good old-fashioned mystery. Something like And Then There Were None from the 1940's (which I've watched at least 15 times). Any suggestions?
  14. Hi I too really enoyed The More the Merrier and that is a terrific choice. Another film that is guaranteed to make you laugh often is The Major and the Minor with Ginger Rogers. She is a young woman in New York who is fed up with the city. She decides to move back home and only has enough train fare for a child's ticket. So, she dresses like a child, has a con man buy the ticket for her, and then many hysterical situations happen. I love this movie.
  15. Actually, Greer Garson married the actor who played her son in Mrs. Miniver, not the Nazi pilot. I believe they were divorced within a few years. His name is Richard Ney.
  16. Notorious with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman is very romantic and one of my all time favorites. Cary Grant is the government agent who is hesitant to fall for bad-girl Ingrid Bergman. Then he just stands by while she marries another man to gather evidence for the U.S. All the time Cary and Ingrid really want each other but will not admit it. What a terrific movie!
  17. I just saw the bio on John Garfield. I thought it was very informative and gave a good overall view of his life and work. I felt it was too short though. I wasn't bothered at all by actors like Joanne Woodward and Danny Glover discussing their thoughts and opinions about John Garfield's work. I felt it added insight. It would have been nice to have more actors who actually worked with Garfield, but I realize some may have passed away or perhaps were not available to be interviewed. Julie Garfield did a nice job narrating. They could have easily spent two hours on a biography of John Garfield.
  18. You can still search the TCM Library. Choose "Schedule" on the choices up above. Then click on "Search the Schedule" which is on the lower left side. When you get to the next page you will see "Search the TCM LIbrary" on the bottom.
  19. Hey coffeedan, thanks for the tip on the feedback. I finally found an answer for the opening to the movies with the el train going by. I have often wondered what was happening in those apartments behind the train and now I know. In case anyone reading this wonders what the answer is under, look for "Nosey Neighbors". I've been on TCM's site countless times and just never bothered to look at the feedback site..
  20. "A Place in the Sun" with Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor is one of the most memorable for me. When he is walking off to the gas chamber and the images of Taylor are shown, that always makes me want to cry. How tragic.
  21. The movie is Lover Come Back with Doris Day and Rock Hudson. I think the product that they all got drunk on was called "Vip". Very funny movie.
  22. Could it be "The Unholy Three" from 1925 with Lon Chaney? Chaney plays a ventriloquest who masquerades as an old lady to front a crime ring. Check out imdb.com for more plot summary. I don't know about the country manor though..
  23. I too am upset about AMC. TCM is now the only true "classic movies" station. Many cities in the area where I live (Southern California) do not offer TCM, but rather have AMC. Right now we have TCM (our city's cable offers it) but we are looking to buy a house. I am definitely trying to find a house in a city that offers TCM through its cable. I don't think I could do without my daily dose of Turner Classic Movies and I hope I won't have to do without.
