  1. A quote appears in the article that reads: One well-known collectivist echoed such sentiments when he said, "Let me control the textbooks and I will control the state. The state will take youth and give to youth its own education and its own upbringing. Your child belongs to us already... what are you?" Apparently it was said by Adolph Hitler, but when I read it the first thing that popped into my mind was the Texas School Board.
  2. Their parents were fundamentally incompetent at raising them?
  3. 'Bad Seeds' are a particularly unnerving kind of monster, aren't they.
  4. I can just imagine how much less its revenue will be next quarter after losing all its CNN/TCM subscribers.
  5. Okay, TCM. Now that you've given us this peculiar "gem", hows about giving us 'Peopletoys' (1974) - aka 'Devil Times Five' at some point?
  6. Yikes. Well, TB - if it was that long-ago post that gave you the idea to affix TCM's fairly satisfied viewership with one scornful label, then I'm certainly sorry I ever used the word even that one time.
  7. Many have said that Clift would have been better as the latent homosexual Maj. Weldon Penderton in 'Reflections in a Golden Eye' (1967) principally because he could've related more. I disagree with this - I believe Brando was perfect in the role.
  8. It means that if your belief is in accordance with that held by a majority, you'll be less criticized for it whether that belief is solidly founded in true morality or not. But when the vagaries of public convention shift your belief to a minority-held one, you'll be much more vulnerable to vilification for it - again whether the belief is founded in one's sense of morality or not. So, it's very much a numbers game in regards to the comfort one has in expressing what one feels or has felt. Your point that in 2014 his admission of how he used to feel about Clift is unacceptable and inexcusable just reminded me of how important it can be to express certain beliefs at certain times, depending on how the wind is blowing. It was really just a passing thought - I probably should have kept it to myself (would've saved me all this extra typing and I am pretty lazy).
  9. Actually, I used the word once in a post about two and a half years ago. It was in a discussion regarding TCM having shown a couple of edited prints. I noted that there were quite a few defenders leaping forward as if I'd somehow besmirched TCM's integrity with my observation. But I never intended for the word to become an ad hoc designation for anyone who is satisfied with TCM. And I don't believe I ever used it again in any other context than the one described above. Unlike it's present usage by the malcontents, it was not intended as an insult.
  10. Umm. What's the criticism? Seems to have gone missing in between the opening and closing sentences.
  11. Yes, I am Canadian, through and through. I loved that 80's era of VHS tapes - so many titles (especially Canadian productions) have not made it to DVD. I have a set-up whereby I can copy movies on DVD to DVD-R's for my home collection. The set-up came together purely accidentally, with a mix of components that include certain DVD players, HDD recorders, disc recorders and VCR's - all connected in a specific way. Even Macrovision on DVD's is rendered ineffective. But I've heard that movies on VHS can be more difficult because of copy protection signals built in - it's kind of why I asked if you'd managed to do it. Because of limited space - in addition to the many problems associated with aging video cassettes that you mentioned - I would not even start to collect tapes. I'm strictly a disc storer now, using 100 capacity wallets.
  12. I guess it's the popularity level of a belief that's important.
  13. You'd have never known it from the public's reaction - it was a huge hit in 1967 and 68, and I remember well the superlatives bestowed on Hepburn.
  14. Mr. Gorman, have you ever tried copying your video tapes to DVD?
  15. In her cage she danced for him although a hundred eyes were turned her way. - Gordon Lightfoot 1967
  16. Ahh, you can call it nonsense if you like - there's certainly been lots of it, interspersed with the not-so-nonsensical. If someone wants to see your description as a "slam" - let 'em. Others see it as an honest appraisal. Nonsense.....slams.....people are allowed their own interpretations, yes?
  17. He was a stand-out in that supporting role, I agree.
  18. Problem is they keep showing those godawful 'Logan's Run' and 'Soylent Green' movies- and those things give sci-fi no boost whatsoever. People say, "if that's what's considered classic sci-fi, no mas thankyou." 'Return of the Fly' (1959) - now that's a fun movie.
  19. You're welcome. But, I think I misspoke. It's more of a rant than a tantrum. My bad.
