  1. I also find it hard to believe that TCM wasn't "expecting" this passing. I realize that this is a morbid thought to even type out. I was actually shocked at the head start Vogue had in the September issue Thinly disguised as some "Look Back Into the Life of Paul Newman" article, it clearly eulogized him. Especially since the actor's health was publically known to be fading, the timing of the article turned my stomache.

The tribute date has been set as I read the comments below. Perhaps time is what was needed...unlike Deborah Kerr's more timely" tribute, Mr. Paul's passing smacked all of us (men included)a little harder and sharper. Maybe we all thought, like some of his movie roles, that he'd beat the odds and live.

I'm sure ithe TCM tribute will be fitting for such a great channel with programming challenges and hopefully as fitting for a final farewell. Nothing, no speech writer or religious figure, will fill all of the expressed devastation.

  2. IZ....If your schedule is voted the best...that means all the movie-brainiacs on this thread not only appreciate your choices but your knowledege of movies. I liked all of the progamming examples and again feel dissillusionment with my own movie ignorance. (Thanks guys)

I loved the character actress nod!

Please accept these movie experts acknowledgement of your programming, if you do indeed win. As someone who could maybe come up with 2 days of disjointed, overlapping made-up-names and times for movies....you should relish the fact that an entire country would watch YOUR choices for a week. (hypothetically).

All of the programming and thought that went into this challenge blew me away. You all need to apply for the job at TCM.

IZ...I read that you have won the most times...therefore to not vote for you. What?

Baby...if you got it...you got it!!

  3. Izcutter...Thank you for recommending "Sin in Soft Focus" to me last Spring. Dynamite book.

The stills are pure art. The information edifying. I cannot get the page size photo of "Human Wreckage" our of my mind. You have created a new Pre-Code fanatic!

    Thanks...Lisa

  4. Common Cin...Listen to Femme. He is with us.

The joy that his philanthropic enterprises will continue to give disabled children at the Hole in the Wall Gang camps, scholarships to students, and numerous buildings donated for the purpose of acting will keep him in our hearts forever.

It was time for his physical body to go...his spirit is and will be ubiquitous with performance and helping others.

    Smile Cin....He's here.

  5. IZ It has been a while but I wanted to thank you for recommending "Sin in Soft Focus". I love having people over and their eyes immediately go to Clara Bow on the cover. As disturbing as the photo is, my favorite is from the lost movie "Human Wreckage". 1923....I never would have even guessed. Thanks

  6. My condolences to the family. Thank you for giving the Hole in the Wall Gang a place by Lake George where my friends daughter just returned from. For her "summer vacation" (which is free to all children... kids transported from the 5 buroughs...with no parents included) she is with other children whose dreams come true.

Sleep well...you left this planet a better place. You accomplished the good works we all should strive for.

  7. Wow...he looks so great and I'm sure RO wants to retire some day.Maybe he could wean us and lessen his evenings so when IT happens...we (or atleast me) do need CPR

I agree with same agish person. MOST importantly the match should be with brains and associations. I prefer a man impeccably dressed (like RO). But someone mentioned Angela Lansbury and the FACTS that she could add before and after movies about personal associatons (I think are so important!!!RO knows so many and how to read personalities) the studio system that she worked in, her positive anecdotes, and of course being a TV producer and in your 50'60's surley adds weight to the TCM purpose.

CLOONEY would look like a substitute clone. NO BAD

    Peirce...hot....debonair....film historian?

Mel Brooks, Reiners, Rob Marshall, Nathan Land I must admit as did the treadling below....Woody

  8. How do you know it was woman who started the thread?

    Prince,Prince,Prince

Just kidding! I actually took a week away from the boards to get my thoughts together. When I bartended years ago, my Professor of Mixology (I know your jealous of my training) said never engage or avoid if asked questions about 1, marriage 2. money 3. politics

I am literally and figuratively surrounded with and by politics 24/7.

I started to watch tcm and then use the message boards because of it.

  9. First Fred...I pulled whatever it was out of my bum and have decided to enjoy TCM movie threads and stay away from anything that turns me into a she-devil.

My husband actually wanted to by an Airstream. He claimed for family time....fishing, fire, marshmallows etc. Or...even for use over weekend.

I hate it that gas is hurting people but it saved my marriage. See...I live 43 miles n or NYC. If there will be weekends "alone".....I assure you a waiter and elevators will be involved.

Then again, the scene with Ricky driving the Trailer home and forgetting to "Brake"!!!!! while looking in 4 different mirrors, could have had some input into "his" (my husband's) decision not to by one for ourselves

    I love that movie...

  10. Iz, You must have been irate.

You even had a "comeback" thread. I never thought that any thing miffed you.

Read your 7th sentence/fragment 3 threads ago. I am right. Period.

If you forgive me after realizing that you DID say (not in these words) that putting some pretty /younger than RO cheesecake for the Essentials will attact a new generation of film-buffs.

I KNOW YOU SAID IT IS NOT A FORUM FOR THESPIAN HISTORY/AND THAT THERE ARE TIMES ON TCM FOR THAT. I GET THAT.

    But again...dude. Think

    Younger generation

    Saturday night

Even if the younger gen is home and flipping channels........TCM is or isn't their bag baby!!!!! There is no....mmmmmmmaybe I'll get nuts tonight watch "The Voyager" starring that lady on Jonny Carson who chain smoked and wore veiled hats.

Stay with me Iz. I also agree with threadling peskegirl (sp) If edifying our future gens about the way film changed the world, who is who and why, is TCM's most challenging goal(and should be) the Essentials is fabulous, but again....not hearing appetizing stuff (NOT A LECTURE) whetting the mouths of our babes for more.

Like below...3 minutes of Roses' use of the words "depth" "imagination" "realm" "holds on to you for days" is not going to hook these guys in. I LOVE ROSE. She is well spoken and I would shake hands with anyone who wore the "string-dress" with Marilyn Manson at an awards ceremony.

I guess, pal we have to come to grips with a gen that has no patience unless they have controls in thier lap,a remote that makes boring or black/white movies go away (unless a boob or a gun comes out) and little memory because they do not have to remember facts....they can push buttons . I have a 15 and 16 yr old (boys) so if you want to bring it....bring it izz.

You know I'm kidding. But either have someone from the movie there and talk before and after about specific topics....or don't bother with the 3 min.

    Have some tea iz

  11. Saw on FXM "A Tale of Manhattan" this morning and perhaps they will replay. TCM has not shown this or a while. I had never seen it or had heard of it.

the 5/6 vignettes that are only linked by a single suit "tail coat" are packed with stars. Made in 1942....did I say packed with stars?

Edward G and Charles L each give one of their ususal seamless performaces. Had to remind myself that they were performing and that's why I could not meter my emotions. The vignettes vary in sugject

  12. As a sworn "Western" hater (except Red River), I was staying over night at a western-has-a-poster-of John Wayne-in living-room and out of sheer boredom watched the new 3:10 to Yuma. Then again and again. I had never seen the original which I was briefed on extensively the next morning by my pal.

2 days ago I watched it. I cannot come up with a favorite for the life of me.

Leg...lost in new story true. but I could not understand Van H's inactivity...almost too cautious inactivity at the original,s beginning. He did mention draught and his families obvious exhaustion. Van was much more walking the fence about the taking the money...Perhaps this silent handicap went over my head.

I liked the new ending...boy shooting enemy/Bale/Crowe negotions. I know I should be saying the original ending....but after all of Van and Genn's progressive and desitigrating mental chess in the hotel room....the wife with a saintly hood on as it starts to drizzle thwarting an escape just seemed. Gosh. I don't know....should have seen original first!

  13. Iz,

You make me sad. I think I disagree with you for the first time.

Did you just imply that TCM is advertizing or "pimping out" Rose? Okay dear...first of all I believe that The Essentials are celluloid versions of history. They are special and precious. Rose is smart...metaphysically smart. Like Philosophy 200 smart. She does know this discipline including musical scores, the importance of writing, and completely seems to give us reasons for reactions on the films. She's good. She's great at the human why...the weird things we do and do not want to admit. She communicates very well.

BUT I hope that TCM is not using her beauty and lovely voice in commercials in actual hopes that a new set of viewers will see her and think of the babe from Quentin Terantio films and somehow say to themselves "OH, my gosh...those Essentials MUST make me like movies...cuz Rose likes them". I do like the commercial when she expresses the "gift" these movies can give. They are...and I love her thinking of just giving them try and you may find something you like.

    A little like begging but...

I do understand your point that most of us are already buffs and sadly can speak most of the actors parts. (On a Saturday night no less). I love the age disparity between RO and RM....I love the roundtable/coffee house intellect the two have. I wish kids in their 20's and 30's were debating film (and it's many era's and ever-changing progress) rather than Lost or American Idol.

I believe TCM has it or it doesn't.(it does) I believe e.e.Cummings has it or he doesn't. I believe Coleridge and Shakespeare have it or they don't. THEY ALL DO

We are at a point when we do not need to ask people to watch something of such value. Rose is great....The Essentials are great....listening to facts and someone elses opinions are great.

    But guess whose better?

Us lonely, TCM-watching, crying and shhhshhhing our kids movie buffs. We are the "teachers". And we better get to work It took me weeks to read Milton and I hated it...and there are films that I hate and watch. But wether funny, boring, or sad...drag your friends or family in front of the tube..Rose or whoever and RO will intro and off it goes. AND Iz I do like the insider facts! Heck...knowing that half the poets I read were addicted to laudenum made it more 98.6.

Film is a historical record of us humans for over 100 years. We do not need cheesecake to sell it.

  14. Prince,

I should have clarified a point. It was not on any TCM related venue that there was any anti-war speech making.

My point was that both BM (ha-ha) and Fields have IN THE PAST clearly verbalized their own political views. BM has a show that has been mentioned below and he has the RIGHT and the Privilege (thanks to certain people who protect this right) to say what he wants.

Fields used her "celebrity" to vent anti-war sentiments at an awards ceremony....also her Right and Privilege. Although tacky and unfortunate to awaiting actors on a special night produced for their art acheivement...she most certainly could say her beliefs.

I was glad to hear that the forum of GP resists this and celebrates these performers and their choice of movies. Even if they sat silent and chose all movies that I may find out of TCM's realm of decorum, too stinking bad for me. Although I am sure RO would have classed the session up.

Do I think that now to get even we should have GP's that are prone to ultra concervatism? Gosh no...how boring either way.

For the next 4 months...I was trying to explain that the GP's just delight in their art. Have you ever heard that you never get a second chance at a first impression? Most Hollywood has views that are not like mine...who cares? The world will go on. But sorry...I'm human. If GP Smith for example, has just over to some country telling a despot that he's a great man...you could not get me to turn on TCM even if RO promises to do the show nude. I don't care what movies the "we only care about movies forum" he's chosen.

TCM is all I watch...no news, no crazy debates. I just made a suggestion for TCM to do what they do best...stick with the making and love of movies and perhaps try to choose an artist,,,athelete...comedian etc that will enlighten us about their love of acting.

Tacey Ullman, Tim Roth, Trebek...etc I actually learned from them.

  15. Along the lineof his charity work....he attended a college in Ohio called Kenyon. At the time it was all boys. Very nice and small and this year is one of the 10 most expensive schools in the country. His family owned a sporting goods store(2)? and so he is known in Cleveland for that reason as the stores were famous.

Both my brothers went to Kenyon (now co-ed) and the theater and dance buildings that he(Paul) has had built are amazing. Of course I did not get accepted and went to a nearby default school and was a dancer. We used the wrestling room.

I remember the dance building as if were yesterday. These buildings are for minors...not majors(don't know now...its been 20 yrs). Kenyon is not Julliard. The very scope/modernity/ and meditative setting of the art buildings in the woods still makes me think of just ONE act of kindness done years ago.

So, it did not surprise me when mom read that Mr. Newman pledged $50.000.000.00 worth of scholarship money.

So along with his many "hole in the wall gang" camps (some are ski resorts remade for special needs equipment) that NO CHILDREN PAY FOR no matter the background, and the gosh knows what else he does anonymously....I just hope with smokes and booze he is getting enough painkillers to never feel mortal pain again.

Paul, I wish you could stay...but I have a feeling you did everything in your power to relieve the suffering of others. You have got to be drained. AND please don't waste away. I'm sure you dream of seeing your son again. Better be in racing form!

  16. July 30

    The Old Dark House

Charles Laughton so young and chubby, a naughty partner swap, and watching the old girl Mrs. Femm eat makes my day. I thought those who had family mansions should use table manners?

But....seeing Gloria Stuart who is rain soaked, scared, can't seem to shut a vicious window, and who is in imminent danger.....change for a proper "dinner" is outstanding. Wish she had that damn "Heart of the Ocean" necklace she could have worn!

  17. Happiness is reading about your daughter in the service, so far away, and listening to your pride. I have an 16 yr old and can't imagine him doing what his father does. Happiness is knowing that if you can see life for your daughter in such a tough occupation...and realizing her wealth to future generations....then I can too.

The fine line of happiness and abject fear wanes when I read your thoughts.

  18. Izcutter...I purposely did not watch Bill Maher's night.

I hope he was polite to R.O. and I do not know what political, if any, snipes he took,

I agree with whomever the Guest Programmer is, the moral baggage is left behind. I just didn't trust him not to throw shots at what is my husband's life...his dedication...and to oathes he has taken,

Again...I will not watch Sally Field for the same reasons. My choice...Her Emmy speech had nothing to do with her art and I suspect the same cheap shots on her GP night as I did with Mr. Maher.

It does seem "odd" to me that both GPs in a row spew anti-war diatribe.

It would be nice if for the next 4 months the GP was one of character and realized how lucky they are to sit in front of RO. Some one whose passionate political beliefs do mix with their art.I would like to watch movies again.

so I am replying to your message in hopes of future GPs that want to concentrate on their art for an evening.

I beleive that this the next four months

  19. Thanks for article as well! I unfortunately watched "The Party" for the wrong reason I had just seen a Dominick Dunne on court TV and one of the few movies Claudine made in the U.S. was "The Party". She had that incident in Aspen....killed or accidently killed her boyfriend in the 70's.

I remembered that Peter Sellers was the star.

By chance it was shown (not this time on TCM) and I could not take my eyes off Sellers. The silent movement of the gathering was hypnotoc. Sellers had always been a favorite and his trying to fit in the crowd/join in was funny yet uncomfortable. I have been the odd-ball out so many times at functions I was telling him what to do via the TV.

It is a film that should not be remade. It is magic and its on film. Blake caught it.

I love Steve Martin but he didn't even come close to the Sellers "it" in the Panther remake. I thought him arrogant for even thinking he could emulate Sellers.

My favorite movie "Being There " has an ending that I prefer to Sellers truly leaving us with. The mystery of his personality and genius for comedy simply strolled away.....again magically.

There is no remake....let it go.

The 3 pages that Sellers received for "The Party" clearly describes how a unique and once in life time comedian can create a 2 hour laugh storm. Blake knew it and this became "The Party" in full. Let's not try to turn Seller's humor and talent into something you buy at Wal-Mart.

I just posted reply to you on the other thread suggesting next summer's focus to be on Native Americans.

    OOOps.

Cannot agree more with the fact that filmakers filmed. There was no cross-cultural sympathy then and if Kate Hepburn could sell more tickets with scotch taped eyes well...then they filmed.

Authenticity was hardly a goal and I also enjoy the summer series because of this.

I also agree to a point, as a white and female, that roles did not exactly portray us the most favorable light. We were always slapping somebody and whining about $ or shooting out kids at an alarming rate. We were gossipy and played bridge.......

wait thats all still true except the bridge part!

smile. Maybe we (and our ancestors) are all of the images, bad and good, that have ever been filmed....at one time or another!
