When is it showing? I haven't seen the promos for it.
Btw, I saw PSYCHO a couple of months ago, and the two DRACULA movies last month. While the theaters were nowhere near full, each had a decent crowd, from teens on up, and even a few kids even yoinger.

WHAT A WAY TO GOPHER
In which A List star Asta is typecast as a Terrier, who hooks up with a series of ****. With each, he wants the simple life, and just chase and dig after gophers and other rodents. Unfortunately, time after time, Asta.loses his mate, who are victims of road kill, distemper, or sensory loss. Asta ends up with their jeweled collars, water and food dishes, and mauled plush toys. He is soon considered quite the catch.
Asta has a few incidents with acorn-chucking tree squirrels, which shake his confidence to his core, but these scenes build smoothly to the climax, and the satisfying denoument, where the squirrel bearing trees are cut down to the now-wealthy Asta's specifications, to build.a.shelter for abused and/or homeless ****.-

**Of course, it is just now occurring to me that some might find Liz in WHAT A WAY TO GO! something done in bad taste, in re: the whole MIke Todd thing.
Well, a.whole.movie could've been made.about Liz and HER husbands, with similarly unbelievable results, except in her case they were true lol.

Thank you for mentioning Forever Amber. I think Linda is terrific in it, I am reading the best-selling novel and the movie was tamed -down (or subtexted if you prefer) but Linda gave plenty of suggestion with her tease and incredible beauty. I like her in My Darling Clementine and the by all means, A Letter to Three Wives, and Unfaithfully Yours needs to be included.
Linda is good in MY DARLING CLEMENTINE, despite having rather garish makeup and unbecoming hairdos. She holds her own with the male slant of the storyline. As mentioned, she was excellent in the comedy-drama A LETTER TO THREE WIVES. She was quite different, but effective, in the Preston Sturges black comedy, UNFAITHFULLY YOURS, subtly suggesting different moods to accompany the varying murder plots contemplated by husband Rex Harrison.

Arturo--I have some information on this--some I hope helpful, some will add to confusion.
First, the good. I looked up TCM "Reflections in a Golden Eye" & it's in a 4 dvd package that includes:
"A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951), black and white
"Julius Caesar" (1953), b&w
I've forgotten the 3rd
Reflections in a Golden Eye, Technicolor**
the color choices for the 4 dvds are b&w OR Technicolor--Sepia toned, or "Yellowvision" was NOT a listed choice. Please double check this yourself.
To add to the confusion--when I first saw this on videocassette, RIAGE was in black and white--I read in one of Elizabeth Taylors' biographies (I think Dick Shepard's 1974 one) that the sepia toned version was so badly received, it was destroyed.
I don't know if I've helped, or added to the confusion. I Hope I've helped.
Thank you for that. However, the dvd I have of RIAGE is psrt of that boxset, and it has the washed out ("yellowvision") version. What I am looking for is the bluray I think may have both versions. Thanks again.

It seems that the closer one is to being a WASP male, the more threatened one is about anyone belonging to the "other" voicing any legitimate complaints. This thread is the latest confirmation of this on these boards.

Speaking of the theme of films based on Southern writers, specifically last week's showing of REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE, I remember about a year or.so ago, in a discussion of this film, it was mentioned that there was a bluray release of it which featured the full color version, as.well as the washed out version. I have the dvd of the film, which features Huston's vision, but I have always found it a little off-putting, which doesn't help the sordid goings-on. With the poor.original reception of the washed out print, and susequent theatrical release of the full-color version, I knew of its existence. Plus the trailer shown on tcm, in full color, whetted my desire for it.
Can anyone here shed light on this?

I heartily agree. "Sunday in New York" is another such film. It's like they have one foot in the innocent production code era and the other foot in the growing counterculture movement of the 1960's. As a result, nothing works well.
I think that's it exactly. These early 60s sex comedies felt they were so liberated, and liberating,.from the code.movies that.came.before. They have an air of self-congratulation about them, which is rendered "quaint" or "dated" with the truly liberated films.that came.after.

How could I forget about Ty since he was clearly the top male star at Fox! Power in the role of Fabian would have been interesting. A point I see here is that it isn't so much that other Fox stars wouldn't have had the guts to play such a role (which could be true but who knows) but instead wouldn't be given the opportunity by the studio due to not tainting their image. Widmark didn't have an image like Power and therefore there was little risk to the studio in casting him as Fabian.
Well,.when you start off as the giggling.psychotic Tommy Udo, there's not much of an image to ruin.

With that wartime p I n u p Betty had, I don't know who you expect to be living next door to you. Even the word "p I n u p" was flagged by our friendly autocensor.
I don't.remember.for sure, but I believe someone said about Betty Grable,."If she's the girl next.door, I'm moving.......next door".

I agree with you and hibi, dated, with the humor forced, and not even that funny. Of course, the stars, costumes and settings make it eminently watchable...... Paul Newman's comedy schtick makes one wish for Jack Lemmon. Another comedy he and (soon to be?) wife Woodward did not make sparkle is 1958's RALLY ROUND THE FLAG, BOYS.Fox Movie Channel has shown this so I've seen it recently, but my memory agreed with yours, that it was overblown and too ham-handed to be really funny. It may be due partially to the director, J.Lee Thompson, who specialized around that time in "big" pictures like The Guns of Navarone and Taras Bulba. The comedy in WAWTG! seems forced and too broad, but it's fun to watch for the stars.
I wonder about Marilyn too, since it could have potentially put her opposite Paul Newman, a combo I would love to have seen, though Newman didn't really seem to shine in comedy the way she did. (In A New Kind of Love he came off as kind of smarmy instead of funny. As he aged, it seems as though he developed a nice wry sense of humor.)

I know this is very subjective, but I view Debbie as much more of a girl-next-door type than Doris. Maybe it's her shorter stature, but there's more.
Well, Doris.and Betty, as well as Debbie, were considered as girl-next-door.types.

Well, I believe O'Hara was up for Isobel, not Sophie. Alice Faye, despite having wanted to get away from.musicals, was so upset after the FALLEN ANGEL.debacle that she flat out refused anything Zanuck offered. Betty Grable was afraid to do drama. She told Zanuck that her fans would expect her to rise fron her watery grave, seaweed and spangles in her hair, to sing. Darnell would probably have done the role.justice, but Anne Baxter is perfect, and won the oscar deservedly imho.I wonder if any of those actresses would have provided the same level of emotional depth Baxter was able to portray. O'Hara maybe. I'm not saying they are not fine actresses but Baxter nailed that role.
-
I find it interesting that Darnell ultimately did not end up in The Razor's Edge, but curiously enough... Gene Tierney is. After reading what Arturo had to say about Tierney versus Darnell, did Tierney end up with the part that was promised to Maureen and later revoked after she blabbed to Linda?
I believe so. I read somewhere that early on, Maureen O'Hara and either Alice Faye or Betty Grable were considered. Both singing blondes turned it down; they were each offered the Sophie part. So O'Hara was probably considered for Isobel, the part Tierney played. Of course, Anne Baxter got Sophie.
-
Darnell was a good actress, but I don't think shed've been right for THE RAZOR'S EDGE. Isabelle needs to be refined and cultured and delicate (at least outwardly)- gorgeous as Linda Darnell was, there's something kind of Proletariat about her- and she brings a world weariness with her that I don't think would've worked for the first part of the story.
I agree. Actually, I think she would been perfect as the tragic Sophie, for the very reasons you state.

Well.tonight TCM.will be showing some.of.Shearer's last hurrahs, as well as.a.couple of the films that were partially instrumental in her deciding to quit. It's been a good month.

I first.read.this.some.10-12 years ago, when I checked it out of the Arroyo Seco branch of the LA library system. Some years later, I bought a copy for $2.00. It was used but in great condition. I agree, a thoroughly enjoyable book. I need to read it again.

"... I watch the ripples change in size but, never leave the stream of warm permanence..."
I may be wrong, but I thought the line said, ".........of warm IMpermanence".

I liked Dan Dailey in I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE 1951, THERE`S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS 1954, and IT`S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER 1955.
I also like him in the two John Ford films he did, WHEN WILLIE COMES MARCHING HOME and WHAT PRICE GLORY. And in some of the Fox musicals: MOTHER WORE TIGHTS, YOU WERE MEANT FOR ME, WHEN MY BABY SMILES AT ME, and YOU'RE MY EVERYTHING. And on the heartwarming CHICKEN EVERY SUNDAY. But he can be tiresome sometimes.

I remember thinking that Daniel Day Lewis' win for THERE WILL BE BLOOD was disappointing and unwarranted, as it seemed.a retread of his portrayal in GANGS.OF.NEW YORK. But at the moment I can't remember who was up against him,.or who I was hoping would win.

I missed this night of films, and recorded.THE HALFBREED, the only film.I don't have on dvd, although I have yet to watch it. Hope it recorded in full.

Dana.Andrews.might've played the role. Cornel Wilde, like Fox' top.male.star, Tyrone Power, was just not given the chance to play such a character, as the studio preferred them as swashbucklers or in other films to take advantage of their matinee idol personae. Cornel did do a decent noir in 1949, SHOCKPROOF, but over at Columbia. Power had done NIGHTMARE ALLEY, but its relative failure and the outcry of his fans meant that Zanuck would not allow him to play another unsavory character. He would've been great imho in NIGHT AND THE CITY, or in the Jose Ferrer role in WHIRLPOOL, and Power would've enjoyed playing these immoral.individuals.Not so sure I agree that Fabian is a pathetic loser. Yea, he is a hustler but he pulls off two very successful and fairly intelligent ones getting the financial backing of the wife of the club owner and aging Greek wrestling father of a prominent hood. Due to bad luck the husband believes his wife is having an affair with Fabian and the Greek wrester dies while fighting. Yea, those hustles put in at major risk but it was bad luck that made them turn sour. The noir theme of this film is that Fabian is a guy trying to get his in a corrupt noir setting where things never go as planned. As for other actors wanting changes before they would play the part; the other possible Fox male stars at the time where Dana Andrews and Cornel Wilde. Hard for me to say they wouldn't of played the part of Fabian as seen in this fine film.
PS: to me the pathetic loser is the wife of the club owner. Not only does she get taken by Fabian but she has to return to her husband a man she clearly disposes, pretending she still loves him.
