  1. I especially  enjoyed the following pieces:

"Harvest" from ROBERT MONTGOMERY PRESENTS with Dorothy Gish  and Ed Begley as James Dean's parents. I wasn't familiar with the actor who played Gramps.

"Run Like A Thief" from THE PHILCO TELEVISION PLAYHOUSE. Robert Osborne said this piece was directed by Eva Marie Saint's husband, who became a friend of James Dean.

"I'm A Fool" from THE GENERAL ELECTRIC THEATER with Natalie Wood and narrated by Eddie Albert (as the older version of James Dean's character). This play was adapted from a Sherwood Anderson story. In his introduction to the piece, Robert Osborne commented that William Faulkner said that Anderson's short story was one of the best (or did he say the best?) ever written.

"The Dark, Dark Hours" from THE GENERAL ELECTRIC THEATER with Ronald Reagan (as a doctor forced at gunpoint to remove a bullet from James Dean's partner in crime) and Constance Ford (as the doctor's wife). The girl playing Reagan's and Ford's daughter was not credited.

Even the pieces with weaker stories were fascinating (to me anyway) because of the production elements of the live 1950's broadcasts.

Nice right-up. I recorded the evening of tv shows, but haven't had a chance to watch them yet. Looking forward to the opportunity.

  2. TikiSoo--I'm afraid I made that comment, but the schedule won't let me go back farther than Sept. 10th & I can't find Separate Tables on the schedule--but that sounds a Lot like a comment I made back in late August/early Sept.--at the time I wondered (& yes, I posted it) why it was getting so much air time just before the month featuring him.  As far as I can tell, "Separate Tables" has been replaced by the musical remake of "My Man Godfrey" (1957).  I'm So Sorry if I got "Separate Tables" bumped from the schedule--MMG is watchable, but co-stars the message boards least favorite actress, June Allyson. :(

Edit--I guess my philosophy should be "catch the film when shown"--I didn't figure in TCM's possible schedule adjustments--that's my fault.

And of course said actress was on all day today.

  3. Yeah, it was taken off rather suddenly. They didnt have much time to wrap up the storylines. By that time the storylines were such a mess I guess it didnt matter much. I remember rushing home from school to watch it and being **** when it was preempted for something..........

Before we had recorders. Ancient times! :D

I must be tired right now, but am I correct.to remember a recent (2-3 years ago) DARK SHADOWS movie, an update of the series, with Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper(!). Or was it an update of some other tv show or movie?

  4. I agree that June would be a great month for Marilyn Monroe to be honored as Star Of The Month.

I hope it woud be sooner but I can see the reason for it being in June.

She definitely deserves an entire month.

Nothing less.than an entire month for Marilyn, I agree. She has done enough films,.so if TCM.can get some of her Fox films, on top of the usuaal suspects, it should be totally doable.

  5. The foreign and malevolent waves of spam.seemed to have scrubbed the data used to tabulate the last list. In any case, two or three of the titles got enough hits to have made it a second day onto the Top Ten.

    1. RABY GENTRY
    2. THE KENNEL MURDER CASE
    3. ASTAOLLO 13
    4. PARVO MY SARONG
    5. LIFE BEGINS AT EIGHT OUNCES
    6. ASTA HOLMES IN THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES
    7. A TEAT OF ONE'S OWN
    8. HUMP ALL THE MEN AND A GIRL
    9. THEY SPAY ******, DON'T THEY
    10. THE YELLOWED ROLLS ROYCE

  6. Veronica.Lake did not cut her hair.when the War Dept. requested it. Rafher, she pulled it back, or put it up, thereby diminishing.one of her best.known trademarks. Later, in the late 40s, after the Lake vogue, she cut he hair, but because that was the style of the day. It didn't become her.

  7. LOL. I love Number Two!!! :D

Yes, it's a nailbiting suspenseful movie.till the end.

Btw, I tried to post a new list.yesterday, but my cell was not getting any bars, and it vanished. As I do these on the spot, I will try to remember most of the titles and try again later.

  8. Also in reference to the Oscar clip, I don't think Hayward could possibly have been dressed better either. That is a wonderful outfit she has on, kind of a nod to her role (her character wears a similar nightgown in a famous scene) and it's very elegant, yet sexy. And the gloves are nice too.

Lol. Except that Hayward's Oscar night gown had one of those full poufy 50s skirts. You can't tell from the photos. The top portion looks similar though.

  10. I.missed the.showing the other night. I do remember seeing it as a kid back in the late 70s, on an early cable.channel (Channel Z?), anx liking it. I caught some of Dianne.Carroll's comments.later, and found her.interesting and on target. Let's.get her back.

  11. Arturo, perhaps it seems a little odd for me to put this clip of the introduction of a '60s game show on your Linda Darnell thread. But this is the show on which I recall, as a little kid, seeing Linda appear (she was the centre panelist, if I remember correctly). Being an admirer of the lady at the time, from frequent television broadcasts of The Mark of Zorro, I was both surprised and delighted to see her, thinking her still very, very beautiful. As you look at this clip, try to envision Linda there, if you can, in place of Mary Tyler Moore. At least this brief clip gives you a bit of a feeling for the show. The movie buff in me loved this show, by the way, produced by NBC in the esrly '60s, inasmuch as countless Hollywood stars from the studio era would appear on it as "surprise" guests hiding behind a curtain. It would be something if the show with Linda surfaced one day.[media]

    [media]

Thanks for the great clip, Tom, as well as for the information. Yes, I would love to come across the episode with Linda Darnell, since there are so few opportunities for this in the 1960s. Plus she comes across in a live setting as quite charming and even sexy, as her appearance as the Mystery Guest on What's My Line amply demonstrates. That clip may still be on youtube, although the complete half hour show is also on there. Unfortunately, the comment section was deleted, and no comments can be posted. Not sure what happened there, but some of the nasty comments I alluded to re. Linda's death were being posted there the last time I had seen the comment section. So nastiness and censorship are not just on this site.

  12. Providing Fox would provide it. Years ago on AMC they had a special about the film and put together what scenes were available (not much). Marilyn looked great and nothing appeared amiss (dispelling the rumors she just wasn't "together"....)

Yes I saw that special, and the truncated version of SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE. I have it recorded on a vhs somewhere.

Totally agree she looks beautiful, relaxed.and thinner than she had in awhile. Too bad she couldn't finish it. I'm wondering if it comes as an extra on a Monroe dvd. I would hope that if TCM did have an MM SOTM, that they would show this footage.

  13. Friday, October 2

I see they are trotting out some of Bob Hope’s worst films again.

11:30 p.m.  The Haunting (1963).  This Robert Wise chiller is the pick of the bunch.  Great atmospheric sound effects.  Much better than the CGI-laden remake.

    It.seems that.they are.later Hope films,.from the 1960s.

I love THE HAUNTING,.and agree that.Claire Bloom is the best reason to watch it.
