  1. Many have said that Clift would have been better as the latent homosexual Maj. Weldon Penderton in 'Reflections in a Golden Eye' (1967) principally because he could've related more. I disagree with this - I believe Brando was perfect in the role.

  2. I didn't know how to interpret 'popularity level...that's important"

It means that if your belief is in accordance with that held by a majority, you'll be less criticized for it whether that belief is solidly founded in true morality or not. But when the vagaries of public convention shift your belief to a minority-held one, you'll be much more vulnerable to vilification for it - again whether the belief is founded in one's sense of morality or not.

So, it's very much a numbers game in regards to the comfort one has in expressing what one feels or has felt.

Your point that in 2014 his admission of how he used to feel about Clift is unacceptable and inexcusable just reminded me of how important it can be to express certain beliefs at certain times, depending on how the wind is blowing.

It was really just a passing thought - I probably should have kept it to myself (would've saved me all this extra typing and I am pretty lazy).

  3. Obviously that term had not been used before you were around

Actually, I used the word once in a post about two and a half years ago. It was in a discussion regarding TCM having shown a couple of edited prints. I noted that there were quite a few defenders leaping forward as if I'd somehow besmirched TCM's integrity with my observation.

But I never intended for the word to become an ad hoc designation for anyone who is satisfied with TCM. And I don't believe I ever used it again in any other context than the one described above.

Unlike it's present usage by the malcontents, it was not intended as an insult.

  4. Yes, I am Canadian, through and through.

I loved that 80's era of VHS tapes - so many titles (especially Canadian productions) have not made it to DVD.

I have a set-up whereby I can copy movies on DVD to DVD-R's for my home collection. The set-up came together purely accidentally, with a mix of components that include certain DVD players, HDD recorders, disc recorders and VCR's - all connected in a specific way. Even Macrovision on DVD's is rendered ineffective.

But I've heard that movies on VHS can be more difficult because of copy protection signals built in - it's kind of why I asked if you'd managed to do it.

Because of limited space - in addition to the many problems associated with aging video cassettes that you mentioned - I would not even start to collect tapes. I'm strictly a disc storer now, using 100 capacity wallets.

  5. The level of bigotry expressed by his "Just being honest" is not really going to be accepted without a challenge. Any explanations for the roots of his prejudice don't excuse his choice to remain so in 2014, when clearly many are changing their previous held less tolerant beliefs. That he is not among them yet is unfortunate.

I guess it's the popularity level of a belief that's important.

  6. In her cage she danced for him although a hundred eyes were turned her way.

  7. The above post starts with a disrespectful slam:

"Sorry I haven't sifted through this thread's pages of nonsense...."

I apologise, I can see how you misinterpreted that statement.

What I MEANT to say was ...while I participated in reading this thread when it was first posted, I found the thread had become somewhat derailed from the original intent.

I did not want to address the spinoff conversations, but the OP.

Hope that clarifies that I did not mean to insult anyone with my statement.

Ahh, you can call it nonsense if you like - there's certainly been lots of it, interspersed with the not-so-nonsensical.

If someone wants to see your description as a "slam" - let 'em. Others see it as an honest appraisal. Nonsense.....slams.....people are allowed their own interpretations, yes?

  8. These people are having a temper tantrum. It's shameful behavior, especially when there are others who cannot afford cable. These people are canceling by choice because they are not getting what they want. I can't feel sorry for that. Then they say they will not post on the message boards-- like that carries any weight anywhere. Again more temper tantrums from adults who should be exhibiting more mature behavior.

Nice little tantrum of your own there, Sunshine.

  9. Darkblue, please understand I don't believe that TCM has to apologize for these things  nor do I consider myself an apologist.  I'm not the one to use that label "apologist".

No, you don't. I do understand. Your post was just a good opportunity for me to expand a little on the falseness of the term.

I don't believe that TCM has a message to the naysayers like "tough tiddies"

    Well, it should.

  10. Well, mrroberts - if you think TCM is doing something wrong, I suppose you can apologize on its behalf - if you feel you must.

I don't see that TCM needs to apologize for what it's doing at all - it's the best movie channel available at an affordable cost to its viewers. It's beyond my understanding that anyone would feel the need to apologize for it. Defend it, maybe. But say "sorry"? I don't think so.

For all the years I've been coming here, these forums have almost on a daily basis featured somebody belly-aching about what TCM schedules. And yet TCM just goes on scheduling what it schedules unapologetically - clearly its answer to the complainants is "you don't like what's on the schedule, tuff tiddies". With the schedule provided months ahead of time, there's no reason why anyone can't plan around the movies they don't want to watch.

As for Ben and Bob, who at times utter imprecise "facts", they can apologize for themselves if they feel they should. Which apparently, they do not.
