Interesting tidbit. Gene Tierney, all of 20 years of age, was originally considered by Fox to play the cockney prostitute. She would probablycome.across as having been miscast. Of course, she didn't do it, probably because she was being loaned out by Fox, being miscast as halfbreed Egyptian and Eurasian exotics.

Miracle on 34th Street in theatres a jip

Horrible idea. Why waste precious funds colorizing. So much better to spend the money to restore films, digitizing or.whatever. There are thousands of worthy titles, instead of that.awful colorization. Jmo. -

Marilyn Monroe for [Insert month here] SOTM!
Arturo replied to speedracer5's topic in General Discussions
I remember reading as.a kid, in a book on Marilyn, a.description of.a(Travilla-designed?) outfit MM was.wearing, and the author saying that designers east of the Mississippi were probably shaking their heads in disgust. So Marilyn, in her tight revealing (for the time) get-up, was considered on the vulgar side in her manner of dress. Times change! -
Audrey Hepburn's instant stardom, largely due to this film, is pretty amazing. It seems Paramount was quickly aware of her screen.magnetism, and tried to sign her exclusively. A project that might've been perfect for her, the ingenue in FOREVER FEMALE, was probalbly deemed not important enough, what with others like Ginger Rogers sharing the spotlight. So Pat Crowley got it, and the rest is history. Or at least, she is history, not having that special spark that Audrey did.

We missed spotlighting that Joan Bennett was on TCM last night, as the cockney streetwalker in MANHUNT. This movie marked several firsts for Joan. It was her first film.with director Fritz Lang, as well as her first noir(ish) film, both of which she would have several more significant entries in the next decade or so. It would also be her first film at 20th Century Fox since her brunette phase and concurrent new image. She would do several other films there in the next few years, as part of a non-exclusive contract with the studio.

Actually it's Marjorie Main. Mary Boland was a guest at Main's dude ranch for 6 weeks.

Sorry you missed the beginning Hibi. But the important thing is you saw most of it, and in the way it was meant to be seen, and having seen it before, you didn't really miss anything. Even though most of the films shown by Fathom I've seen (many times) before, I try to make it to see them each month, to support the effort for more classic films on the big screen.
-
I also saw it last night, getting there a few minutes late. It was just starting, and I had missed RO's introduction. I don't think these Fathom showings have any previews. Anyway, I had never seen ROMAN HOLIDAY on the big screen. As many times as I've seen it, it was great anyway. Much detail was visble that I had never noticed, and I LOVED the streetscapes of Rome. Baroque is my favorite architectural style, so it was a treat seeing the facades and interiors of the palaces. Of course, I enjoyed the story and the actors too.

I hope you enjoy it when you get around to watching it. After you had stated you had deleted it to make room for WAWTG, and hope you'd record the next showing of it, IF you had watched and deleted WAWTG, I wasn't sure you'd get to FA. Enjoy! -

How Can the TCM Message Boards Improve?

How about changing the view counts, if they can't be gotten rid of, to reflect broad general categories, like with the personal post counts: Newbie, Advanced views, etc. -
TO GRILL.A.MOCKINGBIRD is on now, as this week's Essential.

How Can the TCM Message Boards Improve?
Arturo replied to misswonderly3's topic in General Discussions
How about the rule from the old.message board, that no thread can be added to after a year without posts. Better yet, cannot be renamed after a period of time, say six months. Even better, that if a thread can be renamed, then it should be allowed a maximum of two renamings. These should be hard and fast rules! -
TCM is the best station there is, at least for.my movie interests. Another thing to be thankful for on this (American) Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks for this great thread, helps cancel all the negativity on these boards, including the one where somebody is doing inventory of all TCM's faults; all pitifully petty.

Hilarious! I wonder if the recently published prequel discusses Atticus' grilling of mockingbirds.

Attention Fans of Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich
Arturo replied to TomJH's topic in General Discussions
Tom, great writeup. I too enjoy this sophisticated comedy, and the stars and their chemistry. One comment: John Gilbert, Dietrich's current lover, had been slated to be the costar, but died before the start of production. It could have bee a game-changer for him, resurrecting his moribund career. Too bad we shall never know. -
I love watching the TCM promos for the monthly lineup. It whets my desire to watch what's coming on. Unfortunately, by the time I actually SEE the promo, the month may be half over, or more, and I invariably already missed some if what I would've wanted to watch. Lol.

Happy belated thanksgiving to all, and very belatedly to our Canadian friends. Hope and wish for the best in everyone's health and well-being, including your four-legged and/or feathered family members. I spent Thursday cooking and cleaning, as my house was the scene of the family gathering this year. Everything turned out great, and even my brother who does the in-law thing showed up, with some of his in-laws. After all the football, somone put it on TCM, and people seemed to enjoy STATE OF THE UNION. Yesterday, the only Black Friday activity I did was go to the quarterly Fire Sale at the local bookstore, where selected used books sell for $2.00. I spent $65.00, getting.mostly movie biographies and film books; Lord knows how much I'd spend if I wandered into other areas. Again, wishing blessings and health to you and yours in the holiday season.
