VALLEY OF THE DOLLS was a good example of what was now allowed, once the code was breaking down in the late 60s, especially after the language breakthrough of WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF the year before.

Unfortunately, by the late 60s, most in the set decoration and prop depts. at Fox, MGM and WB, as well.as.from other studios, were being rejected, along with other employees, as the death knell of the studio system called for fewer and fewer psrsonnel under contract. They could've at least shaped the mobile like a tree, you know, big green circles and ovals with narrower browns and reds at the bottom.
Sometimes I think the set-decoration and prop department at Fox was comprised of rejects from Warner's and MGM.

Well, the book was written quite some time ago. I think if I remember correctly, Linda never got out in the first place. Maybe Arturo would know for sure.
According to the biography "Hollywood Beauty", which was researched in the 70s and 80s, and published in 1991, Linda did not make it out. She, her friend and friend's daughter were on the second floor, and after the daughter jumped out the window, Linda disappeared. She apparently was afraid to jump, and went down the stairs to go out the door. A neighbor saw her silhouetted against the flames, and he tried go go in for her, but she went back in and vanished. She was found on the floor, alive but with burns all over her body. She would not survive much more than a day lster.

Wish I was there. From.her 70s blaxploitation roles to Tarantino's film and beyond, I loves.me some Pam Grier.

What would really be something, and bring in younger viewers, is if TCM and Fathom Productions were to crosspromote Marilyn as SOTM. Each week Fathom could do their two showings on Sundays and Wednesdays, at select movie theaters throughout the country, showing a different iconic Monroe role. There could be lobby displays, lifesized or larger cardboard cutouts, say of Marilyn with her blowing skirt or in the pink satin sheath. Of course, the tie-in to TCM's monthlong tribute should be helpful to both, as young viewers may be drawn in to see films of which they may be familiar only with stills or a short scene. All the more reason that Marilyn should be SOTM. Exposure to her films. I disagree, Marilyn was a wonderful actress and not just in her terrific comedic performances. She was MUCH MORE than the mystery surrounding her death and her love affairs and it's unfortunate and ridiculous that some only judge her on that. TCM should show a mix of her films to showcase how talented she was.
Marilyn as SOTM would accomplish that for some.

I kid you not.

I've never seen that one! I wonder if TCM has ever shown it?
Probably not. It's a 20th Century Fox film, but I'm not sure if it's ever been shown on FMC.
-
By that definition, one can also claim that Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, and Francis The Talking Mule were stars. Though by saying that I'm afraid I've probably given some people ideas.
But TCM has also awarded SOTM honors to plenty of non-"stars" like Sanders: Peter Lorre, Jean Hagen, Claude Rains, Eleanor Parker, and many more like them. What distinguishes these actors or actresses from Sanders?
And unless Donald Trump is the Chairman of the SOTM screening committee, how on Earth can the likes of Toshiro Mifune, Jean Gabin, or Jeanne Moreau not be considered "Stars" under any definition of the word?
I agree TCM.should honor more foreign language.stars as SOTM. Of the "non-stars" you listed, I disagree with Eleanor Parker as one of these. She WAS a legitimate star in the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s. Lorre, Hagen and Rains were character actors, usually featured players in support, but occasionally had leads, usually in programmers or Bs.

With strong circumstantial evidence in the news this week of water on Mars, can the war of the worlds be far behind?

The film I'd most like to see, if Bennett got SOTM, is 1951's THE GUY WHO CAME BACK. Joan costars with Paul Douglas and Linda Darnell, as her husband and his mistress. Also with Billy Gray and Zero Mostel. Of course, if shown, hopefully on a decent copy...........I have a barely fair copy I bought online.

Not sure if it's been mentioned here, but the showing of Shirley Jones tribute to director Richard Brooks has the scene where her character in ELMER GANTRY describes how she had first met Elmer, in terms that could.not have been anything but obvious even then.

Leonard Maltin introduces films that have recently been unearthed in studio vaults. A number of these look interesting.
8 p.m. Why Be Good? (1929) with Colleen Moore.
9:45 p.m. Among the Missing (1934)
11 p.m. Stolen Identity (1953)
12:20 a.m. Five and Ten (1931) I’ve recorded this Marion Davies film before so perhaps this isn't part of the Leonard Maltin vault collection.
3:30 a.m. Three Faces East (1930) I’ve also recorded this Constance Bennett, Erich von Stroheim film on TCM before.
4:45 a.m. Reducing (1931) a Marie Dressler comedy.
I had never seen STOLEN IDENTITY, amd I rather liked this THIRD MAN-inspired film.

You've actually whetted my appetite to know more about Asta.
Don't forget the many anecdotes, confirming Asta's behavior lapses as he ran amok in Hollywood and at jet set locales around the world, once he became a star, in the tell-all biography, "'Scuse Me While I P iss This Guy".

Back Street had the usual impossibly saccharine ending that Hollywood films of that era were forced to be saddled with, but beyond that and the lavish production values, what stood out for me after thinking about it was this:
Susan Hayward, age 43, made a perfectly credible romantic partner for John Gavin, age 30. So credible that it didn't even cross my mind until I remembered seeing Hayward in movies from the late 30's.
I'm sure that there were other movies like that, but I can't think of any where the older woman and younger man were believably romantic in traditional Hollywood terms. I'm not thinking of the two movies with Mae West and Cary Grant, which was about as unlikely a match in real life as Harold and Maude.
In the film.BACK STREET, it doesn't seem.that Susan Hayward is an older woman compared.to John Gavin. They both seemed about the same age, definitely not.their actual ages. And I think it was believable in this respect, since she didn't look noticeably older than he did.

It seems that the concurrent campaigns for Asta and Marilyn Monroe for SOTM has led many to research some.of.the series of films.they did together. Several titles of this group made the top ten thus.

This timeline is not quite accurate. SCUDDAH HOO, SCUDDAH HAY is normally listed in MMs filmography as her film debut she had walkons in a few other films) even though most of her bit was cut out. She is seen briefly in one shot, and survives in a long shot in a canoe. This was under her first contract at 20th Century Fox. Her second bit, in the B teenage drama DANGEROUS YEARS (also at Fox), was actually seen first, due to being released before the other film. After having one 6 month option picked up by the studio, she was dropped in late 1947, after having spent a year at Fox.Well--I just went to look up facts,, & according to TCM's list of Marilyn Monroes' credits, she made her debut in "Dangerous Years" (DY) (1948), which from the plot synopsis sounds like a would-be film noir. She is billed 12th as Evie. Click on "Notes" for "Dangerous Years", & according to that page, her role in "Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!" was cut before that film's release. She did well enough in DY to be given a co-starring role in "Ladies of the Chorus" (1948) a Low budget musical. That led to a bit as Groucho's "straight woman" in "Love Happy" (1949), which led to a bit at MGM in "Right Cross", which led to her bit in "All About Eve", which led to her bit in "The Asphalt Jungle" (all 1950). Falling dominos(sp?). You can't fairly eliminate All of her bit parts--& I have never heard of her debut film. Has anyone else heard of it?
Later, she got another six month contract at Columbia. She appeared promising in her singing, dancing and acting classes, and so,.out of the blue, she got a.lead.in the low budget musical LADIES OF THE CHORUS (if anything, her casting in this was due to a "friend" with influence moreso than her bit in the Fox B film). However, Columbia didn't pick up her option, despite her promise, and she was dropped.after 6 months.
From.there, she did modeling of various sorts, and got the bit in the Marx Brothers' LOVE HAPPY. This had nothing to do with her work in LOTC. She then played a chorus girl in A TICKET TO TOMAHAWK, then got the important Small Part (not a bit) in an important picture THE ASPHALT.JUNGLE, and That got her noticed. Later in 1950, she got another important Small Part in an important film, ALL ABOUT EVE. This led to another contract.at Fox, where several.featured roles in comedies, plus plenty of cheesecakee, finally led the groundwork for her meteoric rise.
The important roles.in TAJ and AAE, were due to an important contact,.Johnny Hyde, who helped her get the second Fox contract.

I've heard this before, and have enjoyed it. What a treat.from a more innocent.time.
I love.the vignette.in RADIO.DAYS with this brodcast, when the Diane Wiest character is abandoned by her date on a lover's lane as he flees in panic. Great scene in a fun film full of great scenes.

The only thing I wouldn't like in a MM SOTM is if part of one night featured films where she had walk-ons (if that), eg SCUDDAH HOO, SCUDDAH HAY or LOVE HAPPY. There are enough films she has done where that would not be necessary. Especially if a more significant part of hers is left about by that type of inclusion.

What.did people think about the other films on the last night of the Susan Hayward SOTM, besides THE MARRIAGE-GO-ROUND and VALLEY OF THE DOLLS?

THE LITTER
Bette Davis stars as the wife of a plantation foreman.in Borneo, who lies to husband Herbert Marshall to cover up that their faithful.dog Asta has not been all that faithful, running off every chance he gets to the neighboring plantation, to be there with the female mutt, who like the tropical.climate,.always seemed to be in heat. Davis doesn't want hubby to know the truth about the mixed breed litter Asta has sired, since it'll ruin his plans to establish a puppy mill. So she pays mysterious Gale Sondagard, in a reprise of her role earlier that year as Cat inTHE BLUE BIRD, to do away with the evidence. Sondagard slashes the pups with her dagger-like claws.

Don't forget about Betty Grable! Next to Marilyn, probably one of Fox's biggest stars.
I am hoping maybe TCM will honor her next year, since she would have been 100 in December of 2016.
Honoring Betty Grable.when she would have turned 100 would be great. However, TCM did not do the same.for Tyrone Power last year, despite a thread about it here. Grable would be a great.and deserving choice.
I didn't forget Grable btw, perhaps THE biggest star at 20th for the longest time. I just mentioned the names of those Fox stars that had a thread pushing them for SOTM, at least those are the ones I remember. There are other worthies of course.

But didn't she die because she went looking for a child in her burning house, in spite of her terrifying fear of fire? What a lot of courage she had.
Yes, supposedly she had made it out, but went back in looking for someone who had also made it out, unbeknownst to her. That was courageous, considering her fears. Although there are ugly rumors on the internet as to what happened.

Of course. The climactic moment of the film is when Asta's lady friend screams, "Dammmm You! Yes I'm a *****, literally, but daaaammmmmm you!"
