Clearly Lou Reed was thinking about Marilyn Monroe, and how her life might have turned out for her (or not) had she lived. Perhaps things might not have gone so well for her. She might have gotten heavy (she was always battling her weight) and started hanging around unsavoury places.
I believe she had only another couple of movies in her and would have given up on America within the next few years - moved to Europe and become a recluse, like Brigitte Bardot.

I remember a time, before Whitney Houston came along and turned everyone into ridiculous over-singers, when there was great beauty and dynamism combined with restraint in our pop engenues - such as what we had in the wonderful Dionne Warwick.
So, it's really nice to discover a retro style of singing like that still today, like here with Phox.

The one I'm thinking have has lyrics something like "put on your best James Dean".
Well, there are a LOT of songs that mention James Dean (Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side' just came to mind) so it might take some time to find the one you're thinking of.
Unless Dargo's found it with 'Jack & Diane'?

So YOU'RE going to resurrect the Threadys?
Resurrect? I'm not Jesus, dude.
-
That's not the one I'm thinking of.
Would it be Don McLean's 'American Pie'?

Should the performances of method actors be discounted?
Of course not.
Olivier prepared for his performance in his way, Hoffman in his. It's a toolbox and each craftsman uses whatever tools work best for them to achieve the result they envision.
If any person believes that Olivier's teasing quip to Hoffman represented any serious statement about acting, they're an idiot.

My favorite was the "thready awards" one - but I noticed you didn't list it.
Probably because TB removed it, huh?

I actually do a pretty good Holly Hunter impression. I'm a big fan of hers.
Now, see - that's something I couldn't possibly understand. There may be actors I have less dislike of, but I can't think of any at this moment. Don't ask me why, though - I don't exactly know - there's just something cold and re pelling to me about her.

I feel that music was way over-used in movies - especially in the studio era, but also in many movie of the 70's and 80's.
I feel that one director who uses music very, very well in his movies is Eastwood. The usage is subtle and always supportive; never overwhelming.

Not to besmirch the educational system of early 20th century Kansas, but I'm not
sure the three farm hands would have known what a doppelganger was. OTOH,
they may have been of German ancestry and might have known after all. To me
Oz is located in the imagination and not anywhere on a map.
Wherever it is, I think Dorothy's guess of not being in Kansas anymore makes a lot of sense.

CLINT EASTWOOD
Clint would be great. I'd also very much like Jodie Foster - and for some reason I think she may actually be more amenable to it than Clint.

if you are the author, you can play both interpretations to your advantage. That is what makes you interesting and well-read and gives you a lot of thread views. But not a lot of people understand that dichotomy or how to use it.
How can we have good posts back and forth on other threads when you have gone out of your way to take a cheap shot here? It means that you will come on to some of my best threads and not be able to communicate directly with me and the others I am posting with...why put yourself at such a disadvantage when it is a whole lot easier to refrain from such snarky posting and just live and let live and get along. Thumbs down.
I think you are out of your league with the analogy you are trying to put across. Nobody on these message boards, to my knowledge, is a killer or a politician. Shame on you for trying to insinuate such nonsense.
What I don't like is that people come on to threads they don't like, take cheap shots, then they try to act civil on other threads. That, to me, is quite dishonest.
Also, note that I brought this thread to page one last night the same time I brought up the popular songs thread. This one already has two hundred more views. Why? Because people are going out of their way to turn it into a lot of negativity, and the negativity festers and gets everyone's attention more than a positive thread about music related to classic movies and stars. That shows in my opinion what people are here to do-- not post about movies but harass others and get their kicks being rude. It's kind of sickening when you think about it. That is how far down this message board has fallen.
I think you are stretching it considerably-- how can you realistically make the leap that someone who seems childish is a politician or a puppeteer. It seems like you are just trying to glob together a bunch of stereotypes (the ugliest ones you can conjure up in your mind) and hurl them at me, hoping one or two of them stick.
I am trying to help you present a better argument and maybe a nicer disposition. Now you are resorting to the tactic of trying to say I am whining to deflect the fact that your earlier statements in the thread were rather weak. Am I hitting home now? LOL
Blessings!
He is one of the most intolerant posters on the boards, sad to say.
I think Frank plagiarized that text and did not cite it (give the proper reference). I believe that would be a violation of TCM's message board policy.
Negativity. Trolling. Condescension. Braggadocio. Just plain trouble-making.
You love it, dont'cha.

Surely one of the most well-known songs inspired by (and in this case, actually ABOUT) a movie star would be the Taupin/John composition 'Candle in the Wind'.
Poor Marilyn - even this lovely gift would be taken from her and re-gifted to "princess die" instead.

Lyrics from 'Year of the Cat' by Al Stewart:
On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they've turned back time
you go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre contemplating a crime
-
The Pretenders' "Message of Love" has the line "Like Brigitte Bardot".
and Rough Trade's 'High School Confidential' lyrics:
teenage Brando's stalk her in the halls
they tease her with cat calls (stella!)
she's a combination Anita Ekberg/Mamie Van Doren

Thanks, TCM, for introducing me to.....
These forums. They're a gas.

At least Cruise has some pretty good performances under his belt.
The one I'll NEVER be able to understand becoming a leading actor A-lister is Kevin Costner. I've said it several times before in these forums, but I'll say it once more - he is one of the least dynamic actors to ever gain the type of status he somehow attained. A bargained soul is the only explanation I can think of.

Hey, thank you, james!
That's the nicest thing I've heard in quite a while.

I find it interesting that fxreyman is spamming threads I created by reposting his anti-TopBilled comments. It keeps my threads on page one, which seems to defeat the purpose of what fxreyman is trying to accomplish.
Only temporarily, if he ever did convince all of us to ignore you.
-
We leave well enough alone and he just might go someplace else. And if he does not, we just continue to ignore him. That would seem easy enough to do don't you all think?
It'd only work if the regulars he LIKES would do it along with those of us he doesn't like.
As long as regulars like james, Dargo, Sepia, finance, Swithin and probably one or two others aren't willing to ignore him, he'll be even happier as a clam in his narcissistic ways without the rest of us.
Sorry I can't be more encouraging to you, fxreyman.

Speaking of "heated" and of nothing else on this thread, have people seen those ads for cars with heated seats?
There's something vaguely unpleasant about this idea; people travelling in cars having their bums warmed in this way.
I often travel by car in the winter, and have always found that just wrapping my coat around myself, or maybe some kind of blanket, is quite sufficient for the purpose of staying heated, posterior area and all.
Also: another kind of transportation, public transit (bus or subway): I don't like taking the seat of someone who's just risen to exit the bus or subway car. This is because the former passenger's seat is usually still freshly warm from its previous occupant's bum.
Is this overly fastidious of me? I think it might be.
Depends on who's bum. Your bum warmth I'd jump into without hesitation.

I guess to answer the question with any sureness would require understanding what all the laws, traditions, rules, regulations and cultures are in the land of Oz - which is, I believe, kinda what you told me in a different thread earlier today.
One things for certain though - I sure as hell ain't gonna put any stock in what those creepy munchkins have to say!

I am going to send this reply directly to the moderator
An unwanted poll will quickly fall to page two, and down to page ten and so on, if it is not an idea that would normally (or should logically) catch on. Have faith in the way the board works.
Which is why you bumped this to the top this morning when you realized nobody was responding to it?
With SO much to respond to in this whack manifest of yours, that's the only section I'm gonna comment on so that everyone else can have fun with it too.
But, just one question before I go - why exactly are you sending this long and winding answer of yours to the moderator? That's just strange, dude.

Ughh. I always liked that Holly song.
Until today.
Thanks a bunch, Nipkow.
