  1. Top Ten (in no particular order):

    Movies by name

    Certain actors by name

    Certain directors by name

Wants and wishes of what should or shouldn't be shown

    Music in the movies

    Popular music outside of movies

    Books about showbiz people

    Book/movie comparisons

Complaints about TCM Staff and/or management of operations

    Current events and rumours

Sorry, topper - you're not a category anywhere but in your own head.

  2. At one time I had a taped copy of the '66 version of "Stagecoach" and I stored the tape in a place that was too damp and humid and so it went mouldy before I ever got 'round to playing it.

That's a darn shame. Bing gives probably the best performance in that movie (of an impressive ensemble cast). Other standouts include Robert Cummings, Keenan Wynn and Red Buttons.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why TCM doesn't show this movie - it seems like a natural for this movie channel.

  3. I think you are trying to make a comment about the politics of my government. I don't think we're supposed to bring politics into the discussions around here. Also, you are a guest on a U.S.-owned business website. So I think that's a very improper post to make here.

Nope. A comment on the word I hear in American media more than any other.

War on crime, war on poverty, war on Christmas, war on drugs, war on marriage, war on women, war on the middle-class, war on religion, war on freedom, war against Communism, war of words, war of opinions, war of the sexes, war....... well, you get the idea. Seems to be the favorite concept, if not the favorite word.

You said you had me on ignore, so go pick a fight with someone else.

  4. The difference is subtle. You may hear it here in Russian word with both hard and soft

I see. The English alphabet, and its attendant pronunciations, are all I know. It seems that a letter of it may be of the exact shape to look at as a letter of another language, but that other language may have an entirely different sound associated with the shape.

As some of us English-only speakers might say, that's whack.

  5. I thought there was only one way to pronounce the letter "K".

I'm with you on that - what on earth does a soft K sound like?

Unless of course we're talking about the K that's used in "knife" or "knell" or "knight". They aren't pronounced at all, and I guess ya can't get any softer than that.

  6. ??

I think I'm getting senile. Not following so well this past week or so.

    I get it now!!

If I reveal anything private, it won't spread beyond these boards!

I wasn't actually worried about that - but it's disconcerting that I didn't get that until now (I just woke up). I have got to start getting more sleep.

  7. Aaaah, if only EVERYONE would act in this manner around here, I REALLY doubt we'd get into as many of these little "tiffs" around here as we seem to do.

But what about the bossy members who seem to feel it's their duty to reprimand us for our wandering ways? You wouldn't wanna put them out of business, would you?

  8. Do you remember a song called "Big Bruce?"  It had nothing to do with Bruce Morrow, by the way. It was a takeoff on "Big John," and was hysterically funny and somewhat tasteless. I think it was yanked off the airwaves after a few spins.

Big Bad Bruce was clearly a satire on a certain effeminate stereotype. Late 60's release I believe.

  9. The simple name of the film (or whatever) alone does suggest it's intended as a general discussion of same (film or whatever.)

I did read your original post, and saw nothing there to preclude a general discussion of the film in question.

Apparently, we were supposed to describe our "personal relationship to the movie".

  10. I had a post removed from an automobile forum recently and received an e-mail from moderators that it was removed.  I had to ask why and they said because I used the word "dope."  The sentence referenced that many of the people who break into cars are not thinking rationally because they are on dope.

My local online newspaper permits comments on articles.  It will not permit me to use Dick Cheney.  I think theirs is automatic and it removes the first name.  Anybody ever heard of Richard Cheney?

Automatic filters have no intelligence behind their programming. They're idiotic.

  11. SURE ya can, primos! One can STILL "shout out" whatEVER the hell they want in this country of ours, lady!

(...it's STILL just a matter of NOT gettin' your freakin' "feelings hurt" IF by what you "shout out" is sometimes viewed by others as being really really STUPID or EXTREMELY closed-minded, THAT'S all!!!)

And some people might even consider them to be fightin' words. One should always be conscious of that possibility.

  12. NIGHT THE CITY SCREAMED, The (1980-Tvm)  Linda Purl, Raymond Burr, Georg Sanford Brown, George DiCenzo.

That Linda Purl was such a cutie, wasn't she. She was in a lot of made-for-tv movies in the early 80's, one of which was 'Women at West Point'. I developed a crush on her from that one.

She's still a very lovely woman, most recently seen as Pam Beasley's mom on 'The Office'.

  13. jmking made a suggestion that I'd like to second, with 'Vanishing Point' (1971).

skimpole suggested the wonderfully offbeat (for its time) 'Murder by Contract' (1958) and I'd second that also.

PhygLeGuy suggested 'Son of Dracula' (1974). I've always wanted to see that. Ringo Starr, ay.

  14. The original post questioned if: riot had been shown in classic movies and then subsequent posters had few suggestions. I wished to know how many might be mentioned. I believe that one-hundred-and-four movies out of the many thousands which were made during that time indicate that it was rare.

I believe movies with riots in them didn't become very fashionable until the 60's.
