  1. I'm pretty sure you've gotten the sense by now that I'm reasonably "discerning" with this "gift" I occasionally decide to "bestow" upon those I REALLY think are "deserving" of this "poking fun at" shtick of mine.

(...I mean, I'm not THAT "bad", now AM I???!!!...WAIT, don't answer that...okay okay, you can answer that if ya want...I can USUALLY "take it"...but be gentle...I AIN'T made o' STONE here, ya know!!!)

Like I'd ever go after you. You and I are nearly the same person - you just have more talent at diplomacy than I do. My rule of 'never use the ignore feature' has always been the same as yours.

Lately, however, I've been mulling over the effects of seeing a certain poster's writings. And I'm learning just how many people have had to cut these posts from their lives, for their own emotional well-being. Even SansFin has admitted to needing that release. I've been considering changing my long-standing policy and joining them in that paradise. Of course, we can never be totally free unless we also put members who frequently quote the unwanted party on ignore as well. And that would be a much tougher decision to make.

  2. I don't use the ignore function either, the reasoning is if someone does a personal attack, you can always report them to the moderator instead of making other posters thinking it might be true.  Mostly, as you stated, it's best not to reply so not to get into arguments.

I've replied many times. Often, the result has been that the bully calls me a bully.

  3. Nope, sorry folks, but I'm stickin' with my "personal rule" here which is:

I NEVER place ANYBODY on "ignore", 'cause I've found that one can occasionally learn some interesting little tidbit EVEN from those who you might think don't have their heads on quite straight sometimes!!!

(...and besides, when i REALLY think the person who I think might fall into that category says somethin' REALLY "dumb", I STILL recieve WAY too much fun pokin' fun at 'em and seein' if THEY can "take it"...which of course they usually CAN'T...and which of course makes it even MORE fun!!!!) LOL

And when certain members deliberately say things that irritate others and actually enjoy the reactions it brings - including yours -? You don't mind feeding something that offends so many?

  4. She already has a directorship under her belt.

'In the Land of Blood and Honey' (2011) was an ambitious effort, though not all that well-received by critics. Still, she could end up being a better director than she is an actor.

Said this in another thread recently, she's massively over-rated as an actor.

    Sexy face, though.

  5. Two others of my current favorites are by Canadian artists------Neil Young's "Southern Man", and Rush's "Subdivisions".

Is there any recording artist who defines the counter-culture better than Neil? And he's been so true to that all these years. A truly great Canadian.

As a child, Neil's father (Scott Young) was an conservative sportswriter for the Toronto Telegram, who also wrote sports-themed novels for young people - and, most notably, was a regular guest on Saturday evening's 'Hockey Night in Canada', that era's most nationally watched television program, home of the Leafs - who then were "Canada's Team". I think his father's fame probably made Neil a school yard celebrity of sorts. Virtually every kid in Canada saw his dad on Saturday nights.

I chose this video, even though it's not the best sound (it's from the lp) because of all the great photos of Neil throughout.

    Here's Rush

  6. One of my very favorite actresses is Lee Remick. I find her to be just as attractive and appealing in her later years as she was early in her career.  Lee was already starring in major films in her early 20's and she was still quite active right up until her final days (sadly she was only 55 when cancer took her life).

Just a headsup to you that TCM will be showing 'Baby, the Rain Must Fall' in March! I've been waiting a long time for an opportunity to record a copy of that strange little gem. Also stars Steve McQueen in one of his lesser-known roles.

  7. The Brain That Wouldn't Die is one of the craziest films ever!  I don't want to spoil anything, but when the thing in the closet attacks the lab assistant, the death scene is priceless! The film is one of the great lowbrow guilty pleasures.

Watching that one in the theatre at 12 years old made me feel dirty.

Sleazy, sleazy movie - I love it!

  8. I even recall in one of the three original films luke and leia being refered to as twins...

    give me a break...

Hamill and Fisher look nothing like each other plus there did seem to be some jockeying going on in the first film between luke and solo for the affections of leia.

    Reminds of the old joke:

    Do you have any kids?

    Yes. Twins.

How do you tell them apart?

    The boy is taller.

  9. I agree with what you post here.  My point was that when a teacher does the bidding of a teacher's pet,  I still fault the teacher since they are the one with the actual authority and power.

Teachers are idiots a lot of the time. I'd be too if I had to put up with all the whining they have to.

  10. HelenBaby,

I like your posts and your persona, so please forgive what follows.  One hopes that posters will be respectful of others, particularly since posters online don't have the accompanying advantage of making a criticism in a soft voice, or with a smile. But the other side of it is that we have to try to ignore some of the slights -- some are blatant, and must be addressed; others are more subtle and can be responded to subtly. This isn't the first time that you've brought up the question of leaving because of the way you've been treated. And then posters post several "please stay" messages to try to get you (or others in the same position) to stay.

What I'm curious about is -- because I guess I just haven't seen them -- what remarks directed against you have been so offensive; or, if they aren't as outrageous as some others here -- do you just need to let them go and muddle through the difficult days along with the rest of us?  I was called something pretty outrageous here recently. Not that I'm a great one to turn the other cheek, but when people make those over-the-top remarks, sometimes the best thing to do is just to get all sarcastic and condescending on their as*ses. Of course we each have our style.

I believe in Helen's case, she's been forbidden to engage with TopBilled - a result of him running to the mods about her.

If I'm wrong about this, please correct me.

Having such a restriction placed on a person is debilitating to that person's sense of self. Nobody would like to be cast in a position where they have to withhold their responses, no matter whether those responses would be entirely valid, for fear of banishment. And especially when the "protected" person is someone like HIM! And just to kick her when she's down, he once complained about her "liking" my posts because the posts I address to him he often doesn't appreciate.

And if anyone thinks I know this from a private message relationship with Helen, think again. She has contacted me only once by pm in all the years I've been here - and that was to thank me for saying something in a post I'd made.

  11. Sorry, but I do NOT agree with you.   The poster made a REQUEST,  and NOT an ORDER.    If you feel the moderator should have asked the group (got a consensus by the majority),  take that up with the moderator.    One can't fault the people that made the request for what the moderator does.

He was out of line, "request" or not.

People should be free to discuss any movie they want to in General Discussions without someone making an issue of doing so all of a sudden. The resentment he's gotten is deserved.

  12. As far as I'm concerned, Bride of Frankenstein is a work of art

I don't think there's any question that critics agreed with that in 1935 - and most still do, I'd bet.

And it almost is - except for one problem I have with it. I mean, I really love most of the movie - it's brilliant. But Dr. Pretorius and his little people are just too ridiculous. They take me out of the movie - every damn time.

Even as a child I remember thinking "this is the best movie ever made" and then getting to that little people part and I'd let out a groan. It prevents me from placing this otherwise magnificent movie on top of the shelf where most feel it belongs.

Don't know why it bothers me so much, but it does. Maybe I feel that they took a great horror movie and tried to make it a children's movie or something - get more ticket buyers for it that way. I just don't know.
