Horrible idea. Why waste precious funds colorizing. So much better to spend the money to restore films, digitizing or.whatever. There are thousands of worthy titles, instead of that.awful colorization. Jmo.

I remember reading as.a kid, in a book on Marilyn, a.description of.a(Travilla-designed?) outfit MM was.wearing, and the author saying that designers east of the Mississippi were probably shaking their heads in disgust. So Marilyn, in her tight revealing (for the time) get-up, was considered on the vulgar side in her manner of dress. Times change!I came a cross some sketches Travilla did for the costumes in GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES.
They are amazing.

Audrey Hepburn's instant stardom, largely due to this film, is pretty amazing. It seems Paramount was quickly aware of her screen.magnetism, and tried to sign her exclusively. A project that might've been perfect for her, the ingenue in FOREVER FEMALE, was probalbly deemed not important enough, what with others like Ginger Rogers sharing the spotlight. So Pat Crowley got it, and the rest is history. Or at least, she is history, not having that special spark that Audrey did.

We missed spotlighting that Joan Bennett was on TCM last night, as the cockney streetwalker in MANHUNT. This movie marked several firsts for Joan. It was her first film.with director Fritz Lang, as well as her first noir(ish) film, both of which she would have several more significant entries in the next decade or so. It would also be her first film at 20th Century Fox since her brunette phase and concurrent new image. She would do several other films there in the next few years, as part of a non-exclusive contract with the studio.

I had no idea that Mary Boland was still alive and at the TCM ranch!
Actually it's Marjorie Main. Mary Boland was a guest at Main's dude ranch for 6 weeks.

Well, I went. The stupid theater's website had the wrong starting time. I got there at 7:30, only to find out it apparently started at 7pm! Audrey was already in Peck's apartment (You Have My Permission to Withdraw!) I was ROYALLY P-SSED. I thought about leaving and getting my 12.50 back, but decided to stay (not like I didnt know what came before) Luckily they must've shown some previews and R0's introduction took some time (he had an outro too) so I probably missed 15 mins of it.
I did enjoy the film, and time passed quickly (I thought I'd be bored after seeing it so many times, but I wasnt) Was great to see it on a BIG screen this time and print was clean and pristine. There were about 20 or so people there. More than I'd expected. I'll never trust website showtimes AGAIN!!!
((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((Sorry you missed the beginning Hibi. But the important thing is you saw most of it, and in the way it was meant to be seen, and having seen it before, you didn't really miss anything.
Even though most of the films shown by Fathom I've seen (many times) before, I try to make it to see them each month, to support the effort for more classic films on the big screen.

Anyway, I had never seen ROMAN HOLIDAY on the big screen. As many times as I've seen it, it was great anyway. Much detail was visble that I had never noticed, and I LOVED the streetscapes of Rome. Baroque is my favorite architectural style, so it was a treat seeing the facades and interiors of the palaces. Of course, I enjoyed the story and the actors too.

YES!!! Finally got a recording of it! Havent watched it yet though. Hope it was worth sitting through What a Way to Go! to make space for it (LOL).
I hope you enjoy it when you get around to watching it. After you had stated you had deleted it to make room for WAWTG, and hope you'd record the next showing of it, IF you had watched and deleted WAWTG, I wasn't sure you'd get to FA. Enjoy!

How about changing the view counts, if they can't be gotten rid of, to reflect broad general categories, like with the personal post counts: Newbie, Advanced views, etc.

No more than one thread a week.can be started.by any individual.
No personal name of the thread initiator, in the third person, in the title of the thread.

How about the rule from the old.message board, that no thread can be added to after a year without posts.
Better yet, cannot be renamed after a period of time, say six months.
Even better, that if a thread can be renamed, then it should be allowed a maximum of two renamings.
These should be hard and fast rules!

TCM is the best station there is, at least for.my movie interests. Another thing to be thankful for on this (American) Thanksgiving weekend. There was no channel like TCM when I was a kid. I used to scramble around, trying to find the films and stars of the Hollywood Golden Era wherever I could - usually The Late Late Show on a few TV channels, though, sometimes the older films would be on the tube during the day time hours, as well.
Living in Canada,. I will always have an eternal indebtedness to TVO and movie host Elwy Yost for providing me with the first time opportunity to view many films of the studio era. Not only that but Elwy had interviews with many of the stars, directors, etc., as well. I also went to a lot (and I do mean a lot) of presentations of old films at Toronto retrospectives (spent a lot of time in library basements, or wherever they could rent the space to put down a few chairs and a movie projector).
But all of this scrambling around was because that was the only way to see the older films if you had a real love for them.
Now, thank God, we have TCM. So when I see a thread on the boards complaining about some aspect of the channel, much of it often pretty damn petty stuff (like, oh, no, are they showing that film again?) I get a little annoyed with those pampered viewers who take so much for granted and don't seem to appreciate just how good they've got it to have a channel like this at their disposal.
Bravo, TCM, for old film buffs, you're the best there is! There's just never enough good things to be said about you.
Thanks for this great thread, helps cancel all the negativity on these boards, including the one where somebody is doing inventory of all TCM's faults; all pitifully petty.

TO GRILL A MOCKINGBIRD
Atticus Finch and his family have fallen on hard times, and have had to resort to shooting mockingbirds for their dinner. They decide to have a huge fund-raising barbeque, featuring smoked mockingbirds. All are invited, including Asta (cleared for rabies), who hopes to be tossed a bone or two from the feast.
The problem is, since mockingbirds are very small, there's not much to go around. Jem, Scout, and Dill were only able to shoot down a couple of the little creatures. They decide to supplement the BBQ'd mockingbirds with buffalo wings, and everybody's happy.
(Except Jem, who is somewhat traumatized by the consumption of the little birds. And Dill, who wanted to season the BBQ'd mockingbirds with dill; this idea was nixed by Calpurnia.)

"Children, there's only one thing that justifies
killing a mockingbird, and that's grilling a mockingbird."

"Now, don't you be sneaking no dill into that BBQ
sauce. It just don't go."
Hilarious! I wonder if the recently published prequel discusses Atticus' grilling of mockingbirds.

Tom, great writeup. I too enjoy this sophisticated comedy, and the stars and their chemistry.
One comment: John Gilbert, Dietrich's current lover, had been slated to be the costar, but died before the start of production. It could have bee a game-changer for him, resurrecting his moribund career. Too bad we shall never know.

I love watching the TCM promos for the monthly lineup. It whets my desire to watch what's coming on. Unfortunately, by the time I actually SEE the promo, the month may be half over, or more, and I invariably already missed some if what I would've wanted to watch. Lol.

Happy belated thanksgiving to all, and very belatedly to our Canadian friends. Hope and wish for the best in everyone's health and well-being, including your four-legged and/or feathered family members.
I spent Thursday cooking and cleaning, as my house was the scene of the family gathering this year. Everything turned out great, and even my brother who does the in-law thing showed up, with some of his in-laws. After all the football, somone put it on TCM, and people seemed to enjoy STATE OF THE UNION.
Yesterday, the only Black Friday activity I did was go to the quarterly Fire Sale at the local bookstore, where selected used books sell for $2.00. I spent $65.00, getting.mostly movie biographies and film books; Lord knows how much I'd spend if I wandered into other areas.
Again, wishing blessings and health to you and yours in the holiday season.

Fox Movie Channel will be showing BRIGHAM YOUNG tomorrow morning, Saturday, 11/28 @ 9:55 am est. Also, on Friday, 12/4 @ 8:35 am est, and Tuesday, 12/8 @ 9:55 am est.In the next couple of days, Fox Movie Channel will show BRIGHAM YOUNG (1940), the second of four movies pairing Linda Darnell with Tyrone Power. Although top cast, they were a peripheral love story fo the main telling of the westward Mormon trek, done obviously as boxoffice duty, to help this expensive epic with paying customers. The studio needed.all the help here it could get, as the fim was its costliest feature until then, and 1940 was a rocky year for movies. In an effort to stress the action of the westward trek over the religious aspect, they added —FRONTIERSMAN to the title. It did well enough, actually a big grosser, but it barely broke even due to its high cost. It has come down in history as a flop.
Dean Jagger played the title role, and BY—F also featured such stalwarts as Mary Astor, Vincent Price, Jane Darwell, John Carradine, and Brian Donlevy. It has some breathtaking scenery, filmed on location. It is better than its semi forgotten status would lead you to think. As for the principals, they do well enough with what they are given to do, with Linda having a second role in a row where she played close to her real age of 16 when it was filmed. With long hair in her first period film, she looks more beautiful than ever. All in all, a worthwhile two hours spent watching this, imho.

Will Joan Bennett be SOTM in May?

Interesting tidbit. Gene Tierney, all of 20 years of age, was originally considered by Fox to play the cockney prostitute. She would probablycome.across as having been miscast. Of course, she didn't do it, probably because she was being loaned out by Fox, being miscast as halfbreed Egyptian and Eurasian exotics.
