  1. Have watched a few episodes of Big Bang Theory, but just can't understand its attraction.

Because my kid said she liked it, I have tried. Several times. I just can't do it.

I have not been able to put up with that thing for more than 10 minutes, tops. Has to be the most injudicious use of a laugh track I've ever experienced - it bursts forth every 10-15 seconds over absolutely nothing.

It's as bad as the one they use for 'How I Met Your Mother', which I also haven't been able to watch to the completeness of an episode.

  2. tcm has been showing their fixed catalog of films far too much and for far too long. it's a simple as that. at some point minor consideration for the afflicted oughta kick in.

Afflicted, huh? And you get how many stations?

  3. Problem is, I like a lot of b movies, spaghetti westerns, shlocky type of stuff. Anything that tries to break rules because I hate censorship. And I guarantee those films are not on any list !

Yeah, something tells me 'I Spit On Your Grave' or 'Ilsa: She-Wolf of the SS' won't be on the list.

  4. On another, but possibly similar tack, MY mother refused, for some reason, to watch ANY movie that had ROBIN WILLIAMS in it!

SHE claimed---"I have NO interest in ANY of that SMUT!"

"Smut"?  I don't recall any of William's movies being pornographic , which I've always associated as being "smut".

I'm sorry I never got her to clarify what she MEANT by that.  Just, something in her tone suggested it was best not to pursue it.

She was probably confusing him with Richard Pryor or something.

  5. Yea Straw Dogs shook me up too when I saw the film at the age of 18 or so.    Very intense.       I assume the PC crowd object to the rape scene (as well as others) but that scene does tell us about the inner workings of the various characters involved and served a purpose related to the storyline.

Yes - and it also illustrates that sexuality can be complex, with hidden longings and conflictive impulses. There are many who do not want that to be acknowledged  - who do not want it to be so.

  6. They definitely aren't boring and they were made between the end of what was left of the Hayes Code and what for all intends and purposes is the PC "code" that we have in place now.

Yep. I just watched Peckinpah's 'Straw Dogs' from 1971 on DVD. That's one that gets a fair amount of hate from today's PC crowd, I believe.

When I watched it at the age of 21, it shook me - but not for any PC reason. It's intense, reaching into one's subconscious fears about one's worth and capability - as a husband, as a man, as a civilized being.

  7. 'Daughter of Horror' (1955)

It was originally called 'Dementia' (1953) but exhibition was disallowed by the New York censor board at that time (who the hell knows why - society was insane about keeping dark art away from our eyes).

Wonderful movie. Here's IMDb's page on it:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047976/reference

Wikipedia also has a page - search for 'Dementia (1955 film)' to access it. The Rotten Tomatoes site has a couple of well-written reviews.

  8. Well close;   She should have only watched Doris Day films.

But weren't most of Doris' 60's movies about the leading man pursuing her sexually? Sounds a bit saucy for a 31 year old who'd find 'Splendor in the Grass' too "fresh".

  9. If MOVIES was to show 70s movies you like, that other stations are not showing,  would you watch MOVIES?

    No.

    I don't watch AMC, so I can't imagine I'd watch MOVIES! either.

I'll just keep searching for the unedited versions on dvd, on TCM, online.

  10. No it's not a premium channel. It does show many Fox films that aren't seen very often. An example is LUCY GALLANT. It was on MOVIES last week, and hasn't been seen on basic tv stations in many years.  I'm in the middle of a battle with Comcast about the Movies station. Some fool programmed the guide incorrectly so that it says it's only braodcast in HD. Not so. Older cable boxes are unable to overide what the idiot did when he programmed the guide incorrectly, so I haven't been able to access the station. It's a basic station that's shown in SD.

This has been an ongoing problem since Jan 1. Suppose to be fixed by tomorrow, let you know how worthwhile the station is.

    Thanks, lavender.

  11. One good thing MOVIES does is they don't edit to fit a time slot.   But yea,  lots of commercials and they do edit for content (but by blocking out the content instead of cutting out the content).      But since they broadcast over the air they censor content that even AMC doesn't censor.

Which begs the question - why would I care what they show?

It's not a station I would ever watch. I get AMC in my cable package and don't ever watch any movies on it.

  12. My mother just quit watching SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS because it was FRESH.

Obviously my octogenarian mother has never watched SHAMPOO or any of many MANY other films from the 1960s to our time that stretched the limits of what is allowable in a movie.

    Octogenarian?

Are you sure she hasn't been lying about her age? Sounds well over a hundred to me.

  13. It's not available around here, but from what I understand it's just another commercial-loaded movie channel that runs the same edited versions that other channels run.

    So just another AMC?

Hardly seems worth talking about, let alone provoking any "big question".
